I am currently using a Galaxy Note from Rogers. I have root, on the OTA ICS ROM. I have CWM installed, and that is all I know. I would like to give JB a go. From what I understand, I need to install TWRP. Is that correct? I've heard it is better, and for the amount I actually use CWM, I doubt I will miss having it. If I install the KIES JB update, will I lose my root access, and my CWM? I haven't played with much in the way of ROM swapping, except on mt Toshiba Thrive, but I assume it is pretty much the same thing. I am looking for a quick run down of the steps I need to take to get to JB. All the info I have found and read, is a wee bit confusing, because there is so much of it lol. Also I did use ODIN to achieve root access on the ICS ROM, so I am a bit familiar with it, as it is pretty straight forward. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Shad.
If you use kies you will lose root access. You can update your recovery now and install a JB rom from the development section if you want. Or to update to latest stock firmware (from any rom even rooted)
1. Open http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
2. Click Download for windows
3. Install Kies
4. Open Kies
5. Write down serial number of phone device (it's under battery)
6. Plug in phone to PC and power up phone while HOLDING volume down
7. Once you see the download screen on phone press volume up
8. On PC in Kies click "tools - Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
9. Type in SGH-I717 (all caps)
10. Type in serial number
11. Follow directions
12. Once phone reboots you will have the latest OFFICIAL firmware (JB 4.1.2 as of 6-1-2013)
13. Perform a factory data reset before proceeding (it helps it run smoother)
14. Type in google info and enjoy!
To root the stock 4.1.2 rom
1. Use Odin 1.85 in Admin Mode for Windows users.
2. Install TWRP 2.5 via PDA settings.
3. Reboot phone into Recovery.
4. Install SuperSU via the Zip.
5. Reboot phone and viola. SuperSU is there and works.
Download TWRP recovery the Odin Method here:
http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/96
Download SuperSU located here:
http://download.chainfire.eu/204
Your now on the latest software for the i717 and rooted.
To remove bloat or unwanted stock apps my favorite app is Titanium backup pro. I always "feeze" an app, then use the phone for a day or 2 to see if anything doesn't work properly. If it does unfreeze it to fix. Stay away from freezing system settings. There are very few you can get away with freezing. Some of the apps I froze you may or may not want to depending on how you use your phone. Like for example I don't use allshare or quickpic but you might. I'll try to list what I removed thru titanium backup. But I might of uninstalled some and cant remember. I'll add to the list as I remember, freeze more, or if someone add's in future posts.

I was amazed at how much more bloat my "new" JB Note seems to have than my ICS Note (both rooted but stock); your list reminds me of that. I think I disabled at least thirty apps on the new one.
It appears that I can't get it thru kies. I wonder if it has been pulled by Rogers...
I need to find a decent ROM then. Something with no problems with battery drain, and all the options of the phone, like the s-pen, work. I guess I have a bunch of reading to do. I've been getting mixed reviews about which recovery to use too. I have been using CWM for ages on all my devices, but have heard great things about TWRP. What makes TWRP better than CWM, can someone elaborate for me?

Then install it using Odin and follow the above instructions to reroot.
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/213010140/75bf7e2/I717RUXMD1_I717RRWCMD1_RWC.zip.html
TWRP is more modern with a few added features. I believe backups are quicker too. I still run the latest version of CWM 6.0.3.1 myself and have no issues.

I have been rooted for a few months now on my note i717 att version. I enjoy the customizable features, but i dislike the loss in the s-pen features. I just found out today that att has released the files for the att note i717 users to update to the jelly bean series. The main question is, if i unroot my phone by using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27075837. Will i get my s-pen features and gestures back along with the ability to use the kies software again?

I like you love my s-pen features! What customizable features other than s-pen do you like? The new JB 4.1.2 software release is nice, but if you've played with other custom roms on here you might miss some other features. If you want to get the new official release it's easier than you think! You can be rooted and perform this task to update. I recommend backing up everything and wiping your internal memory clean before this process.
On your PC
1. Open Kies
2. Update Kies if necessary
3. Boot phone into Download Mode
4. In kies select Tools>Firmware upgrade and initialization
5. Input Device SGH-I717 (YES CAPS MATTER)
6. Input Serial from under Battery EXACTLY as it is seen
7. Follow prompts to install via Kies.
8. About 10 minutes later it will be done
9. Use Odin 1.85 in Admin Mode for Windows users.
10. Install TWRP 2.5 via PDA settings.
11. Reboot phone into Recovery.
12. Install SuperSU via this Zip.
13. Reboot phone and Presto! SuperSU is there and works.
You're now on the latest official release and rooted! Remove bloat and enjoy your touchwiz, and S-pen features!!! Try not to cry over any missing ones from custom roms.
Hi guys
I have a samsung galaxy note SGH-i717 that I installed CyanogenMod rom few months ago.
But, I suffering some of failures like suddenly turn off automatically and sometimes touch dosen't work.
That is why I'd like to restore my note to pure version of AT&T, then I want to get the official Jelly bean from AT&T.
I know how to uninstall CyanogenMod rom and retrive to my note to initialization.
(just install pure version of ICS to my note with odin right??)
but I don't know which rom should I download and install to my note. I mean which one is the pure rom that I have to install to get the official
Jelly bean thru Kies after make it to pure ICS.
Please let me know about the correct PURE ROM that possibly update to the official Jelly bean thru AT&T.
Thank you for your help in advance.
You can just install the AT&T JB update with ODIN. This will completely set your phone to full stock (stock android 4.1.2, stock recovery, stock modem), 100% stock. Back up anything (to your PC) you don't want to lose in case the process wipes everything out like pictures, apps, etc. You can find the ODIN file in several different threads. The SUPER EVERYTHING thread located in" Stickies" of the General section would be a good place to look.
Now, if you just want the stock rom only, there's more than one thread you can grab that at in the Development section which you can just flash like any other ROM.

Put the phone in download mode, open Kies, plug phone into usb, in Kies select tools, firmware upgrade and initialization. Have your phones serial number handy (Can be found under the battery). Enter model number using all caps (SGH-I717) and follow the prompts. This will put the phone back to stock 4.1.2. You will loose root and recovery, but will be back to complete stock. By far the easiest, safest method to completely wipe and start over.

I'm confused that which one is pure rom for me...
I thought,
1. download pure rom (ICS? or JB?) for i717
2. launch the rom with Odin
3. after initialization then, upgrade to the latest version of JB from ATT
Is this right that I thought?

Hello everyone,
I heard that if I root the device, I can remove all the junks added by AT&T and Google: can I just have the bare-bone Android OS on the device in that case?
If so, would you mind indicating me what the best rooting procedure is and where I can look-up the steps?
Thanks you!
You could just disable the at&t and Samsung stuff in the application manager settings. You can also root your phone and flash an aosp based ROM. Although some phones don't like aosp very much

I'm not familiar with the Android Open Source Project so I'd really like to have the opinion of someone who did root the device and who's happy with the result.
You don't have to root the phone to flash a debloared rom.

Thanks but I'm still waiting for the URL of a page that would clearly explain how to do that for a newbie like me (just rooted a Nook a long while ago...).

I am a fan of the pure stock AT&T rom frankly because everything works! Sure I'm missing some frills that version 4.2.2 has but oh well. I updated my phone with kies to ver 4.1.2, installed twrp recovery, rooted, and removed a lot of bloat. I'm pretty happy with my device now. I'll list below the steps I did.

Yes just skip to the root part with odin.
The other thing you could do is do a factory reset. I had a terrible experience with JB at first and had to factory reset twice. Now my phone is snappy (really snappy) and I have the stock ROM and I am rooted. There are multiple reports that flashing the update does not get rid of all the bits and pieces from prior ROMs, which may have the effect of slowing down performance. This I got directly from Samsung (although I paraphrased it here).
I suggest just reading the super everything thread about 10 times if you are new to rooting/flashing. It is in the general forum. I was a complete n00b about 2 months ago, now I flash roms because I'm bored while driving in my car My personal opinion is to install twrp/flash supersu, then make a backup. Once you have that backup, go crazy and flash away. Just make sure you factory reset before flashing new roms. Don't do advanced, and if you do, don't wipe emmc or sdcard. emmc hosts that nice backup you just made. Even with the bugs in most of the roms, they are 100x better than stock, and much faster. Even after taking all the AT&T and Samsung garbage out, it is still slower than a custom rom. I just tried stock again 2 days ago, wanted to give 4.1.2 a twirl, and it was much slower than the revolt or carbon I normally run. Have fun and good luck!

You don't have to unlock a phone to flash a rom. You unlock only if you need to use a different carrier's sim card.
You don't have to root a phone to flash a rom. You only root if you need to access the main file system ( access the root directory ).
You don't have to flash a recovery to flash a rom. You can flash a rom using Samsung software Odin3, or Samsung Kies, or a linux version Heimdall. You flash a custom recovery to make backups and have a convenient method to flash roms and do maintenence.
But to uninstall the ATT/Samsung apps, rooting is the path. Right?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Yes then install Titanium Backup app. Freeze the apps you want to get rid of to be sure they aren't essential, then afer a fewbdays delete them.
But you can just flash the stock debloated JB rom.

I have searched multiple threads and sites, however, I still haven't found someone that's had a similar problem to mine, so here it goes.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300 and the Android version is currently 4.0.4 (More information about my device in the screenshots below)
I've been trying to update it to the latest Android version (Jellybean 4.3 I believe, since Kit Kat 4.4 is not yet available for Samsung Galaxy devices yet). However, whenever I try to do a Software update, it tells me "No update available". Someone suggested that I install the updates through Kies, and I did install Kies on my Mac (OS X 10.9.1), but it won't connect to my phone--as in, it will say "Connecting" for hours without ever connecting to the phone or it will say "Connecting" for a few seconds then tell me to "Please connect a device". I've checked with my phone, and it says "Connected as a media device" with the USB symbol to the left of it. I have also tried to unplug my USB cord, enable USB debugging mode, and plug it back into my Mac to no avail.
The phone is fairly new, I got it a couple of weeks ago from China. I believe that it is rooted since it had to be unlocked to work with US carriers (I'm on T-Mobile network), but at the same time I'm also not quite sure. The phone status says 'Modified', if that helps at all.
SuperSU is installed on my phone (I wasn't the one who installed it), but when I try to access the application, it tells me "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!
CWM Manager is also installed (v3.60), but it says "This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-Root v5.0 or newer. It apepars you are running a different kernel. Various features have been disabled." I don't know what CF-Root is, and I don't think that it's installed on my phone either, since I can't find it in my Application Manager.
I installed an application called RootValidator from the Google Play store, and when I run it, it tells me "No, but you might have root as our request was denied. Did you deny root access? While you don't have a busy box, it is not required to root a device, some apps just need it." (See attachments for more information)
So now my questions are...:
Is my phone actually rooted or not? If it is, how can I grant or deny root access? (I want to download TitaniumBackup, but it requires root access, which I don't know how to give)
Since Kies isn't reading/connecting my device, how can I get Kies to connect to my phone?
And since my phone keeps on telling me "No update available" whenever I try to do a software update, I'm going to assume that I have to update my phone's firmware by using Kies. And if my phone is rooted/unrooted, but I can't connect to Kies, how can I update my Android 4.0.4 to the latest Jellybean 4.3 version?
Thank you for any help you can give!

First of all, I suggest you reboot your device into download mode:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1tdznfLJsyY
And check if the device info actually indicates its i9300 (just to be sure that you didn't fall into quality fake)
Second, (and I suggesting using a pc for following procedures) try to reinstall kies (make sure you aren't using kies3) and make sure your device is recognized as i9300. Most chances that you won't be able to update with kies, but samsung drivers are needed.
Third- you've got 2 options:
1- flash sumsung's newest official rom fron sammobile using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
2- root your device using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3#root
Than install this updated recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953
If all goes well, you'll be able to install custom roms using the recovey. Like this awesome one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060403
Ps- if something isn't clear enough, feel free to ask.

Thanks a lot for your help!
So for the first step, I rebooted it into the Download mode following the video tutorial you linked to, and it told me:
ODIN MODE
Product Name: GT-I9300
Custom Binary Download: Yes (4 counts)
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
So I'm assuming that yes, my Samsung is an official I9300 device?
For the second step, does it matter which version of Kies I install as long as it's not Kies 3?
For the first option in the third step, will flashing the newest official ROM still allow me to keep on the T-Mobile network? (Since I originally had this device bought in China then had someone else unlock it so that it could be compatible with the US network carriers)
Thanks again!

1-It seems so (but if you want to do a double-check: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z and see if it says 'Exynos 4412' in the SOC tab, and 'GT-I9300' + '832MB of ram' in System.
2- Get the lastest available.
3- Then I suggest using the second method. If you already have working CWM recovery, than you should be able to install Philz recovery directly as a zip file in your current recovery.
After updating the recovery (and backing-up all important data!), download NeatRom zip file, and copy it into device's SD.
Reboot to recovery mode, do "wipe to install new rom" + "wipe cache partition" + "advance->wipe delvik cache", and than-
"instal zip from sd/sd1 (depends on where you saved the zip of neatRom) and follow installation instructions.
after the flashing is done, check if the sim works as it should, if not- than you'll have 2 option to unlock it (which costs about 5-7$):

There are some free turorials online, but they seem to be for older versions / questioned reliability...
A word of caution- moving to 4.3 will change the EFS partition to V2, which by itself isn't a problem (but causing a real headache for those trying to downgrade).
This tutorial gets your MetroPCS Grand Prime (model SM-G530T1) root, a deodexed and bloatware-free TouchWiz, 'fairly stock' ROM, and Xposed Framework. This method will likely work on the T-Mobile variant because much of this is actually intended for that variant... but no guarantees. If you do, indeed, attempt this with a non-MetroPCS variant, please let me know your model number and if it works or not so i can add it to the compatibility/incompatibility list.
Known compatible variants:
SM-G530T1 - MetroPCS
This tutorial comes with no guarantees or warranties. I am not responsible if you brick your device or for any damage caused by following this tutorial. You can most likely recover any problems you find along the way by simply flashing back to Stock with Odin, but I can't guarantee that you will be able to. This is true of basically everything on XDA, so no surprises here.
I estimate the entire process taking less than a half hour, assuming that everything goes as expected, and that you don't need to flash back to stock first.
There is one caveat... the TrapKernel method fully roots the device, but it trips Knox. If you don't want to trip Knox, don't use this method. As an alternative, if all you want is some minor root functionality, KingRoot will give you SOME root functionality, but not enough to install Xposed, or to do many things that a true root gives you. KingRoot can be found here: SITE / DOWNLOAD
At any time, even if you brick your device, you can probably always flash back to Stock. Here is the Stock MetroPCS SM-G530TI 5.1.1 ROM: THREAD / DOWNLOAD
Alright... without further adieu, here are the files you will need:
Odin SITE / DOWNLOAD
ShinySide's TrapKernel for SM-G530T THREAD / DOWNLOAD
DUHAsianSKILLZ's deodexed and bloatware-free ROM for SM-G530T: THREAD / DOWNLOAD
Chainfire's FlashFire SITE / DOWNLOAD

Got all the files you need? Here are the steps:
1. On your phone, boot to Download Mode by booting your device while holding down the Down Volume and Home Button, then hitting Volume Up. Connect it to your PC. If your PC doesn't recognize the phone, you need to install drivers. There are lots of threads out there with tutorials on how to do that. This tutorial assumes you already have the drivers.
2. On your PC, open Odin, Click the "AP" button, Select the file: TrapKernel_G530T_AOF8_Root.tar.md5. Flash it. Let the phone boot normally. If it doesn't load after a few minutes, pull the battery and reboot. If it continues to get stuck on boot, it probably failed. Flash back to Stock and try again.
3. On your phone, once it fully boots up, download Chainfire's SuperSU from the Play Store. You'll need it in order to authorize the root app in the next step.
4. On your phone, download FlashFire from the Play Store at the link above, or if you have the APK, install it. Open FlashFire and authorize SU permissions. Hit the + button, then Wipe. Check System data, 3rd party apps, Dalvik cache, Cache partition, and Cache partition format, then click the Checkmark on the top-right to confirm. Now hit the + button again, then Flash Zip or OTA. Select GwizRomSMG530T-V1.1.zip, then click the Checkmark on the top-right. Now click Flash. The screen will go off during this step... DON'T WORRY. It will take about 10 minutes total to boot for the 'first time'. This ROM basically removes Knox, retains root, and frees up a lot of resources that Samsung was using for useless bloatware. Even if you stopped at this step, your phone will be MUCH better off than with a purely Stock ROM on it. I noticed a HUGE performance improvement after installing this ROM.
5. On your phone, install XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk.
6. On your phone, open FlashFire. Tap the + button, then Flash Zip or OTA. Find TWRP_2870_Samsung_SM_G530H.zip and flash it. This one takes a little while to load, so be patient. I would say, if you're at the 10 minute mark after tapping Flash, it probably failed so pull the battery and reboot. If it continues to happen, you'll likely need to flash Stock and start over completely.
7. The phone will boot back to your home screen. Once it does, restart it and go into Recovery Mode by booting the phone while holding the Volume Up and Home buttons.
8. Once in Recovery, tap Install. Find and choose the file xposed-v86.0-sdk22-arm-custom-build-by-wanam.zip and swipe the slider at the bottom to Install Xposed.
9. Once it finishes flashing and boots back up, you're good to go. Full Root. Bloatware-Free. Really fast. With Xposed.
10. One last thing, I would install an app like NoBloat or something to disable or delete the app com.tmobile.pr.adapt. It doesn't like that you rooted your device and will start acting up. The reason a T-Mobile app is there is because the bloat-free ROM you installed in step 4 above is based on a T-Mobile Stock ROM, not MetroPCS. You don't need it. It will ask for root permissions all the time, use cell data, and deplete your battery. Just disable it if you are not comfortable fully deleting it. I would also look into disabling/deleting some of the other apps like some of the Samsung stuff, but you'll have to research what is safe to remove. I know the com.tmobile.pr.adapt app is pointless and a data/battery hog.
Well then thanks for putting this together. Now everything is in one spot. Well done.

after flashing "TrapKernel_G530T_AOF8_Root.tar.md5" Phone reboots fine, but wifi doesn't works anymore, I repaired it with SmartSwitch, reloading the firmware back to Stock.

GwizRomSMG530T-V1.1.zip will not install, there are 2 options to check on the flash screen, should I leave those blank or check them?
