I've tried searching if anyone had this issue, but I can't find anything. When my wifi is on, I have no signal. When I turn it off, my signal bar goes full again. I'm pretty sure this has to do with wifi calling, because when that's turned off and wifi is on, I don't have an issue. I'm just noting this because I'm not sure if it's a bug or it's meant to be that way. When I put "cellular preferred" my signal shows up again. Anyone else experience this?
Yes it's definitely got to do with the WiFi calling. Just disable it and you'll be fine.

that is exactly how wifi calling works, it's been that way since the very first iteration of wifi calling.... since your calls go via wifi, and data is also on wifi, it disables the cellular radio to save power, essentially you look to your wifi signal indicator for signal strength
I've concluded something about this, even tho you see no signal your getting signal ,I can send myself a text or anyone with WiFi calling on and no bars ...so evidently there is signal ,because sms works off data only and wifi calling does not support sms or mms only calls , so if sms can go thru there must be signal even tho it's visually not evident

Interesting was pretty sire WiFi calling also supported text and mms too. Thought I saw it on the site. Where did you read that it dorsnt support it ?

It takes me several minutes to send a 50 KB image, if not longer.
I download over 500kbps from the Android market, yet it takes several minutes to download a 30 kb MMS.
I talked to T-Mobile and they said Android has issues with using WIFI, is that true?
My SIM card is literally 5 years old, I wonder if that is it?
I think MMS has to use OTA data...Its a carrier thing not a phone or android thing
(Correct me if I'm wrong someone)
Well mine does that from time to time as well but I never received the update a of last night. So I don't think its related to the update. Usually I'd your connected to wifi and your phone detects that a signal (3g) is faster then itll connect to that.

Yeah, I am aware. It is just that no matter how small the file is, it won't send.
I notice when I send an mms, 3G takes over wifi, and when finished sending mms wifi comes back.
Well whoever you talked to at Tmo that didn't answer this for you was a moron......
All mms and sms messages are sent over the network, regardless of wifi being on or not....
So even you are ay home connected to wifi, yet your actually signal strength to the network is low....it will take a while to send a mms...

Dead topic probably but........I think T-Mobile situation a bit different....T-Mobile has Wifi Calling plan....and where i've read, you can send/receive messages over wifi.
http://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24195.xml
"Ability to send/receive SMS and MMS, and access Web2go over Wi-Fi."
Yea but you have to use T-mobile hot spot or their @home service.

Just install the WiFi Calling App. It's all over the place here. Do a search!
Is there anyone who is working on using a app to make all sms messages and data while on Wifi at home or work. I live in a town with not so great signal so im always on wifi but i still need signal to send and recieve messages calls.
I was wondering if it was possible to do this with a app or mod the rom to function this way.
That way i may also end the Radio Interference Shortage i see all to much do to from what i can figure is the phone bouncing on and off sprints network to roaming so often. ( seems to be worse on wifi.)
If you use the Google voice integration, it only sends over data connection.
Thanks for the info i just was reading about that. But looks like the only option.

personally, i have been using google voice for two years now and it was worked very well. when i have low cell signal but have good wifi or 4g, i open up the app and text.
if i have low wifi/4g signal but good cell signal, i text from the built in message app using SMS.
as a possible alternative, i've seen a new app being promoted, DeskSMS, from koush (ROM Manager developer). i haven't used it personally, but the main idea is to congregate all your text messages into one location so you can access from all devices. if you want to research more on DeskSMS, there is a lifehacker article reviewing it, here is a lifehacker article on it and the android market page.
edit: an airave is definitely a decent alternative if you're on sprint and need better service on one specific location. the OP posted his whole town has signal issues both at his work and at home and specifically questioned any apps be available to help handle better sms communication. an airave could solve your signal issues at home and at work, but is location dependent. i was able to get an airave from sprint for my home location at no charge due to our long tenure as a sprint customer.
hope that helps!
sounds like you may want to look into getting an airave, its a device that you hook up to your home internet that broadcasts service up to 1000ft from the unit..
Kind of like a wifi router but for EVDO
I have a unrooted s4 and it will not send mms messages when connected to wifi. I have to turn wifi off for the mms to send. I looked for some auto retrieve/send mms setting but couldn't find any. Anybody have any ideas what I can do?
Can anyone else confirm this???? If so, please do, so i can submit this bug to Samsung.
I can't really test it myself, i have poor signal in my apt. The few times i have received at home it's worked fine. Haven't tried sending.
last time i checked, MMS dont send via wifi. it goes via cell signal/data never worked when i was on my nexus. even now, when using Go SMS on my S4 i notice when i send a MMS while on wifi i can see the 3G/4G icon turn on just to send the picture then turn off
I have used it at home while on Wi-Fi.

The OP was not expecting it to use Wi-Fi. He was expecting it to work while Wi-Fi was connected.

My MMS is working while WiFi is on, but the MMS doesn't actually use WiFi to send the message, it is sent via the cell/data signal.

the problem may be when using the stock SMS app it may not send over wifi. when you're connected to wifi the phone defaults to sending everything it can via data that can be sent. are you using the stock SMS app?
i just tried to do it with stock SMS and the second i went to attach a photo, it disconnected my wifi to grab 3G/4G to send the photo. once it was done, it jumped back on wifi
Cell tower issue....low signal issue? Dont contact Samsung until you try your phone in other places. Drive...if your old enough down the road like 5 miles...see if the mms goes through. Call Verizon and see if they are having issues with that tower.

I've never been able to send MMS through WIFI. So I always just thought it was something Verizon did to make you use more Data. If anyone knows a way around this. Would love to know as well.
Same Issue
I am having the same issue when i am connected to WiFi in my house. No MMS will send. Once i turn off WiFI the MMS will go through. I have Data turned on as well) My tower strength is fine. Any ideas how to solve this? I am running a Verizon GS4.
oh thank god someone else is having this issue. it's DRIVING ME NUTS!! sorry to not have any additional information but you are not alone :-/

MMS messages never traverse the "internet" which is the reason why A) it cannot be sent/received over WiFi and B) using VZW data cannot be circumvented.
My wife has had the GS4 for a couple of days and ran into this yesterday. She tried sending me a picture but didn't notice that it didn't go. She asked my son if I rec'd the picture and showed him and obviously I didn't so she sent it to him as well. That's when she realized the one to me was still "Sending...". His never went either. When she tried to send to me, she was in a store and probably NOT on WiFi (unless it was "open").
This morning, she asked about it and I told her "turn off WiFi" but that didn't kick it in. I then tried sending her a picture (a trick I learned on the Thunderbolt with AOSP ROMs) - when her phone toggles off WiFi to receive mine, it should also see pending, outgoing messages on hers and send it. Didn't work....
I then used Handcent SMS and chose "Edit" on each message, did NOTHING to them, and hit Send - and they went. WiFi was ON as well. She also sent an MMS moments later that went.
Even if it were a "tower" issue, she should have come along to multiple other towers while out driving.
I uninstalled the caller id app, and that solved this.
Isn't that a system app ? I haven't rooted her phone (yet)...

Yes, but it is deletable. My wife's not rooted either.
I cancelled the trial in the app then went to Application Manager and instead of the "Uninstall" button, it was a "Disable" button. I hit it, nothing obvious happened, but the app is gone from the app drawer now.
Still Not working
I have disabled the Caller ID app and still no go. I see the 4G icon pop up when i go to send, then it disappears and the MMS message just sits there, never sends. Does anyone else have any suggestions or ideas to solve this?

Yes we know MMS does not utilize the internet via wifi. Yes, we know MMS must travel over your carrier's cellular data connection.
While connected to wifi, with the 4g/3g Icon NOT showing, this issue comes up. You go to send an MMS, the 4g/3g Icon pops up for a short time, say 30 seconds, and then disappears. But the message never sends. If I turn wifi off, MMS then send flawlessly, sitting in the exact same spot I was previously. Signal strength is not an issue, or it would not work without fail when wifi is off in the same location, and then suddenly stop working when Wifi is back on.
A third party SMS app did not mitigate the issue for me. Which has been suggested by some as a solution.
Can anyone provide any additional insight on this issue? VZW tech support is a joke.

Any ideas? Still an ongoing issue. I can not send group mms at all when connected to wifi. I have to disconnect from wifi, copy message text, delete message, paste, and resend with wifi disconnected.
Sometimes if I reboot my phone it will be able to send a MMS over Wifi but eventually it will not be able to...
I'm gonna install a custom touchwiz rom and see if that helps.

My gf phone on bnh5 and get text messages don't come through when connected to wifi any ideas?
Is WIFI calling enabled? I've missed texts and calls when using WIFI calling.
It's wifi calling's fault. Just turn it off if you really don't need it. It's really pretty bad.
Anyone else face this issue? if you tether the phone internet to your laptop, it works as expected but once you make/receive a call, the internet on the laptop will stop working. I also note that the phone signal will drop from 4G to 3G/H+ on the phone once you make/receive a call.
I have tried to reach out to Huawei for support but not getting any resolution from them.
Issue can be reproduce as below:
1. Tether your phone to your laptop and check that internet is available on your laptop.
2. Have someone call your phone or make an outgoing call, you will notice your mobile signal drop from 4G to 3G/H+. Keep the call ongoing and dont hang up.
3. Check your laptop to confirm that internet has stop working.
Not surprising at all, it's by design and not linked to the fact you're tethering the smartphone's data connection.
Without tethering, use a hands free kit or earphones, make a call or simply call your voicemail and now on the smartphone try browsing or any connected app, they'll fail: data connection is lost during voice call.
In order to keep your (4G) data connection, your mobile provider has to support VoLTE and you must activate related option on your phone. I did it, it's working, didn't try calling while tethering but I'm quite sure it's the same case =)
Still no internet with either VoLTE on and off. And I dont think this is to be expected as my previous phone, Xiaomi Mi Max has no issue and can do both call and tethering at the same time. And my colleague just did a test with his new Samsung Note9 and also didnt face this issue. Not sure if this is a software bug or a hardware design flaw/limitation
I use tethering/hotspot every few days and didn't notice any problem. Signal drops from 4G to 3G because Mate 10 doesn't support VoLTE but internet works fine for me.

Please test tethering while on call, not just tethering alone. Tethering alone works fine for me as well.
Internet will pause during phone call unless your network is VoLTE. My phone network signal will change from 4G to H+ during phone call.

As I said, it works fine while on call. I use tethering in my second apartment, airports and in almost every caffe bar and didn't notice any network problems on my notebook if someone calls me. There is one lost packet when phone starts ringing and that's it.
The first photo is WiFi hotspot + phone call and the second photo is USB tethering + phone call.
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the input on VoLTE, base on this info, i query my telco (Starhub) regarding this, and just a few mins ago i received an SMS that "HD Voice Plus" had been activated for my number. HD voice plus is just what they call VoLTE. Now i have a VoLTE icon on the top left of my phone. I tried the same case again and sure enough it is working now. Cheers.
