I plan to return my EVO tomorrow to avoid ETF. My question is, is it ok if I leave my EVO S-off and Unlocked?
Thank you!

not clear as to how you're avoiding an ETF by returning a year-old phone, but in any case: it seems unnecessarily risky to return your phone S-OFF and unlocked, as it's considered a violation of your warranty.
you could easily return it to locked and S-ON status, why not take half an hour and do it real quick?

No sent it to me and ill send mine to u. That way ihave s-off since cant seem get there.

I doubt anything is ever going to come with an unlocked bootloader. People could mess up their phones and say it happened during an OTA. They won't be able to tell if it was really during an OTA or they did it themselves since the person would have S-OFF either way. They would either have to cancel their warranty or not have phones with unlocked bootloaders.
I understand the wait, but at least some word from Rev; 'hey guys still working on the 1.50 hboot unlock...' .
Here is what pisses me off royally. See, HTC is requiring users to sign a electronic document that bypasses the Magnuson Moss Act; requires manufactures to prove that the alteration is what caused the warranty claim. Ie, car owner comes to the dealership because engine blew. Dealership notices that owner put on aftermarket exhaust, dealership will not warranty the engine. HTC is technically bypassing all that stating that rooting your phone, you are opting out of any factory or extended warranty. Ie, phone no turny on, HTC > You = po3ned . Sure they'll take a look at it, only to tell you that it is now going to cost you $xxx.xx to fix it.
Its odd that they say unlock the phone but all they do is unlock the mmc protection to the file system and still void parts of the warranty.
The boot partition where the kernel lives is still protected and unflashable without using the work around.
Seems to me they are benefiting from this "unlock" more than anyone.
first of all htc never said that.

You make a very good point, but I have one word for you; partnership. If you go back and read HTC and Sprint's Terms and Agreements it states that by agreeing to the T&A you are allowing the sharing of information. If Sprint says that by agreeing to the unlock you void the 'manufacture's' warranty, then you are doing just that by agreeing to the unlock.
But again, I applaud you for thinking outside the box. For once some people are beginning to see behind the facade.
You can flash everything but radios , correct me if I'm wrong

Htc never said what? Did you even read the thing you agreed to when you went to use their "unlock"?
The manufacturer 1 year warranty is done with HTC not Sprint

I'm getting a Flyer from Best Buy in a couple of weeks and was wondering are some of them shipping with S-OFF???
I doubt any unopened units are S-OFF. You might get an open box that has been returned that way. Why do you ask?

I thought I read somewhere that some of them shipped with S-OFF. Maybe they meant not in North America. I have the EVO 4G so I know what needs to be done on it.
Maybe with unlocked bootloader but I don't think with native S-off.

Yeah, don't confuse S-off with Unlock, they are not the same, S-OFF allows flashing of the radio and other protected firmware. Unlock allows for root, but not for flashing the radio.
Thanks
thanks for this link
So S-On and unlocked has the image of being unable to flash radios, and also have the bad rap that you can't flash kernels without going through fastboot......

Whats that? kernels flashed directly from recovery on S-ON Devices which are unlocked....(still trying to confirm this one as showp and faux over in one x still list it in the instructions of their kernels)...

Just an example people shouldn't worry too much about S-On devices....development always prevails.
would more than welcome any RD or ERD to chime in on this too and explain it a little more or dispute it if they see fit.

I agree, for now there's little benefit of having s-off. For me, I prefer not to have my device listed in htc's database as being unlocked.
More importantly however, once there are other updates such as radios, and other low level updates, the process to update will become more convoluted I think. You'll have to run relock (I think), then ruu, then unlock again, then restore.
With S-off, you simply flash the new radio or other update and it's a done deal.
Wouldn't s-off be necessary for switching between carriers? Since LTE wouldn't be available until 2013 for some markets why not save a few dollars.

your not switching b/w carriers with this device....even with S-Off....hardware is not there to work on the other freq, esp other LTE ones....

Are you sending your phone to HTC for warranty issues because "most" device "fixing" happens at the Sprint store level OR through Asurion and they don't hold root/HTC Dev unlock against you.
Saving your HTC warranty is practically a moot point..... but as always, to each, his own. I'm sure you won't see anyone knocking you for going your own road.
I don't waste money on insurance. Once I've had the phone a couple weeks and know it doesn't have any defects i don't care but in the first few weeks i do.
I didn't realize sprint didn't care about unlocking though. I am surprised people are always so concerned with unrooting when bringing their phones in for issues in that case.

I'm not talking about insurance, Sprint can't (shouldn't) turn you away for warranty issues of any kind (*within the warranty period). If you remove TEP, $8 and soon to be $11, which includes the ERP (Equipment Replacement Program) and the ESRP (Equipment Service & Replacement Program) you can still pay in store for a repair and avoid having to go through, what I'm sure would be, a painful warranty claim with HTC. I actually don't even think HTC would not honor their warranty if you use the Unlock and need a "hardware" warranty claim having absolutely nothing to do with rooting the device. Who knows though.... I do know, if you have no insurance or the ESRP at minimum, you'll be looking at a charge or the HTC direct route. I would recommend at least the $4 a month ESRP as we know how speakers and screens can be (at least in the past) the weakest links and need replacement.
As for the rooted devices being ok (this is very new and the worry before was pretty real), you can read an article and see the internal memo here http://www.androrev.com/2012/04/17/...-provide-customer-support-for-rooted-devices/. With that said, I'll never voluntarily take my rooted device in, they don't need know that info!
I never s on my device I just unroot lol o and take my sdcard out just in case but you have to be brave to not take your sd card out if you have personal things on there.

I'm wondering if anyone has been denied a return. Does sprint check the bootloader for *Tampered* or *Re-locked*?
I really want to start flashing roms but there is the possibility that I won't keep the phone.
Just relock your bootloader and run ruu. Then it will be acceptable. At least that's what I had to do after I showed up at the store all rooted and everything.

Well my power button was in the fritz the first day. Unfortunately the Regional HTC was at my local Sprint. Guess what he did? That's right. Booted into the bootloader. Why. I have no frikken clue. All the reps were amazed by what I did to the Dr ice so soon. Even another local sprint about 5 miles away found out (a friend of mine that works there told me) I was pretty pissed that I went in there to exchange it out and he booted Into that. O asked him for what reason, but he seriously had no clue what the f**k he was talking about. Honest to god. I'm mean, I'm sure he was just a sales Rep for HTC. But damn. When he seen that Tampered sign and when he also booted into TWRP, he was like "jeez, android in gone. Why did you do that?" LOL. So, o talked to one of my girl friends from Sprint, she's gonna hook me up. But I wad so shocked that he did that, all over me ha ing an issue with my power button. That was the first for me. Thank is god tha issue I had was due to a couple of apps .or allowing my phone to sleep correctly. Ahh well

I am tired of toggling airplane mode to get my data to turn back on. Yes I am on the latest everything 3.16 and have had this problem since launch day. Doesn't unlocking your bootloader void this warranty? I also don't have TEP so I think my odds of walking into Sprint and getting a new phone is very slim. Has anyone ever exchanged their phone before in my situation?

That's what many people think but isn't necessarily the case. When my gyroscope was being defective, I just re-locked my bootloader so that it actually said "RE-LOCKED" and Sprint was happy to exchange my phone for a new Evo LTE. I have also heard of this happening to many other people.
