Screen is dead. Best way to get replacement/warranty info? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

My LCD screen went dead, seems like there have been a few reports of "black screen of death."
I purchased it from a verizon store less than 90 days ago. Whats my best bet on getting a replacement? I did not do the warranty program...

Should be under warranty for a year shouldn't it. Take it back to the store.

I chatted with samsung who said to send it in for repairs and if its determined its my fault they will charge me. I feel like verizon will just do the same?
If the screen was damaged by water can I buy a phone with a cracked screen and put my glass in it?

There's a water detection sticker under the battery. If it isn't pink, there shouldn't be a problem getting it exchanged at a Verizon store. As long as there is no physical damage (cracked or broken screen) it should be a slam dunk. I would think Samsung would scrutinize the phone more closely and be much slower getting you a replacement.

Glad to hear you will be back in business with a new phone.
It's unfortunate though, if you were on MDK root + recovery and won't have that, but a phone is the most important thing so that's awesome.

Has root been blocked by some update or something? Or will I just have to go through the process all over again?

[Q] Broken AMOLED- Warranty Concerns

Hi XDA!
I've been reading bits through the forum for a little while, and used a few of the guides available on here to root my S2, as well as flash litening rom onto it.
for what its worth I'll try and give as much detail as possible, I was originally using MIUI, and then using CWM swapped to Litening Rom.
A few nights ago I dropped my S2, it landed on the top right corner and I could see a small crack across the display and it won't come on, and first it was blue lines and I could see some of the display through it, but now it stays black, the touchscreen did work for a while, but I've tried it now and nothing.
basically its done... I'm on the Optus $59 Plan and am going to send it in for repairs.
I have no backup from when I got the Phone, of the original software etc
So I need to restore it for repair.... I ordered the usb jig on monday so waiting for that to come in ; EDIT: No Outside links for a new user (Ebay Link to USB Jig)
So once I get that in, I need to go back to whatever is good for repairs.
What I am asking for:
links to appropriate files needed to get me to warranty standards.
basically some help to do it, I don't know much on the whole rooting and flashing scene, and probably jumped a bit ahead of myself with this, and now I'm stuck trying to fix it with no Display.... learned my lesson
I hope this is adequate, any further info that might be needed I would be happy to give
Thanks For Your Time!
Sean
Rotten luck!!!
If you can turn on your phone, then try using ODIN to flash a stock kernel.
As it shows on your PC if it's in contact with the phone.
Search forum's for further info.
Hope this helps

You dropped and broke your phone and you think that Samsung/your operator are going to repair it under warranty? Good luck.
Warranty Card said:
The warranty is not applicable in cases other than defects in material design and workmanship. The warranty does not cover the following:
Periodic checks, maintenance, repair and replacement of parts due to normal wear and tear.
Abuse or misuse, including but not solely limited to the failure to use this product for its normal purposes or in accordance with Samsung's instructions for usage and maintenance.

Yes, you need stock kernel and stock firmware.
To be honest i doubt they'll care, the phone was dropped and the screen was broken, this is the reason for the repair. What firmware the phone is running is surely irrelevant it's a hardware problem not software related???????

[Q] Root causes digitizer failure?

My phone began having issues with touch behavior. It has over time gotten worse to the point where my phone seems to have a mind of its own. I took it in to a sprint repair center because I have read that the digitizer is a common failure with the Evo 3D. Anyway the repair guy told me that the issue was because I am rooted, that root corrupts files necessary for correct touch input. I have never herd this before and wanted to ask if anyone can either confirm or deny this. I would like to specifically read some developers perspective on this.

Completely untrue. Rooting voids warranty and so that's why he came up with that excuse. Just unroot (this guide is good), and then take it to the sprint store again and don't say anything about root. they should give either a replacement or replace the digitizer. Then you can just root the new phone or root again.
Well the surprising thing is he gave the phone back to me and said he had ordered a replacement phone and that they'd call me when it arrived. This is why I asked, because I wanted to know whether to root my new phone when it came in.
He gave the phone back to you and ordered you a new one at no cost to you because that's just a trick reps play..
Root had no effect on screen wear and tear or digitizer failure..

This just goes to show that you should read and research before modifying your device. No root has no effect on hardware.

I started having serious screen errors after flashing the VM firmware. I tried the fix, and it didn't work for me. Looking at a multi-touch test, it's showing four touch points in the middle when I'm only touching it once at the top.

Unfortunately that's what happens when people flash hacked/leaked firmware. Rooting itself doesn't cause hardware problems, but flashing things like this does. Hopefully someone will come up with a fix to fully reverse it. If not, hopefully you have insurance.

They could bill you for service w/out warranty but only if you tell them to.
Sometimes they say things like that because they don't want to go through the hassle of ordering a new phone for you, especially since they don't earn any commission for that kind of help.
Also, technically if you are rooted your warranty IS voided, even though a lot of the time hardware problems aren't related to root at all. I guess what I'm trying to say is they technically aren't aloud to replace a non-warrantied item so they make up a reason why they can't in order to keep the customer at least somewhat understanding.

Yup, my impatience screwed me over. I'm probably gonna end up bricking it.
In relation to the thread, rooting doesn't do anything. So yeah, you got got.
Yea, I had the same problem and the store said the same thing. Like others said, it's untrue. The stores will try to avoid the issue but phones should be replaced.

New Policy For Best Buy's Extended Warranty

Hey guys/gals,
Just thought I would share this with everyone. Best Buy has a new policy with their warranty for phones (at least the ones by me do).
You no longer have to ship your phone in for service. All you do is go to the store, tell them your problem, they ship a new phone (the last couple I had replaced arrived in less than 36 hours), and you bring your phone in when the new/re-manufactured one arrives.
This is great if you have a problem where your current phone still works. You don't have to dig out an old phone, or rent a POS loaner phone from BBY, but you can still do all of those things if your phone is unusable.
Like I said just though I would share this info. I think BBY keeps making their protection policies better and better.
Hope this has helped someone!
I will put this to the test this weekend!!! Good find!!!

This is what they did for me when I needed a replacement about six months ago.
They did not offer it to me until I spoke with the manager because i didn't want to be without a phone for a few days or use one of their loaner phones.

about time they changed it, I canx my 3x black ties just because of this
Best buy insurance, ftw. I will never buy another phone anywhere else. Im on my 3rd lte and i got the lte free because they had no more 3d's. They ask basic questions about what happened and then ship it out. I got my last replacement in 2 days. Took it in on a Monday at 7pm and got my replacement on Wednesday at 7pm.
Awesome. I love black tie (bb). I had to replace due to malfunctions and no questions or hassles in fact the reason I signed up for black tie was the guy indicated I would never have to send anything in and that I would get a new replacement directly from the store which they did. I even had the guy write and confirm that on my sales receipt because I didn't believe him.

Thank you all for the info. I won't be going to Sprint stores anymore. BB sounds like the way to go now. Back when I worked there it definitely wasn't but a lot has changed since then. Good to know.
My EVO has developed a problem where I'm getting all sorts of crazy noise on the screen. Definitely a hardware problem as it even has problems with the HTC logo on boot. I'm currently S-OFF with the latest CM release installed. Do I need to unroot and restore back to Sense before I take the phone into Best Buy, or do they not care?
Thanks for the help and all the useful info!!

Yeah, my store is the same way, but I doubt every store is the same. To be safe I would backup, flash a stock rom, bring it in and show them the problem, then recover until your "new" phone gets in and the re-flash a stock rom when you bring it back.
I doubt they'd care, but this should cover your a$$ either way.

Best buy covers software though right? So why would it matter? There's nothing saying they don't cover rooted devices. I even asked the manager when i got my 3d and he said if i bricked it I'm covered. So why flash back to stock? Unless youre having issues that could be rom/kernel related of course.. then youll obviously want to flash to something else to make sure its not the rom and then go back to stock to show them its happeneing on there also.

Because it is better to be safe than sorry. If you read the terms and conditions, they don't list software as covered. They could deny coverage if they wanted to. Every store is not the same, but if you hand them a phone that is obviously not stock, there is more of a chance of them questioning it. I don't think they would, but it takes me 2 minutes to flash back to stock, so I'd rather avoid a potential headache. I'm getting a "new" phone anyway, so what do I care if I leave cm10 on my old one. Plus, it's a good way to wipe your phone.
Personally, if I were a store employee and someone brought me a "bricked" phone that I could prove was rooted, I wouldn't cover them. If you bricked your phone, that's your fault. Best Buy or any other business shouldn't subsidize your hobby, because you didn't know what you were doing. That makes the development community look bad. Now if it were a problem that was obviously not caused by root, I would look the other way.
I'm currently in this situation where my screen is cracked. I too was wondering if I needed to unroot before I had them ship the phone out for repair. What stock ROM does everyone suggest?

If the screen is so trashed you can't do anything, Odin flash the stock no root image in download mode. I've accidentally sent in a rooted devicefor replacement (Bionic), and they didn't say anything. But best to be careful.

Defective s4

Very sad my launch day s4 with custom firmware has taken a crap on me. The handset speaker has crapped out and no sound is coming out at all. I didnt drop it or get it wet it just went out and I believe it's still under manufacturer warranty. Will I have to send it to Samsung or can I take it directly to Verizon? If I have to send it to Samsung I would almost rather file an insurance claim so I wasn't out my phone for 3 or 4 days. Thanks guys.

Not completely understanding your post. Are you saying you have loaded a custom ROM? If you did any customization to the phone, it does technically violate the warranty and VErizon doesn't have to honor it if they see it. Why people try to return the phone to original state of no rooting, no custom recovery and stock base.

I didnt ask how to return it to stock. I could understand your frustration if I had bricked it and am trying to remove root so they'd take it back, but that's not the case. My speaker failed and it was not caused by the rom. For the rest of this thread let's pretend my phone is completely stock. All I was asking if Verizon will swap it out or if I have to send it back to Samsung for warranty purposes.

when ME7 was first sent OTA I let it update not realizing what was going to happen. I immediately called VZW and said my battery was getting really hot when I was charging the phone, they overnighted me a refurb (with MDK). I think if it's within a year you can go into the store (or by phone) and they should change it out for you with a refurb. Do you pay for the monthly extended warranty service?

I just had to return my S4 to Samsung for a defective proximity sensor. I set it all up through the online chat on Samsung's website. After verifying my phone was still under warranty, they emailed me a shipping label and everything at no cost to me. So if Verizon won't hook you up at least Samsung will. Good luck with your return, just really sucks that now you will lose that sweet unlocked bootloader for no fault of yours.
