Jelly Bean SDK was released today. I haven't been this excited about an OS yet!
Anyone going to work on ROMs?
Butter seems like it is going to be awesome!
Im interested in the Voice search and Google Now.

SDK aka software development kit is to help developers create apps compatible with jelly bean, not going to help with rom development.

We had gingerbread ROMs based off the SDK on the Incredible..
What about the PDK, thought I saw something about that being released on the I/O?

It does indeed help with rom development. Just not as easy.
I think it might help get it quicker too because the European version probably will get jelly bean quicker...

I have no idea what the PDK is. That's something new I think.
But, yes, SDK can be used to develop ROMs, we just need to get a kernel developer to figure those out and make sure they are compatible. It likely won't happen until the OTA's hit in mid-July but the fact that the Galaxy Nexus is getting the OTA bodes well for us I think...

The Galaxy Nexus does not have to rely on Samsung to push out updates though, and it is supposed to get updates first.

PDK as explained is the development kit for Physical Hardware, in other words for the Manufacturers. If developers that makes ROMs can get their hands on this one, then it would make it ALOT easier for them to create the ROMs. And the other nice thing they said is that the PDK was to be available for the Hardware Manufacturers 3-4 months before release, which should decrease the amount of time it takes for the manufacturers to release the next OS version. The problem is to try to get this from Google if you are not a hardware manufacturer.
And then there is still the issue with the drivers which is what the manufacturers sits on.
I know it doesn't help us get updates on the GS3 just bec the GN gets one, but having the GN getting the OTA can help us with ROM development esp if we have the kernels to work with.

It would seem then that Samsung should have been working on Jelly Bean for quite some time. What are the chances they release JB on the GS3 in the next 2 months if they have had 3-4 months to work on it?
They had ICS since at the latest last October and here it is June before they are releasing ICS for GS2. Seems the lead time is ~8 months. So if they had PDK 4 months ago and it takes them 8 months, then we should see JB in October/November. Unless the PDK somehow makes it easier to develop the ROM...

There are certainly some great features in there, but I think the "haven't been this excited about an OS yet" statement might be a little much. I'd say the milestone releases, 4.0 and 2.0 were certainly much more exciting than this. If it was intended to be the most exciting update yet, it would've had a version number to reflect that. Just saying.
Having said that... I'm pretty excited too, but it'll likely take Sammy a little while to push an official update if you're like me and don't root right away.
I want to see Project Butter and the new notifications in action!

I doubt Samsung has had the Jellybean PDK for four months already. Jellybean probably hasn't been finalized for that long.

My understanding was that google tried the early release this time around by giving it to the manufacturers two weeks before I/O. It is for the future releases that it was going to be 3-4 months.

Depends. The VSync governor and CPU prespread is rather a quantum leap. Yes, it's not massively exceeding the introduction of the 2.2 Dalvik JIT but it's going to push Android along and, likely, past the Cupertino Competition.
Not to mention "Butter" was the coolest code name, yet. Chet (who's also doing the "For Butter or for Worse" session tomorrow, gave a good impromptu hallway intro to some of us, and it's exciting. VERY exciting.
I flashed the toro version of the Jelly Bean SDK port to my Nexus and holy hell its so smooth. Much smoother than my GSIII. I can't begin to think how smooth this device will be especially since the screen is much more sensitive and responsive than my Nexus. 4.1 is what 4.0 should have been. The Google Now feature provided INSTANT response with no lag. Its almost like talking to a person. Im really impressed with jelly bean and hope Samsung provides timely updates.

Considering Samsung subscribes to the "want to upgrade your OS, upgrade the phone" philosophy, I am not sure we'll see JB on the S3 any time soon. I'd presume we'll see an AOSP Rom soon-ish, though, given the number of S3 owners at Google I/O that just stared and lusted...
Have a One X+ arriving tomorrow. First Android phone. Have general knowledge about Custom ROMs but couple questions regarding the options now and future for this device.
Comes with Android 4.1 and Sense 4.5. Obviously like many Power Users, I would love to have Android 4.2 be realize it was just released to AOSP a couple days ago.
Will any ROM for One X work with One X+ since they are essentially the same device, just faster clock speed and bigger battery?
Is there a Cleanrom with Android 4.1 and Sense 4.5? And if there is, or will be, are the benefits significant enough to make it worth installing? I'm not doing gaming or anything. So performance isn't a big concern. Stability and battery life are really my main concerns.
Based on past experience, how long probably until there is a Jelly Bean 4.2 stable ROM for this device?

No, the HOX+ has a different kernal so will need to be a HOX+ specific device. Stay tuned as if you have an ATT USA version you might need a specific rom for this carrier too, we dont' know yet.

Probably a few weeks, maybe a month, who knows since you can't even root your device yet if your on ATT USA??? Patience my friend, patience and in the mean time enjoy your device out of the box as it already comes amazing. By the time you have the device fully figured out i'm sure a Root and 4.2 Clean Rom will be available by then. Don't get ahead of yourself bud

I should've been less callous when I made this post, but I'm aware of your GE attempt, and it's time for a more experienced dev to make this ROM happen. I'm really tired of the radio issues with yours. I've tried nearly every update you have created since your original and it doesn't appear a whole lot of progress has been made over the last month, In fact I'm pretty sure your 4.6 edition with smoother than this last one.
I constantly have issues with the radio, and the carrier banner has yet to be even removed (much less fixed, although I would just be happy with it being removed).
I appreciate the effort, but Im hoping that someone can create a smooth GE dump and have it be done with. I absolutely hate touchwiz, and Im tired of this touchwiz AOSP skins when the real thing is so much better.
Nitro's Eclipse s4 GE dump is pretty nice, but it still has the same radio issues as yours. But at least he got the carrier banner removed. I kind of like the inverted stuff too, but ive been waiting months to see the power of the GS4 behind stock android.... without ANY issues

You know what I meant, i just used a bit of hyperbole. Its AOSP with TW elements underneath. The AOSP may go a little bit deeper than the skin, but its still pretty much AOSP outside and TW inside. TW inside was the OP's issue, and its inextricable from an S4 GE ROM. If you take all the TW elements away, its not really a GE ROM anymore. Unless Dubsy misinformed us, which I doubt.
And the OP's other issue, the radio, is pretty much always the main issue when porting from another device.
GE GS4s are getting the 4.3 updates as of today. Hopefully someone will come out with a 4.3 GE dump soon (that runs smooth)... fingers crossed

Got to say I am with you on getting a good GE ROM. I have not tried Dubsy's latest, but nitro's 1.5 is pretty dang smooth. I had a few data drops yesterday, but I didn't notice any today (didn't use the phone as much, though), so if the data drops, it must come back. Going to be on radio all weekend, so I will get more experience with it. I think its stable enough for a DD.
Both Nitro's and Dubby's run fantastically with no data drops!

I am really hopeful for Nitros. I was using his yesterday and liked it, but I still would like the radio to be ironed out.
Dubsys had many little issues that made it impossible to use on a daily basis. One problem I continue to have is that any phone number starting with "+1" must be redialed without the +1... half my contacts are like that and it is incredibly annoying.
For the amount of time Dubsy has had to work on it, I feel like this issues should've been addressed by now. I think I speak for a lot of the community here when I ask for a more experienced developers help on this GE port.
There is not and will not be a Google Experience S4 for Verizon. Porting the international version requires a ton of adjustments to make the radio functional for us. Dubbsy has really stepped up for us and done way more than he initially planned. Nitro took that base and added some nice things as well. Without their work, we may not have anything GE-related at this point. Be patient and have fun with what we get. Not good enough? Become a dev, or switch to AT&T.

True, but I actually am fairly upset, because while dubbsy claims to be doing this project, it may be detracting other devs from taking on the project themselves. I am getting tired of flashing each *new* update, which doesn't appear to be fixing any of the bugs. Then I have to odin, re flash etc etc, which takes hours of time. It has been over a month that I have been watching these projects and seen little improvement, and like I said, I am sure I am not the only person I speak for when I say this.

In my experience from other phones, 98% of roms are works in progress through the life of the phone. Yes most get to a "stable" point, which is subjective, but unless they're heavily stock-based it takes awhile if it ever gets to that point. Coming from an HTC phone I have seen devs jump ship due to forum/community issues, so I may be sensitive to these types of comment. I

I really don't care if you're upset to be honest. Don't follow my threads, and don't use my roms... Pretty simple really.
From the beginning I posted a proof of concept to prove data alone, nothing else. I said for devs to contact me and I'd send the files for them to maintain. When it was clear no one was going to pick up and run with it I started modifying the framework to be at least a bit more stable. With the open offer still out there to share a fully decompiled GE working folder in a shared cloud.

Hate to say it but looks like some Note 2 TW devs are leaving the phone. Seems they are vanishing weekly. Too bad because there were some great ROMs out there and I hate to see some of them go for the VZW variant. Really sad that VZW and Samsung are making things so difficult for devs these days. Makes me wonder if they left it open just long enough to steal hard working dev ideas for themselves without having to pay an R&D department to test the OS. Looks like AOSP 4.3 ROMs are starting to take off though, and with the addition of the App Bar, Halo and a host of other mods by great devs we still have a few options. That coupled with great mod apps in the Play Store you can almost get the TW experience with AOSP now.
Or maybe they are moving on to other projects until we get the 4.3 TW update. Then, hopefully some of them will return and develop for one of the top devices still on the market. The Note 3 will most likely be locked down like the S4 so I am thinking the Note 2 may be the last great Samsung device open to rooting and having the ability to flash custom ROMs.
To all the devs that made (or still making) great TW ROMs for our VZW Note 2, thanks for all your hard work. I know I have enjoyed being able to try different ROMs and tinkering with them. You all deserve donations and our gratitude. You guys and gals make the Android experience enjoyable for all of us.
I'm sure they will be back when we get the 4.3 update. This is the only phone that has an unlockable bootloader, with TW on verizon that's actually decent.

What's wrong with the s3?
I'm sure the s4 will have an unlocked bootloader soon, especially with the 3k+ bounty.
TBH, this is what always happens. it makes sense that the devs move back to the latest phone. plus the note 3 is coming out soon too, so, yeah, pretty sure what happened to the s3 will happen to the note 2.
at first I really liked TW, but then I switched to the PACman rom and I haven't looked back. the features on TW are nice, but honestly I don't use them that much. i know every user varies, but there are a lot of apps out there that replace TW functionality. I really haven't noticed since switching. I just was unhappy being on 4.1.
As a TW ROM author for the S3 I can tell you guys TW has its limits and there is only so much we can do so we are all awaiting the 4.3 upgrade. We can mess around with themes and included apps, inverting things, but there are limits. It is not like TW has a nightly source code to keep building from. Just be patient and maybe play with some different themes.
Also keep in mind that the xposed framework has removed a lot of the necessity for a true custom rom as it does just about everything that previously had to be hardcoded in. Most custom roms anymore are really just themes with xposed installed by default.

The S4 wont be unlocked...however Im sure something like Kexec or Safestrap will be used to work around the Locked Bootloader. If you read into the details of Qualcomm processors and qfuses, you will quickly learn its pretty much impossible.
JB is still a very active rom, as is Nebula. One of the problems I have run into is that many of the roms are built on the international base. Cleanrom was the perfect rom for me but unfortunately Scott has moved on.
Jellybeans = very active, but I personally seem to always have little issues, I have however never seen anyone else with them.
Cleanrom = dead, but rock solid stable for me
Transnebula = Great support, and very active, however the tab UI just does not work for me... I would KILL to have these guys put together something like clean rom but with floating multiwindow. (One of the devs is also f&*(ing Batman in disguise I swear, listening to his gadget list is bloody awesome)
Lab Rats = a theme beast, but I am not really into theming, seems to me there is always something not quite right with custom themes.
There are also a few international based roms that are very active.
Edit: Oh yeah, also beware flashing Lab Rats at work unless you want your co-workers making fun of you for the boot up sound

Agreed. I actually missed my GS3 for about 2 months until the N2 ROMs started picking up. Now I'm digging PAC Man 4.3 and can't wait to see what happens with TW 4.3. Just hope the devs migrate back eventually. The N2 is a great device.

We have patches to run roms from other carriers, as well as rock solid roms that work flawlessly. X posed has opened up almost endless possibilities, and active themers(<is this even a word?) )help the look of a lot of the roms we do have. One of the best things we have is a bunch of good natured members willing to help, and learn. This goes a long way. New developers are born every day. Some will leave, some will stay. Heck Deckoz just started. Trans nebula is his first rom. This phone is a nice piece of kit, and unless I can get a xperia xl super cheap, and working flawless on Verizon, then I am staying put for awhile. You guys are stuck with me.

Kenny,
Since your are reading ( and cleaning- thanks!) a lot of posts I wonder if you have seen any ExFat support for AOSP roms.Actually I want to be able to format a 64GB sandisk and be able see all ( most) of 64G and be able to put files larger than 4G.
Any AOSP roms/kernels with such support?
Many thanks
Abe

Looks like it is mostly CM 10.1 support but found these : http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=Exfat on cM
Updates are great, but since TW has its own limitations and we've had 4.1.2 for how long now? Tweaks can only be so tweaky! 4.3 will breathe alot of new life into our phone. I am not upgrading to the N3 lest something makes it more desirable. But seeing that we get the same update it will have, I am willing to wait a month to see what happens.
I currenty have a VZW S4, but it's locked down tight... and im kind of sick of samsung siding with the carrier on this. so i was thinking of getting the onemax through edge.
Is it locked as tight as the s4? that is can you flash AOSP roms after getting the latest update?
And how is development, i might be a bit lost because of a lack of carrier specific subforum, but i dont see many VZW roms...
Development is practically non existent. However viper team is about to drop the first custom rom soon.
We have root.. Unlocked bootloader and S-off though.
Sense is flawless compared to the touchwiz.
sent from my humongous VZW HTC ONE MAX
Search.
The phone is fully unlocked as in bootloader unlocked (all variants) s-off (all variants) root and recovery (all variants) it's not that the developer support is non-existent it's the fact and this is in regards to AOSP that HTC hasn't released the source code yet for the kernel.. Once source is uploaded all AOSP teams and that will be Cyanogen first as always since all teams pull from CM will AOSP builds finally kick off... It's just a waiting game now. All the hard work getting to AOSP is done thanks to beaups!!! But yeah not to be that guy though since you are coming from the S4 and should know how XDA and all forums work read a bit. A post or 2 down from you was basically the same question lol.. If you would have checked Origiginal Android Development and Android Development you would have seen what is available thus far.... But to be honest though my man, this phone is sick... It's everything the OG One is but bigger for the phablet freaks like myself!!!!!!! Trust in the community and especially Flyhalf AOSP will come!

Given the hardware between the One and the MAX are almost identical it is expected to be easy for dev's to port the code for the MAX from the one.
me and @deagleone actually tried flashing the One's kernel and the phone boots, the only thing that was broken was the WiFi which is a because of the different hardware.
The One was the phones which received a lot of dev support and has variety of custom rom's from AOSP to Sense
Wait hold up.... You were able to boot a HTC One kernel? What kernel? This is interesting...

Yes, ElementalX @flar2's kernel for the HTC One. I did flash it and it booted up. I was not able to use the kernel features for example S2W, however @deagleone reported that S2W works with his ROM.
Once HTC makes the kernel sources available, i think development should pickup easily.
