broken digitizer - got stuck during the exchange process - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey there
my digitizer got broken, but not the LCD
so i bought a new digitizer and i'm trying to switch it.
all good and well during the taking apart process but when i tried to reconnect the new digitizer, there's a part when you need to insert the chip onto the back of screen so you can attach it to the motherboard.
the problem is that i didn't manage to put the chip into the cellphone and through the screen
there are pictures here attached explainning better what I've been trying to do.

I'm not sure if there is a trick to this, but you need to make a fold at the thin strip, and connect the back of the connector to the top of the "ATMEL" chip (the chip on the other side of the connector strip. Then you insert it slowly and it should work properly. Thats how I replaced my digitizer.
Let me know if it helps, I would try posting pics/videos if it becomes totally not understandable to you.
Good luck!

this ****ed up digitizer
i managed to insert the 2 tiny parts into the back , but they wont connect. so i took them out again.
then i took in my hand and put it gently on the connector and whoops it ****ing ripped off.
pff this ribbon cables so poor material

I used a pair of tweezers to pull it through thhe hole. Worked after a few careful tugs

I got this trouble, also, and broke a digitizer.. xD
what you need to do is dettach the lcd panel from the phone, that way the hole gets bigger, so you need to dettach it, and attach to the digitizer/frame. accomodate the flex and all will fit well (Hope you can understand my por english )

ive noticed some weak responsiveness from mine after installing it. has anyone else had this issue? laggy button response and some times phantom touch issues

So what are you saying? That I should buy a new digitizer? I really don't wanna break a third 1 ... Could some1 upload a video or something explaining this part and then reattaching it? Thanks

here is a complete teardown guide, perhaps it makes more easier
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola+Atrix+4G+Teardown/4964/2

Where did you buy it? I bought mine at eBay...
Anyway thank s for the guide but this is the easy part. The hard part is inserting the digitizer and reconnecting it all back
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4

I got mine on ebay and a decent pair of tweezers can take care of pulling the cable through the slot.
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app

Aactually, it is the easiest part... You need to remove the lcd, assemble with tje digitizer/glass and the pair will fit into atrix without issues. When you remove the lcd, the hole for the flex gets bigger and it will slide thru very easily
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app

The digitizer connects to the motherboard. But the lcd is behind the digitizer. So what help it will do if I remove the LCD? Because I've tried it with no luck...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4

When you remove the lcd the hole you insert digitizer's flex gets bigger. paste the lcd with the digitizer, both will fit nicely

[Q] Fingerprint scanner tape peeling off

Hi guys. My Atrix was walking fine until today in class, I suddenly feel something going off the power button, when I check, a sort of black tape from the fingerprint scanner is peeling off. I'm not really sure what to do about this. I can't claim warranty since its a Korean Atrix, bought in Vietnam and using in Australia
What should I do with this ? peel it off and get a DIY fix or any other option ?

as in 2 sided tape ? if its normal clear tape then how can the scanner works then lol
Whatever you do do not peel it off you will ruin your scanner. This is what I did to fix mine. I took some of my girlfriend's fake nail glue and put a tiny drop of it in the tip of a pair of pointed scissors and put a tiny dab under the corner of the tape. Hold the tape down for about a minute till the glue dries. Don't use too much or it will lock up the button. Works like a charm.
Out of curiosity how long did it take for this situation to develop for you?
Mine was like It when I got it. Not from att tho. From a trade. I think the phone was only about a month old
My is around 2 month old. Thanks for the tip, will try it out
Aight let me know if it works for ya. Like I said just use a tiny tiny bit
Hmph, mine is fine and it's 7 months old, but it's a bit slanted

Mine is a bit slanted too! I hope it doesn't peel off too... Too bad, I love this phone!
Why oh why did I have to read this?
Never using the scanning feature again.

Just curious, to those of you having this problem...do you store your phone in your pocket?
I have my Atrix in the otterbox defender with a belt clip, haven't seen this. I'm wondering if it is getting caught on something in your pockets?
Had this phone since the release date and do not have this problem.
I hate you people just looked at mine and noticed there's the tiniest bit coming off from one corner
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
I wonder if there is a replacement part available to be ordered online.
Got mine release day in US. Scanner was initially perfectly level but over time it became slanted. No issue with the tape peeling off though.
Slow down guys, the "slant" is quite common - and there's an old thread about that around here too.
The sticker peeling part of it, is uncommon... (and hopefully it stays that way)

I remember that when the Atrix was first released, people were pooping kittens over the slanted button (here and in the Moto forums) until they realized pretty much everybody had the same issue.
If you look in this picture you can see where the cable is connected which in turn "holds" that end of the button down giving the appearance that it's "crooked" (source: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/2 )

I don't have "tape" on my fingerprint scanner it had clear tape when itvcame out the box new but I took it off no big deal oh and I put it in an otter box case and it would get way too hot like 140+ so I took it out went with a bodyglove case and made vent holes in back of it ; )

I also can't see any tape on mine, and I've kept it in my pocket without a cover for 5.5months now with no problem, I've also used the fingerprint scanner frequently during that time.
mine is slanted too! haha

[PICS/Guide-ish]Taking your rear housing off

Hi everyone! While waiting for a donor phone to be dropped in my lap at work today, i spent about 20 min taking my phone apart to see what was inside......So please enjoy, and I have some questions about the shielding over the radio components.....any ideas on taking it off? I know i should de solder them but without burning the board? whats the best approach Ive never soldered so please post a link or something. I really want to take a look under those shields. So without further ado taking your housing off!!!!!
Take out all the screws and stuff....helps if you have a fingernail or a pick for pulling it apart too!

Pull the sticker to expose the mysterious radio components
and your all naked!!!

Shielded components
Any ideas on how to get them off?

I can tell you from experience that this is a well built phone. Pay close attention to secondary seals under the rear housing and usb/hdmi ports. I had a customer come in with one that had a coffee bath and still worked. The only parts that got wet was between the lcd and digitizer and between the lcd panel and reflector (the mopho was face down on a table when it happened). Except for the coffee staining the reflector panel in the LCD assembly it was good to go after desiccant/hotbox treatment.

So when you do get this opened up, keep in mind if there is a n lte chip, it will be a dual wi-max/lte chip, only one has been made between a chip company and motorola and motorola has only made one wi-max phone so ill place my bets the dual chip is in here, ill try to repost with a picture of what it should look like
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
No LTE Support for Photon
No need to find a sacrificial lamb for your curiosity, our phones wont support LTE at all. The Photon has the Wimax Chipset Version bece3502, the Dual mode LTE/WIMAX chipset is the bece5000.
So there you have it, Sucks but its better to know then to ruin a phone.
Ive heard and read its just running the Beceem 3502 drivers for now, ive also heard of sprint representatives saying an update will come for the photon to support lte when theyre network is expanded, what other reason would motorola hide the photons full hardware information until january, when sprint releases theyre "big secret" at ces which im guessing is LTE

Cracked case around speakers

it started cracking (from what i noticed) like, last week
yesterday, it's totally broken off
anyone else have a DIY fix? superglue i'm thinking
****sux because i had the touchpad inside the official case day 1 AND it doesnt get moved around often nor does it see heavy usage
i have a theory that the case actually helps increase the chances of the cracks because any vibration/pressure is transmitted somewhat equally around the touchpad so even if the speaker side was not touched, any other force small or big goes speaker side and will eventually crack
Why don't u contact HP Support? They will replace the case!
I have the same problem that you are having. I have my touchpad for about a week or so and it cracked between both speakers it really sucks. So what I did was used super glue to fix the problem it might not look the best it works for now. Its nice to find out that its just not me having these problems but it really sucks.
Sent from my GT-i9100 using xda premium
ya I know about the customer support replace, just wanted to get opinions on superglue approach before then because I'm sorta scared that my touchpad will get replace with a diff one or the screen gets scratched etc
if the super glue works I'll just do that
Don't do the superglue, I really regret doing it myself, it's not clear and is very ugly, i need to find a way to get it off before i can send it in.
I'm thinking of getting mine repaired and then getting it wrapped in ghost armor.
The armor works great...

I didnt have "Cracks" but I have the ripple effect on the small plastic part like it was going to crack.
wondering about the superglue method myself (i have cracks on both speakers). does it melt the plastic cover?
I have cracks on my TP as well. It's a hardware defect, much like the original Pre / usb door cracks. The plus side is that it will never spread to the screen, and it does not affect the performance (or looks if it's in a case).
I don't recommend sending it back for "repair" ... it's not worth it and you don't know if you'll get it back.
It works.
I just noticed cracks as well. I'm going to check out that ghost armor. Looks neat.
Sent from my Touchpad using xda premium
well the cracks around the speakers is cosmetic. Contact HP Support they will replace the casing.
I had the same issue with my TP. The customer support was good. They sent me a return box and label. All you have to do is to pack your TP as per instructions and drop it at nearby UPS store. I received the repaired TP within a week.
Act fast before the warranty expires.
I just noticed a crack in mine. Called them and they are sending a box out. It's covered for a year they said.
10 have it back. I'm sad but will be happy to get new one and will have armor case ready and waiting for it.

Yea. HP is going to get my tablet back in a few days. I have to go drop it off. I wonder if they've fixed the problem and the new ones don't do it. I sure hope so.
I have dropped mine and its cracked on the corner and some of the plastic has come away. Does anyone know if replacement covers are available while searching about this? Cant seem to find one.
My TP has now developed a crack near the speakers! Spoke to HP who said there was a batch of TP`s who had a "bad" batch of plastic and the new plastic they use is better and should not crack!!
I have to send photo`s of the crack to their Argentinian office and then the TP gets sent from the UK to Hungary for repair (through UPS)
Hungary?? I think that is the first time I have read the word "Hungary" anywhere in months (do not spend a lot of time looking at maps of Eastern Europe).

When you say this, I would expect that the Touch Screen Digitizer to be okay.
It looks like something ran over it. How far did you drop it from?
from first floor, of the stair...
I would take it to a repair shop and see what they say.The screen etc is stuck to a metal plate(you see the edge of it around the screen).
Take it to a couple of places and get quotes.

In Sweden samsungservices will replace the screen for about 100USD (shipping included). I do not no if this is an international offer, but it's woth checking. If it makes you feel any better my new Note 2 looks like that.:crying:
Mine is also cracked, Samsung told me they would replace it for 140€, since they always have to replace screen and digitizer (its impossible to separate them), I looked in many other places and they always told me 190€..
Mine has just a little crack, so I don't mind using it like this, maybe one day I will replace it.
In the netherland they offerd 195 Euro's
I have read topics where they only replace the glass. I have to do it my self, that is not the problem. But need to be sure what to replace..
I am not offering my phone to a samsung service, its to expensive. Tnx for the replies.

It hurts to look at the phone and the screen is cracked, doesn't it?

If you are not buying a replacement screen kit then just leave the phone as it is.Your going to end up making it worse.
If you think you know better then get the outer glass and try to remove the old one.If underneath is not broken and you stick the outer bit back on,and it works then youve saved money.
You can then come back on here saying how clever you are.And check a few threads about screen replacement in the general section,as there was a clown saying he had managed it.Cant remember his name but he was posting links to a naff you tube offering. He called himself "cadburyfudge"......or some name chocolate based.

There is a small barb on the end of the "string" that goes into the phone (a bit like a fish hook) which stops it from falling out in normal use.

Mag charger
I remember reading a warning of sorts somewhere (Maybe here on XDA) about the waterproofing integrity on these doors being compromised rather quickly from the normal daily opening and closing for charging, dust, etc. The article/post went on to describe how much better it would be to charge with the magnetic port...Faster charging, less wear and tear on the micro usb port and seals on the door etc. I was sold on that bit of info and even before I got my ZU I bought a few of those mag charging cables on ebay. Now I only need to open my micro USB door cover for OTG or MHL access, which honestly, I haven't needed to yet. All things considered I have a little more peace of mind that if I have any "Water" related accidents with my phone I'm not out $650.00 for one stupid little rubber seal.
