[Q] Need advice about broken Galaxy S4 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

OK so here is the deal - My Dad got his Galaxy S4 from Verizon and after two days of use he accidentally got tripped up and fell into the water. (My Dad does a lot of work around boats and one of the lines got underneath him and made him lose his balance) Here is the aftermath.

It was just in the water for only 10 seconds but the board looks like it was discovered on the titanic. Obviously the phone did not turn on.
I took the phone and as a last resort let it sit for a day in distilled water and dried it off.
Just for a laugh I put it back together and to my amazement the phone freaking turned on. I heard the Samsung jingle, I saw the menu and back buttons turn on and I was able to see it as a drive in my computer. The only thing that is not working is the screen.
I decided to take apart the phone again but only this time using a baking soda and water paste to take off the rest of the corrosion.
It worked out surprisingly well making the board look brand new but the screen still did not turn back on.
My question to you is do you think the screen is bad or is it something wrong with the board that is not allowing it to display. I want to get a new screen for the phone but I don't want to spend $200 on a new screen/digitizer to find out the phone still doesn't display properly. What do you think I should do?

Warranty replace that thing. It's been in water so it's already screwed. No matter what you do there will always be that damage.

Theres usually a 1 year warranty from Samsung. I don't know if it covers water damage. That's why I always get the Verizpn insurance or BestBuy or both. You can try amd add Verizon imsurance then wait a few days then do a claim.

Sadly the phone is not under warranty. Will verizon even look at it? I have no experience with this at all so I am completely clueless. Keep the ideas coming!

I think the phone has a 1yr manufacture warranty. It covers hardware issues like your sensors don't work and other stuff except water damage and broken screens.

The warrenty isn't valid because it was in water so get a du bag online du it using that or get a bowl of dry white rice put the phone battery and back cover seperetly inside let it dry for a few days.

[Q] Digitizer Replacement.

Hello buddies!
I was replacing my LCD screen that was dropped in th toaillet and apparently everything went fine. There was only one problem in the opening, I screwed with something I don`t know what was for (you'll see the image later). When I turned the phone on I get really happy for my screen was shinning again but the digitizer stoped working. Sometimes it works randomly, can't explain what happens, but try to realize that: the unlock screen sometimes works, but I press the upper of the phone, and its rare to work. I want you all to take a look and try to help me looking at this flat connector.. why is it for? Its related with the digitizer? I think its not, but I wanna know whats this since I screwed with it. Sorry for disturbing and thanks for help! Here is the picture:

look at the post on ifixit:http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/1 it seems like you should follow that and see if you can find what's wrong
I was following this article and a video on youtube.
As you see on image, i just bricked some flat cable below the front cam, but this cable is connected to digitizer... Eveything is working fine, just the digitizer is broken. I'm just asking if someone knows that the function of THIS part of flat connector, because eveything else is working, so i think the error of digitizer is not this.
if you look this image: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/JhXk4VIeX3CahwaY.medium you can see the yellow/brown part on metalic part, and if you see my image, you can see thats broken.
That part that looks broke in your pic may be the problem. Under where the black piece above it is where the digitizer is connected.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Yes, but if you take a look to left, by passing the fingerprint scanner, you can see that it's connected by a flat cable to motherboard... so i *think* the problem isn't here...
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that is probably the ground for something. Looks pretty similar to some of the copiers I used to work on.

Its look like the orange thing on bottom right of image. If it's a ground, i have bricked my digitizer? I think the problem is on the front panel, on top that have some flat connectors...
There is any way to fix these ground?
Obviously you've damaged the flex cable, but it's responsible for other components and not the touchscreen input.
You can get a replacement on ebay for $20 .
But I suggest replacing the digitizer first, then if there are still problems - you'll know it's the flex cable you need to replace.
The touchscreen was working before the lcd replacement, maybe i didn't connected anything well? Where it is connected? I have just screwed the ground connector that i have show to you on the photo, everything else is like before.
Also, i have take some pic of front panel and digitizer, maybe it can help someone identifies the problem.

Thanks.
You need a new digitizer. The ribbon cable and the glass aren't supposed to come apart. Looks like you pulled the glass off the front without removing the internal components first as well. Follow the take apart on the iFixit site.
Ok, thank you so... i bought the ditizier on ebay already, waiting it...
Some videos say to remove the digitizer by the front, others say to remove it by back, removing ALL components, what can leave me to brick something else, what to do?
The ground that i bricked is for headphones? its 30$ and the shipping is other 30$
To replace the digitizer you have to open the back of the device to remove almost all components. Follow the guide posted on the first page.
Also, did you try to restore PDS backup? Maybe it's not the digitizer after all...
Follow this guide (use your backed up PDS file, if you've made one).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131649
as for the flex cable you've damaged, it's $20 shipped on ebay.

Thank you,
My atrix have died, just wont turn on... no screen, no led, everything... just strange because i didnt modified anything.... maybe this ground cable made my cellphone die?
Just making me angry about atrix, it's so failing on everything, no hardware protection, just one accident and it's a big paper... thinking of buy an SG2... i'm for 6 weeks trying to fix it.
You mad at the atrix, your inability to fix it or do you think you should stop playing angry birds while you take your bread out the oven?
I voided my warranty.
I'm studying computer engineering, so i have basic understatement of fixing things... so or it's impossible to repair it without do anything that affect it, or i'm very dumb, what i do consider.... j/k
Seriosly, i didnt touch anything and it just died, so it's not my fault... must be something on it... i spend 800$ on it (Brazil), 120$ to lcd replacement, 35$ on digitizer, 30$ on tools, this cellphone is getting very expensive... just because of this my angry... i really doesn't want to leave atrix and go for GS2, i really like the fingerprint scanner, and the design of phone... and with bl unlocked... you know.
Im pretty sure the SG2 would malfunction if you dropped it in the toilet as well.
You know i watched some youtube videos last night. It seems phones can take some water. Almost. The videos showed phones in toilets and being submerged and still working for a bit. After watching those i think its feasible alot of phones can be saved with the usual tactics we hear. Like turning off right away, pulling battery immediately after that and then using preferred method to dry phone completely. Some phones dont make it or malfunction months later. I think op should use this as a lesson now and in the future. No more checking mail while checking the ceramic, or at least wear a wrist strap and if it happens again dry it immediately and turn on days later.
I voided my warranty.

This was dropped out of my pocket as I was getting out of the car... so not even from above waist height!
if you go to ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-Teardown/9391/2 you can see it mentions the fact that the screen is a fused unit, will be very hard to get an "unofficial" one.
Looks like a sammy only repair job

Pictures posted. can you view them? just got that photobucket account as I am away from home right now.
I have dropped my old SGS2 and SGS from higher than this and I got a light scratch... this has made me loose ALL faith in the build quality.
How come the front and back got damaged at the same time /?????????????????????
Yeah been looking into getting it fixed. Around 3-400$ for the screen then plus the camera housing... may as well buy new phone. Hence the appeal for bricked devices on here...
Saying that, I dropped mine also getting out of the car... It didn't even scratch, just dented the plastic on the side of the screen.
The worrying thing is, the screen is exactly flush with the bezel and so is not protected at all when it falls - you might have been unlucky on how it landed!

Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Maan... today it happened to me. Dropped out of my pocket when I got out of a cab. The screen is ok, just some tiny scratches at the top right (I can live with that), but the bezel looks like crap at the bottom left, that's probably where it hit the ground after the fall, then falling onto the screen where it got the scratches.
Does anyone know whether the bezel can be repaired or replaced? I guess I was lucky, but still... now I have a shiny new phone that's just a few days old... and it looks like... an idiot dropped it.
Just my Own story
I didn't have my SGS3 for 24 hours yet, and I have broken the screen. I use my phone as a alarm clock, the alarm rang in the morning after getting the phone waking me up, I hit the snooze button and went to put the phone back onto the bedside table, about 3-4 feet off the ground, I guess I slightly miss positioned in in my not so awake state, it fell to the ground, I hadn't thought too much about it as I had way worse falls with my SGS2 and never anything, but wen I picked my phone back up I could not believe that there was a big crack across the screen... I thought Gorilla glass 2 would of been much stronger. I'm very disappointed with the durability, I can live with it but every time I look at the unit it just reminds me of how easily that was broken, and it disappoints me all over again, I don't see a big reason to spend the ridiculous amount of money to replace the screen for the one crack across the screen, BUT it sure is a sore thumb.
Overall I'm extremely happy with my Samsung Galaxy SIII but VERY disappointed with the durability. I guess it is also my fault, I was so EXTREMELY satisfied and happy with my SGS2 that wen they released the S3 I just jumped on the occasion to get it and never waited for any reviews and customer testimonials as I would normally do wen considering buying anything, especially something at this price range. I will however learn from my mistake.

A (horrible) phone repair experience with AT&T / Samsung

Within a month of buying my white Note last March, I noticed a little hairline crack in the bezel around the volume rocker. I didn't pay it much attention because it wasn't very noticeable, but then move forward to July and I have 2 additional hairline cracks, one at the headphone jack and another at the power button. This led me to believe that there might be a manufacturer issue with the phone because I had only dropped it once in the entire 5 months since owning it, and I had a thick TPU case on it at the time and no damage was incurred.
I did some googling on the issue and found NUMEROUS threads on XDA relating to bezel crack issues with the high-end Samsung phones. For example, here is one related to the Note:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566356&page=2
I called AT&T and explained the issue and they told me that I could pay my deductible ($300 I think) and get a warranty replacement because they would consider it physical damage. No thanks. They told me to call Samsung. I called Samsung and they said they would repair the phone. This seemed like an admission to me that this was a manufacturer defect (but not reported to AT&T, thus no warranty replacement). I got my buddy to let me borrow his old phone while mine was out for repair. It took about three weeks, but I finally got it back, with the bezel replaced.
Now I didn't notice it right away, but one day I was swapping the battery and noticed the back cover was no longer longer staying snapped in at the middle tabs on the power button side (it wasn't like this before I sent it in). I called Samsung this past Monday (today is Wednesday) and told them of the problem and the guy suggested taking it down to an AT&T store and have the put one of the display phone's back cover on it to confirm if its just my cover.
I went down there about 2 hours ago and low and behold, it fit worse than mine. The guy even took a picture for me. I called Samsung back and told them of the situation and they gave me 3 options: 1) They could send me a replacement back cover, but they were currently out (huh?), 2) I could buy a replacement back cover for $10 and they would send it to me (I thought they were out?) and 3) I can send the phone back in for repair again.
Well options 1 & 2 are out because I just went to the AT&T store at their suggestion to see if it was an issue with the phone and not my battery cover. The supervisor on the phone even said that I shouldn't have sent my battery cover in during the first repair (which I accidentally did). I quickly pointed out that that had no bearing on the issue because the problem is with the frame of the phone! Option 3 sucks, but it would seem to be my only option.
So basically I am left with sending my phone back in for another 3+ weeks. I can't borrow the same phone that I used last time. Samsung won't issue a loaner. Called AT&T and they won't either. I hate to say it, but this may be my last Samsung purchase. I am not joining the Dark Side, but this whole experience has just soured me on Samsung.

ouch.....
I'm sorry to hear about that....
It makes you wonder what level of professionals are working with your high end device at the repair center....
I know that does'nt make things better, but they would'nt dare send it back a second time with "ANY" issues...would they ??
Best of luck to you Sir...i know how frustrating these issues can be......g
Wow - sorry for your pain!
On the lighter side... does anyone else find it funny that they apparently secure the display models at the store by attaching a lock to the $10, easily removed battery cover?

Update, here was their response to me sending a complaint of which the content was basically the same thing I posted in this Thread.
"Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that your device has hairline cracks of the bezel and due to this AT&T gave you a replacement phone and now the backcover does not fit to you phone. We sincerely apologize for your recent negative experience with our product"
Obviously they didn't even bother to read the entirety of the message. Typical.
My back cover never will quite seat right either, its just a poor design. If I play with it long enough (5 min or more) I usually can get it good enough for usage on the rare occasions I have it out of my case.

Why S3 is like cheap toy?

Hi.
I've been my S3 from 3 weeks. In the last week my phone was dropped to the floor from 1 meters!
SIII is **** not phone because digitizer is smashed now and I must pay for repair! (30% of value phone). What I should do now? Sell this phone? Or hide and don't use?!

My latest phone (SII and SI) was dropped few times and they was working without problem.
Same with my Note 2. Digitizer is intact but screen is cracked, one clean crack from top to bottom. Fell from less than 1/2 meter. Crap materials.

My fell more than a meter and they are working fine...
And I would sell it to a private store for a redicoulos price.

you just need to be more careful.. i dropped my phone from 1.5m nothing happened. BECAUSE HAD A CASE AND SCREEN PROTECTOR
I have screen protector too but I don't have CASE!
Even best quality case, cost much less than repair. Lesson learned? Don't safe money on casing....
I've dropped mine from the back of neck level and only a few scratches on the side where the plastic is. Screen has been fine since day one. No case and no screeen protector. I've dropped my phone 7 times now. Btw. I'm about 6 foot.

Do you think that a case can protect the screen from cracking? Especially, the phone fell to the floor display.
I have some lines when viewing pictures and a weird sound when watching online videos like youtube. Any help please?

That all depends upon one the case and two the angle of the fall .
Mine certainly has prevented damage .

Agree on this. I never use my phone (s) without case and screen protector. I don't care if it has gorilla glass or not. Another advantage of this is that my phone looks like new even after couple of months.

So if I have S3 I need wear case and screen protector:
Maybe if I have car I need case TOO!!

this is funny but iPhone5>S3!!!
S3 is a SH!T not phone!
I understand more that LCD will cost simple 50$ not 166 (530PLN!). Simple in Poland we earn 2000pln on month!
Listen mate....I'm going to put you straight on one point here, so you just accept a few facts.
YOU dropped your phone, not Samsung, not anyone here, accept it and deal with it and take responsibility for your actions......and YES, you do need a case for your car if you are a rubbish driver and keep crashing......see the similarity?
This is what it is made of materials that cell, S1 and S2, so many times I fell down (on the asphalt, the tiles) and it worked, and S3, and the time it collapsed!

Be more careful with your phone and if you think Samsung is s**t then buy something else!

Ok,, let me try again......
Every now and then I drop a mug....sometimes they break, sometimes they don't......when they don't I breath a sigh of relief.....when they do break, I kick myself for being so clumsy....I don't start ranting at the manufacturer or posting on forums, because I don't want to look like a complete idiot who refuses to take responsibility for his own actions or carelessness.....do you get it yet?
Mine fell from the second floor (about 10 meters high) and nothing happened. Got to say im lucky and i love my case
Oh and once i was getting out of the car and i forgor i put my phone on my lap and it fell onto the street and u know how asphalt is rough and yet my phone survived without a scratch.
Conclusion: buy a good quality case.
Hell my case doesnt even cover the screen and is just on sides. Guess im luckier than others.

I don't believe in cases, I've had three smartphones and all three are working to date without cases. My first smartphone was the HTC Wildfire and when i first got it i also bought a $10 Hard case for it, one day my friend accidentally kicked the phone out of my hand and on the floor, the case shattered but the phone was intact. Since then I dont use any kind of case on my phones. On the S3 i use an screenprotector and an clear skin protector for the back(because it scratches easily), I have dropped it several times from a height of 1m-1,5m and the phone doesent even have a scratch on it. Either my phone is stronger than yours in some way or I'm just lucky

Screen question - got water in my phone

Hi guys,
Long story short, took my phone to the pool, took the kids some pics and underwater video and the phone started to reboot... At first i thought it was by mistake, the 2nd time i started to look into it and saw the "can't read sim card" message. That was the sign that told me my baby have had issues. The screen got water, the cameras got foggy. I was able to shake some of the water out it through the ports.
I can't tell if it was a dirty flap or a fall it took 2 days ago and it hit the top right corner. Anyway, the phone is working now. However, the screen has water and it looks like blemishes.
Should i be worried or do something about it? Please see the pics, the screen looks awful [emoji20] [emoji17]

I'm sorry to say that these patches cannot be removed, I had several phone with water damage, and the screen always remains that what whatever I do to it .
Again, a warning for everyone, the whole Z series isn't water resistant, it might survive a very few seconds underwater, but not enough to take pictures and have fun with it. Better not put it in water at all, a water splatch accident is manageable and wouldn't inflict damage to the phone

Turn it off and put it in a bag of raw rice for atleast a couple of days.. Open all your flaps and then put it.. Don't turn it on until u r sure atleast most of that water is gone..
Thanks. Lesson learned.
It seems this it for my Z2. I did the pictures before, what i did different was to leave it in my side poket for about 30 seconds. It probably was 2 feet deep. They say 3 feet should be fine. Also the flaps get dirty from time to time, and it doesn't close well enough. I'd probably be back when there is no flap. The Z4 seems to be going in the right direction.

Had similar experience taking pictures and videos under water and after about an hour or two it was still fine. I only started seeing tiny dew on the main camera when the phone starts to heat.
The next day I have to open the back and clean the dew. It was just some three tiny dots but directly in front of the camera lens so taking a picture is blurry.
After cleaning it, covered it back and it's normal as before.
As for your own, water probably entered the front panel and that could affect the screen permanently and would probably need replacing the screen if you want it the way it was.
But I think you should let a good phone service person open it and see, it could be that the water is between the digitizer and the LCD. In that case could be cleaned.
