Hi all,
I have seen a good offer for a branded G5 from an European carrier and I was wondering if there is any known way yet to de-brand it, in order to free it from the bloatware that I suppose it will be packed with.
If not, do you think normally this would be possible within some months from release, or were there already cases in the pase where this wasn't possible ever?
Thank you very much.
Derp
Accepted... I wrote a bit careless and I can see how the request was kinda funny.
Let me reformulate... In case I find the branding too disturbing and I want to flash a stock unbranded image (which I believe is possible for European H850 even if branded by carrier, right??) then I will miss OTA and maybe won't even be able to sideload OTAs like I used to with Nexus 5?

If you remove the original firmware flashing a different one you will lose OTA, but it seems that on G4 is possibile to receive update through LG Bridge (but i'm not sure), obviously the update you will receive will always been related to your brand.
Sideload as far as i know is not possibile on LG devices, because the Stock Recovery is made for Hard Reset only.
For now it's not possible to flash firmware on the G5, but some users are working both on LGUp and Flashtool 2.0.1.6 Here

OK thanks!
I would not see the point of providing a way to unlock the bootloader from LG itself even, if then you don't give people the possibility to flash something else on it, or maybe I'm missing the point of unlocking bootloader.
(talking about Italian Vodafone or Tim btw)

With the official bootloader unlock you lose the warranty, and there is no way to recover it, by flashing a no-brand firmware on al lg device the warranty remain (exception made for us carriers maybe).
Note that with an unlocked bootloader you can flash many things (roms, kernel, mods, xposed ecc...), with LGUp or Flashtool you can only flash official lg firmware.
So, LG provides an official bootloader unlock so the users can use their smartphone's full potential, but doesn't allow to flash official firmware because there is the smartphone update center for otas, and LG Bridge fo recovering and flash the whole firmware update, and not only the ota.
I've been using the RS988 G5 on Verizon since last month (that BHPhoto had on sale for $399, due to my old Note 4 DE having issues). For the price, it is a good phone, but I'm not liking the fact that it appears LG will not be upgrading it to Nougat, leaving it on 6.0.1 with months old security patch.
At this point, I'm not sure if I should just keep it for now and wait and see how the new phones are this year (G6, S8, Note 8, V30), or return it while I still can to BHPhoto and pick up something else. I could go with something used on Swappa (such as the Verizon branded G5 or V20 that both have 7.0) for around the same $400 or slightly more.
I'm so frustrated as you are... i live in argentina and a friend of mine brought me from this variant instead of a H850/830 as i requested but is such a good phone, i can't really complain
It's like a forgotten variant... i wonder if LG itselft knows it exists
Recieved the update

Is this notification actually for Nougat, or perhaps for just a more current security update? The size seems too small for the Nougat update is why I ask.
Update: I just downloaded and installed the 554.17MB update and it was the latest security update (2017-01-01) in s/w version RS98811d. Maybe Nougat will come in the next weeks/months.
I'm downloading the "d" firmware, but really slow even with my 175Mbps Comcast connection, so not sure where the LG Software Update Server is.
Too bad it still isn't Android Nougat, but at least it is the Jan 2017 security update. So there is still hope I guess.
Update:
Finished the download and install. Visually, can see no difference from the "c" version.
Sorry

Sorry i was excited...bur after installing i came to know that it was a security update
It looks like there is a RS988 Nougat Source Code listed here:
http://opensource.lge.com/osSch/list?types=NAME&search=lgrs988
But at the start of May, I'm doubtful we'll ever get it.
I had thought about going with the unlocked G6, but not any more, as LG is pretty bad about updates on their Unlocked devices.
I have read somewhere that they told a consumer that the RS988 would be updated in May, seeing the source code is a good sign I guess

I downloaded the source code, and the date on the files are from Feb 2017. So I guess there is still hope.
LG Replies (So Far)
I decided to periodically email LG about the Nougat update. My first email received this reply:
<<LG>>
Good day! Thank you for getting in touch with LG Email Services and letting us know about your concern. It’s our pleasure to assist you with your inquiry!
As far as we know and according to the list of updates we found on the following page, there has been an update for the RS988 phone model to Nougat 7.0 that was released this past 24th of March.
Software Updates are generally pushed into devices by the carriers or service providers (e.g. US Cellular, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) that phones are locked with over-the-air (OTA). Factory unlocked phones have no connections to these updates and receive updates through LG via OTA or a software update tool instead.
If you haven't received any notifications about recent software updates on your phone, please try to check for and download the latest update for your unlocked phone via the LG Bridge application. You may download and use this application on a computer from the following page.
Please follow the step-by-step instructions under the ‘PC Sync’ section of the page above.
<</LG>>
My 2nd email brought this response:
<<LG>>
According to the information that we got from our product specialists, unlocked phones should receive an update from LG Over-The-Air once available for the unit. LG OTA updates for unlocked phones have to pass through multiple Quality Checks for several carrier networks or service providers before their release so it takes a considerable amount of time in between releases compared to phones locked with a specific carrier.
Should you require further assistance or for any other concerns, please do not hesitate to email us back. We’re more than happy to help you the best we can.
Feel free to contact us also via Live Chat or Phone by dialing 1-800-793-8896.

/phandroid.com/2017/05/03/unlocked-lg-g6-android-nougat-update-us/ came across this today. I'm looking at buying this phone (LG rs988) can anyone confirm they have the update?
https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/68urq5/seems_like_the_unlocked_lg_g5_rs988_is_getting/
I have the unlocked rs988 and have not yet received the update yet. I checked on the phone and on lg bridge.
Checking every couple of hours will update here if the nougat update ever shows up. ?

Yes its Nougat with Android Security Patch Level of March 01, 2017.
When I updated using the LG Flash Tool, it had to reformat the partitions (user, system ...). Therefore I lost my old data.
I backed up my data before upgrading. Will try to restore using the LG backup tool and report back later.
Don't you need the rs988 dll file to flash. If so where did you find it

I used the LG Update tool from the link below.
Selected the upgrade radio button, followed by the kdz file and let the installation go through.
Again please backup as your data might be lost after the upgrade. To be on the safe side please remove sd card too.

This worked fine for me. I'm not the owner of any these files hence I cannot take responsibility if anything goes wrong. Please use it at your own risk
everything seems to be working had to factory reset like you said but just glad to finally have Nougat. Thanks

I guess the April upload is the Nougat one.
https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-rs988-firmwares/
I've been checking my G5 RS988 every day, and still no OTA Nougat update on it. I'd rather go that route as it (should) keep system data & apps in place, instead of doing the update via the LG Software which wipes/formats user data & apps.
I am on verizon and I can confirm the RS98810h_01_0303.kdz from lg-firmwares.com works on my RS988. I performed a backup and update with the tools and drivers provided in AUTOPrimes post linked below. Once I updated the device, I simply loaded the backup tool and restored my device, sms and apps appeared right back to the state they were before. My only question is that the firmware is listed as BPT (brightpoint), will this still include the same bands listed under the unbranded USA rs988?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/how-to/info-autos-g5-thread-t3350648
Hello all,
haven't found anything yet, so please don't be so angry when there is such a thread yet.
I'm about to root my G5 to get more power out of it but what are the differences in the firmware V20a - V20b and V20c?
as i know, 20b has no voice over LTE function and seems to be a Spanish vodafone version only ->http://foro.vodafone.es/t5/Actualiz...ización-LG-G5-H850-a-versión-V20b/td-p/760119
20 b and c have newer security patches inside as 20a will have.
i haven’t found more informations until now.
There doesn't seem to be a current guide on how to successfully rebrand, i can see a lot of people managing to brick their phones at present :/. Unless you trawl many pages across many different threads you will never get a clear answer, even after doing all that im not sure. How this info hasnt all been condensed into one current thread i dont know.
Anyways i digress, im currently on .132 running stock Australian Optus firmware on c34. Looking at rebranding to get updates faster (as you do). Am confident enough to do this myself without funky huawei but would like to understand completly how others are managing to brick so i don't fall into the same trap. Ultimately i would unlock bootloader, rebrand, and then relock the bootloader. I have no need for root or exposed etc.
From what i can see on Firmware Finder .145 has been released to C432 but not C636, i was under the impression that C636 was getting updates the fastest but doesn't appear to be the case here. I have no purpose for dual sim so keeping it as a L09 appeals. Are there any gotchas with the European firmware over international/asia?
I have loosely gathered the bricking was due to a bad update a few firmwares ago that was causing the hardbricks, if one avoids .134/.137 will they be ok? From a previous thread .145 xloader seems ok. To avoid this would going from my firmware to C432 .145 be wise? What would be the safest recommendation knowing that C34 has gimped firmware on .132- we have may security update but no face unlock, google assistant wakeup etc etc that other firmwares came with.
Then theres the "how do i actually do this" as rebranding has been taken out of HWOTA8.
Hoping @Pretoriano80 can drop by and share is wealth of knowledge and maybe we can get a thread that has all this info in one place lol
Good day,
Firstly you will have to make sure that the current firmware you are using is not a time bomb, cause apparently the bricks aren't caused by the software you are updating to, but rather the one you're using. Just ask at the bricking info forum for the guys to check your current firmware XLOADER if is affected or not.

Your current C34 firmware was received via OTA? If so, then you should be safe to rebrand from B132 C34 to B145 C432.
Edit: It looks like you are completely stock, so the rebrand should work just fine.

Just a quick bit about the build numebers, they are different for every region.
The C432 got the face unlock feature on B142 and handheld night cam together with the June patch on B145.
While the C635 just got both features and the June patch with an update with the build numeber B133.
What makes sense, each variant has its own branch in de build system.

You can flash to the India Oreo KDZ and you will be back on the India path.
Simple "upgrade" via LGUP.

Full image KDZ is always superior to partial image OTA.
But yes, you should receive notification of India OTA updates since you will be on official LG firmware for India. However, don't expect any updates for about 3 months. That's all LG has agreed to, at least security updates every 90 days once on Oreo. Oreo has now arrived for India.
For me, I will almost never take OTA, for reasons too lengthy to post here. In the past 4 years, over in the Motorola Quark forum we had to constantly educate people to NOT take OTAs. To instead wait for the full image and flash that. It's almost like an upside down world here in the V30 forum where people are obsessed with wanting OTAs.
I just had to advise someone today in India who took an OTA, which messed up his phone and now he has no full image to flash. Not LG, but a Motorola phone -- but same caution applies. He never unlocked his bootloader so he's out of luck. He can't even flash another region image (Motorola is locked down that way). He has to take phone to Motorola service center which is a great distance away.
My advice is to stick with full image, so you can re-flash if needed.
