Ok, so after less than 24 hours, I'm finding my S4 switches to 3g more often than my Rezound did when I am in a 4G area. I KNOW I am in a 4g area. On the rezound I used an app called LTE switch, and I was able to select the network I wanted to use..I.E: LTE only, LTE & CDMA, LTE CDMA & EVDO, CDMA PRL, GSM, etc.... However, this app is not working on the S4. I use to force my Rezound to stay in LTE with this app, and basically eliminate 3G from it while I was in a 4G area. Anyone know how to do this on an S4, or know why LTE switch doesn't work.
I would like to know this too. I used the "LTE OnOff" on my Motorola Bionic to switch between 3G and 4G LTE and it does not work on the S4.

Got my AT&T Galaxy Note a few days back and I live in Mission Viejo, CA. I have noticed that most of the time it just displays the 4G icon and other times it has a small LTE under the 4G icon. So... is there such a thing as 4G and 4G LTE?
New to the whole 4G phones... as I came from an iPhone.
When it says 4g your are on on At&ts hspa+ network. If it say 4g and has under it Lte you're in a Lte area.

Yes, LTE is LTE, otherwise it's HSPA+ (also considered "4G"). When mine shows LTE (which is only when I assume the Fox viewing position) I drop by a couple of bars. Sounds like you are either in a fringe area like me, or you're in a building that is causing LTE signal degradation.
What's a Bieber?

In addition, if you go Settings > About Phone > Status > "Mobile Network Type" you can also tell what network you are on.
Think I got it. So HSPA is 3G, HSPA+ is 4G and LTE is a better 4G?
technically hspa is 3g hspa+ is 3.5g lte is 4g.
HSPA+ is pseudo 4g- it's really 3.5G with some backend modifications by att(something called enhanced backhaul) to enhance 3G for faster speeds. LTE is tru 4G.
Here is a link to explain the differences in 3G,4G,and LTE.

Is there HSPA+ throughout all of AT&T's network then, just not LTE yet?
Then I am guessing my iPhone 4 was only HSPA (3G) only and not capable of getting HSPA+?

Hell mine keeps alternating between UMTS and HSPA, no + after it either.
No wonder I get choppy pixelated HD videos on youtube.
i am traveling through Europe right now with a roaming data plan, but i am only getting 2g edge or even worse GPRS whenever 4g is unavailable (which is most of the time). I never get 3g. If I put my SIM in my old AT&T Tilt 2 I get on 3g just fine. Does the Amaze support 3g and how do I enable that?
The 4g is technically just really fast 3g.

you have to see what kind of towers are where you are, the Amaze supports the 3G 850,1900,AWS and 2100 bands IIRC, could be missing the one band that your tilt has and that the nearest tower puts out
On the energy rom 3g is shown with a 4G symbol. I don't know if it's the same way with other roms. A good way to check this out is to head to the icon changer in rom toolbox and see what your 3g symbol is.

i am using the bulletproof ROM.. how do i change the band so i can get the proper 3g signals?
Shot in the dark here. I know i was able to modify my PRL on cdma so that my phone will work in areas with verizon coverage, but not sprint, i even get 3g. How does LTE work as far as directing to specific towers, and would it be POSSIBLE to configure anything in the evo LTE to get LTE coverage in areas such as chicago that have verizon LTE, but no Sprint LTE Coverage.
No because Sprint and Verizon run on two different LTE spectrums, Sprint uses 1900 Hz bands and Verizon uses 700 Hz bands

This is my first time having a 4G T-Mobile device. I managed to turn off the 4g, but is there an option to use 3G on these phones? Are 2G and HSPA+(besides wifi)the only options we have?

L9 is not 4G (LTE) device. It seems T-Mobile is giving marginally faster 3G (HSDPA) and calling it as 4G (LTE). L9 does not have LTE hardware at all. Check manual by LG, they never call it 4G device. Seems T-Mobile is trolling with its customers since long time with this term though their speed is good.
I never thought it had LTE. From trying a speed test, the speed was comparable to Sprint wimax. I still call it 4G even if it's not "true 4g". Thanks for the clarification, that's understandable.

The sad truth is Sprint's wimax and the currently deployed LTE iterations aren't 4G either. T-Mobile's LTE rel. 10 will be 4G.

Ok, so I am a little new to this because I am coming from Sprint, where I was able to choose 2g, 3G, and 4g but since I have just switched to AT&T the only options I am finding in the network settings are GSM which gives me what appears to be 2g. When I choose wcdma but that gives me 4g, and then LTE. Is there something I am missing when it comes to the network choice that will give me 3G?

4G = 3G for AT&T. AT&T (as do other carriers) consider their HSPA+ network to be "4G" when in fact really it is still 3G

Oh wow, thank you so much! That clears things up for me. Thanks!
