All,
I upgraded to 4.3 Cyanogenmod unofficial ROM about 2 weeks ago and have been enjoying it ever since. I attempted to use OTA Vodoo rootkeeper to fool Sky Go into working which didn't work. Then I noticed that my root was disabled. I had managed to force it to work by enabling Apps and ADB. Whilst playing around in OTA rootkeeper I accidentally deleted su backup, but I did then press unroot and backup immediately after. My question is how can I restor root access ? Am I going to have to use Odin ? Annoyingly according to the OTA rootkeeper I have root access but Rootchecker Basic says I don't. Any suggestions ?
Regards

I checked and saw an OTA update for my Atrix (4.5.141) [mine currently 4.5.91 ; 2.3.4]
I downloaded and install but it appeared a < ! > in process then it restart itself and says update failed.
I think this problem caused by Root.(Is there any way to unroot my phone ?)
Be sure to undo anything you did that requires root access (defrost apps, etc)
For unrooting, it depends how you rooted your phone.
1) if you used the one click method, there's an unroot button
2) if you used the fastboot preinstall method, delete the su related files:
http://androidforums.com/atrix-4g-all-things-root/423259-best-way-unroot.html
It may be as simple as only removing su from /system/bin and uninstalling superuser.apk, but doing a full unroot is the safest way IMO.
I just updated today. ATT 2.3.4 with locked Bootloader, rooted with the one click method. When I went to use the one click method to unroot I received an error message saying that I didn't have the proper back up files.
After much searching on-line, I installed OTA RootKeeper and ran it to make my Atrix look like it hadn't been rooted. After the update I ran OTA RootKeeper again to restore root.
I've restarted my phone 3 or 4 times in the last 4 hours and so far all is well!

OTA Rootkeeper is good only if you used a root method that uses the zergrush exploit. Most of the one click methods use it. I however, used a method that edited build.prop. I used OTA Rootkeeper, updated, and it failed to properly restore root. Others that used a root tool that uses zergrush had no problem restoring with OTA Rootkeeper.
I have been searching and haven't found this, forgive me if it's out there.
Is there an unroot method for the GTab 10.1 Wifi that DOESN'T wipe and return to stock? I want to install a custom ROM and go back and forth between root as my company doesn't allow their Good for Enterprise app to work on a rooted device.
Thanks!
Delete /system/bin/su, then system/app/superuser.apk and reboot. I have done it and all the signs of root were gone. Also I've read that superSU from market does the job, but never tried it. Either way, afaik, the only way to be 10000% certain is to flash a clean, stock rom.

OTA root keeper is working with google play movies to temperarily unroot even works for OTA updates
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...m9yZy5wcm9qZWN0dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ..
Others have tried OTA root keeper without success with Good for Enterprise (GFE).
I tried SuperSU (which is a cool app!) without any luck. I tried it both with and without a rooted kernel. GFE still detects root even when it's been "turned off" in SuperSU.
I will next try to permanentally unroot via SuperSU and hope it doesn't wipe.

Permanent unroot works in SuperSU to unroot and allow Good for Enterprise to work on my tablet. I can always reflash the rooted update.zip file to gain root again if I need to.
Success! This allow root to be removed and not wipe the Galaxy Tab.

Which Galaxy Tab do you have? I have the Tab Pro 8.4 and I tried to do permanent unroot with SuperSU and GFE complained. What version of GFE was it? Did you do anything else after unroot?

Lol. This was from 2 years ago man. It was the original Galaxy Tab 10.1
I have no idea which version if GFE it was, but I'm sure this thread is old and dead now.
I just got an update for Superuser from Google Play, v3.1(42), released today. In the changelog, Temp Unroot and OTA survival options have been added. I think this might be useful for those of us who are rooted when getting the OTA update. I plan on trying it out.
I don't have a third party "root keeper" type application installed, is there any possibility that this is just as good?

Yeah, Superuser has to compete with SuperSu, that's why those new features are in there, SuperSu has them. And yes, OTA survival works better than Voodo Roor Keeper.

I wonder which might be better, voodoo root keeper or this? If there's even a difference.

The OTA survival on SuperSu and Superuser are slightly better than Voodo, as they automate some processes of regaining root, but it's the same concept.

i didnt even bother to look at the change log, i should have, im glad it is built in so now i dont have to use a third party.
Has anyone tested this on their AT&T S3? I'm rooted with stock recovery.

I am actually wondering if this works as well. Would be nice to unroot, get the update and reroot without having to redo everything ie home screen settings etc

I can't speak to other devices, but for my Transformer Infinity and Droid 4, Superuser's OTA Survival did nothing for me, and Voodoo worked perfectly.
if you have superuser in the system\app directory then you cant use the unroot as it needs to be in the \data\app directory for it to work. I tried it with both sueruser and supersu and each would only unroot if the superuser app was in the \data\app directory... i would move it their then reboot and do that... or just use the droid razr utility which will make it all stock.... best way really.
Actually, after searching around more, I think my problem may have been that the means of using the ota survival in superuser is spectacularly un-obvious and un-intuitive and nearly un-documented. I just tested using Voodo's temp unroot and then superuser to restore root and that worked.
For anyone else that finds Superuser's method confusing:
1) Before any update that might un-root your device, check the "ota survival" box in superuser
2) After an update that un-roots your device, open superuser and *uncheck* the "ota survival" box. This will restore your root and, for reasons that flabbergast me, REMOVE the backup, so ...
3) After restoring root, re-check the "ota survival" box
Compare this to Voodoo:
1) Create backup of su when rooted
2) When un-rooted, click "Restore Root"
Repeat just #2 when you get the next OTA
rooting after temp unroot
How do you root again after a temp unroot? unchecking the temp unroot doesnt work.. it does something, but afterwards the temp unroot is still checked. Also a phone restart doesnt help. Anyone else have this issue? (I'm on motorola defy+ with quarx jelly bean cyanogenmod)
temp unroot
No one can explain how to regain root over a SU temp unrooted phone?
So I was forced to do the update to 10G (P769) and lost all my apps and pretty much anything. Was curious to see if anyone would have a backup available to share and where they may have found it.
Thanks!
If this method works, then how come we are struggling to root this phone so hard?
voodoo rootkeeper should KEEP the root-backup, if it lost it then the root is just gone and your phone needs to be rooted again.
wait a min, you said you "were forced to update"? you mean via an ota update? this shouldn't loses root after installing voodoo rootkeeper and backing up root, i'm on p760 and kept root after ota to 10e
did you do a backup in voodoo?

I had used Voodo to back up my root when I learned about other people getting the 10G update on P769BK.. left my phone on to charge overnight and somehow it performed the update. Root keeper says I have no backup. =[
What I'm trying to do at the moment is I have a spare P769BK at my store (I work for T-Mo) which I have rooted, installed Voodo OTA, backed up and updated to 10G.
Was able to restore root on the store device and currently made a ADB backup of the device.. Looking into a way to modify that backup to insert Super SU and the su binary in /system/bin/ and restore on my current device. If that works then we will have a way to root 10G.
I'm VERY open to any input anyone has on this or anyone who has more experience in ADB backups.
Will OTA rootkeeper work with the I605VRAMC3 update or will I lose root and need to use another root method? Currently on Stock ROM with locked bootloader, rooted only.
To answer my own question, I just updated and root was successfully restored using OTA rootkeeper.
Thanks for sharing this info. Glad you were able to figure it out.

What rooting program are you using??? I've updated my phone and ready to root however I'm getting an error when trying to use No You Verizon Casual R478.
My phone was already rooted before updating, I used OTA rootkeeper to temporarily disable root before updating then restored root using the app. I originally rooted by flashing the root-injected firmware. When I bought the phone it was already on VRALL4, I flashed the root-injected VRALJB image then used OTA rootkeeper to disable root and updatedback to VRALL4. OTA rootkeeper work for the VRAMC3 update as well.
