I am on ICS 4.0.4 build 6.1.A.0.452 on my xperia S.
Rooting guide for 4.0.4(locked bootloader) is available by doomlord...But one of the requirement says phone to be in USB Msc connection mode. my question is ,everyone says to select MSC mode in settings-xperia-connectivity.
But its not there in my phone!!simply no option at all!!
there is an option of mount usb in settings-storge,but that is always grayed out
wether connected or not
see attached pic

haha, never seen any option in this regardless of MTP only. Going to Themes & apps thread and you'll see a thread " Sdcard mounter for ics "

see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1744878
but actually you need root access to install that app & on other hand you need Msc mode enabled to "root" stock ICS!!
So what should be done?
I want to root it

Hey, no need msc mode enabled to root. What you need is install cwm & install su.zip in cwm

I'm new here. I am now also searching how to root my xperia neo with ics in mtp mode. It seems to me that you also need root to install cwm.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks

same problem to me.xperia p not connect pc charging only.usb debugging enabled.it not shows msc mode.mtp only
I got problems with the usb on my Xperia X10i. Everytime I connect the device to the computer it only charges the phone and nothing else; the computer says "unkown device" . I tried installing the drivers, pc companion, SE update....i've tried even rooting with superone click or flashing with flashtool but it doesn't recognize the device at all...
Oh, and something else, when I connect the phone to the computer it doesn't even display the message to chose the option ( mass storage, only charging, etc) and I can't even find Usb connectivity on phone.
Android: 2.3.3
Baseband 2.1.72
Kernel: 2.6.29-00054-g5f01537
please help...!
Hey refldo
- When you connect mobile in flash mode to flashtool, doesn't recognize it?
- for usb storage check the following attachment by going to settings, storage, menu button, USB storage

To root the phone you need to turn on the ANDROID DEBUGGING in your settings.. go to settings->apps->development->USB/ANDROID DEBUGGING.... now flashtool should recognize your phone... also install drivers present in the flashtool folder....

After I did that, in sony's pc companion when I connect the phone it shows for 2 seconds "searching for phone" and after that "no phone connected".
Can I somehow install a new firmware from the sd card? Maybe it'll work this way...

You can't install new firmware without rooting and installing custom recovery... use SEUS (PC companion) to repair your phone...

with all the computers.
I've tried on different computers with the different usb cables, so I don't think that's the problem.

Every time I plug my XU into my computer, I get a prompt asking me if I want to install software on the PC, presumably PC Companion. I have already installed it directly from the web. Can anyone suggest how I can prevent this annoying prompt? (I don't know if it is relevant, but I have USB Debugging enabled.)
Thanks
Go to settings in mobile and then Xperia connectivity then usb connectivity now you uncheck the option install software.

A little while ago I downgraded my XPERIA U to Android Version 2.3.7 , because it was malfunctioning on 4.0.4.
Ever since the downgrade, the phone has been doing fine , but when I connect it to PC through USB cable , the computer doesn't recognize the phone's memory.
At the moment of plugging , Sony PC Companion shows a little box at the bottom right corner of the screen , giving the message "Wait for the device to get connected" ,
soon after it says "My Sony XPERIA U (ST25) is connected" , but once I click on Launch Sony PC Companion , it shows the connection error with the 4-step guide.
I followed the guide but that didn't do any good.
Any tips ?

I reckon "USB debugging mode" is not available on Xperia U.
The only possible option for USB connection mode is "Media transfer mode" (MTP) and like I said,
It's the only possible option, and therefore can't be changed.
