hows the os running on the s4? i've heard from other carriers that the s4 seemed laggy. not sure if it was the phone or 4.2.2 that caused this.
I'm not super highly sensitive to micro lag and all that shiz but this is sm0o0o0othness.
It was laggy during set up. It seems to have settled now.

pretty smooth, but small hiccups occasionally
Touchwiz has its hiccups, but installing Nova Launcher eliminates all of that.
Same here, butter.
I found myself immediately installing the stock launcher after getting it. Worked great, but I went and un-installed it last night, and it seems to have cached everything. I haven't seen lag since. SMS App does lag slightly when switching through contacts, but that was to be expected.
On a side note, Am I the only one noticing how FAST this phone charges? 50% in 28 min? Holy crap

Per charging. The stock charger is 5v 2amp! It charges it amazingly fast however using a computer or any of my other chargers it takes forever. In the case of charging via a computer I feel that it just beats the attrition of using it.
Mine has been incredibly smooth.
Horrible. The lag is extremely noticeable when using the stock SMS and gallery apps. I type a text message, hit back twice, and it takes about 0.5-1 second for what I hit to register. Even when going through the settings there is a noticeable delay, compared to my Note 2 running a custom ROM this thing is slooooowwww.

These are the places I notice it the most. My stock SMS app was giving me hell for a while...constantly not responding. I'd hit back 3 times before it would do anything and then it was like fast forward. I have never used a stock SMS app...always GoSMS. I have been giving the stock apps a chance to use the smart features. When I restored my text messages to the S4 I recall it restoring like 17,000 messages. My GF talks a lot! I then realized that the stock app was giving me crap when I was in a thread that was very large. If I went in a new thread or smaller one it worked fine. I went in settings and changed it to 350 messages and 65 MMS and then delete. I assume it did that at some point because now it's moving smooth on all threads.
With the gallery app, none of them ever load the thumbnails right away. There's always some lag with gray boxes and then the thumbnail appears. This has been the case on all my phones....even Note 2.

I don't remember too much about my Note 2 when stock, but the gallery was extremely slow on that as well. I didn't notice a lag though when going between menus and so forth, so it seems to be a bit worse on the S4.
I used to use GoSMS, but they really went downhill IMO. Lots of spam texts, reminders about other Go software, hardly any free themes anymore, and it got more bloated and slow.
I haven't experienced any lag.
The stock S4 rom is about 2 GB (HUGE). Once we get some debloated roms I think we'll notice a big increase in speed.

Sorry some of you have had or are having issues. I myself haven't seen any lag at all, it's been butter smooth. Also very snappy when i first got it yesterday but have since turned off about half or a little more of the smart stuff. This will be even more amazing once Dan releases the unlock bootloader and the custom ROMs hit.

I've turned off every smart stay and airview feature on this phone, froze/uninstalled about 30 apps, and still have the lag. If you're coming from an older phone like the Thunderbolt, GNex, etc. this phone will seem really fast and smooth, but if you're coming from a new phone (especially one with a custom ROM) such as the S3 or Note 2, the S4 seems slower.
Butter here.
I'm running Nova Launcher. The stock messaging app does seem to stumble a tad with contacts but that is usual.
I have a friend running Slim ROM on his Note II, with Gapps the entire ROM is 97MB. I can barely notice the difference of mine and his and I haven't even rooted this yet. There is virtually no delay from tapping a button till it comes up I'm never waiting for anything. If I'm on it for like an hour I might see something barely stutter once or twice during that hour.
I think it is just from 1 phone to another. Some reviews have no lag in the phone at all while some ppl claim lag all over so I don't know.
I did have horrible lag when I first got it. It took several hours to download all my apps (about 30-40). Everything was soooo sloooow. Same keyboard issues mentioned above.
Once I got everything set up and cut off haptic and sound on keyboard, it's been smooth. Rooted on stock rom with nothing froze. But out of the box, it was pretty laggy.

I'm curious... Do you apply/wanna apply a lag fix because your device is actually lagging or is it just the thing to do nowadays? I ask because I have never found a need for one. The only lag I had on the Vibrant was when I first took it out of the box and even that was kinda tolerable. But as things are right now, I really don't see how my device could get any faster and if it could...why? Quadrant scores? What is the real advantage (if any) to having it? .02¢
Lag fix? Never have, never will!
High quadrant scores. Do you see the first thing most people mention when they install the lag fix?
"My quadrant score went from 200 to 2000!!!!!!!!" as if it was an indicator of actual performance.
No good, controlled tests have been conducted.
I don't use it. The one time I did, when it was included in the kernel with BLN, I had horrible battery life. Most people use it to get higher scores. The N1 would run circles around the Vibrant in terms of scores but when in real world testing, both devices are just as fast.
It's not just scores...
It makes your system a bit faster people nowadays do it without needing to and there's nothing wrong with that.
I run a lagfix and it has improved my speed and response.
Without making me lose any battery

Point taken, but looking at most of the threads in the Q&A section...it seems that the LF's do more harm than good, especially if you aren't too sure about what you're doing.
Lag fix? Never have, never will!
The lag fix circumvents RFS in many areas.
Galaxy S phones have terrible I/O performance. Notably Database Read/Writes and apps that work generally hit the storage often.
Run Touchdown on a Galaxy S phone without a lag fix and you'll see how sluggish that application runs due to RFS. The workaround is to move the database to the external SD Card (which results in frequent corruptions) or install a lag fix.
It also causes the phone to take an inordinate amount of time to boot up (Media Scanning... etc.) and lag randomly when applications sync and access the storage to write data. It lags when Installing and Uninstalling applications from the Android market as well.
If you think a Lag Fix is only to boost Quadrant Scores (those scores are bunk, anyways), then perhaps you're using a different phone in a Vibrant casing.
There are several applications littered with "laggy on my Galaxy S" in the market.
Also, there is a bug in the Samsung Android 2.1 kernel that breaks some applications. That's why there are apps popping up saying you need 2.2 on your Galaxy S phone to run them (Skype, Yahoo Messenger, etc.).
My Vibrant, both before and after JI6, was laggy to the point of not being usable - until I applied RyanZA's OCLF (I removed OCLF and tried voodoo but soft-bricked the phone in the process). I've never run the Quadrant score analysis - all I care about is usability of the phone, and after the OCLF was applied my phone became usable.
I tried Axura 2.0.x with no lag fixes and, while my phone was generally faster than JI6 pre-lag fix, it still suffered from lag in many user interactions (opening apps, launching email, reading individual emails, using gallery, etc.) I went back to stock + JI6 via ODIN, reapplied OCLF, and was happy again.
Are there different hardware revisions of the Vibrant that might account for the differences in user experience? I've seen many posts from users who claim they never had any lag or GPS problems, and many more (like me) who have been plagued with them.
Most of those users are fanboys and wouldn't admit it even if they fot one of those 5+ second lockups while making their post.

It's cause the phone is laggy. I don't usr lag fixes because I don't lile tampering with phones at the system level, regardless, but I have freezes several times a day and have even had my phone completely lock up on me a couple of times - requiring a battery pull.
The less services you have running, and the less apps that sync data runnimg, the less the lag is. The lag happens mostly when the storagr is used (background syncing can cause it, for example).

It has made some apps actually usable.
Before the lag fix, the facebook app was basically unusable for me. Any action would have a 5-10 second pause before seeing a result.
Swipe to scroll, wait, click a picture, wait.
I think the facebook app was the worse for me because I did manual updates so every time I launched the app, it would be d/ling and writing while I was trying to scroll around and read stuff.
But in general, it has made my phone usable. Before I did the lag fix, I basically stopped using my phone because it got so annoying having to wait.
I've never run quadrant on my phone actually. I don't even really use root for anything. I did it primarily for the lag fix and the I changed my battery bar so that it's accurate. Everything else I'm happy with.
So, could this just be an issue that only certain phones have? Or, could some of it be mental? Like, if you hear enough ppl say that this is broken or that isn't working...you start to think that yours is broken also? I've never had an issue with gps...and I use foursquare and navigation on a regular basis. But everybody else seems to have broken gps.

I have 2 email account, syncmypix, weather apps & news updating every hour and i have never had any lag problems, even running on JI2 stock, much less ever had phone freezes. The ONLY time I had phone freezing was messing with those OC kernels, which I promptly uninstalled.
Let me ask people that run lag fixes this, when playing with the Vibrant at the t-mobile store, why did you choose buy it if you were experiencing this "lag", especially when it was running stock firmware?
edit: I also ran JFS lag fix for a day, but that drained my battery faster than a fat kid ate cake. It was not even noticeably faster either.

The home switchers and unofficial roms are morw mental due to placebo effect - some lag fixes aren't even that good, but people claim tenfold improvements due to placebo effect...

The phone T the store wasn't syncing a google and corp accoumt, plus facebook, plus twitter, and other apps. It simply wadn't prone to lagging, brcausr no user in their righy mind sets their **** up on a display unit just to test it.
Btw, "why didn't you test it for 10 min before you bought it" is getting old.

Many people thought an update would fix it, like the gps.

I've done it on pretty much every phone I've owned, but like I said its not really nessicary, if anything its a slight stutter, but either way its not different than other android phones I've used (even my vibrant using a lag fix). its really just my preference to sync manually.
I've noticed that there is a good amount of lag in response to touch input on my rezound. I'm wondering if this is normal for this phone? had this day one with mine. is it new or you've had it for a bit?
i ended up swapping mine out at a vzw store the day after it arose, would take a little, but would consistently lag. if new, try swapping it. if not, backup and try a wipe.
Try using a task killer if you don't already. I normally have this problem when I have too many apps running at once.

On ICS and GB, my notification bar lags, but for ICS I've noticed pointer lag, and jittery browser scrolling. I use the dev tools to show touch input, and there is some lag. I'm thinking that if you change the max events per sec in the build.prop, that should fix the lag, and improve overall responsiveness.

^No... Just no... Task killers = fail.
I have intermittent issues with Sense-based roms, that I also experienced on stock that I'm wondering if anyone else has or has a fix for. Basically, sporadically the brightness toggle in the Power Control widget becomes very slow for the hardware to respond. Another issue that may be related as this happens with phone calls too, and I suspect the two may be related if it is the result of a background process being killed by Sense's own aggressive background process killing.
I'll hit the toggle and get immediate visual feedback (button effect occurs on the UI), I'll hit it a few more times with still no effect. Then, maybe 5-10 seconds later, the actual screen brightness will start toggling like crazy based on how many times I clicked it. Similarly in the phone app, if I dial a number and hit the button to connect, nothing happens. It just hangs out for like 5-10+ seconds then if I'm lucky actually goes to connect the call. This issue occurs sporadically, and seems to be independent of any load-based factors. I suspect it's a software issue as I don't experience anything of the sort under CM10... I would love to just stay on CM10 but I have a variety of radio-based issues with that that make this not an acceptable avenue (sadly).
Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Those are all definitely Sense related problems and its from problems like yours that I switched to CM10. Can you go into further depth with your radio problem?

I tried the latest stable available from CM, as well as Deck's latest CM10 and have been experiencing the following symptoms that, unfortunately, despite how AWESOME my phone feels on CM10 over Sense, they're a deal breaker for me.
GPS Issue: For some odd reason the phone has trouble holding onto a GPS lock. For me it is specifically glaring in Google Maps Navigation where I'm driving along fine with a lock on my position, then Navigation will zoom out with only very broad accuracy (assume via radio-location) and say the message to the effect of "Looking for GPS" for 10-15+ seconds, reacquires a lock, holds it for maybe 1-2 minutes, then rinses/repeats. I did try the Sense GPS fix for this to no avail.
Phone Issue: I've read a lot of people having LTE issues w/ this, but with no LTE avail in my area this is the least of my concerns. My problem is that it seems to sporadically lose CDMA connectivity or something...the network status indicator switches to this right-aligned right triangle Just like this one in the attached image labelled "Emergency Calls". This occurs even if I switch the network to CDMA only... Not a HUGE annoyance except for when I'm on a call, it gets immediately dropped and I look at my phone and that damn icon is showing for network status, though it comes back to service within about 5 seconds. I have tried flashing the updated radios from themikmik, though that didn't seem to pacify the problem.
So yeah, that's why I'm back on this damn bloated Sense If you have any suggestions on how to fix either of these I would be forever in your debt
Honestly, I've run Sense 90% of the time since I got mine the first day it was available without these issues... I know some people reported contact lag but I've never seen it and most sense roms claim to have a fix for it built in.
I'm on the lastest stock OTA rooted and I just sat like an idiot mashing the brightness button for 2 straight minutes with no lag, just smooth transitions in brightness. Even the switch animation worked smoothly the whole time. You may have too many apps installed, or one particular app causing it.
Edit: Maybe you already use this but if not, try it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700211
You might even have a bad wipe,
Edit #2: And now after mashing it a bunch more times I finally replicated it lol.. Hmmm, I guess I was wrong. But its really a hard to replicate bug unless your using your power widget to turn your phone into a strobe light.

I know it isn't something everyone experiences; Though I'm more concerned with those who may have experienced, and have discovered a fix. I've tried virtually every Sense ROM in high consumption hoping this will go away including MeanROM, CleanROM DE 1.5 (was my favorite for a long time, but problem resurfaced there), Viper4G. This issue occurring in stock is what prompted me to try a custom rom to begin with.

I'm on MeanROM 6.5, and just did the same thing you did successfully. It's an intermittent issue that doesn't occur most of the time... but when it DOES occur it is extremely annoying. I will try to see if I can determine if another app could be causing this, but if there is it is just another thing that makes me hate Sense... changing screen brightness and initiating a phone call should be some pretty low-level API calls that shouldn't be dependent on or affected by other running apps... supported by the fact that I have never experienced this issue on CM10 or any of the other AOSP-based roms despite having all the same apps running.

Yeah, I user superwipe between every ROM install.
It's not a certain app in general. The main culprit is sense. That process/software causes the whole phone to be a lag machine regardless of what rom you have it on. Trust me I went through stock and viper4g(which I super wiped prior to installing) and still no prevail. HTC is going to have to fix sense BIG TIME to get rid of these lag issues.

I assume he's referring to the idea that people use their phones for more things than just swiping between home screens... compared to CM10, basic things like launching apps feels like driving down the street with cement in your trunk.
Ok your right its not laggy but there is literally no multitasking and some other processes like earbud remote controls literally takes half a minute for the phone to process. Sense is just bad for your phone.

Absolutely, 100% spot on.
So I got a verizon s4 two days ago.
I rooted it, and installed CleanROM to get rid of the bloatware, and so far I DO like it. It's very fast, and iOS smooth....or so it was....
So, I don't know what happened, but I'm getting some slight lag in the launcher now. Moving through homescreens or in the app drawer has some slight 'fidgeting'. It's not exactly bad, but I can compare it to the speed of a late 2011 android phone I guess.
I believe this only is happening in the homescreen and app drawer and their respective animations. But after getting used to that silky smooth experience I had yesterday, it's a bit concerning.
And yes again, I have rebooted the device a good number of times. The smoothness is back, but after 30 or so minutes of use, it's back to that fidgeting.
Any ideas, guys? This is a powerhouse of a phone and I really don't expect to be getting this type of lag.
I am also running CleanROM 1.5 on my S4, but cannot duplicate your lag issue. I have no lag, rom is super fast and stable for me. Did you do a clean flash?

The main issue is that you have never ran the phone stock for a few days to determine if it is a rom issue or a phone issue.
But I do not have any of the lag you are describing. I am stock unrooted. Try to Odin to stock so you can compare.

It pisses me off to see me and many others complain about such a basic thing as LAG in this "super powerful" device.
What is the point of all this tons of CPU, huge RAM and etc., if it cannot manage basic tasks quickly. that's great that i can play 3D games, but I want my phone to be responsive as it used to be in the beginning.
How come I need to wait for 5 seconds for my contact list to load? 3 seconds for my SMS to load, 2 seconds for an app to load in the application center. 1.5 second until it responds to a home button. You expect this kind of basic tasks to be done INSTANTLY.
So what if I have lots of contacts? Doesn't Android follow BASIC programming concepts?
That is first load the frame, then show LOADING, then load the most necessary (in that case would be the first part of the list) and then load the rest. This way it doesn't feel laggy for the user. How come it simply loads for 5 seconds without any response and then shows ALL at once.
Everything is laggy, almost anything I press takes 1-2 seconds to respond the first time. Second time is mostly instant.
Tried to clean cache of all apps, using memory cleaners, disable double home click, I am at version 4.3, using Go Launcher.
How can I find if there's a specific app that causing it? Or what should I clean to make it go smooth as it used to be when it was new? all these task managers and such don't make ANY difference. Total waste of time.
Don't mind me being pissed and thank you for your input
P.S. - My device is not rooted.
yeah....that's why i put my S4 aside and bought the G2. it's touchwiz. it's horribly optimized and has been since JB. on ICS, touchwiz was great. it was snappy, fast, awesome. it was amazing on my S3. then the S3 got JB, and it turned to utter garbage. now, every samsung phone since JB is awful.
they really need to scrap TW and code it all over again.
I'm not getting this 5 second lag. 1 and a half seconds perhaps on the contact list and I have maybe 210 people on there.
If you're getting 5 seconds of lag I think something's up. I'm getting pretty quick responses WITH Power-Saving Mode enabled. With it disabled I don't really notice anything different tbh lol.
Sorry you're having a pain of a time. If you're going to get a new phone I would suggest the Nexus 5
I'm stock non-rooted.
Nova Launcher
That's it.

Nah, I'm not gonna get a new phone just because of that.
Could you perhaps tell me with which accounts you sync your contact list? I would assume that's related. Also are you trying it after your has been idle for a while? (it's much more responsive when I open it the second time)
Because of all the bloat you have installed...take off go launcher lol

Go launcher is the worst. Go to the dev settings and change animation time to 0.5x or off, get apex or nova and use the fastest animation speeds, try different dialer & messaging apps. Don't use memory cleaners or task managers just delete whatever apps you don't use. Basically avoid using as much touchwiz crap as possible lol. Also know that live wallpaper and a lot of widgets cash slow things down too. I would think keeping all the stupid proximity sensor stuff on doesn't help either.

It really does suck how slow this phone is considering it's hardware. Samsung needs to hire some new people because my girlfriend's htc one is very smooth and snappy with almost no lag (minus att 's slow 4g network) I wish htc would pull their heads out of their a**es and build good phones with good cameras with removable batteries and sd cards :banghead:

If you go through and disable stuff like crazy it improves, but that doesn't really speak well for Samsung.
Frankly I'm done with 'em as a company.

I agree. But with htc in the sh*tter and Samsung heading in a similar direction, what other manufacturer is worth a damn? Or even half of one?

I'm using nova prime as well as quite a few xposed mods including XuiMod.
All my nova settings are at faster than light, XuiMod settings are also set to fast, and I've set the transition animation scales to 0 /. 5 as well.
My S4 flies. I have no complaints at all. I've used titanium and gotten rid of all the BS too.
I agree TW has a lot going on but can be set up quite good and run quite fast. I've looked at other phones over and over again, trying to get back into flashing ROMs, but I keep landing back at my S4. It's still an awesome phone

Don't mistaken transition speed for loading/processing speed which are two totally different things. The S4 is no slouch, if it's "lagging" like you said, it's an app for sure. I nor anyone I know with an S4 has experienced this phantom lag. But then again we don't blow up our phone with launchers, widgets, or 5 different apps telling me my battery level and apps running. Try using stock everything (launchers, dialers*lol*, messaging*lol*)

whatever61, did your phone behave like you have explained (lag) when you first bought it? If the answer is no then you have an apps/widgets/or other software on the phone causing you the problem. The ole' saying 'keep it simple stupid' kind of applies here (not saying at all that you are stupid). There are only so many resources in our phones...cpu capabilities, memory etc. The resources in our S4s are pretty significant considering the size and the limited power available. It really boils down to this...the more task you demand your phone to perform the more resources it uses and at some point it has to slow down to reallocate the limited resources it has...lag. Task managers use more resources than they save...live wallpaper is a resource hog...widgets (weather, facebook, goggle now, goggle +, pandora etc) constantly updating and running are resource hogs...contracts with added thumbnails, although "neat", take up not only memory but take longer (resources) to process when you want to look at one (when you call up a contact do you want the information or do you want to look at a picture, which one of those do you NEED?)...email and messaging apps that have to sync more than a few days of old mail/messages is a waste time and resources...Samsung has put a lot of "cute" animations and gesture sensitive "crap" on our phones...they are "cute" but not necessary and use resources. Bottom line...do a factory reset, decide what you need and "keep it simple stupid". (Again, I'm not calling you stupid!!).
Don't worry, I didn't think you are calling me stupid
Yes, if I remember correctly in the beginning it was working faster (but cannot say for sure what and where was the lag already existing and where it wasn't) and what you're saying about widgets, lots of apps and all that is very obvious and very general (thanks for the input, though). The don't install too many apps or reset to factory approach is not something I think a correct approach. I bought a super powerful phone to be able to install whatever I want on it, right?
Besides an example that I provide is that when I am in the application manager and pressing on an application it takes like 2 seconds to open up. I don't think it's related to me having too many apps.
I think that I should be able to see which app is causing the lag in each case and then make my decision based on it. Yes, I can install different task managers to show me which app is taking how much CPU and RAM, but I don't see anything exceptional there. Problem is at specific actions I do, so it would be good to see what happens (like in Chrome inspect element) when I press on the action, which processes are being launched, how much time it takes for them to complete and how much CPU was used at each process. A log like that would do the job.
Besides my post was more about the wrong engineering (see the example of the Contact list lag) and the fact that many people complain about the lag in S4 and a question if someone knows about a tool that can help me find what is causing the lag (see description of the tool above).
Thanks

I don't like "stock everything", besides seems to me like stock stuff is even more laggy.
I don't blow up my phone with stuff neither and I think the reason lies in something else (see my post above for a better explanation)

I understand your frustration and your point is well taken. I don't know of a utility/app that will enable you to clearly identify an app or process that is causing the lag you experience. I know doing a Factory Reset is a big PITA and I never recommend that to someone unless I know of no other "cure" for the problem. And, sometimes a Factory Reset isn't the cure either. But often it is. The reason I recommended Factory Reset is that it is about the only way you can (that I know of) start with a "clean" phone and nail down the app or apps that are causing a problem as you reinstall them one or two at a time. I have a developer edition S4, rooted and bootloader unlocked, and I usually will do a factory reset every two or three weeks even while running a ROM that has been debloated and "fine tuned". It usually improves battery life and the phone works smoother...or maybe it's just my imagination, but I don't think so. Anyway, good luck, hope you find the problem. Maybe some wise ole' guy will come along and point you in the right direction.

Well, for the most reliable experience, it is always best to stick with stock.
My advice is to run stock everything for a day to see if that's the problem. Your other option would be a factory reset in which I am trying to make you avoid.
Do you have 3rd party apps installed like sms/launcher/dialer/lockscreen/etc.? I can't imagine the amount of processes going on if someone had all those apps installed.

I really dont understand why people complain about this so called lag. I've had no such thing since I got my s4 right when they came out.
My girlfriend gets her S4 acting all strange sometimes too, can seem laggy. However she is constantly downloading music and she uses like 3 programs to do so. I've had to remove quite a few of those apps and then it's working like new again. Sometimes a lot of the apps available out there just aren't the best and can screw things right up I think. I've had none of the issues she's had. Mine has been fast as hell since day one. And hers is back to normal too, I just have to keep an eye on her!!

This post is ancient, but I still got the problem
I am just curious if other S4 users have the same problem or most don't ?
Then I will know that something is possible to do for sure, at least..
