Hi.
I have a quick question regarding loading a custom ROM onto my i9300. Do I have to load a new kernel with the ROM or can I use the stock 4.1.2 kernel that came with the device?
Thanks

Not really as long as the custom rom you'll be using is based on 4.1.2 you can either use a stock kernel or a custom one. However most custom rom developers recommend a custom kernel to be used since it provides better customization.

I just got the sgs2 from amazon, I checked the baseband and kernel, which says that I have UHKG7 (firmware) and UHKG4 (baseband).
I know this corresponds to the UH_MUL_KG7 version when I do the CF-Root. However, I was looking through the custom rom's section and most of the ROM's seem to be built off of "KI3"
Does this mean I should flash the KI3 version of CF-Root instead of the KG7 one? I want to be able to play around and try a bunch of custom rom's later. does it matter which CF-Root I flash at this point or do I HAVE to have the KI3 CF-Root to be able to flash the KI3-based custom roms?
Also, would flashing the KI3-based stuff mess up my phone?
Not new to flashing custom roms but I've never had a phone with this many kernel options/versions. Any help is appreciated guys, thanks.

It would make more sense to flash KI3 stock firmware root with KI3 followed by custom rom of choice .

OK, sorry for being so dense but one more question.
Say I go that way and flash KI3 stock then CF-Root for KI3....
then i flash a custom ROM, am I limited to custom roms that only work with KI3 kernel?
in other words, do i have to keep switching to different stock kernels as I try different custom roms?

Usually when you flahs a custom rom it comes with it´s own kernel so you dont have to worry. If the rom doesn´t come with it´s own kernel you may be able to use it with any kernel (few exceptions)

awesome, do i have to worry about the custom rom overwriting the CWM from cf-root?
Cwm is built into the kernel in samsung land, and most custom roms come with a kernel with Cwm.
Kernel version should be the same as rom version for stock roms/cf root. Custom roms often come with a recommended kernel.
You can move between newer and older stock roms via odin or restoring cwm backup, generally without wipe.

Hi,
I have two questions regarding the Android Kitchen, I would like to use my stock ROM and Stock Kernel and say take out some apps i don't want etc and add a few more.
So once i finish creating this rom and flashing it to my GS2, will this increase my binary counter? As I m not tinkering with Stock Kernel but the rom itself, I think it shouldn't but would like someone here to confirm this please?
Second question is can i just add say siyah's kernel with stock rom and build a new rom to flash on GS2, will that work that easily?
Thanks
V

If you mean flash siyah kernel to stock rom yes but it will increase rom counter .
Checkout Mobile Odin as well .

re
jje thanks for your reply,
What I meant was if I bind a siyah's kernel with a stock ROM inside the kitchen before flashing will that be easy or not?

Hello all,
I am a super newbee in this field ( please dont laugh ) ! I apologise if i have failed to see the solution for my queries in other threads
I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 with the following config:
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband Version : I9100DDLPA
Kernel Version : 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913 [email protected]#3
Build number : IML74K.XWLP7
I have already rooted the device with the help of posts on xda. I aspire to put a custom ROM of Jelly Bean in my phone. I have certain questions abt it.
1. Can someone suggest me an apt choice of ROM to suit my current build?
2. will i be able to come back to my stock firmware incase of any problem with the custom ROM. If yes, how ?
3. can i partition my ROM and have to Androids running ? Custom ICS and JellyBean ?
Please help. Thanks in advance.
JB ROMs are still in development stages and need some time to get fully baked.
If you want to try one CM is great.
And you can return back to ICS anytime.
To dual boot JB and ICS you need to flash Siyah kernel.
I would suggest you to flash (install) CM9 for few days. Bcoz its better to be using known stable build for regular use. You will get an idea of what to expect of AOSP ROMS and what are their limitations.
Then you can plunge into exciting world of flashing nightlies (less stable) builds.
You can always go back to default samsung roms if CyanogenMod roms dont suite you. There are lot of custom Samsung rom based roms to choose from with very good customizations.
But before you do any flashing of rom, BACKUP YOUR CURRENT ROM.

Better flash Siyah first...
http://gokhanmoral.com
After Flashing Download the Custom Rom.Zip File You Want to Flash..
Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery (Siyah kernel's) Recovery...
Flash the Zip from Here
Peace
Hit Thanks & It will Disappear

I am about to flash my galaxy nexus to convert it to yajku, but for that i need to be sure if phone is running stock rom, and i don't know any way to determine if it is on CUSTOM or STOCK. Can anyone please help me how to check for CUSTOM or STOCK.
Thanks
simply
simply go to settings and the about section of your phone and you would know.....most custom roms have a specific signature.... for example it will say neox rom or paranoid rom ...............stock roms just simply have the android version your running and version numbers........hope this helps

If software number is 4.16.401.10
can't anyone upload a custom rom with that signature?
For my samsung galaxy S4 you go into settings>more>about device>status>and on device status it should tell you if you are on official or custom. If you are on custom you are likely to be using some kind of different ROM. I had custom on 4.4.2 when I rooted but when I upgraded via Odin I got official.
