Hello everyone here
I am planning to get the new old SGS3, but after looking in this forum, I am quite hesitating, because of samsung behaviour, I explain:
- Few months after getting my sgs2 I've heard of Brickbug and Exynos exploit, I got cold sweats each time hoping there will be a solution/fix and there was, I swore to never buy a Samsung phone before a quarantine period of at least one year, AND I WAS RIGHT ! This may look wrong but I'm not as rich as that... (Just letting time to tell me if it is a safe device and not an - accidental - crap) anyway, lets go to the questions:
- Is the sudden death fixed in the way the brickbug of sgs 2 or there still some risk to get my new old sgs 3 born dead ? I'm confused reading opposed reviews of the problem !
- Will flahing a 4.0.4 sgs 3 to 4.1.2 get the device operator locked back as the sgs 2 did, if yes could it be resolved with galaxsimunlock ?
(in all cases, I will probably use neatROM with a safe philz kernel)
- I a buy a SGS 3 with 4.1.2 jellybean out of the box, have I a chance that it will be enough new to have an eMMC chip which is not affected ? (I think the bug came with the first made eMMC chips, but I may be wong)
- If I get an SGS 3 with 4.0.4 android, should I flash it asap to safe 4.1.2 (XXELKC or above) as if it has fire and I must extinguish it ?
- Finnally, going through all this trouble, is the SGS 3 worth to get ?
Hi there friend,
first of all I strongly suggest you read the SDS thread:

It has all of your answers.
As for my personal opinion it's a great device I'm using it for almost a year now after coming from the nexus s

What opposed views? Everything in that thread is correct.
- Will flahing a 4.0.4 sgs 3 to 4.1.2 get the device operator locked back
Depends upon unlock method but NO if unlocked by network .

I don't know how about sudden death problem but Samsung fixed freeze problems with XXEMB1 firmware, so you can't say that Samsung forgot it's ex-flagship,because it's still very popular phone and it's still gets all latest updates and etc. So in general it's still worth to buy it.
The freeze problems are a result of the sds fix

I'll do, but while reading that thead, I felt like it is a very frequent problem so I stopped at the few first pages and looked elswhere
Regarding opposed views, I've found in at least two forums, that even after flashing a "secure" ROM, there was some devices that still present the symptoms of what I call "Alzheimer S III" : a degenerative evolution of memory that leads to death :silly:

I hope the Galaxsimunlock will do the job, because it will probably not be an operator unlock

I hope you are right, I'll read furthermore but the balance of opinion for me at the moment leans to get that phone, maybe on the week end
Did anyone got an SGS III out of the box with JB, and what was the version
By the way I've read somwhere that LL4 stock firmware "locks" the phone and stops any downgrading, makes triangleaway not woking anymore and removes abylity to reset flash counter, can anyone confirm that ?
Fyi, all s3's manufactured since December 2012 have upgraded firmware on the emmc. Typically imei starting 35 instead of 33 are good.
There are some reports of sds after 4.1.2 but I'm still yet to find one where it was 100% substantiated (meaning full stock, never rooted, confirmed sds).
We're still not certain that partial damage could occur before upgrade to fixed versions if android....

Hello people!
I have a Galaxy S2 from the carrier Three in Sweden. The latest firmware is a KF4 2.3.3 and I have a lot of problems with it... I have the typical battery drain because of Android OS, a lot of known games freeze frequently and the phone gets too warm at the up left corner. As I understood by reading the forums those issues could be solved with a better firmware right?
Well I asked Three about when they would introduce a new firmware and they told me that they are testing a new one now and during the middle of the month it would be available to us. He also mentioned that it would be a 2.3.5 version.
My big question is: Do I stay with Three or should I return the phone and cancel the 2 year subscription? I only have a couple of days left to decide... So far Three proved to be very slow in firmware updates and unreliable.
I didn't want to try to update with Odin because I don't want something to go wrong and if I have to return to a Three firmware and return it for any reason I will have to buy a jig right?
I also thought that maybe I can return it and wait for a Galaxy Prime..?
What do you think?

If you have flashed a custom rom or rooted the phone you will need to reset the rom counter to zero using USB jig .

Hi all,
So I just received an SGS3 from a colleague at work and it was completely dead. I can't even get into recovery or download modes. The incident happened when my friend had his alarm clock on, he stopped it, then went away and found the phone completely dead as it was already on charge. I tried charging the phone but it seems not responding to anything, and I see no lights whatsoever.
What could be the problem? I have another colleague at work that has an SGS3 as well, I'll replace batteries and see whether it's a battery problem or something else.

The thing is it was working just fine...it only happened after the alarm clock incident as I mentioned...strange :S Worse thing is that there's a lot of images and videos in the phone that hasn't been synced with dropbox, only some of them...i'm sure my friend will lose that
Sounds like your phone has fallen victim to S.D.S (sudden death syndrome). The eMMC firmware that shipped with the stock kernel seemed to cause uneven wear-leveling which meant the components failed far before their expected lifespan.
At this point, assuming you can't reach download mode, all you can do is send the phone to Samsung and get it repaired/replaced. Most Samsung repair centers seem to be aware of the issue.

JTAG won't be able to revive the phone since this is a hardware failure rather than just a brick caused by bad flashing or a damaged bootloader. The entire motherboard of the phone will have to be replaced by the service center, which will be free.
Alright thanks for the Info guys...as long as it's still on warranty then my friend won't have to worry

Just as a side-note, is your friend aware that the latest 4.1.2 builds coming from Samsung include a modified eMMC firmware in the kernel which supposedly remedies this problem. I'm personally running the XXELLA build which includes the fix. He may want to check out flashing one of these builds to prevent it happening again, if the phone doesn't come back with the latest firmware already

Well I don't think that my friend is aware of that as he's not that experienced..I'm more experienced than he is though since I've been into Android since the first galaxy We reside in Dubai and our CSC code is XSG...not sure if our service centers have the fixed 4.1.2 builds yet for the Middle East version. Do the service centers have different builds than those in Sammobile?
Anyways I just hope he gets a replacement unit rather than having the motherboard changed.

I live in New Zealand and we've only just received 4.1.1 from our carrier, the updates are horrendously slow. I flashed the unbranded United Kingdom stock ROM instead as they tend to get the updates straight from Samsung very quickly. It works just fine and it's all official.
Guess i'll just flash it for him via odin if his phone didn't come with the modified emmc 4.1.2
Btw, I'm having trouble replying to posts via my phone and the xda app I keep getting Request function reply topic does not exist !!!!!!
Man that was quick....the phone has been repaired in 1 day...they said it might take 3 business days...motherboard has been replaced.
Now what should I do to prevent this emmc from happening again? ?

sorry, i cannot understand you.. whan do you mean brick bug? (sorry, i am first time here, yes i am noob)
Brickbug is a hardware problem on a lot of I9100 phones the kernels for the 4.0.4 firmware wipe the data during a format or factory reset in a way that can cause the phone to be bricked. Having safe kernel prevents the problem

My S3 was working fine in my pocket, plenty of battery, went to use it and it was completely dead. I've removed battery, SIM, and SD and left for a while, given a good charge, but still no sign of life whatsoever. Tried another battery also.
I've even removed the back (10 screws inside battery cover) and blown with some compressed air, but no different.
Any ideas? It is under 12 months old so Orange UK will take it for repair, but I believe the first thing they do is wipe all data. I've got a lot of app data (non Google sync) that I'd rather not lose.
Any suggestions (before I send it off)?
you said you gave it a good charge - so does it react to charging? can you access download mode? have you tried a different battery? what ROM did you have before this happened?
Could be sds, in which case data is gone. By the way, removing screws invalidates warranty so if they notice, you may cone unstuck

Doesn't react to charging at all. Totally lifeless, so no Download mode possible. I tried a mate's battery from his S3, no good. I was running cyanogen, from about 6 months ago, I forget which version.
I appreciate that both the ROM and screw removal would invalidate the warranty, but I guess they won't know about the ROM if either they can't boot it, or do a full wipe when they get the phone - I'm guessing they use a very high intensity magnetic field or something? And I've been pretty careful with the screws!

No they can't tell about the ROM. They'll be replacing the internal memory completely and throwing yours away. There's nothing retrievable on it. No come backs.

The reason was that a certain app (important for me) wasn't updated (due to legal action) to run on the newer Android version (JB).

it is definitely the cause. the kernel didn't have the SDS fix, check the General section

A eMMC chip type:VTU00M with firmware-rev:0xf1 get corrupt with older 4.0 and 4.1.1 kernels, and instead freezes with early 4.1.2 JB kernels. (if i remember correctly)

Actually, it was the camera at fault.
Fixed under warranty by EE/Orange, with no questions about my having opened the back up or the Custom ROM, probably as they would have been unable to easily tell due to it being totally dead

Hello everyone!
This is my first post here. I would like to start wishing a happy new year to you and your family!
I'm from Brazil and I'm having a BIG problem with my S III I9300.
It appears to have the SDS. I used the EMMC check and it returned VTU00M, revision 0xf1
But is a read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091045 with my non-rooted 4.1.2 official release (stock) I was supposed to be safe. But not!
About a week ago my cell phone started freezing 50+ times a day. I can't use it for more than 3 minutes. Actually is impossible to use it! As it is impossible to upgrade the firmware (I can't complete the download without a reboot)
I just realized that the phone unfreeze itself after 5-25 minutes.
I have absolute no idea on what to do. Am I supposed to reset to factory settings? Will it possible solve it?
Has it the SDS or not?
Thanks a lot! Your help is EXTREMELY welcome!
Freezes are the fix for SDS happening. Your phone probably has bad nand blocks, leave the phone until it recovers from each freeze.
Only solution is a new motherboard, warranty replacement.

The warranty expired on past black friday (about a month ago), since I bought it on 2012 event and here in Brazil it has 1 year warranty. So the only "solution" is to wait for the unfreeze?

It might be worth trying a factory reset as well, if the update helped then it might not be bad blocks.
In many countries Samsung offer 24 months limited warranty .
Plus look at sale of goods re the vendor as its a known fault there from day one .
