Hi, I received notification that 1.8.3 update has been downloaded and ready to install...I would like to store it and update later...
Does anyone know where the update is stored on the phone?
Edit: Disregard this question, found my answer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13022926&postcount=1

I couldnĀ“t find this folder using super manager
Hi, does anyone know where the OTA firmware updates are kept on the Galaxy S3?
I had a generic ROM on my phone which had an update which got downloaded. I did install it because the ROM wasn't the one I was after.
After finding the correct ROM and flashing it I see the downloaded update is still waiting to be installed from the previous ROM...
I know I could just wipe my phone but I'd rather not lose all my data at the moment.
This file must be stored somewhere but I can't seem to find it...
Any help would be appreciated

Cache partition.

Yeah it's root/cache/fota
But obviously you have to be Rooted to see it.
Thanks for the replies... I got root access back and installed Root Browser, found that fota location and it seems to be empty... see attached pic...
Any other ideas? Perhaps I need to reset a file that says there's an update downloaded and ready to install..?

They can download, the only question is weather they can install it or not. As for the OP, give the explorer superuser permissions. That should fix your prob.

I really don't have a battery problem with current D version, wonder if it's even with trying to get and risk losing root privileges.

Download ota rootkeeper group the Play store. Then protect root. That will save your root.

What about if you have the locked bl cwm recovery and linked apps with link2sd?
How would that effect installing the update?

You have to uninstall link2sd and cwm or the ota will not work.

You have to unlink the apps then uninstall link2sd. Once you update then just reinstall. But make sure you download ota rootkeeper and protect your root.

What's involved other than downloading the app and setting it up? Do I just update OTA and then have it work keeping root? Just want to check, my battery life is beyond bad.
Install ota rootkeeper, then hit the button that says protect root. Once the update is finished then you go back to ota rootkeeper and restore root.
Edit: I'd you have busybox don't forget to restore then uninstall busybox too.

Or you could try to force the ota by:
Reboot your phone
When it comes up go to system settings
Apps > all apps
Google services frameworks
Clear data then force stop the app
Then back out to systems settings
Go to about phone then system update
Then check for update
This may may not work but that's what we all did when the jb update came out.

If there is none for you yet, you cant get it. That simple however, you are able to flash a JB kdz using the offline flash method. Hope it helps

You don't have to get it back to stock (you can keep root if you want), but you need to have all unmodified stock apps. Those stock apps can be disabled, but should not have been removed.
If you remember which stock apps you have removed, you can try to ask for them here from people who hasn't updated yet (or extract from some backup people made). You can look at this file /system/cache/recovery/last_log to see the error / missing apps at the end.
But I think the easy way you should go to update is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359044
Yeah that's what I meant

There is no /system/cache. You have to find /cache/recovery/last_log.

I am on stock 4.0.4 with rooted and unlocked with twrp installed with Freegee ...
Now i want to upgrade to 4.1.2 and i have downloaded file like this
LGE970AT-01-V20j-310-410-MAR-08-2013.zip and it's inside is .tot file if i extracte so can i use this file with LGNPST and if yes which file
should i use .zip or .tot one

The following is straight from carrett's guide: Obtain the following files: AutoLGNPST-tSilenzio.zip (available on IRC), and the firmware. Unzip AutoLGNPST-tSilenzio.zip and follow the instructions in "READ ME FIRST.txt" (mad props to tSilenzio for automating this process).
Once you download and install LGNPST there should be a READ ME FIRST text file that contains all the instructions needed to use LGNPST. I'm going by memory but I believe you rename the .tot file to .bin and then select that in LGNPST.

Extract the .tot from the zip file. Then rename the .tot to .bin. That should be about it. Then just select the .bin (previously the tot file) and flash with LGNPST.
