Hey guys got my GS4 last week and noticed it synced everyone and their mother to my contacts that I have ever sent an email through on my gmail account. Any way I was updating the contacts and Im running into all kind of problems.
1) Im getting force closes all the time when trying to link duplicate contacts in the system.
2) at times its only showing me the phone numbers of people under text messages and not show the peoples names
3) just clicking on the contacts icon under the apps try takes forever to load.
4) When navigating through contacts getting a lot of blank screens.
So here is my question ... any ideas?
Im using Nova Launcher Prime ...

I'm not having the issue. Have you tried:
Removing Sync and allowing it to resync your contacts
Factory Reset?
Are you stock, rooted, or.........? I'm thinking you're stock rooted?

I must be confused......."what" is one of the reasons that you don't want to do a factory reset? This won't change your stock status.

That is true........but I think that would be less time than the time spent trying to fix the issue..........
Try restoring Samsung Account. Samsung backs up contacts, and whether you are using that or not, it is probably hooked into the Contacts app.
Edit: You may want to enable Verizon Logon too.
I have the same problem but have not found a solution yet
I am experiencing the same problem, along with a couple other related ones. I have looked in different forums and found a couple people reporting similar problems but no solutions yet. Here is what I have tried so far:
Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4
SCH-I545
Android 4.2.2
Baseband version I545VRUAME7
Never rooted
I have had a Samsung Galaxy S4, through Verizon, since it first came out. The device was never rooted. It worked fine until a few weeks ago, when it developed a strange cluster of intermittent problems:
1. The contacts, which are synced from a personal Gmail account and a work Exchange account, just vanish on the phone. When the problem occurs, if I run the Contacts app, it displays no contacts at all. If I choose the "Contacts to display" option from the menu, sometimes it displays a blank screen, sometimes it displays "Initializing SIM card," and sometimes it displays "Updating contacts." All the contacts are still intact on the respective servers, as well as on my Nexus 7 tablet. The email and calendar items from these two accounts work normally. Only contacts are affected. Just as suddenly as they disappear, they will spontaneously reappear on the phone.
2. Text messages usually cannot be sent or received when the problem is occurring. I can sometimes send a text by entering the phone number manually, but names cannot be used, since the contacts are not available.
3. I often cannot dial outgoing calls. I can receive incoming calls, but cannot dial out. This seems to be because the Phone app is trying to access the contacts, which are not available.
4. The problem usually is not resolved by power cycling the phone, but often when I try to power cycle it, it hangs on the Verizon splash screen during boot, forcing a battery pull. This often happens 3 or 4 times in a row.
I spent hours on the phone with Samsung tech support. They thought it might be a SIM card issue. They suggested a new SIM card. Verizon gave me a new one. It was fine til the next morning, when the problem recurred.
The next suggestion was that the SIM card reader may be bad. Verizon provided a replacement phone, which worked fine for a few days, then started doing the same thing. The original phone, with no SIM or SD cards installed, also continued to have the problem.
The next suggestion was another factory reset after disabling the automatic app and setting re-installation. I only reinstalled the apps I use most frequently. Again, it was fine for a couple days, then started again. I have tried uninstalling various apps, but inevitably the problem comes back.
At the time the problem began, I had not made any recent configuration or app changes, so nothing jumps out at me as a potential cause.
Except for the problems listed above, all the other apps and functions are fine. However, when this occurs, it really cripples the phone.

Have you tried removing the account/s from the phone? (Google & exchange). Clear contacts storage and re-adding the accounts?

Thank you for your response. Yes, I did remove the accounts and resend then. Sorry, I should have included that in the original post. Also, the problem recurred on a replacement device and again after factory reset on that replacement.

Wow, weird issue to be sure. Almost sounds like your accounts are might be what is corrupt. For kicks and giggles I'd try creating another Google account. Enter some of your main contacts manually then see if it stays stable after you add that account. Just keep the other one off the phone til you see. Or just add your Google account and leave out the exchange and see if it stays stable. I bet one or the other is jacked.

hey Vegas,
so I noticed I was having some issues with my contacts -- basically i would get phone freezes .. mainly with stock text app and contacts app. it became super annoying -- this was about 2 months after owning the phone. was stock, but rooted .. never upgraded to me7.
i tried everything ... clearing data for contacts, letting resync, etc. Honestly, the only thing that worked for me was finally slapping on a ROM. i went with a me7 ROM and haven't had the issue anymore ... granted i've been running on it only 3 days... however this issue was something that was happening daily, if not more frequently.
my suggestion -- bite the bullet and either factory reset your phone (if you are stock and don't have a recovery) or put on a ROM if you are rooted and have a recovery
enjoy

Thanks. I don't believe the accounts are the problem. Both accounts work perfectly on my Nexus 7 tablet, even when the problem is occurring on the phone. They are also fine when accessing the servers directly over the web or at work on the network PC.

I went on deployment for about 3 months and had my phone in airplane mode for the entire time...once i returned to the states, it seems as if all of my contacts have gotten messed up. Numbers I had are no longer in my contacts, Facebook won't sync contact pictures, numbers, etc. Number I have aren't showing up as the persons name...i.e. 123-657-3828 should show up Mr. Mister but instead it shows up as the number...Anyone have any idea what's going on and how to rectify?

Maybe try removing your Google account from accounts and sync and then add it again and sync up.

Oh god, don't use facebook sync, its horrible at this point. Rely on google and all your problems will be solved.
I recently did a factory reset on my phone and ran into this problem after the phone froze and restarted. I knew the contacts were on my SIM card as I moved them there in case my backup failed. If all your contacts are on your SIM, try taking the card out, put it back in, then start up the phone again. I've had to do it twice since my reset. Hope that helps.

Little frustrated with the Motorola Atrix and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.
I am having an issue with SMS messages going to the wrong individual or starting a second threaded conversation with the same contact even though there is only one instance of this contact and one phone number attached. It's very similar to the reported issue 9392 that was supposed to be addressed sometime a while back.
This is my second Atrix and I have experienced the problem on both handsets. My first purchase was back in April of this year and within weeks that problem started to occur. I had tried various custom ROMs and SMS applications - but they all had the same issue.
The second handset was just received this week. I have gone through and completely cleaned up any duplicate contacts and exported them all to a CSV file and re-imported in hopes of finding a culprit contact. I am syncing with Exchange 2007, but had disabled Google Contacts, MotoBlur, Blah, Blah. Now I am only syncing contacts with Google and mail and calendar with Exchange.
I have completely reset the device and running full stock ROM with no applications installed outside of what is included in the image with the phone. Since a majority of my communication is via SMS on my phone - it has become a big hassle. I just get tired of having to apologize and explain my misguided text over and over again.
I have tried several 3rd party SMS apps and all have the same issue.
Anything you guys could suggest would be greatly appreciated. The only thing that I could possibly think of that I have not done is replace the SIM card which is one I got with my first iPhone a few years back.
**Note: I have a WP7 running Mango that does not have this issue.
I'd be leaning toward a bad sim. Why don't you just go to your carrier and get a new one? AT&T has never charged me for a replacement sim. Just explain your issue and that you've tried all other avenues to correct the problem.
For the duplicate thread I was able to solve with
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1210840
others said it didnt work if they were syncing facebook contacts.. I dont sync
contacts with anyone but gmail contacts.
but here is the basis of the fix that worked for me
Ok I think I solved it my last solution wasn't did not continue to work.
your contacts need to be stored / saved as
this format +12223331234 and some work with just 2223331234
but all work with the first (so far)
(111) 222-3333, +1-111-222-3333 both fail
if you look how the sms db stores them its like the format first mentioned and when using that format there are no duplicates

Well, I tried to replace both the SIM and reformatted the numbers as suggested.
However, neither of those worked - so I dug a little more and narrowed it down to Motoblur and adding accounts under it.
I did find that if I did a hard reset of my phone and then used a new email address to setup a 'New' MotoBlur account (since you can't delete or reset an existing one) and then did not add accounts under MotoBlur - the issue resolved itself.
I still added a google account and exchange account - but everything else, like facebook, I downloaded the application to avoid MotoBlur from aggregating information into.
Hope that makes some sense and thanks for the reply.
Hoping someone can help me out. For the past couple of weeks, I haven't been able to send emails out using the Gmail app. I can compose, attach, save....but when I go to hit the send button, or choose send from the menu, the button grays out instantly and nothing sends. Doesn't even go to the outbox.
I've read around the forums for the TB and other devices having the same issues and tried all of the tips. I've wiped app data, app cache, uninstalled all updates, uninstalled the .apk, reinstalled from the market. None of those potential solutions have worked for me . Sync works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: it's happened on multiple roms, so I know that isn't the issue.
Thank God!
Sorry...I am just happy I am not the only person dealing with this.
I am experiencing the EXACT same thing. I was just about to post everything you did...plus
I cleared all drafts from GMail. I cleared all sent mail from Gmail. I have tried unistalling and reinstalling gmail. I have tried serveral different methods for restoring everything....
- skipping setup and turning off auto-restore and auto sync restoring everything with TiBu
- skipping setup and turning off auto-restore and auto sync restoring everything with MyBuPro
- skipping setup and turning off auto-restore. Signing in to google letting sync complete including apps. Then waiting 15 mins...rebooting and manually restoring only my missing user apps via TiBu.
- loaded the 2.11.605.3 rooted and deodexed but otherwise stock RUU posted in the deveopment forum and still it happened after restoring all my apps.
Everytime...I think I have it beat...but within a day...NOPE! No sending again.
At first I thought it was restoring the apps...BUT
What is F'n strange is that it does not break as soon as the restore is finished. In fact I make sure to email myself at another email address each step of the way to make sure if I can identify where I am going wrong. Each time everything is fine at first.
It is usually between a few hours and a day when Gmail stops working.
This last time I noticed that the gmail app updates itself when I am done...even if I make sure not to in my restore. But I immediately sent myself an email to that address and it worked. Then several hours later...it was broken again.
Not sure if this is related...but I noticed that gmail duplicates that address in the drop down after it breaks. What I mean is that when I type the first few letters of my name....all my emails show up....but each only once. But after it breaks ... the email I sent the tests too shows up in that list twice.
This is the most maddening thing I have ever dealt with in my 3 years of owning some rooted droid or another.
I am tempted to just unroot and restore to stock...and pray that it goes away and does not plague me ever again after 11.11.11
Return to stock and see if the problem persists. If it does call up verizon, explain to them what is happening, may be a problem with the phone, not sure how, but just maybe.
I assume this is the best way?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
So I tried wiping and loading a fresh install...and only reinstalled a few of the most vital and used apps.
Have had no problem for 3 days. So clearly it was a bad app causing this. I will experiment this weekend to see if I can figure out which one.
I've had this problem come and go, but telling Titanium Backup to wipe the data for the GMail app always fixes the issue for me.
Can you wipe data of primary gmail address? What happens then - does it take you to the startup screen to sign into gmail from scratch?

It just does it for the whole app... So basically all 4 of my GMail accounts had no messages on the phone until the app successfully synced with GMail. Sending normally works fine after that.
I'll try that next time. Thanks
Dad had a weird problem with his Samsung Galaxy - all the contacts duplicated numerous times so that sometimes there were 15-20 of each and it didn't matter if they were stored on the Sim card or in the phone.
Carphone Warehouse told him it was faulty and caused by water damage even though it had never got wet and everything else works fine, so he bought a HTC Sensation XL put the sim card in and then the exact same thing happened, so he sent that phone back and got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus which he's had a week, and guess what? it's happened again
All the contacts have been deleted off the sim card so its blank and Dad only entered 6 or 7 contact details into the phone, then today all of a sudden there are multiple copies of some of the contacts - any ideas what the cause is or for a cure? Dad is on Orange pay monthly and has already had a replacement sim card in case the first was faulty.
Cheers
Perhaps it could be synced Google Contacts?
Or any other kind of contact syncs?
Any kind of backup (Titanium Backup, MyBackup, etc?) that would restore the numbers?
Did he/you install any apps before this happening? Any contact/phone/sms/dialer apps perhaps?
No he hasn't synced with Google Contacts apart from when its forced on the Nexus, but he has no contacts to sync anyway as he dosen't use a computer, his only contacts are what he's manually entered. He hasn't downloaded any apps at all, and uses the phone as it come out the box - he only has it cause he likes the big touchscreen and he can see it ok, he dosen't use any features apart from calls, texts, email and the camera.
Hmm, sounds very weird indeed.
You said you tried both getting a replacement SIM card and a brand new phone, but not at the same time?
I would suggest doing a factory reset and a SIM card wipe (or even a replacement if easily possible) at the same time, and then try and enter 1 NEW phonenumber (not one that's been in the phone/SIM card before) and leave it for the amount of time that it took before it began multiplying the numbers before, to see if it does it again.
If it doesn't, try and enter some of the old numbers into the phone, and so on.
If it does multiply, then I don't know what's wrong.

Contacts you manually enter are automatically set to sync with Google contacts. What I think is happening is you keep resetting the phone and he enters in the contacts before all the Google contacts from the previous times are being restored therefore all the multiples are being synced together. So let the phone sit after a restore. The multiples should show up after a little bit. Go through and delete the duplicates and see if they come back.

Cheers I think you may have solved the problem
I logged into Dads google account online and found his contacts and there were 529 with loads of duplicates (40 or 50 of some), so I deleted the lot, turned off autobackup to google and sync on his phone and did a factory reset - he now has no contacts on the sim card, in the phone or stored with google so hopefully when he re-enters them they won't duplicate, I'll give it a few days then see what happens if I let it back-up and sync, but I've a feeling its sorted it.

I am running on the latest stock Verizon firmware on my Note 2. Starting last week I've been having this very annoying issue where at least once a day, all my contacts will disappear on my phone. I am using my Google contacts as my only source of contacts, it is a fairly simple contact list with no extra labels or anything complicated involved. When the contacts disappear, I go under settings --> (accounts) Google --> my gmail account, and see an error under Contacts stating "Sync error: Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Hitting "Sync Now" again and again will not clear this error. When I restart my phone, the sync will work and my contacts will return, but after a day this error will occur again and my contact list disappears.
I have tried removing my google account from the phone, restarting, and readding the account without success. I have tried going under settings --> application manager and deleting the cache for the phone, contact list, and messanger without any effect. I have also tried completely resetting the phone and starting from scratch without any success as well.
It is sad because I have never had this issue before on my previous android phone (Droid X) and it is making me want to throw this phone against the wall!
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Try downloading app "Contacts Sync Fix" from the Play store. Worked for me!

Problem solved: I have an application called Call Control Pro that blocks telemarketer phone numbers. Apparently there was a bug that caused all contacts to disappear requiring a reboot for them to come back, process then repeats daily. They fixed the issue in the latest update. Thank goodness, because I was being driven crazy by this issue.
