[Q] Phone Switching Between UMTS and HSDPA - HTC Amaze 4G

Asit says in the title. This constant change between the two network types causes data to be slow and timeout quite a lot as well as drain battery. Even watching low quality youtube videos is impossible because of the switching. I'm on the current CM10.1 build right now. Is there anyway I can just stick to one network type instead of it switching every second? I've tried going into phone information and set it to gsm only, wcdma preferred, etc. But it also just goes back to gsm auto (prl). And finally the weird thing is that there will be moments of time where data can be consistent (for like 5 minutes) and then it'll revert back to being slow.
Ive read in older posts (early 2012) that going to build.prop and changing ro.ril.hsxpa or somethinf like that helps. I can't find that so I'm wondering if theres another way to keep it at UMTS or HSDPA and NOT have it switch.
I'm on the Wind Mobile Network right now with baseband 1.15 if that helps. (I'm also a noob who can just flash stuff and new to this phone so go essy on me ^_^)

They are the same network. The phone just switches from hsdpa to umts when data is not in use to save battery. But hsdpa+ is just a higher speed version of umts, just like edge is a higher speed form of gprs. So That is not what is causing the time outs. It's probably just had network where you are. Mine switches between umts and hsdpa+ all the time, and my connection never times out.

Yes I know they're supposed to switch but that's the thing; even in standby it keeps switching constantly almost every other second causing battery drain. And the reasn why I'd prefer just hsdpa is that data is consistent on it whereas umts just times out on me almost everytime or rather when the two switch. Is this just a network issue?

I think it is just a network issue, as with tmobile as soon as the phone calls for data, it goes to hspa and there is not lag when it switches.

I tried everything I can and data is still inconsistent. I'll try testing out different baseband versions to see if that does something but unfortunately, it could be a hardware issue with the radio :/ Thanks for the help.

Hey CaffeineGiant, did you try the latest OTA radio.zip? Someone named jordin posted it in a bunch of threads a while back. If you rename it to PH85IMG it could flash in bootloader and help!

Are you talking about the 1.15 version, cuz I've already done that and the problem persists.
Quick question, I've opened up BetterBatteryStats and over a course of 7 1/2 hours idle, under partial wakelocks, google checkin service has had 967 counts, alarm manager 723 and a couple days ago RILJ and sdio dmux were up there. The difference between then and now is that I've had wifi. Is that anyway related? I don't wanna give up hope on this phone because I like it despite its poor battery life and this radio

I think you should download Greenify and hibernate your apps. That saves tons of battery. It looks like you're getting wakelocks which are causing the drain.

Fixing Signal Issues (3G/H Switching)

Hi
Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I am in a good area for signal and with previous phones am consistently on H. With my S2 it frequently switches between 3G and H even if it stays in the same spot. It will do it every few minutes.
This is causing havok when I try and tether and my Transformer and laptop keep getting signal interruptions.
Does anyone have a fix? I have Fast Dormancy disabled and I'm aware there may be some other engineer menus that have signal settings in that might work?
Thanks
Paul

Interesting.. And I thought it was just my network vodafone
Mine also switches between G/H/H+ all within 5 secs... yeah 5 seconds and it is kinda annoying.
Are you on GIFFGAFF as stated on you profile? or other network? cause I thought if might have do to something with vodafone..
Otherwise may be its something to do with the hardware settings, I too would like to know the answer
I've kept mine to use WCMA all the times...

Yes, I'm on giffgaff.
Glad its not just me. Maybe the antenna is a little too sensitive.
Anyone know the secret code to get to the GSM/UTMS bits?

Now, for me wouldn't 3G and H/H+ both be considered as WCDMA under Mobile Network Settings? G and E would be GSM right?
If that is the case, staying on WCDMA wouldn't fix the problem.

Your phone shouldn't lock onto a H/H+ signal unless it has started to download data. That's how the protocol works.
If your phone is sitting idle it should be on 3G.
You should only get H/H+ when your phone is actively downloading.

No problems to report in Amsterdam.
I'm biking through the whole city to get to work, no disconnects using TuneIn or Google Music. Provider is Vodafone, HSDPA+ all along the way.
Its Android issue
Think when iPhone, Windows phones have not had this issue, wat else other than Android. I have tried 3 different handsets. 3 different network - 3, O2 and Vodaphone. All has same problem. Android is the only thing common. I have been scouring the internet and posted everwhere possible since Dec 2010 from when I became Android user. There is no solution. Everone seems busy making their own Android versions and apps. Result there is no basic data and voice stability on Android. Have been relying on my decade old treo to receive n make important calls. Wonder where this is going. My heart n soul seems to sway to the iPhone lately. Atleast wat they give works well.
Its Android issue
BTW those config settings are useless too. I have even used the code to get into hidden menu and change config but no use. It's the same issue. From H to 3g and from G to E I gsm.
Sorry for the question, but whats the problem with switching? I have the same thing but is not a problem for me.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Nobody should get worried about that switching, THIS IS NORMAL!
H/H+ is an high speed 3G protocol.
Basically:
1. 3G means DL 384 Kbps tops. The modem is under 3G signal most of the time. Whenever something on your phone starts checking/d-loading it communicates at THE BEGINNING under 3G protocol. Also, long ping time> 210 ms.
2. HSDPA max 14 Mbps/HSDPA+ can go as high as 42 Mbps ( topped only by cell tower). If there's need for large packet data or shorter ping time, IT AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES TO H/H+(IF AVAIL). Hsdpa consumes more power and it's a communication protocol. When connected under H/H+ error correction bits are transmitted along data stream. It's like switching your home wifi on b/g/n. ...or like the automatic gearbox going to overdrive.
If you see a lot of this switching it means there's a lot of downloading/uploading going on.
I have it switching too between 3g and h on o2 and its making the internet so unstable you cannot do anything at all. This is certain not normal as the switch happens every second and continues to do so until phone is off
Mine is also switching to 3G once connection is idle for about 3 seconds. So far no problem and it uses less power than my SGS1 for browsing since my SGS1 doesn't switch to 3G when idle.
Mine is no problem between this signal switching, check your area or check your country maybe too much communication devices there so that's why it is distorted. Just use the common carrier with plenty of cell sites for a good signal of your phone.
What do i need to dial to fix it to 3g only from 2g?

[Q] 3G to H bouncing, is it a radio problem?

Hi everyone,
I've got a retail, international Atrix (bought from Expansys) that came with Android 2.2.2. Now it is unlocked and I installed Cyanogenmod on it (therefore, Android 2.3.7).
I am located in Italy.
The Radio I installed is Orange France N_01.100.00R, that appears to be the best one for Intl. users with Gingerbread.
When I am on the home screen, is it normal to see the 3G icon becoming H and coming back to 3G within a couple of seconds?
When I use an application requiring Internet (e.g. Google Maps, Browser, ..), the icon switches to H and appears to stay in that state. When the application does not need the connection anymore (e.g. when the web page has been loaded), the icon flips back to 3G.
Is this a normal behavoir, or is this a Radio problem?
Yes it's normal for it to toggle between 3G & H, the H means high speed data connection, does it on my UK Orange Atrix all the time

Can you elaborate? I think I have OPs problem as well. The "toggling" is constant. Like every half second it will switch from 3g to h, while standing in the same area. Its not like a toggle that happens every 20 minutes as we move from one cell tower to another. You get that too?

I meant the same thing, the bouncing randomly happens in an interval between about a half second and less than ten seconds

More than likely you are in a fringe coverage area. Really the only way that I can see you improving this issue even more is flashing a different radio to your phone, but that's not even a guarantee that it will truly fix things. It could also make things worse.
For what it is my phone switches from H to Edge in my own home at different points during the day. I've tried forcing my phone in 3G only, but all that did was drain my battery faster.
Bottom line - you could change the radio, or try to get used to it...

My phone keeps changing back and forth from H+ to 3G

Does anyone else have this problem or is this normal?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
it will only change to H+ when it is using data (depending on what ROM you are on). this is a feature that saves battery. If it keeps changing, your phone may be using data for apps or whatever.
Are you on the Stock gingerbread that came with the phone? need a little more info to really see if anything is wrong.
It will do this if you have background data and auto sync checked in your settings. Others will chime in and ask if your completely stock or what rom and kernel you're running.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
From what I have read, correct me if I'm wrong, this is due to custom ICS ROMs reporting you're data connection directly whereas stock GB wouldn't update as frequently.
Clay

I have seen this with all rome that i have used, stock kk6, also i have tried aokp and mystic rom as well as shostock which i'm running now. It does not seem to have any effect on the data performance but i'm just curious if this is something anyone has seen before with this phone. I am on straight talk though if that means anything however I do have an iPhone which i use also so that phone displays 4g at all times.

Question has been answered in a post above. It changes when data is being transferred.
personally i think it uses the h+ to get data faster then drops to 3g to maintain also saves battery like they said its nothing to worry about its normal

It is a battery thing but it will never use 3g for data unless there is no 4g network around. If our phones were on 4g all the time our battery would be dead in no time so it drops to 3g when its idle.
The actual ATTs roms keep the 4g symbol on constantly probably for marketing reasons. The switching between 3g/4g is how a rom really works, ATT just decided to hide it so they can look cooler with the "always on 4g" thing. That's my guess anyways.

What? For saving battery?
Wouldnt that double the use of battery power because the radio keeps switching from 3G to H+? correct me if im wrong because i thought staying at a constant Connection(IE:3G or EDGE) would be better on battery instead of it switching constantly
saw this link and i took in consideration that the tip for locking onto 3G would help

Network Issues at Work

I am having an odd problem with my GS4 and I'm open to any suggestions. Everywhere else except for work I have no problems with my network, however at my office in downtown SF I get horrible network performance despite being on 4G. According to Status, my signal strength is -91 dBm 49 asu, but I can't load any pages without them timing out. What's odd is my VZW Blackberry Bold performs fine on 3G in the same place. My previous phone, an HTC Thunderbolt, had some 4G issues at my office, but I was always able to get it to work by forcing it into Airplane mode then back to 4G (this process doesn't help on my GS4). Does anyone have ideas or suggestions? Is there a way to force the phone into 3G only? I am still on the launch ROM and radio at this point.
It's a data capacity issue, you are probably only getting 1 or 2 towers at work instead of the usual 5, the airplane mode trick is probably giving you one more tower. Just tell Verizon, they'll flag your area and either increase capacity to the towers you get or increase signal penetration/range on the ones you don't

Signal drop out issues - Please help

Good day all!
I've been experiencing some issues since I got my C6806 3 weeks ago. I live in Toronto and my provider is Rogers. The phone itself is unlocked and is just running the stock software which is 4.2.2, build # 14.1.B.2.257
Ever since I got the phone I've had a periodic issue where the phone signal strength will just completely die out to 0 bars, then it'll come back to full bars about 30 seconds later. It happens whether I'm home or out on the road. It happens if I'm using LTE bands or 3G or HSPA. It also happens whether I've got wifi on or off.
Any troubleshooting steps you could suggest?
Thanks in advance!

It seems to happen on a frequent basis. At least a couple of times a day when I happen to be paying attention to my phone.
I've never actually used stamina mode, and it's always been off.
How's LTE and HSPA where you are? If the signal is poor it'll switch over to the next thing on ladder. If you have a poor LTE signal it'll jump down to HSPA, and if you have a poor signal on that one it'll jump down to EDGE. It's the same dance if you walk into an area where there is good LTE coverage. It jump up from EDGE or HSPA to LTE, and iin all cases when it switches, you'll notice a couple of seconds where it connects to the new frequency (by having zero signal). That's why I disable LTE when I know I'm going to be in an area with poor LTE signal for a long period of time.
Not saying that this is your problem, but try only using EDGE for a couple of hours and see if it happens again.

LTE and HSPA coverage by Rogers in Toronto is great overall. I don't really use the LTE APN because it seems to suck up battery life immensely. I just keep it in the normal APN that seems to switch randomly between HSPA and 3G. The issue can occur if I'm just sitting still in a spot. I'm using it, and all of a sudden the signal just cuts out for about 30 seconds and comes back. Both before and after the incident I am usually at full bars.
I'm unsure of what EDGE is. The only things I control are the APNs I obtained from Rogers - one is just the standard one that gives me 3G and HSPA, and the other is LTE.
Dunno what else I can really do. I doubt it's my provider so it's gotta be the phone. Any other real troubleshooting steps to try, or should I just get this to Sony?

EDGE is 2G. so turn off LTE and HSPA+ and see if it does it.
I don't have the LTE equipped phone so I'm not sure if these hardware functions will switch on and off randomly.
It sounds like your hardware is switching between 4g and 3g. problem is that both wont work simultaneously, so you would get this drop off. solution is that build prop edit i gave you.
But then you'd have 4g on all the time. so if you don't want that then turn it off manually.
Try these.
Edit your build.prop file.
(do you know how to do this??)
and insert these.

You'll still have mobile data, but it will be SLOW. I think the top speed is around 400KB/sec, but you'll only use this to check if your signal is more stable without 3G/4G.
Tip: If you want to save battery and you aren't the type that uses a lot of mobile data, use EDGE (the thing i'm currently writing about). 4G uses a lot of juice.

Just gotta say holy crap this Edge thing is SO slow. Even just loading icons on Google Plus or Youtube searches takes forever. A mobile speed test is showing about 133 kbps...
Damn... gotta come up with a better solution that doesn't require having slow as shyte data access
I'm trying WCDMA only to see how this might work. At least the speeds are more tolerable there.

I've even tried downloading a few other messaging apps from the Play store, and they can't seem to view or send photos either. Damned weird if you ask me.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just want to say that I'm having the exact same issue. I thought it might have occurred after I installed a custom room but I'm now back on stock and still experiencing 4 bars immediately dropping to no service and then going back to 3 or 4 bars before slowly dropping back to zero. I figured it could be LTE, so I experimented with all settings under mobile networks to no avail. I try the same Sim in my note 2 in the same location and I have no issues. I believe this is an issue with the antenna or a general hardware fault. My phone is the c6806, originally on Bell but being used on Telus. I have already contacted Sony but they are giving me the runaround
Anyone know how the warranty is handled in Canada? Anyone else have this problem?
Signal issues
Sorry I'm restarting this thread one more time.. But anyone figure out a fix? I'm having the same problem on a brand new phone... I had the same phone before I lost it. Got it again but these signal dropping issues now . Never had these on my previous cc6806
