Hello everyone,
I heard that if I root the device, I can remove all the junks added by AT&T and Google: can I just have the bare-bone Android OS on the device in that case?
If so, would you mind indicating me what the best rooting procedure is and where I can look-up the steps?
Thanks you!
You could just disable the at&t and Samsung stuff in the application manager settings. You can also root your phone and flash an aosp based ROM. Although some phones don't like aosp very much

I'm not familiar with the Android Open Source Project so I'd really like to have the opinion of someone who did root the device and who's happy with the result.
You don't have to root the phone to flash a debloared rom.
Don't quote, reply. If you quote, edit.
Thanks but I'm still waiting for the URL of a page that would clearly explain how to do that for a newbie like me (just rooted a Nook a long while ago...).

I am a fan of the pure stock AT&T rom frankly because everything works! Sure I'm missing some frills that version 4.2.2 has but oh well. I updated my phone with kies to ver 4.1.2, installed twrp recovery, rooted, and removed a lot of bloat. I'm pretty happy with my device now. I'll list below the steps I did.
To update to latest firmware (from any rom even rooted)
1. Open http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
2. Click Download for windows
3. Install Kies
4. Open Kies
5. Write down serial number of phone device (it's under battery)
6. Plug in phone to PC and power up phone while HOLDING volume down
7. Once you see the download screen on phone press volume up
8. On PC in Kies click "tools - Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
9. Type in SGH-I717 (all caps)
10. Type in serial number
11. Follow directions
12. Once phone reboots you will have the latest OFFICIAL AT&T firmware (JB 4.1.2 as of 6-1-2013)
13. Perform a factory data reset before proceeding (it helps it run smoother)
14. Type in google info and enjoy!
To root the stock 4.1.2 rom
1. Use Odin 1.85 in Admin Mode for Windows users.
2. Install TWRP 2.5 via PDA settings.
3. Reboot phone into Recovery.
4. Install SuperSU via the Zip.
5. Reboot phone and viola. SuperSU is there and works.
Download TWRP recovery the Odin Method here:

Unless you want to flash a AOSP rom if you want to you have to root, unlock, and add a recovery and then flash the ROM.

Yes just skip to the root part with odin.
The other thing you could do is do a factory reset. I had a terrible experience with JB at first and had to factory reset twice. Now my phone is snappy (really snappy) and I have the stock ROM and I am rooted. There are multiple reports that flashing the update does not get rid of all the bits and pieces from prior ROMs, which may have the effect of slowing down performance. This I got directly from Samsung (although I paraphrased it here).
I suggest just reading the super everything thread about 10 times if you are new to rooting/flashing. It is in the general forum. I was a complete n00b about 2 months ago, now I flash roms because I'm bored while driving in my car My personal opinion is to install twrp/flash supersu, then make a backup. Once you have that backup, go crazy and flash away. Just make sure you factory reset before flashing new roms. Don't do advanced, and if you do, don't wipe emmc or sdcard. emmc hosts that nice backup you just made. Even with the bugs in most of the roms, they are 100x better than stock, and much faster. Even after taking all the AT&T and Samsung garbage out, it is still slower than a custom rom. I just tried stock again 2 days ago, wanted to give 4.1.2 a twirl, and it was much slower than the revolt or carbon I normally run. Have fun and good luck!

You don't have to unlock a phone to flash a rom. You unlock only if you need to use a different carrier's sim card.
You don't have to root a phone to flash a rom. You only root if you need to access the main file system ( access the root directory ).
You don't have to flash a recovery to flash a rom. You can flash a rom using Samsung software Odin3, or Samsung Kies, or a linux version Heimdall. You flash a custom recovery to make backups and have a convenient method to flash roms and do maintenence.
But to uninstall the ATT/Samsung apps, rooting is the path. Right?

Yes then install Titanium Backup app. Freeze the apps you want to get rid of to be sure they aren't essential, then afer a fewbdays delete them.
But you can just flash the stock debloated JB rom.

Hi all
I want to root my Google Nexus 7 3G (UK version) so that I can install Titanium Backup Pro. I also want to be able to revert back to the original non-rooted version of Android in case I have to return it under warranty at some point in the future. So, is it possible to simply root it without installing ROMs/images etc?
I’m a newbie and what’s confusing me is that a lot of what I’ve read involves installing custom ROMS and replacing the stock version of Android and making backups of the original image etc.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You can root using Wugs toolkit its simple just follow the map on the software totally noob proof..if you looking to stay stock but rooted just untick the flash custom recovery when you reach that point of the map..back up your data using the software and restore the data with same software.

Well I tried rooting my Nexus 7 - it had a couple of hiccups - I had to disconnect the USB cable a couple of times as it sat for minutes on end doing nothing. Seemed to finish ok and I've been able to install Titanium Backup, but each time I want to install something the install button for the app doesn't work and I have to restart the device before trying again. I have it set to allow the installation of apps from unknown sources.
Also, I'm getting an error using the YouTube app - it says "logging in" and then comes up with something like "that action isn't allowed", so I haven't been able to get into YouTube.
Exchange for my email doesn't work either as after setting it up all it says is "waiting for sync". An hour later it's still saying that - I've removed the account and set it up again from scratch but the same thing.
I'm wondering what I've done wrong
Hi guys
I have a samsung galaxy note SGH-i717 that I installed CyanogenMod rom few months ago.
But, I suffering some of failures like suddenly turn off automatically and sometimes touch dosen't work.
That is why I'd like to restore my note to pure version of AT&T, then I want to get the official Jelly bean from AT&T.
I know how to uninstall CyanogenMod rom and retrive to my note to initialization.
(just install pure version of ICS to my note with odin right??)
but I don't know which rom should I download and install to my note. I mean which one is the pure rom that I have to install to get the official
Jelly bean thru Kies after make it to pure ICS.
Please let me know about the correct PURE ROM that possibly update to the official Jelly bean thru AT&T.
Thank you for your help in advance.
You can just install the AT&T JB update with ODIN. This will completely set your phone to full stock (stock android 4.1.2, stock recovery, stock modem), 100% stock. Back up anything (to your PC) you don't want to lose in case the process wipes everything out like pictures, apps, etc. You can find the ODIN file in several different threads. The SUPER EVERYTHING thread located in" Stickies" of the General section would be a good place to look.
Now, if you just want the stock rom only, there's more than one thread you can grab that at in the Development section which you can just flash like any other ROM.

Put the phone in download mode, open Kies, plug phone into usb, in Kies select tools, firmware upgrade and initialization. Have your phones serial number handy (Can be found under the battery). Enter model number using all caps (SGH-I717) and follow the prompts. This will put the phone back to stock 4.1.2. You will loose root and recovery, but will be back to complete stock. By far the easiest, safest method to completely wipe and start over.

I'm confused that which one is pure rom for me...
I thought,
1. download pure rom (ICS? or JB?) for i717
2. launch the rom with Odin
3. after initialization then, upgrade to the latest version of JB from ATT
Is this right that I thought?

To get PURE AT&T rom installed on your device you need to use kies!!
1. Open http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
2. Click Download for windows
3. Install Kies
4. Open Kies
5. Write down serial number of phone device (it's under battery)
6. Plug in phone to PC and power up phone while HOLDING volume down
7. Once you see the download screen on phone press volume up
8. On PC in Kies click "tools - Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
9. Type in SGH-I717 (all caps)
10. Type in serial number
11. Follow directions
12. Once phone reboots you will have the latest OFFICIAL AT&T firmware (JB 4.1.2 as of 6-1-2013)
13. Perform a factory data reset before proceeding (it helps it run smoother)
14. Type in google info and enjoy!
Several ways to get stock at&t. www.samfirm.com or use the file in the development section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41714172, or use the method mentioned above.
I am currently using a Galaxy Note from Rogers. I have root, on the OTA ICS ROM. I have CWM installed, and that is all I know. I would like to give JB a go. From what I understand, I need to install TWRP. Is that correct? I've heard it is better, and for the amount I actually use CWM, I doubt I will miss having it. If I install the KIES JB update, will I lose my root access, and my CWM? I haven't played with much in the way of ROM swapping, except on mt Toshiba Thrive, but I assume it is pretty much the same thing. I am looking for a quick run down of the steps I need to take to get to JB. All the info I have found and read, is a wee bit confusing, because there is so much of it lol. Also I did use ODIN to achieve root access on the ICS ROM, so I am a bit familiar with it, as it is pretty straight forward. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Shad.
If you use kies you will lose root access. You can update your recovery now and install a JB rom from the development section if you want. Or to update to latest stock firmware (from any rom even rooted)

I was amazed at how much more bloat my "new" JB Note seems to have than my ICS Note (both rooted but stock); your list reminds me of that. I think I disabled at least thirty apps on the new one.
It appears that I can't get it thru kies. I wonder if it has been pulled by Rogers...
I need to find a decent ROM then. Something with no problems with battery drain, and all the options of the phone, like the s-pen, work. I guess I have a bunch of reading to do. I've been getting mixed reviews about which recovery to use too. I have been using CWM for ages on all my devices, but have heard great things about TWRP. What makes TWRP better than CWM, can someone elaborate for me?

TWRP is more modern with a few added features. I believe backups are quicker too. I still run the latest version of CWM 6.0.3.1 myself and have no issues.
Hi, i'm on 4.1.2 and rooted using link2sd and foldermount so I can store apps on the external sd card. If I upgrade to 4.2.2 do I need to unroot first and then root again after flashing the new firmware?
Also i'm assuming i'm going to lose all my game saves etc as I will lose my link2sd and foldermount setups?
My phone is unlocked from the 3 network but still has the 3 network logo on boot up and so I thought if i'm going to have to start afresh I might as well get the stock unbranded S3 rom and get rid of the 3 network branding. I used Galaxsim unlock to unlock the network so i'm assuming I won't lose my network unlock by doing any of the above?
Thanks in advance for any help given.

Just flash any rooted 4.2.2 ROM via custom recovery. You should take a titanium backup and a nandroid backup first. If it flashes without a wipe, you've lost nothing. If you do have to wipe, you can restore using Titanium. The Nandroid is a full system restore incase nothing works.

Thanks. As you can tell i'm not up to speed on android rooting as i'm an ex iphone devotee that was good with jailbreaking but i'm new to android rooting really.
If I take an already rooted rom that surely still overwrites my current data as a rom replaces what is already there doesn't it? Can titanium and nandroid backup to pc via usb cable as my 32gb sd card won't have enough room to backup onto as it's heavily used for foldermount and link2sd.
If I wanted a pre rooted 4.2.2 stock rom for the I9300 is that something I can find on this forum to safely download and try? And if for any reasom i'm not happy with it the nandroid backup will restore the phone back to my original rom and setup as if I hadn't changed roms?
Rom and data are different. Please read the link in my signature "read before reading". It should contain everything you need to know (i'm not just saying this because I wrote it, but its really essential).

Thank you, again. I have read all that this morning and I am in no rush to change anything as one thing i've learnt from jailbreaking when I first got into it was rushing = ending up in a big mess and panicking you've bricked your device.
I rooted my S3 earlier this year and so I expect I still have all the files and the url of the guide I followed so I can check exactly what it was I did. My flash counter won't reset to zero which really bugged me and again another lesson learnt from doing something without fully checking the consequences.
I'm an IT engineer but all windows based so when it comes to android/linux what I think would be logical pretty much seems to go out the window!
Its always good to hold off and understand before moving forward. Read the thread through a few times.
I'm also a wintel IT engineer but I wanted to get into android development so I've been using Linux at home as my daily driver for 2 years.
If there's ever anything in that thread you want me to put into windows analogies or similes,,just ask in that thread. It will help me expand the thread also

Thanks again. I've been having a play about today and firstly got a titanium backup done for everything and then copied to my laptop. Then got the online version of nandroid backup so no reboot required to take the backup and did a full one of those and copied to my laptop too.
I've checked what root process I followed and it was one posted on the s3 forums using GalaxyS3root which uses a file via odin called CF-Root-SGS3-v6.1.tar. I won't post the link in case it breaks any rules etc. After reading your other post as advised I get the impression i'm not going to be able to reset my flash counter to zero. I have tried triangle away but it doesn't succeed.
As Android 4.3 is out/due out i'm now thinking pointless moving to 4.2.2 and I should wait and got straight to 4.3. Now what I wanted to ask was the following...
If I took titanium backup and then undid all my link2sd and foldermount links and then unrooted would I be able to flash the stock 4.3 rom when available, root it then reset up link2sd and foldermount and restore the titanium backup and have all my apps back to how they were?
I want to get an unmodified samsung rom that is unbranded so I can get rid of my 3 network branding I currently have on boot up. I also want to know if it is possible in anyway to reset the flash counter so I could in theory if unrooted get ota updates.
First question...
If you wipe and manually set up link2sd - when you then restore via titanium everything should be as it was.
You can reset the counter before unrooting. Theres a return-to-stock guide stuck in the "sticky roll-up thread" that covers it. The counter goes up to 1 on boot so the trick is to prevent the boot...

Thanks, so the counter can't be cleared permanently for warranty purposes as a reboot will just put it back to 1. So as I have a custom recovery on the phone that went on with the root will that cause issues if I tried to update via official updates?
It can be prevented with an ics bootloader.
Imho its best to stay away from official updates when rooted

Thanks. An ics bootloader however will just further invalidate the warranty and also prevent stock updates? What I had been getting at with wanting to do stock updates was to unroot first. However now i've got the custom recovery there that in itself makes stock updates an unwise move even with rooting removed?
So with my current setup what is the best method to go to 4.2.2 without using a custom rom?
They check warranty by looking at the information provided in the bootloader. Your warranty is either void or not void. There is no such thing as further invalidation. Its 0 or 1. There is no 2.
There is no "best way" without using a "custom rom". If you want to flash a stock rom, do it. Theres only one way.
By the way, 4.2.2 hasn't been officially released, so you wont be getting stock updates. You'll have to manually keep flashing release via odin until you get one that is official. Then if your csc is wrong, you have to change it (which requires factory reset) and then you will still only get updates over USB if you're rooted.
Don't get me wrong, but that sounds ridiculous to me. I just don't understand any rooted user wanting to do that

Thanks for the quick reply. I've just read through the link on your thread for returning to stock and unless i've misread it you can actually return to stock even if you have installed a custom recovery/used the auto cf root method of rooting? That's step 16?
Sorry on the invalidating warranty thing, what I meant was that if you use the ics bootloader you fix the triangleaway issue but you are then left with the ics bootloader so your warranty is still invalid.
My mistake on 4.2.2, what's the latest official version as if I plug into kies it tells me there is an update available which i'd wrongly assumed was 4.2.2?
4.1.2 is the latest.
They don't check bootloader version for warranty. They only check download mode.
You can return to stock so long as phone fully boots and usb works. If phone only partially boots, you can't return to stock or reset counter. This is why IMHO its better to have an ics bootloader where counter is always in the reset state

An update won't necessarily update the android version. It will update the Samsung build version. Samsung have probably close to 100 updates on 4.1.2 (globally).
Android is just the base OS. It has Samsung GUI on top of that (and frameworks to support Samsung proprietary features). So Samsung take the android code for 4.1.2 and add all their stuff to it. But they will improve on that over a number of builds. Fixing bugs, addressing performance issues etc.
However, Samsung tend to release new features in line with android base updates too. so if Samsung are working on 4.1.2 and decide, "hey this feature would be cool", they would usually wait for the next android version to release it.
Hope that makes sense
Did that address your confusion?
Or is your confusion about returning to stock?
You return to stock by flashing a full ROM (which includes a bootloader, Android ROM, Recovery, baseband etc) over USB connection to a computer. The phone is put into download mode and flashed. if your USB is faulty, this wont work (obviously).
Before returning to stock, you need to ensure your download mode doesnt show how many times you flashed custom things. You can reset it then flash stock and warranty is fine. However, to reset it, android needs to boot, so if android doesnt boot and counter says more than "0", you've lost warranty, With ICS bootloader, you reset it once and it always says "0", so you are protected if phone doesnt boot.

Thanks for both explanations :good: It was the ics bootloader I was really confused about. I'm in two minds as to change anything, the techy part of me says play with it and learn and understand more about what you've explained but the other side says i've got everything setup perfectly at the moment now I have link2sd and foldermount working and not to risk ruining that setup. I think the only thing i'd notice from 4.2.2 is the access camera from the lock screen feature.

If you want to continue to use stock.....
1) Backup all your app data with titanium backup (as a precaution)
2) Copy all internal /sdcard data to PC
3) Flash whatever "official" ROM you want via Odin
4) If it doesn't boot, perform factory reset#
5) re root using either cf auto root or framaroot (both do not give custom recovery)
6) Install Titanium backup and restore data.
Its worth noting a factory reset from custom recovery only wipes data and settings. A reset from stock recovery wipes internal /sdcard storage too.

Thanks again :good: I have CWM installed and when I open CWM Manager I get a message "this version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer. It appears you are running a different recovery. Various features have been disabled."
If I boot into recovery at the top it says "CWM-based recovery v5.5.04 :: CF-v1.3"
What effect does any of that have on the above steps?

CWM manager is an app to manage CWM. Its pretty pointless. I dont think it works on JB ROMs though.
CWM 5 is old and should be replaced by users who want to continue using a custom recovery.
The flashing stock from Odin process will overwrite any bootloader, recovery, ROM and Baseband. Nothing you have can prevent that.
Hi guys!
This is my first time to post a thread in this forum, I just bought a Samsung Note with model SHV-E160S, Android Version 4.0.4 and Build# IMM76D.VH29. I know that this is a Korean Variant and I'm using it here in Philippines (I can send SMS -- Openline). I don't know if this phone is already rooted, I don't know how to check.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to upgrade this phone from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 then later on upgrade it to Android Lollipop 5.1 and I don't know how. It will be a great pleasure if someone help me or direct me on what should I do.
I'm totally new to android devices and I'm not familiar on how to upgrade, update or root an android device.
Thanks!
Hello guys, any ideas? Thanks!

You'll be able to find your firmware here https://mega.nz/#F!IxJTDDQQ!TTgzxjX8d7EnzemoIj0ogg
4.1.2 was the last official update from Samsung for your device. If you want to update to newer than that, it will have to be done via updating with a custom recovery and custom rom, such as TWRP recovery and CyanogenMod 11 or 12/12.1.
Follow upgrade instructions from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 and sub your firmware file instead of N7000.

Thank you es0tericcha0s for this information.
What I'm trying to do right now is updating my SHV-e160s from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 using Kies v2.6. Unfortunately, I'm getting this error "Failed to run firmware upgrade: unknown error.". Until now, I'm afraid to update my firmware manually as I don't have much knowledge to do that.
1) Download firmware and Odin
2) Open Odin as admin
3) Load firmware in PDA or AP slot depending on which version of Odin used
4) Boot to Download Mode and plug in your phone
5) Once Odin recognizes it ( will show highlighted - COM:xx where "xx" is any number, doesn't matter which ones) hit start
6) Grab a drink and a snack and come back in 10 minutes or so
7) If device bootloops, reset in recovery
Once the files are downloaded, the whole process takes less than 10-12 minutes or so. Everything you need is in the guide I linked to besides the firmware you need, which is in the Mega link. If you need a video guide, there are dozens on YouTube. I find it much easier to use than Kies and once you have it working, then there are not many things you will do that restoring with Odin and a factory reset won't get you out of.

Hello, sorry I forgot to ask, will this root my device? I'm afraid I might bricked it.
No, this is just the official update. As long as the download is good and you follow those directions, you won't do anything that won't be easily recoverable if it doesn't work right away. Soft bricking is not a big deal and nothing you would do here would cause anything worse unless you unplug the phone in the middle of something important.
---------- Post added at 09:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:20 AM ----------
And because you'll probably ask... It's easy to root. Just download Chainfire's SuperSU zip, put it on your phone's storage and use Odin to install TWRP recovery (just like you do with the whole firmware package) , boot to recovery before it boots to the OS and install the zip. Reboot and enjoy.

Hello again es0tericcha0s, I haven't tried the instructions that you gave me yesterday as I'm still downloading the firmware, last night I encountered an issue after enabling my Bluetooth, something like "NFC Service has stopped." just keeps on popping up. So I turned off the bluetooth then restarted my phone, it went well for a while.
After that, I enabled my 3G Cellular Data to check what was NFC service error is, after a few minutes, I lost my signal, phone turned to No Service, then in Settings -> About Phone, I got an Unknown Baseband.
EDIT
I got No Service since last night up until now.
EDIT Oct. 13, 2015 9:49 AM +08:00 Manila Time
I manage to update my phone from ICS 4.0.4 to JB 4.1.2. But still, my baseband is Unknown and I have no signal.
If it did that before you tried to flash anything...that doesn't sound good. Hard to say without testing it, but kind of sounds like the baseband chip (hardware issue).

I also though of that, hopefully not.
When I first got the phone, my gf sent me our pictures via bluetooth , no issues occured. After a while, I noticed that there are so many photos of the previous owner (around 1000+) and mp3s (around 1000+ also). So I connected the phone via usb to my pc and deleted all those pictures and mp3s inside the My Computer -> SHV-E160S -> Phone (Computer\SHV-E160S\Phone). After doing so, I started to encouter some issues, when enabling the bluetooth, the phone hangs and reboots then the error 'NFC service has stopped' keeps on popping up, until it went Unknown Baseband.
Now, the phone keeps on rebooting similar to the symptoms that it gets when baseband version is unknown.
I'm looking for solutions to fix the unknown baseband and saw the Back up and Restore EFS, I just need to root the device to try this fix. Maybe I'll post an update whether if I manage to solve this problem or not, if it didn't fix the issue then maybe the problem is the baseband chip. what a crap!
This is my reference for the EFS Fix

Thanks!
Rooting will be easy. Just install TWRP with Odin and use the SuperSU zip from Chainfire. Process should take like 5 minutes once everything is downloaded.

So I need to install TWRP first before rooting the device? Also I'm planning to use a rooted stock firmware which is 4.1.2, I just don't know the difference between UH24 and MH2, I've read that UH24 is already old and it's better to use a MH2 build and what is the Recovery UH24/MH2?
EDIT:
I forgot, I cannot check my current Baseband since it is still unknown.
EDIT: 12:30PM +8:00
I managed to get my Build#, it is MH2, I'm currently looking for a rooted 4.1.2 MH2 download link.
Way faster and easier to use the method I outlined, but either way should work.

Sorry, I'm really a root virgin here. While following your advise, I'm also currently looking at this guide -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924535. I'm done downloading Tegrak for MH2, a small problem I encountered here is I don't have a folder named 'sdcard' in my phone, so I created one and copied the 'Kernel' .zip, also I copied it to usbStorage folder.
I'm about to flash the 'Recovery' .tar to my phone. Hoping a success result
Should be fine. Your phone's internal storage is seen by the OS as /sdcard. Doesn't matter where you put the file as long as you remember where it's at so you can navigate to it through recovery to install.

Finally! I'm done rooting my phone, though I encountered another issues again. My Menu Button and Back Button does not work.
UPDATE: 4:08PM +8:00GMT
I think I found the problem as to why my Menu button and Back button doesn't work. I'v check my Baseband and it is -> E160SKSJMH1 and my Build # is -> JZO54K.E160SKSJMH2. Am I using a wrong FW as supposed to what I should be using? Which build should I install, the MH1 or the MH2?
Also, the Tegrak Kernel I've used is Build 48 for SHV-E160S MH2. I've also tried factory resetting the phone but the issue still exists.
Thanks!
UPDATE: 4:41PM +8:00GMT
Managed to fixed the issue by updating my Touch Firmware. Cool!
