[Q] galaxy s3 gti9300 freezing - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks. Having a real issue with this. My s3 keeps freezing at random intervals for anywhere up to 25-30 mins. Getting really annoying now and I hope someone can help me stop it from happening. Recently rooted and flashed sentinel rom on but thought was that so flashed official touchwiz back on but still happening!
Thanks
Paul

Go and search in the general forum for the freezing thread. There are a couple of things to try before applying for a warranty repair.

This is most likely sectors in eMMC going bad. My advice would be to have at least 4GB free on internal SD at all times. Backup weekly to external SD. Avoid writing to internal SD as much as possible. (also be 100% certain that you have multiple EFS backups). If you are using a dual-boot kernel - try to do most of your extensive work in a ROM that you install as second (and keep 1st as emergency backup).

Thanks for the advice. Is there a fix for this? My internal storage is already below 4gb and nearly everything writes to the sd card (32gb).

I doubt - that aging is "normal" with any flash memory (but much less likely with high-end SLC vs low-cost MLC; I am also EXTREMELY curious if the same problems are seen on the 32GB or 64GB versions of the phone - but that could just apparent be since on those you will always have huge amounts of free flash). It was extra-bad with the buggy SDS firmware in the eMMC, but once you do have enough free space the huge lag when multiple-sector relocation takes place becomes far, far less obvious. There are mentions of some tools to improve things but I doubt that anything can do miracles. If the phone is still under warranty from a serious vendor and it dies you will most likely get a replacement.

Its on warrenty until mid sept. I might just clear the binary count and bring it to the o2 store to send off.

Why? Is it a refurb? EU has 2 years warranty, so April-May 2014 should be when the first non-refurb units start losing warranty

Not a refurb. I thought was a one year warranty. Will have to bring it in to them once I reset the binary count

UK SOGA warranty from the vendor usually one year. Samsung offer a 24 month limited warranty on top of that .

Internal memory extraction

My GSII is totally broken. It can't even connect to the boot cable.
Anyways
I only need a way to reach the internal memory becausei got some VERY IMPORTANT info and pictures that I need to extract.
HOW CAN I DO IT?
can I extract the hardware?
Wow
Really wow
No one even bothers to give me a answer.
I've had 2 questions and I never got an answer for any of them. What a support. What a support.

First off, understand the fact that you aren't the center of the universe, nor everyone's attention.Help will come eventually.Be patient next time.It can even take days for a proper answer to come.
So,to extract the internal memory is easy. You just have to disassemble the phone and find the "NAND" labeled chip(or so I think, but you'll probably be able to find it).Problem is that, normally,it'll be glued to the mainboard. If you remove it,you destroy any chance of recovering the whole phone.Bigger problem is that, even if you extract it ok,you don't have any equipment that will be able to read it.It's not an SD card that you stick in a reader and do your thing.
So,your best bet is to send the phone for repair and explicitly state that you want your files intact.Ask them to not repair it if they can't preserve your files.
That's all the help I can give you.I hope someone can help more.
Even though you were a bit rough but it's MUCH better than ignoring
I know I'm not Thee priority, but I just had a trip to Turkey and have ALL my pictures in my GS2. I'm nervous and you can see why.
As you can see I live in Iraq and obviously there is no proper service around here and I'm the biggest hope I got.
Either I wait until I go for another trip and take the phone with me to fix it there or to bother you guys here, and I'm sorry for that

You just need to be patient man.Sorry if I offended you,it wasn't my intention. What I told you applies to everyone around here, not to you explicitly.
Anyway, your best bet is indeed to keep the phone safe until you can get proper service.
But in case someone can offer you better help, could you tell us what exactly happened to the phone?

I had CriskeloRom 32 on my phone and nothing was wrong. I was checking websites while thephone was plugged in to a charger. Suddenly my phone died, the screen went black and didn't turn on. I tried to but it in recovery & downloading mode but it never did. Went to a repairing store they used the boot cable but it didn't even get connected.
The best guess is some hardware thing is broken inside.
My bad luck is I had the 16GB external memory filled with HD videos and I was using the internal memory for the camera. The best moments of my life in antalya/ Turkey with my wife and daughter is saved in this memory.
I was waiting for Galaxy Nexus (I actually ordered one) but after this I'm really afraid of internal memory only phones.
Now I use Galaxy Note

Well,I keep my important files in the external SD,so I avoid possible problems.
Sounds like something got fried inside your phone.Damn thing goes really hot when charging sometimes. And Iraq's hot climate must have finished it off.
So,I'd wait for someone more experienced than me to say something on the topic.I think that what I said still applies though.Samsung service maybe is your only hope...

[Q] Recover internal Memory date from a Dead Phone

i had (still have) a Galaxy s II. it died COMPLETELY, i have important data inside the internal memory.
now i use a Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus, both have internal Memory, even though with my NOTE i don't save important Date in internal memory BUT i have no choice with my beloved Galaxy Nexus.
i started this thread to gather any useful information regarding the internal memory and how to recover it, For me and many people with this fear.
there are accidents that will kill the phone for good, like dropping it the water or falling and braking.
PLEASE don't offer the service center.

COMPLETELY DEAD. it won't go to Recovery nor Downloading mode NOR connects to boot cable.
and the question is if the phone doesn't work at all what should we do?
i'm really afraid of using Galaxy Nexus because i don't know what to do if my phone dies (like Falling and breaking, the way it doen't turn on) and it's not like taking the memory out of the phone like an SD card.

You didn't want to hear it but the only option (to fix it) is to carry it in under warranty. Unless you want an expensive paperweight .

The data can't be recovered if the device is not fixed (especially since it's not on an SD card and you cannot boot into recovery).
Even if you take it to a repair center there is no promise your data wont be wiped in the process. Above poster is right. If it is dead then the info is dead as well.

Is not that truly dead, if it is too important as he says, he can take the chip and send it to the company so they can take the information out.
OP, if it is too important take my suggestion but It will cost a lot of money.
Thanks for all and God bless you.

Galaxy S3 suddenly died... any way of recovering pics?

Hi everyone,
I'm one of those "lucky" guys whose Galaxy S3 was affected by a sudden and unexplained death.
Despite having a microSD card i had kept around 700 photos in the internal memory, since I didn't think my phone was gonna commit suicide like it did 4 days ago. Since they told me at Samsung technical service that they're gonna probably have to replace the mainboard, that means everything stored in the internal memory will be lost.
Thing is a had performed a CWM backup days before the "incident" so I'm wondering that if when a get the phone repaired from Samsung and root it again, then perform a CWM restore...that would restore my pics. I've read equivocal things looking up Google, some people say CWM (Nandroid) doesnt backup anything from the internal sdcard, others say it backs ur photos up too....
Can anybody shed some light on this, please?

Thanks for answering chubby. I stored my CWM backups in my external microSD card so I'd able to access that data again once rooted. Definitely no chance at all of the pics being somewhere there in the backup?

Ok, cheers mate. I'm really gutted too, it's incredible that such an expensive phone comes with faulty hardware like this.
I think I'm gonna contact Samsung again asking for a compensation or something like that, they should pay up for 3 weeks without phone and the loss of data.

My S3 had all the symptoms of the sudden death problem. It died on overnight charge and would not boot pass the Samsung logo.
Installing the same firmware that was on the phone before it failed did not fix the problem. But... Installing the latest firmware did and allowed the phone to boot normally and I was able to retrieve ALL data from the phone memory. I'm posting this because several people have said that it is not possible to retrieve data from the phone once this problem occurs.
I still intend to leave my phone in for repair but I was at least able to get my data. :good:
I don't think you had actually reached full or half sds. If you had, people were correct that you couldn't flash it.
Before my sds I had several filesystem corruptions which I recovered with backups and rom flashes but these were pre cursars to the actual sds issue.
Everyone should use dropbox auto upload for photos and foldersync for other data as a preventative measure

This may work if your phone is actually recognized by a pc. If not, like mine, I don't think there is a way to recover the internal memory (unless it's possible to remove memory modules and read stuff off of it??)

SD card, moving apps and writing

So I just installed a brand new SanDisk 64Gb SD card to my Z2, but seems KitKat changed alot on how work with external card. From what I have found true Google, third party like ES file Explorer can no longer write files to my SD card, so I'm forced to stick with the stock file browser? Seems very odd to me I got to admit, even tho I read a long story of why this was a good thing as fare as security goes. No way around it?
Secondly, I only have the 16GB version, and that's a fairely low storage capasity in 2014. I see I can move music, pictures and movies to my SD card, but can I move whole applications, or am I stuck with around 12GB application capasity for the next years? Seems to me that's a limit I will reach pretty soon. Is it possible to move application, or are media files all I can store on my SD card?
Unlock and root, then you can fix the problem and access the Sd card normally from all apps.
(For instance, with "SD Fix" in the playstore).

Do I need to unlock to root my device? Atleast on my old Asus TF700 unlocking spoiled any and all warranty, and I rather not go down that route with a 1 month old tablet if it could be avoided. That said, living with this huge clamp around my tablet's foot does not sound very tempting. Thougth this was the kind if crap I got away from when I gave my kid the Ipad and bought Android instead...

An unrooted Android device is not the way to go, anyway.
When unrooted, you have to live with all this bloatware and unwanted background processes and ads and and and...
For me applies: Either I really like the device and I want to keep it, then it will be rooted, period. Or I don't, then I return it.

I agree with that, but in this case it seems rooting means unlocking bootloader and this again cancels my 5 years warranty as messes with the DRM keys... If there was some easy way of rooting without unlocking, I would do it, but at this point I'm not willing to unlock a 32 days old device. Shame I missed this until today, as the 30 days return policy just closed, if not it would most likely be going out the doors...

Looks good, but sadly also requires root :/
What i think is that if you have paid a heavy amount on warranty then one should not root.. while rooting can be a Liability as well as an Asset.. for a device of low range specifications rooting and increasing the performance of the device is an Asset.. while if you will root devices like Note 3, Galaxy S5, Xperia Z2.. It will be a Liability.. Because these devices already on peak of their performance cant be changed much even after rooting.. while greed has no end.. still people sacrifice their warranty of costly flasgship smartphones and root them..

I just got my Z2, went home updated to .402 firmware and rooted it using EasyRootToo and installed SD Card Kitkat Fix but unfortunately I still couldn't see the Move to SD Card option from the App Info, is there something that I missed?
"Move to SD card" is not a standard Android option, it's only implemented by certain manufacturers, especially Samsung.
Hi guys,
Dont want to create a new topic and since this fits my issue so I'll ask in here.
I have a LTE 16GB version SGP521 with KK 4.4.2. I also have the latest firmware 402 installed.
I have bought a 64GB Class 10 ; 90MB/s read and 45MB/s write SD Card.
I was dreading that the 16GB internal is not enough and it is becoming a problem. I have been searching online for options to swop Internal and external sd cards.
I found this program https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.codlab.int2ext&hl=en , Root External 2 Internal SD, which apparently will trick android to think the external SD card is your internal and vice versa.
Question:
1. Did anyone try this one their Z2 Tablet?
2. Does it work with KK?
3. What settings other than "The original internal mounting point" and "The original external mounting point" must one change under the app setting to get this to work?
Like mentioned I found a few threads about this, but since it appears to different for devices I would like to first check with someone who already did this.
Any help?
Cheers

For some odd reason I can't install any apps anymore even with more than 3GB memory internally avail and 30+GB avail on my SDcard.

I understand there are some that shouldn't root their new s5 or g3, but seriously this response is a bit asinine since you are posting it on XDA. You know, a site for developers, themers etc. There are a TON of reasons why we root our phones, and none of which has to do with greed. Is it greedy to want some admin rights to a device that we not only own, but one of which we are more than likely going to be developing on or themeing on... Its like the whole reason most of us despise apple and are here with our droids!

Internal memory calculates wrong on 64gb version

I'm rather a noob with Android and could use some help as I've only had my Verizon Galaxy S4 64GB since February. I'll try and provide as much information as I can so that I can get the proper help.
The problem I am having is that my internal memory is not calculating correctly. Instead of saying 64GB (minus GB for stock ROM size) it calculates to 32.00GB evenly. The phone was previously rooted via this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
I am not sure what I might have done to cause the incorrect storage amount so I'll mention some steps I took that could have been the underlying culprit to the problem.
While my phone was rooted I experienced problems with certain apps that were installed on the phone not being able to update due to the "insufficient storage" error. When this happened I would uninstall the app and re-install it which sometimes worked and other times the storage error continued and I would reinstall the app and all of its data via Titanium Backup.
After getting sick and tired with the "insufficient storage" error I tried clearing the cache for these apps both in application manager and also wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. When that didn't work I tried using the "wipe data/factory reset" option thinking that I could just re-install all my apps fresh and clean,...hopefully without the "insufficient storage" error.
In hindsight, that may not have been the best way to solve the problem. It was after doing all these steps that I first noticed my internal memory now read 32.00GB instead of a higher amount closer to 64GB.
Searching the web and these forums yielded no results to solving the problem,...only a few threads about SD card sizes not calculating correctly. (In case it matters, my SD card's total space is calculating correctly at 7.40GB available on a 8GB card.)
Then the KitKat update from Verizon came out and I decided to install it in hopes of it fixing the problem. In order to upgrade from Android 4.3 to Android 4.4.2 I had to unroot the phone because the upgrade wouldn't work on the phone when rooted. I unrooted using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
I had trouble doing the No-Wipe method (2 failed attempts) and had to use the Full Wipe method. My SCH-I545 runs on VRUEMK2 and I was very careful in choosing the correct files (well, as certain as I can be). It successfully unrooted. However, the Full Wipe method did not help fix the internal memory problem once the phone was restored to its stock setting.
I installed Android 4.4.2 successfully but, again, the internal memory is not showing the right amount.
So,...can any of you wise and benevolent gurus help or have any ideas? It would be much appreciated.
My phone reads as follows:
Baseband version: I545VRUFNC5 (I noticed this is not VRUEMK2 as before. Is this due to the KitKat upgrade?)
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build Number: KOT49H.I545VRUFNC5
Thanks in advance for your help. Let me know if you need any more information I might have missed.

Hi, decaturbob! I purchased the 64GB through my local Verizon Wireless store. They had to send away for it but they did have it. I don't know if it is something that is newly offered or by request but I did buy it quite recently (middle of February, 2014). I promise that the Total Space did read higher than 32.00GB before (and, yes, I know the difference between the internal memory and the SD card memory, in case anyone wonders). I just want to recover that space since I paid extra for it.
Decaturbob is right. There is no version on Verizon that has 64Gb of storage. They only have 16 and 32. My guess is that You have a 32gb s4 and an extra sd card installed which caused you to think you had higher than 32gb internal storage.

OK, I am not saying that isn't possible because I want to be open to all possibilities (including the notion that I really don't know what the hell I am talking about).
But if what you say is true, then why do I not see this extra SD card slot in the Storage menu? (My SD card currently reads 7.40GB available which is correct.) And why was my Total Space showing more than 32GB when I first bought the phone? Perhaps this hypothetical extra SD card was linked to the internal memory so they showed up as 64GB combined? If so, then I want that back! I can always go back to the guy who sold it to me, I guess, and see about replacing it,...although it WAS rooted and that may pose a problem even after I returned to the stock ROM, unrooted.
Or, let's put it this way,...if this was a 32GB phone that incorrectly calculated only 16GB of internal memory what would you advise that person to do?

Thanks, decaturbob. I installed diskusage and it showed 24747MiB for Storage Card and 7577MiB for /storage/extSdCard. No other cards were detected (as I didn't think there would be). Well, I am willing to accept that my phone is really a 32GB phone and not a 64GB as I have believed since purchase. Only one thing bothers me,...why did it read over 32GB when I first purchased the phone? Seriously, that was the first thing I checked when I got the phone was the storage capacity because that is what I wanted - 64GB. It makes no sense. And I don't do drugs. Really! I was very explicit about what I wanted with the Verizon rep and I paid an extra $200 over the 32GB model for it as I understood at the time. I just don't get it. I plan on taking it to Verizon after work and finding out exactly what the hell I payed for and received.
Thanks anyways to those of you willing to help. If anything you either got a good laugh out of this or, like me, will wake up screaming in the night over it. I suspect the first is more likely with you guys.

Take a look at your receipt...The 32gb s4 was a bunch more

Not sure if this will work, but from an adb shell, do "su", then "cat /proc/partitions" and see what size mmcblk0 is reported to be. On my 16GB unit, it's 15388672 (1024 byte blocks = a bit less than 16 GB).
There's a VERY remote possibility that you flashed a 32 GB partition table (PIT) onto your phone, causing it to lose half the storage.
Why I say "very" is because Verizon never sold a 64 GB SCH-i545 to my knowledge, just 16 and 32 GB models.
And I think you would have remembered using ODIN to flash a new PIT file. Rooting alone didn't do this.
Any way that you could check the serial number to find out if it was a 64Gb?

@matteber
Have you looked on your receipt or the side of the box the phone came in? It should say either 16 or 32

I took the phone back to Verizon Wireless. It is a 32GB phone according to the serial number. They said that they keep stock of both 16 and 32GB phones and that the sales rep who took three days and supposedly ordered the 64GB model for me was fired a few weeks back for rooting (or offering to root) customer phones on the side. I don't really know what is up with the whole thing but they did give me $300+ back that I was apparently overcharged. Whatever. I'll just buy a 32 or 64GB SD Card for the extra memory I wanted. Not the way I wanted to do it but,...oh well.
Thanks to all who gave ideas, suggestions and other input.

Wow huh what a shady deal that all turned out to be. That's great you got money back though. I use both a Transcend and SanDisk 64g cards in both S4's I have. Both cards have treated me very well. Got them in Amazon for cheap too
