[Q] Black Death for Samsung Galaxy s2 -i9100 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody,
So this is my story, today i tried to put officialSpanishJB rom to my SGS2. i tryied, but i could make it.
I backuped the old firmware on sd, and wiped the rom. Now, the phone doesn't starts. it is in "black death" mode..
no reacting to anything.. Any suggestions?
(powerbutton+vol down+homebutton, doesn't works) any idea please?
Also, i tried to reset to factory Frimware from KIES, but i couldn't because the phone is off, and it cannot start the procedure to reset.

Put the charger on
Wait for few minutes,
power on
If you were on 4.0.4 :crying:

Let me guess...you were on 4.0.4.

Yes, i was on stock 4.0.4.
Now? Any suggestions?

This may sound stupid, but with the brick bug in 4.04, why would anyone use it without a safe kernel?

sorry, i cannot understand you.. whan do you mean brick bug? (sorry, i am first time here, yes i am noob)

Brickbug is a hardware problem on a lot of I9100 phones the kernels for the 4.0.4 firmware wipe the data during a format or factory reset in a way that can cause the phone to be bricked. Having safe kernel prevents the problem

The best option is to claim your warranty. It'll be done in a less messy way, and you won't need to worry about things going wrong.

you know what? i saw some forums, with the same prob, and the is one single problem..
BURNED MOTHERBOARD
i dont know how.. i dont know why, but i think mu motherboard is dead,
Also the most funny thing is that i bought the phone at 12 January of 2011!! it means that 2 years of warranty have gone.
best thing, do you think?

How unfortunate. Well, I guess you should start searching and reading for solutions. There was a link posted on one of the previous pages which has a solution. Read it carefully a few times until you understand it completely.
Ask if you don't. Don't do anything blindly.

this cannot help me, because my phone doesnt even starts. it does completely nothing.
i really loved my phone, if i could re-live my motherboard it would be the best...

Then I guess you have to replace the motherboard... Or sell this phone on ebay...

You are right, i made a mistake on date, it is 1st of December of 2011, not 12th of January. lol...
My mistake.. One more question, the fact that i rooted the phone, doesn't means that i loose the warranty?
and i'm gonna tell them? i tried to put another OS, and it failed?

just say something like "I was updating vua kies and all of a sudden it just went off".

[ISSUE] I9300 not Waking up

Hi Guys,
In the past few days ive noticed that if i dont check my phone regularly it will simply refuse to wake up (screen on). I know the phone is still working as the LightFlow settings still use the notification light when needed. I have also had situations where the phone wakes up but theres no touch functions, but locking and waking up again fixes that in 1 try. Has anyone else had this issue or am I going to have to send the phone back?
Thanks
Michael
P.S. The phone is not rooted and hasnt been updated since out the box. Any suggestions to root the phone to fix this will be ignored.
Uninstall LightFlow it has been known to cause this issue.
That is all we can suggest unless your willing to root.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had my HTC Desire rooted and this has put me off rooting my phone at the moment, but I was waiting for the Jelly Bean AOSP anyway.
Not trying to take this too far off topic, but what do you have against root? All root effectively is is an admin mode, you don't have to flash a custom rom.

I dont have anything against root. Its just that when I have a problem with my phone and people suggest to root it, if it doesnt work im kinda screwed over with warranty etc.
Unfortunatly removing Lightflow didnt help and its still happening

It's quite easy to revert back to Stock for warranty repairs.

Wont they reject it if its rooted? This would be the first phone ive sent for repairs. My HTC Desire never faulted in 2 years but this is starting to annoy me just a month and a half into my contract.

Yes, but u can use "triangle away" (by chainfire) to reset flash counter(found in download mode) and flash a stock rom with Odin and back is your warranty.
root...warranty...bla bla bla...why want to return just because of that? do u know that samsung software engineers sucks? i bought nexus, and i just use it for 1 week. want to know why? because it's so boring. the phone so perfect. no problem at all. nothing to tweak, nothing to fix, nothing to improve. i switch back to Samsung Galaxy because of this (before this use SGS1, now SGS3). so, if you have problem like THIS, change your kernel, or just sit and wait for update to fix it. samsung monitoring it (SLOWWWWWLYYY)

Over here afaik at least within the first period the seller has to actually prove you caused the damage to refuse the claim.
Having a rooted device will not stand as having caused hardware-damage.
So far I've yet to hear about a single case of warranty being refused in this country due to software modifications.
If it was as simple as putting a "Waranty void if removed" sticker on stuff actually having any meaning, that would be the end of democraty. Fortunately the law tells otherwise and manufacturers have to obey it (or buy their own law... at least in the USA that seems to work)
However it most certainly will make repairs far easier if the device is stock since they cannot even try to blame you for incorrect configurations or bad flashes.

Thanks for the help guys, Im on holiday at the moment so I'll see if theres a Kernal update when I get home. If not I'll check on the Jelly Bean (or something popular thats been out for a long time) rom stability and root for that. If nothing helps from those ill use the Triangle program to get rid of the root history and send it back for repairs.
EDIT: My Kernal is from May 13th. Surprised I havent had an update come thorugh yet. There isnt even a check for update button in my "About Phone"

Are you by any chance on Orange UK or Three UK? (Can't remember which of both was it)
They've removed that button in their bloatware-edition of the Samsung ROM - probably to prevent users from updating over 3G connectivity.

Just flash any Samsung- or aftermarket-ROM (I recommend CM9 or the CM9-based ParanoidAndroid) of your choice and you're good.
DXLF3 modem should work well according to what I've heard.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy s2 SGH-i777 motherboard

Hi guys,
I was installing one of the custom ROMs and i dont know what happened after that... the phone is not booting up... not even in Download / Recovery Mode. i tried
1. Removing battery & putting it back in
2. USB Jig method
3. Riff-box JTag...
Nothing helped. Also, the phone heats up unusually when i insert the battery... Finally after lot of research i found that i777 had eMMC issue & probably it is corrupt, so the only option left for me is to replace the Motherboard. I currently stay in India & there are no shops here which can provide me this phone's motherboard.
Almost, for 2 months i hav been taking this phone to different technicians, but no one could repair it. Now i dont know what to do. Please Advise me.... What can i do to bring this phone to life?
What rom were u trying to install? What rom were u coming from? Please make sure u have an i777 and not an i9100 or i727 by taking out the battery and looking underneath. It will show the model number. The emmc brick bug refers to the ics stock kernel having the "mmc cap erase" turned on or something to that affect. It damages the emmc chip doing a factory reset. So unless u have the stock ics kernel that shouldn't be a problem for u

Same is the case with me. Motherboard is damaged of my sgh i777. I also looked around a lot to get it repaired. The original Motherboard would cost around 10,000 INR. I found a technician who would fix it with a used motherboard @ cost of 4,000 INR

Help, suddenly completely dead SGS3 !!

Hi all,
So I just received an SGS3 from a colleague at work and it was completely dead. I can't even get into recovery or download modes. The incident happened when my friend had his alarm clock on, he stopped it, then went away and found the phone completely dead as it was already on charge. I tried charging the phone but it seems not responding to anything, and I see no lights whatsoever.
What could be the problem? I have another colleague at work that has an SGS3 as well, I'll replace batteries and see whether it's a battery problem or something else.

The thing is it was working just fine...it only happened after the alarm clock incident as I mentioned...strange :S Worse thing is that there's a lot of images and videos in the phone that hasn't been synced with dropbox, only some of them...i'm sure my friend will lose that
Sounds like your phone has fallen victim to S.D.S (sudden death syndrome). The eMMC firmware that shipped with the stock kernel seemed to cause uneven wear-leveling which meant the components failed far before their expected lifespan.
At this point, assuming you can't reach download mode, all you can do is send the phone to Samsung and get it repaired/replaced. Most Samsung repair centers seem to be aware of the issue.

JTAG won't be able to revive the phone since this is a hardware failure rather than just a brick caused by bad flashing or a damaged bootloader. The entire motherboard of the phone will have to be replaced by the service center, which will be free.
Alright thanks for the Info guys...as long as it's still on warranty then my friend won't have to worry

Just as a side-note, is your friend aware that the latest 4.1.2 builds coming from Samsung include a modified eMMC firmware in the kernel which supposedly remedies this problem. I'm personally running the XXELLA build which includes the fix. He may want to check out flashing one of these builds to prevent it happening again, if the phone doesn't come back with the latest firmware already

Well I don't think that my friend is aware of that as he's not that experienced..I'm more experienced than he is though since I've been into Android since the first galaxy We reside in Dubai and our CSC code is XSG...not sure if our service centers have the fixed 4.1.2 builds yet for the Middle East version. Do the service centers have different builds than those in Sammobile?
Anyways I just hope he gets a replacement unit rather than having the motherboard changed.

I live in New Zealand and we've only just received 4.1.1 from our carrier, the updates are horrendously slow. I flashed the unbranded United Kingdom stock ROM instead as they tend to get the updates straight from Samsung very quickly. It works just fine and it's all official.
Guess i'll just flash it for him via odin if his phone didn't come with the modified emmc 4.1.2
Btw, I'm having trouble replying to posts via my phone and the xda app I keep getting Request function reply topic does not exist !!!!!!
Man that was quick....the phone has been repaired in 1 day...they said it might take 3 business days...motherboard has been replaced.
Now what should I do to prevent this emmc from happening again? ?

[Q] Few questions regarding SGS 3 I9300

Hello everyone here
I am planning to get the new old SGS3, but after looking in this forum, I am quite hesitating, because of samsung behaviour, I explain:
- Few months after getting my sgs2 I've heard of Brickbug and Exynos exploit, I got cold sweats each time hoping there will be a solution/fix and there was, I swore to never buy a Samsung phone before a quarantine period of at least one year, AND I WAS RIGHT ! This may look wrong but I'm not as rich as that... (Just letting time to tell me if it is a safe device and not an - accidental - crap) anyway, lets go to the questions:
- Is the sudden death fixed in the way the brickbug of sgs 2 or there still some risk to get my new old sgs 3 born dead ? I'm confused reading opposed reviews of the problem !
- Will flahing a 4.0.4 sgs 3 to 4.1.2 get the device operator locked back as the sgs 2 did, if yes could it be resolved with galaxsimunlock ?
(in all cases, I will probably use neatROM with a safe philz kernel)
- I a buy a SGS 3 with 4.1.2 jellybean out of the box, have I a chance that it will be enough new to have an eMMC chip which is not affected ? (I think the bug came with the first made eMMC chips, but I may be wong)
- If I get an SGS 3 with 4.0.4 android, should I flash it asap to safe 4.1.2 (XXELKC or above) as if it has fire and I must extinguish it ?
- Finnally, going through all this trouble, is the SGS 3 worth to get ?
Hi there friend,
first of all I strongly suggest you read the SDS thread:

Depends upon unlock method but NO if unlocked by network .

I don't know how about sudden death problem but Samsung fixed freeze problems with XXEMB1 firmware, so you can't say that Samsung forgot it's ex-flagship,because it's still very popular phone and it's still gets all latest updates and etc. So in general it's still worth to buy it.
The freeze problems are a result of the sds fix

I'll do, but while reading that thead, I felt like it is a very frequent problem so I stopped at the few first pages and looked elswhere
Regarding opposed views, I've found in at least two forums, that even after flashing a "secure" ROM, there was some devices that still present the symptoms of what I call "Alzheimer S III" : a degenerative evolution of memory that leads to death :silly:

I hope you are right, I'll read furthermore but the balance of opinion for me at the moment leans to get that phone, maybe on the week end
Did anyone got an SGS III out of the box with JB, and what was the version
By the way I've read somwhere that LL4 stock firmware "locks" the phone and stops any downgrading, makes triangleaway not woking anymore and removes abylity to reset flash counter, can anyone confirm that ?
Fyi, all s3's manufactured since December 2012 have upgraded firmware on the emmc. Typically imei starting 35 instead of 33 are good.
There are some reports of sds after 4.1.2 but I'm still yet to find one where it was 100% substantiated (meaning full stock, never rooted, confirmed sds).
We're still not certain that partial damage could occur before upgrade to fixed versions if android....

[Q] HELP my Galaxy S3 is dead!

I successfully rooted my phone and successfully installed the volume hack package and the battery fox for 4.0.4 (both I found how to do on this website) and for a good few months my phone was working fine on Android 4.0.4
Then one day I was replying to a text message the phone just switched itself off and wouldn't get past the boot screen where it comes up with the Samsung Galaxy S III logo. With no one offering me any help when I've posted about this problem on this site and various others and after searching google for days to find a fix as I am a Mac user (Heimdall) with no access to a PC (Odin) at all, I took it to a local phone shop, explained the problem to see if they'd be able to fix it. They had it for 2 weeks and when I went to collect they told me that the phone ended up having to be sent to Samsung and there was nothing they could do with it. (I figured that anyway as it was rooted). Now I have got the phone back, it's in a worse state than what it was when I took it into the shop. When I try to power on the phone, nothing happens at all, it's just a black screen. I assumed the battery might be flat so when I went to plug in the charger, the battery symbol shows but it's got a circle in the middle of it it as though it's loading but nothing else happens.
Does this mean my phone is completely dead for good with no fix at all?
If it's bin fodder I may as well sell it for parts and try to get a bit of money back out of it as I bought this SIM free and it cost me quite a bit back when it first came out.
I'd appreciate it if I didn't get a load of snotty remarks as though I'm the thickest person on earth! I am fairly new to all this and it's all I ever seem to experience from this website. Please only reply if you have a genuine answer to my problem.
Thank you.
:good:

Thank you for that, I'd never heard the term SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) before. I didn't even know it existed! But anyway since you mentioned that, I did a search, found this link http://www.freesamsungrepairs.com and I called the number, they reckon they can fix it free of charge providing there's no physical or water damage (which there isn't) and all I have to pay is the postage fees! Sounds like there maybe some hope after all!
