[Q] I want my old Gmail app back - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to get the old functionality of the Gmail app back? I can't stand this new way of doing things.
I don't *want* "Primary", "Social", "Promotions", "Updates", etc. I want all of my messages together. All the time. As a default.

Provide the specific version.

Settings
You can turn them off in the settings of the gmail app. Go to settings, go to the account you're concerned about, and uncheck all categories.

Version is 4.5-694836.
I unchecked the options that tmoore73 suggested. Seems to work so far. Thanks.
Edit: the settings came back. Weird. So problem still exists.
On the "desktop version" of Gmail, I have those options unchecked in "Configure Inbox"...

Calendar Syncing

Is there anyway to use any calendar related features on the Atrix without it syncing to Google? I've searched the internet for answers, searched the device for settings...and I always get the same result. Under Settings > Accounts > Other Accounts heading > "My Google Gmail account" the tick box next to Sync Calendar is UN-ticked. Yet, no matter what calendar app I use, eventually everything shows up online in Google calendars. So I go back and check the tick box and its still cleared. I put a test event online in Google calendars, and in less than a minute it's on my phone. Is there a setting I'm overlooking here?
thanks
Have you tried Calendar(app)>menu>more>calendars ?

Yes, but If I 'un-sync' it there, the whole calendar disappears from phone. I want to use the calendar on my phone, but not have it sync to Google. There's only 3 options there, but not a 'Visible, not synced' option. Only 'not synced, not visible'. The only way i can stop it from going to Google is turn on Airplane mode, but that's pretty pointless, and it just syncs as soon as I turn it off. It doesn't appear that sync settings under accounts do anything on my phone. This is my first Android device, so maybe that's just how it is?

PostRoot GMail AutoSync

Just a point I want to make for anyone out there who is as clueless as me:
After rooting, I found that GMail would not autosync. It instructed me to enable autosyncing in settings; however, the settings menu (B&N Style) didn't have the usual menus, and the settings accessible through GMail also didn't help. Eventually, I figured out that you need to click your e-mail in the top right-hand corner, go into menu, click account settings, click GMail under Manage Accounts, and check off the "Sync Gmail" box.
Maybe no one else needs this info, but I spent a while looking for it, so just in case.
nice find. i was using an external app to get to this menu (quick sync).
Is there a way to change the sync period? I'd like to load up some older messages onto my device.

When you are in the gmail app main screen you need to click your email address that is listed in the top right. From there you just follow the remainder of his steps posted above.

ah got it - thanks
Thank you thank you. I was worried it couldn't be done. I'm happy to be syncing gmail.
Is there any way to get the notification to show up? I get new mail but don't know it.
Have you enabled them in the gmail settings? Are you using an alternative launcher? I can see them using ADW.

Thanks for pointing this out. I knew I had seen the option before, but I couldn't remember where it was buried in the menus.
I used AnyCut to make a shortcut to Accounts & Sync. That gives me access to the settings to choose what I want to sync (reader, docs, contacts, mail, etc).

[Q] Account and Sync Settings

Does anyone know how to normally access the full "Account & Sync" settings page? Basically, if you go to Settings -> Data Manager and and untick Background Data, then try and access Market you get a message saying "Background Data Disabled - Market needs background data to be enabled"..
..if you click the enable button, you get taken to a rather different "Accounts & Sync Settings" page from the one you can access by going to Settings -> Accounts..
This "Full" page gives you options to enable/disable background data as well as set whether apps sync data automatically. There is then a "Manage Accounts" section further down the page which is identical to the one in Settings -> Accounts, except here you can actually enable disable Motorola Sync (which isn't available as an option on the other page).. additionally, if you have something like Facebook installed, you can click on that to get to its sync settings (just a username and password page, the same as when accessed via Settings -> Accounts) - except here, the settings hardware key gives you a "Sync Now" option which isn't available normally)
Am running a regular xt910 (not rooted, just as it comes)
Any help appreciated
Hi
Sorry but I have no answer for you, I just wanted to say your post helped me turn on auto-sync for my calendar.
Thanks

Issues with GMAIL Syncing

Hey everyone, new to the DNA (bought last Friday) and I'm totally a fan. The phone is awesome. However I'm having an issue where I'm having to manually go in and sync my Gmail to the phone. It doesn't automatically pull the Gmail down. I've made sure that sync is set to auto and that all the correct boxes are checked.
Currently stock running 4.1.1 (Software Number: 2.04.605.2 71ORD)
Gmail App Version: 4.2.1
Any help would be greatly apprciated.
Thanks,
Brocja01
That's pretty weird I don't have any problems with gmail sync. Do you maybe have an app installed that is controlling sync times ?
Edit: I'm also on stock btw.

I thought maybe it was the sync notification app you install for Nova, so I un-installed it and rebooted. Still not working. I'd hate to have re-install everything.
I think you covered this in your first post but have you actually gone into accounts under the normal android settings and made sure that your Gmail is supposed to sync?
It sounds stupid but it's somehow happened to me a few times where the Gmail sync box was unchecked.

Nope, it is definitely checked. I'm wondering if it is something with my account. My nexus 7 isn't syncing either.
Try going into settings and apps then clear the data for gmail and then open the app back up to let it log you back in.

If you suspect it your account (which is unlikely), check on your computer to see if it syncs.
I'm getting emails on my computer just fine. It is just my two devices that I'm not getting mail on. Factory resetting my phone this morning, will see if does anything.
I've also added my secondary gmail account to the device and that one syncs, if I send an email to both accounts, i get a notification for my secondary account but I don't get one for my primary account. Any thoughts? Would this be something to hit google up on? Is there a number I could call?
Did you try clearing the app data like I suggested? This has happened to me before on different devices and clearing the data always fixed it for me.
Sent from my HTC Droid DNA
Most definitely tried that, also factory reset the phone. Trying turning the auto sync on and off a few times and that didn't help either. It is the craziest thing. Which I could figure it out.
Obvious things to try that I'm sure you kick yourself if you forgot any one of them:
- Under the specific account settings:
- Notifications are indeed checked?
- Gmail sync is on
- Manage labels, Inbox and any other important labels are set correctly?
- Days of mail to sync are set to ~30 days?
I think those are probably an exhaustive list of on-phone options that would preclude syncing.
Yup, went through all those settings. Multiple times.
Did you hit the setting within the GMail app specifically?
I recently went through this because of the Snapdragon Battery Guru app. It shut off my GMail sync and I had a hell of a time finding out how to put it back on.
I had to open the Gmail app itself and go to:
Settings > [your email account] > Notifications (check box)
Settings > [your email account] > Gmail sync is ON
If that's not it, then I don't know what else could be the issue.
I am thinking that during initial setup you said NO to background syncing so just check this ..
Settings -> Accounts .. -> Auto Sync (SHould be ON)

definitely check that! i went a day without emails, and any notification. i thought it was weird, but didn't really pay much mind to it. then i noticed that i'd only get my whatsapp messages when i actually opened the app, i checked for autosync. somehow, it was off. it was working fine all along, and i have no idea how it got turned off. everything has been fine since, though, so definitely double check that

Facebook app missing Media and Contacts

Hi,
installed the Facebook app on my brand new Pixel 3, and want to mute the in-app sounds. I'm looking for an option in the app's Settings menu, but can't find anything.
Then I'm looking online for some support, and find out that this can be set up in the Settings menu, under Media and Contacts. Unfortunately, this option is not available in my app. Tried cleaning cache etc, reinstalling the app - still no change.
Anyone have the same problem? Is it Pixel/Pie-related? Or just something related to my FB account? Please help, it's very annoying to not be able to disable this app's sounds.
I've also reported the problem within the FB app, but there is no response/feedback.
I'm not on the Pixel 3 but I did notice this issue on my S9+ after I had to reinstall the app. The "Media and Contacts" settings menu where that was located is completely gone. I'm guessing maybe it was a mistake in the last update that rolled out? Regardless, it is VERY annoying that I can't turn off the app sounds. I have no idea why they are even turned on by default anyway.
