200 Apps Installed. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so here i am, i was looking at google for explanations and unfortunately it doesnt help. i was with my s3 for almost a year now, i have about 200 apps installed. bloatwares are deleted. I have dozens of apps and 3D games. i always flash rom every week and it is because every 3 days my phone becomes very laggy. The first two days are smooth, but why on the third day it always lags as hell and i got no other choice but to flash another rom(all custom roms lags on the 3rd day no matter what rom it is). This is my burden, so what im trying to say is that do i have the same experience as all like you guys? and if u guys would tell me to delete some of my apps i would say wtf i needed those games because i do not have a ps vita or psp i also needed all my aps and i already deleted bloatwares. So, does S3 just sucks? should i use other higher phone? its just im tired of flashing every week. and i cant afford to just install max of 20 apps just to maintain the smoothness.
PS: I hope some people can show their insights with this. Thanks.

Likewise, I often have over 200 apps without "lag" on various different ROMs. Including TouchWiz ROMs.
200 Apps aren't running consecutively so the amount of apps installed shouldn't have much affect on every day usage in terms of latency.
More likely, there's a specific app leaking or doing something it shouldn't

As Glebun said, buy Autostarts on Google Play and disable all unnecessary apps during phone startup.

lag issues? i'm not familiar with blade buddy or that touch screen app for galaxy.
i haven't done anything *too* intensive on the phone but i have rarely experience any type of lag on this device. the lack of lagging has been very impressive to me.
if you are on the stock ROM and kernel and still experiecing lag, based on my personal experience, you might want to look into taking it back for an exchange as it could be a hardware issue.
if you don't experience the lag on a stock ROM and kernel, it might be whatever custom ROM or kernel you're using has an issue or bug. if you're on a custom ROM/kernel, also good to check in those specific threads to see if anybody else has reported a similar issue so the dev knows to look into it and resolve.
hope that helps!
Yea when I first got the phone the xda east major laggy and that's before I rooted so I guess I need to take it back then cuz this sucks...since I rooted its been flawless but couple days later the lag would come back and now my screen is becoming unresponsive at time for like 2-3 secs!!!

yea. as a last resort test, i'd flash everything back to stock and run it for a day. see if its still laggy. if it is still laggy, find good examples of when it lags so when you take it back, you can show the person how laggy it is through the examples.
hopefully you can swap out for a device w/no issues!

lol yea, given the unknown area rooting a device currently sits from a legal standpoint, i'd avoid anything related to rooting the device as a prime example.
ideally, if you're experiencing lag on the device, it will occur frequently in common tasks like making/ending a phone call or moving between text messages or moving between menus in the settings screen, etc. it makes the best case for having an issue when you're able to demonstrate it lags during normal routine operations.
hope that helps!

hah yea. working on mainly two small apps on the market, root check and flashimagegui. pondering publishing the completely stock ROM with root, busybox and some developer tools i use on my personal device (as I did publish this on the evo and it was decently popular - might be where you saw my name). also, trying to help out (give back) in the q&a boards when i can!
if you find some good common tasks which cause the device to lag, post them back here as people with the same or similar issues might find this thread through searching and it'll give them some rough benchmark to compare against.
i've yet to see this device lag through any common tasks i run. previous android phones ive had would experience lag so this device has definitely impressed me!

Battery draining faster with ICS update

I just upgraded my SGS2 to ICS, since that the battery of my phone draining hell lot quicker than earlier. Earlier it use to go down by 1-2 % in the night (when m sleeping) but after update it go down by 11-12%
actually the battery performance should be better, right?

Hi,
I have same feeling. After a week on Slim Ics I can say that with GB my battery life was better. By 10pm everyday I was having left about 40-45% with GB , but with ICS the best I can get is :confuse 30% , mostly about 25% left and I'm having same kind of usage. It's true that with ICS it seems smoother and more responsive .

A fair price to pay.
There are a lot of threads on thus subject if you have a search of the forums.
I had the same issue on upgrading from GB but after following advice and doing some investigation and troubleshooting of rogue apps I now have much better battery life on ics than I ever got on GB.
Read the forums and follow the advice, track down the culprits and you too will reap the benefits

There are LOTS of threads on the subject. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for "battery ics sgs2" or similar and you will turn up pages of information.
The sad thing is the best piece of advice I found was that no two people will have exactly the same solution. You need to identify what is eating your battery using a tool like "Better Battery Stats" or "Go Power Manager". You then need to decide how important the culprits are and remove them or look for updates.
Titanium Backup is useful as it allows you to freeze apps so you can see if they make a difference. It helps if you are rooted as I found several stock apps at the core of my issues. You can't freeze them unless you are rooted.
Siyah Kernel is also very useful, it seems to manage power better than stock. I also found that a factory reset, clearing user data and clearing all of my caches (including Dalvik) helped enormously. It is time consuming to re-install all of your apps from scratch but it does seem to make a huge difference. It looks like some apps retain data from GB that caused issues in ICS.
I found that exchange services were using a huge amount of juice before I cleared all data and caches. That seems to stop completely after the big clear out!
The main thing is no two people seem to have exactly the same problem. It is important therefore that you take a problem solving approach, change one thing at a time and wait long enough to see if it works.
There's your bone, go chew!

Same old, same old.... These are the same tricks that work with EVERY ROM upgrade.... If u get a better battery life outta ICS than u did with GB, u really screwed up installing GB...

i usually get 2 days of battery life on ics 4.0.3....
First of all, you need to be clear whether you upgraded from stock GB to Stock ICS, or a Custom GB ROM to a Custom ICS ROM, since the Custom ROMs do offer better battery life over the stock version.
People here are giving great advice regarding the use of Titanium to freeze any apps that you are not using, e.g. Google+, Samsung bloatware, etc... - this will save the average RAM, hence the battery life. Also, do use Task Manager often (especially before going to sleep) to kill all the background apps.
I installed many Custom ROMs and now running Resurrection v2.1 and very happy with battery life. You must be realistic with expectations - read this http://blog.gsmarena.com/our-samsun...e-test-is-complete-check-out-how-it-did-test/
Overall, if you will do a clean install (format everything - internal/external/MMC and clear cache/Dalvik/battery stats) of Resurrection ICS v2.1 or Litening v3.2, then you should see even an increase in battery life!
Hope it helps and happy flashing ;]]

yes. both apps do in fact require root. however on my other devices, i do not have an issue closing the apps.
I've had problems similar to this, you need to be careful with root apps because they can do weird things to your phone, maybe try a different rom and see if you still have the problem

I'm not familiar with faceniff and I've never used Wi-Fi kill so I don't know how much they push you're phone. Are you overclocking or undervolting? Maybe you're using one of flapp's performance settings? If it's always just those two apps and it does it every time, then maybe you should run a logcat to help diagnose the issue.

82 system files/bloat safely frozen with titanium Pick n choose !

I have compiled 82 system apps that I have frozen via titanium backup pro, I have risked a lot with my 600$ device and guinea pigged myself as a test subject ,for the greater cause .Of course I do have plenty nandroid backups if anything were to have gone wrong .As of now there are no know issues, force closes, etc....force closes are common when u freeze the wrong app, just for future reference !Also some force closes render the phone helpless unless you do a battery pull..in which the HTC one dorsnt have a battery to pull.
So as far as my compiled list is concerned it Is safe for everyone to use.
Everything works as should. You can choose to safely freeze whichever of the 82 apps/apks you prefer to. Feel free to add any apps you have also tested to be safe to freeze .
This greatly helps reduce lag , free up ram and and may even provide better battery life ,due to android os that sometimes has many system apps... that we don't know what they do exactly but many greatly affect our battery life because they unnecessarily run in the background and drain batter and the majority of them we never use .
This is the list freeze as many or as little as you desire to.
Every one check marked indicates it's safe to freeze .
NOTE: DO NOT DELETE/REMOVE ANY OF THESE APPS IN TITANIUM BACKUP UNLESS YOU POSITIVELY HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP IN cwm or twrp RECOVERY.I AM ONLY PROVIDING INFO ON "FREEZING APPS" "NOT DELETING".
I WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OR FEEL OBLIGATED TOO...FOR THE LACK OF FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS POSTED .
Please leave feedback with your observations towards any improvements or issues if any that you may experience.

Well, this list is very subjective. Alot of what you froze alot of people actually use. Like street view...document viewer...the remote app...among others. From looking at what you diabled it seems all you want to do is make calls and text lol.
THIS IS ABOUT WHAT CAN BE FROZEN WITHOUT ANY SYSTEM ISSUES OR FORCE CLOSES .
If you want to unappreciated that's fine too.
Obviously I have takin the freezing to an extreme,it's called freezing as many apps as possible that DONT AFFECT SYSTEM FUNCTION IN A NEGATIVE MANOR.There are many I'm sure who don't use these apps and would find It fine to do so ....and only care about speeding up there device ...I have done no wrong ..infact if anything I've answered possible questions in the future on if them apps can be frozen ....maybe there are people who would want the most possible options .So it is up to whomever to pick and choose what they want to freeze from the list. All I have done was made It clear that if they want to take it to the extreme ,all these system apps and apks are safe to freeze with no issues .

You think you quoted the wrong post
Exactly what I was looking for, one of the first things I do when I got my phone. I can confirm this is a good list

Lag

Where is the lag that everyone speaks of? Nice amount off apps installed and my S5 is smooth. Not rooted or anything. Completely stock!

I have to say I am with you on this one. I am actually very happy with my S5.
No lag on my end either.

I think it's just people throwing their panties in the wad. If the phone is not perfect, already wanting a replacement.

Yeah, I'm seeing 0 lag... coming from LG G2 and this phone is just as smooth or smoother... dunno what they are taking about. I installed Nova Launcher for the first time in 6 months and omg I didn't realize how much I missed it. (never installed on LG G2 cause I was worried knock on/off would break, but never bothered to even try it out lol. /lazy).
All of you say NO lag, is anyone here actually rooted?
I'm rooted, which was fine while running stock...but I've installed Omega (international ROM) and yes, I'm experiencing some lag. I've also lost the "HD" feature while in a call...I'm considering coming back to a debloated version of the stock ROM while maintaining root.
Not rooted here yet. Going to see how long I can last before I feel I need to/get desperate.
I've made up my mind to wait for a TMO custom ROM, the international ROM that i've tried caused me a little bit of lag.

that could just be the result of omega being very early - the OP admits that he hasn't done much with the ROM - just enought to get soemthing out I think - I would imagine it will improve as development progresses.
I flashed omega - saw a little bit of lag and installed LagFree from Playstore - I also have an ap called "Seeder" that i use if Lag becomes an issue - after i installed those, I didn't see any lag issues on Omega - I didn't need to install either one of them on the stock rom - smooth as silk.

Yea, there isn't enough change in the Omega rom that warrants flashing, unless I had an international version of the S5. I'm using the debloat software right now on the stock TMO image and seeing what that's gonna do.
Well sometimes walking up my screen I do get a second or so lag before the screen comes on.

I also don't like losing wifi calling - so for me - an international rom has to be really special to make me want to flash it - but then I have an addiction to flashing - so sometimes I just flash to check it out - and then restore my previous rom - it's a disease...lol..maybe one day I will get help..
It's typical for the regular TouchWiz specific carrier to have issues, especially with bloatware . That's why we won't see the true potential till we start seeing custom Roms. Any phone stock is like a empty canvas
Mostly no lag here. I disabled the Lookout or Lockout, whatever it's called, security thing that kept scanning everything I was doing. Switched to ART. Some other stuff I don't remember. The only lag I experienced was a second delay when pressing the recent apps button. But it's a hell of a lot faster than the S4's. Also switching between pages on the UI was a little stuttery, turning off battery saving mode fixed that. Also don't forget that the battery saving mode limits the CPU.
Ehh, just got my S5 yesterday and am having super lag. Even just typing on the keyboard is laggy and choppy. Flicking around home screens, app drawer, and menus mostly fine... but typing and scrolling through just about every app (including email) is choppy and stutters. Haven't seen it, but friend claims his S5 is fine, so it might just be my phone. ..
Taking it back for an exchange anyways because of screen discoloration issues, maybe I just got a bum unit. Definitely not right though, have never seen so much lag on a phone before.

My phone seems a little choppy especially when opening up messaging and the keyboard popping up.. Sometimes waking up the phone tends to have a slight lag. This is me being stock not even rooted yet. Don't know if rooting will be worth it..

The problem I'm having is random app closes. Just like Facebook and Google maps. Maps closed down several times today while in navigation for some reason. I have yet to figure out why it's happening.
