I have the sch-i605 rooted with Adam outlers casual root... So I have super such, twrp, and boot loader unlocked. I made a recover backup in twrp and wiped the necessary files and flashed carbon job 4.2.2 ROM.. I got it all setup and it seems to be pretty stable so far. Downloaded additional apps that I want and thought to myself that maybe I should save a recovery of this ROM the way it is so that I could have two recoveries to choose from.. Figured if anything went wrongi could flash back to my stock rom or ifi wanted to flash another custom rom and then go back to my carbon rom setup the way I have iti could easily flash back to it.. So I did another backup thinking I would end up with two backups in my twrp/backups for but when I went there I only had the most recent one (carbon not stock backup)... It's not a huge deal right now cause carbon is working pretty well, but I feel a little in easy that I don't have my stock backup....
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... Could I use Odin and flash the stock image in download mode or would that in root me? Etc.
Did you backup the rom the first time? You say you backed up the recovery.

I made 2 TWRP backups and didn't see them at first when I pressed the Restore button, but then I pressed the "Storage:..." label under the screen heading title and was able to change the location. After I did that I was able to see my 2 backups. Maybe you'll find your first backup at some other location.

unfortunately this wasn't the case for me... i used file manager and es file explorer and i only have one twrp file and its the one that has the carbon rom backup not the stock....
so i remember i had a soft brick once while trying to get adam outlers casual root to work.... i downloaded a stock android 4.1.2 md5 file and .pit file and put the phone into download mode and use the odin app to flash those two files.... so i know if need be i could do that probably again to get back to stock, BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I WOULD STILL BE ROOTED? (IE.. BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED, SUPER SU, TWRP, ANDALL THAT??)

If you have TWRP it will be the recovery that is there when you boot into recovery (ie. Vol up, Home, Power)
If you have root you will either see the root app in your apps or you can use the root checker app in the market.
If you use those files to go back to stock though you will not have root, be unlocked, or have TWRP. The only way to be rooted when going back to stock is to use root66 as the ROM instead of 4.1.2.

There is no need to flash this unless you messed up or just want to go back to stock (with root).

DO NOT install it as update.zip . you are supposed to unzip the file after you download it and place the folder called 2010-09-21.18.31.12 in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup then you boot into cwm and goto backup and restore -> restore -> 2010-09-21.18.31.12

Nandroid makes a complete backup of your phone, all your data, apps, everything. It's like it takes a snapshot of your phone, and when you restore it your phone will be back to the exact state of when you made the backup.
The image i posted will take your phone back to what it was like when you pulled it out of the package, except with root. In order to use nandroid, you have to flash the cwm kernel and install the recovery for your phone through rom manager.

Ok, so I am getting my Fascinate tomorrow (can't wait by the way). I have been cruising the forums doing my research before I attempt to root, flash CWM recovery, etc. I am completely unfamiliar with with using Odin, but have used nandroid via Amon's recovery on my Droid Eris (which is running Froyo by the way).
Here's my question: how do I apply this image? Do I have to be rooted first, or can I go ahead and apply this zip and never have to fool with Oden? I just want to be sure I don't make a mistake. Eris development was firmly established by the time I arrived on the scene, so I have not had to worry about these kinds of things. Sorry if this seems like a noob question?

I really appreciate the prompt response. I think I am going to wait until a dev develops a root friendly vzw update. Or I may go ahead and root and wait till then ..... decisions, decisions
I saw where you posted that some Sticky topics need to be compiled, wasupwithuman. I could not agree more. A couple more questions for you (maybe these will help someone else too) .... (1) How stable is CWM on the Fascinate? I read somewhere that it is a duct-taped together recovery that will do for now. Is this true??? (2) Should I just wait for a dev to develop a custom recovery (like Amon's on the Eris), or is CWM stable enough as it currently is? There seems to be some confusion about this from topic to topic. (3) This is unrelated, but has anyone confirmed Wireless Tether working on their Fascinate. I believe I read that it was somewhere else, but would like to know for sure. Thanks again!!!
P.S. - First link is down, but I found another guide on XDA and will probably just follow it (considering it uses adb which I am familiar with from my Eris).
Want to flash a new rom and try out themes but I want to get confirmation on the steps I'll be taking rather than just rely on my search results.
1. I found this for installing cwm:
http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...-on-att-galaxy-note-sgh-i717-belltelusrogers/
Since our note isn't built into ROM Manager, I'm failing to see if theres a connection between that program and what is being done in the above tutorial. Kinda confused here and unsure of the next step. Am i just trying to install cwm or am I running a backup of some kind after doing so?
2. I've installed and ran titanium backup (i'm rooted)
3. http://www.chargeforums.com/forum/d...-flashing-roms-return-stock-odin-picture.html
Is all of this correct for our note as well (obviously replacing the pda with the saurom or collective rom)
Anything else I should do?
I know this is newbish but it seems there's a million ways to do this kind of stuff so I want to be sure I'm doing everything the common way that's done around here so it's easier to troubleshoot etc. if I have any issues.
so since your note is rooted and you don't have the clockwork recovery on your note? if not.
the first link that you post is correct for installing cmw.
or
try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431
then flashing Rom.
Dont use the last link you post. it is for Droid.
so the method for flashing a new rom is the same as installing cwm with oden? just simply put my phone in DL mode and open it in pda with oden?
i flashed the cwm using that thread and the oden method. maybe i'm still not understanding what cwm is. am I supposed to do something with it before flashing the rom, or is it something that is just necessary to be flashed onto the phone before flashing the rom? is the titanium backup all I needed to do?
edit: and also will i need to re-setup everything or will restoring all apps+system data with titanium backup after flashing new rom essentially put me back exactly where i was setup wise?

I'm a noob as well and I'm only 1 step ahead of you so far. I'm rooted and just installed cwm. I'm ready to install saurom and based on the research I've done you go into cwm (by pressing both up/down vol and power at same time).
That's where you will install saurom and without rebooting install the att fix. Assuming you downloaded the files and transferred them over to sd card. That's all the info I've gathered so far.
As soon as I installed cwm I immediately made a backup of my stock rom. I highly suggest you backup your stock as well. This is a great easy tutorial on how to do it. If anything goes wrong with installing custom roms you can simply go back to stock.

Not to hijack your thread but I was about to post about this same topic and wanted confirmation on the steps.
1. root the note -check
2. install cwm - check
3. make backup of stock rom - check (or is using titanium backup the same thing?)
4. download "saurom_ATT_APN_US_Fix_.zip" and "SAUROM_XLA2_RCVI.zip" and transfer to sd card.
5. enter cwm mode by hitting up/down vol and power buttons at same time.
6. navigate to the files and install saurom and without rebooting install att fix.
7. reboot and that's it??
Do I need to do anything else?

Not a highjack at all, that's more help than I started with. Hopefully someone can confirm your steps and we can get this flashed! I just made a full backup with cwm as well.
I would say stop using google and search here on XDA in the DEV section for the i717 (the Note) before you wind up flashing a ROM not meant for this phone.
The key here is read, read, read and then read more. Evey thing you need to root, flash CWM (specific version for the i717) and install any custom ROM is here on XDA.
Be VERY careful and understand that if you flash with ODIN (depending on what you flash - system, kernel etc) you may increase your flash counter. Most of the rooting methods and utilities indicate if the counter will increase or not.
TiBa - backups up your apps and setting on booted up
CWM - tool to wipe various areas of the device, flash ROMs and install packages
Nandroid Backup - backups up your ROM and is done once inside CWM.

Be sure you understand how to return to stock just in case that becomes necessary down the line.

How to Flash a ROM????
Basic Steps
! Choose the ROM that you want and download its .zip file
!! Transfer the zip file to your phone’s sd card. Do not put it into any folder.
!!! Turn off your phone and reboot into recovery, usually by holding the down button and power button at the same time.
!!!! Do a Nandroid backup
!!!!! Wipe the phone 3 times by clearing cache/factory restore 3 times and wiping dalvik cache and system format
!!!!!! Flash the zip file that you put on your sd card
!!!!!!! Reboot phone

I'm not sure how to do a nandroid backup... not sure what it is. Didn't find any specific topics on it searching here and nothing in the play store. how is this backup different from the backup using cwm recovery mode> backup ?
Are the above steps otherwise good? It seems different ROM's have different instructions for installing them, from what I've gathered. I guess I'm going to try saurom first, btw since I really like the transfuzion theme.

a nandroid back is done from inside CWM. Go to the backup and restore and backup. This will backup your current rom to the SD Card (internal or external depending on which option you pick) in the clockwork mod folder. This will save your current rom exactly how it is. You want to do this before flashing anything generally.
To flash a new Rom, you will want to make sure you have done a nandroid back up, make sure all the necessary files are on your sd card. Boot into CWM (hold vol up and down and power, when it turns off it will vibrate, let go of power and hold vol up and down until you are in CWM). Then you want to wipe all data (factory reset), wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (in advanced menu). Then install zip from sd card, find your rom zip file and flash that. This is what i usually do. I am not 100% sure the complete wipe is necessary for the Note, it was on my old Inspire, so I still do as it is habit and good practice.
I had already posted a response but apparently it disappeared. So I guess I did an n Android backup already with Cwm I just didn't realize that's what it was called.
I guess with those instructions it seems very straight forward. My only question now I think is with regards to the kernel. On the first page in the saurom thread there is talk about using a specific kernel, do I still need to worry about this?

A backup in CWM will save your entire devices settings exactly as you have them, including apps and settings.
Use titanium backup only for app backups. You press menu -> batch -> backup all user apps.
Usually it is stated to not restore apps WITH user settings but I haven't had any problems with saurom after doing such.
Also, I believe saurom uses either da_g's overclocked kernel or holokernal. You don't have to worry about that part as it is baked into the ROM.

I've just rooted my device....first time ever, and just going through many of the lists of things to install and do. ROM Manager seems to be mentioned on every site. I installed it, was going to try and make a nandroid backup before I venture into flashing a custom ROM. First off, when I try to put in my Recovery Setup, I dont see the Galaxy S4 in the list of phones. Right now it just says Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.x.x.x
I thought this was correct, but when I go to "Reboot into Recovery" and try to make a backup....there is no option to make a backup on the startup list.
I've never used ROM manager before....have no idea what I need to change as I cant even find any GS4 listed. I was assuming I set it up incorrectly and thats why I couldnt backup. Anyone know what might be going on here?
Any help here? I'm confused, to get ClockworkMod Recovery to install....you install ROM Manager correct? I've uninstalled ClockworkMod ROM Manager and reinstalled it, still dont have the option to select a GS4 and no option to make a backup when in recovery mode. I do need to use this to make a recovery of my phone if I flash a new ROM and want to go back correct?
Every video I've seen of people setting this up on their GS4, find a GS4 on the phone list....why dont I see one? Is there another component needed to use this properly?

BTW, does ROM Manager need to stay on the phone to do this? (sorry noob here)
I did as you said, everything went fine....but when I reboot in recovery, I still have no option to make a backup. This is the proper procedure to make a backup of your phone before flashing a custom ROM right, or am I going about this the wrong way? I'm just stock rooted. I flashed the Harman/Kardon file but didn't like it
I dont think there is one. If you made a Nandroid then you could just restore the /system partition and that should restore it to normal. If not then I believe your only option to use stock again would be to do an RUU as I don't think there's any stock roms that can be flashed. Well there may be but I never found one. If you're okay with doing a custom ROM then I'd recommend CleanROM or Android Revolution HD, both are stock but with tweaks and optimizations.
If you still wanna go with stock then to keep ur stuff just back it up with titanium backup and turn it into a flash able zip and backup ur internal storage to a computer or something then do it and when you're back on stock go into your recovery and flash the zip. Once you also restore your internal storage and do some re-organizing everything should be back to normal.
BUT research yourself first, there may be a way to do that without doing the complicated process of an RUU. Anyways Goodluck with whichever thing you choose to do!

1: Search "Sunshine" in your browser and go to the website .
2: Download the Sunshine apk and install it
3: after installing it on your device go ahead and open it,the app will let you know if it is compatible or not .(if it's compatible than accept payment type and continue the process ,its worth the $25 for a great nights sleep)
If it states its not compatible than you may want to flash a stock based sense ROM and run the app again

By the way how did you convert to GPE without already having S-off ?
Anything I read states you must be S-off to convert from one to the other.

If your overall goal is S-off
Use your first stock backup or download a stock backup and make sure it's rooted.
It should be version 4.4.2 (1.58 firmware) stock kernel and run Sunshine again

do i flash it like any rom?
Most backups you download need to be extracted and placed in your TWRP/BACKUP directory and restored like a normal restore .if its your backup you made than wipe data/factory reset from custom recovery and restore the backup of choice ,when finished restoring than reboot system and that should do it
Just as a reference how to guide.the below link is an HTC one but not our m8.either way its going to work the same.

Im using a Nandroid backup from one of the forums, It is a zip file so will i flash it?
Edit: I got my recovery img and backup from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Not yet,you need to extract it first .go to extraction location and move the numbered folder over to your TWRP/backup folder.than boot to recovery and make sure its in your restore location before doing a wipe and restore.

this is what the thread says to do. Where is the boot.img?
Q : How do i restore the stock nandroid backup
A : In general :
- Place the nandroid backup unpacked on the sdcard of the phone in the right backup folder
* Philz touch uses - Clockworkmod\Backups\
* TWRP uses - TWRP\Backups\ or TWRP/Backups/serialnum/ (replace serialnum with your device's serial number. To have TWRP create the proper directory structure for you, just do a simple backup of just the boot partition and put the backup files in there) thanks to garyd9 for the additional info
- Flash the boot.img or boot.emmc.win file from the nandroid backup
- Make a full wipe in the recovery
- Restore the nandroid backup and reboot
