Why P? Why not S,Acro S or Ion? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Earlier this morning I was browsing the internet looking for a 2nd hand Xperia Acro S or Xperia S.
And then I started to browse the Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion Forum here on XDA.
Sad to say that there are only few customized ROMs/Kernels on those devices. Those devices are
even more powerful than Xperia Go, Sola, U and P. But why the Developers doesn't seem like to
explore the powerful devices and they keep focusing on the low-end devices.
Well I'm lucky I have an Xperia P and lots of to choice what to customized.
Planning to buy Xperia Acro S.
Hope they will focus on some high end devices too

so since you mentioned you like it. why? why xperia p?
easy to customized? why do you think there are only 2 kernel available on the xperia s/acro s forum?
some of those kernels has stop on developing
@jatinrungta why sp? why dead?

acro s is 2012 but sp is 2013 phone. S is not to be supported beyond 4.3 I think but Sp gurantees at least 4.4 and is very new in terms of both specs and looks. In fact the development is on full swing, you can see S just has 2 kernels but Sp has many

I think sp is best or what is your budget?

i'm viewing the SP and i know that it is really ahead of specs than any other 2012 xperia phones.
but the problem is the display. do you think the TFT capacitive touchscreen of Sony Xperia SP is not worth than Xperia Acro S or Xperia S?
some have;
Super AMOLED
IPS TFT PureMotion HD
LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen
True HD-IPS + LCD capacitive touchscreen
the display is 10% why im still not be able to say Xperia SP is better than 2012 phones
What kind of screen type will you prefer for your smartphones? And why?

no xperia has amoled
and display should have no problem at all!
it is the specs that matter!

Why P is good?
Steel body
Beautiful and highly visible display
Nice overall feel
Good battery (small but works well, yes it could alwys be better...)
Reasonable price (especially now compared to one year earlier)
It depends on where you come from! I switched from iphone 3G and my first though was: whooooa this is a PHONE. Beautiful in hardware, software.
However there is a huge downside unfortunately:
many users have reported call lags -> grab an independent one with unlockable bootloader and use CM that way you can avoid it and enjoy lightning speed with a nice, albeit different design.

Upgrading to Xperia S

Ok guys, sorry to post this here but there's no where else right now.
I am so excited about the Xperia S, it isn't funny!! The dual core processor and 1gb internal memory is huge and just what this phone needs!
Who else is excited about this phone, what could be the pros and cons against the Arc?
Let me know what you think,
CheerS D
Not really excited.
Look at the "old" SGS II or newer Galaxy Note. They should beat the Xperia S. And no, I'm not a Sammy fanboy.
Dualcore, 1GB RAM. Xperia S isn't new.
Cons:
No sd card slot

Another cons:
Design and price. Haha

Price is totally a pro and not a con.
Imo cons are:
No sd card slot
non removeable battery
not as sexy as the Arc (couldn't be possible )
Pros:
Everything else.

but he asked with the comparison to arc. So arc definitely wins in term of price.
Xperia S over arc:
- Higher resolution screen.
- Supposedly better camera + 1080p video.
- Dual-core processor.
- Big RAM.
- 32 GB internal memory.
- Design has that "wow" factor especially with that transparent glass in the middle and 3 LED lights in it.

Xperia arc over S:
- Lighter.
- Thinner.
- More affordable.
- MicroSD card slot.
Things that matter me the most are the processor and high screen resolution. Mind you, I watch 4-5 hours of HD (720p/1080p) video content on my phone every day and not having to reencode them would be very helpful, so your needs will differ.

I'd get the SGS II if it's not running TouchWiz. Currently I'm thinking of getting a Galaxy Nexus. Upgrading to Xperia S would yield me an equal-sized screen and Xperia ion's out of reach (since it's US only).
quite disappointed when heard that Xperia S has no microSD slot and changeable battery. i will hold my arc until another model moves me

upto 1.8GB for App Storage,
32GB Internal memory via eMM
people keep getting this wrong and before you ask how i know i used the phone at CES and its also plastered across the white paper available from the SE Dev World.
The Phone is great and i cant wait to get my own as soon as my rep drops its off.
Why can't they just improve the battery .... Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX has 3300 mAh battery without affecting the size of the device ... I really wish Xperia S had that battery
Xperia S
-Bravia Engine
-4.3" 720x 1280(342ppi) Reality Display
-1.5Ghz Dual-core
-Adreno 220 GPU
-1GB Ram
-1.8GB Internal Memory(User Available)
-32GB eMMC(Embedded Memory)
-12MP Exmor-R with 1080p Video and Fast Capture
-1.3MP Front Camera with 720p Video
-Anti Stain Shell(Dirt Repellent and UV Active)
-Fast Charge Capability(Pro's of non replaceable battery)
-NFC, GLONASS, WIFI Direct, Gyro
-Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
-PlayStation Certified(It's getting some Traction now lots of PS1 Games and some PSP Games Available)
-Price is just Right

What stopping you from buying an Xperia S? No Micro SD card slot and a Replaceable Battery?
but for me I think that 32GB is Big enough for me, including the 1.8GB for the Apps to be installed, My Arc got 16GB and I have lots of HD Games and 720p Video's I still have 3GB free
and having a non replaceable battery is not all Cons
I rarely remove my Battery and Micro SD Card, the only time I removed the Battery and Micro SD Card when i upgraded it to 16GB and Inserted my SIM

Hi guys thanks for your replies, by the way, in a girl
I am mostly excited for the internal memory upgrade, better battery and dual core processors. In all honesty my arc is laggy at times, the battery only lasts a day, and I'm tired of no front facing camera. These were the things that excited me the most, the design is nice too. Don't get me wrong I do love my arc, it just seems to be slow at times, I have no idea how to use custom roms for it either

There'll be another method to do this.
Maybe a long press power button, maybe something else.
I'll probably wait for the performance of Arc when it runs official ICS. If it's good enough for me then I guess I'll have to skip xperia s and stick with arc for a little longer until SE releases quad core and renew my data contact.

Micro-SIM is much worse than no card slot for me. Now sony is copying iphone pathetic there is no excuse for having micro-sim and non replaceable battery in a relatively thick phone.
Infact given the thickness of this phone there should have been bigger battery as well.

Xperia GX (Hayabusa) and Xperia SX (Komachi) are official

Apparently, it is only stated that they are specifically designed for Japanese market. Not sure about whether it will be release internationally with different design (Xperia S for example). Well, if it is the same design as these pictures below, I would be disappointed. Looks much uglier than S and Ion (Though GX has the convex back like Arc and SX front looks somehow resemble to iPhone 4).

Not really minor, Qualcomm S3 of XPS is nothing compared to other dual-core, but Qualcomm S4 is the king of dual-core right now
The screen size is also larger with very marginal increase in size (128mm -> 131mm in height)
So there's no any news about the SD card slot?cause If it has like SD card slot that'd be epic..
haha what minor update??seriously then why does it score alot better than tegra 3? that's funny.
GX just made me wow, effin' love it
hope it sees international release sometime soon, I'm really looking an xperia device to replace my old X10
****inn ****!! The ugly's level is over 9000!!!!!!!!
they all look pretty ugly to be honest. I don't think the picture is real tho.
pictures are real, they are same as the one post on sony japan website
Hmmm...
Well Okay...
To me, the upgrade isn't that much comparing what you sacrifice in design. If those are the final devices (yea, I know, I say this a lot between the other threads) Sony seems to have ditched the design factor and the light bar.
I'm glad the GX has the Arc curve though, so the Arc people will be happy. It just doesn't do anything more than that design-wise in my opinion.
It's a bit of a bummer that they dropped the light bar, and are going down the generic form path :/.
It's what I thought though, the GX does indeed appear to be the S with an upgraded core, so the deciding factor would really be design (S) or if you are a spec-junkie the S4 (GX). Yes, the screen is larger, but it has onscreen buttons, so you lose screen real-estate.
All in all, I'm keeping my S for two years . I am curious to see what next year will bring.
Final thought (or just something I forgot to add ):
I wonder if it has a card slot in it, because that is quite small if it's not expandable, which would be another big deciding factor.
Xperia GX
I think the GX is way sexier than the Xperia S & thinner well most of the phone is. I so hope this is released in the Uk, but only if the battery is as least 2000 mAH

Well, at that size you just do not have that many options. If they add the bar, already long phone will get even longer.
But it is a shame anyway. They could at least "fake" something resembling the light bar, not necessary transparent, as it would be great notification light. Something most phones nowadays are sorely missing.
I just hope, that this is not the real "hayabusa".

This is a bit of an afterthought, as I am just looking through that pdf now.
I thought it was just the picture, but the SX has a rather large space between the earpiece and the screen, giving it a very long effect. Kinda like the old pre-smartphone candybar phones.
Maybe it was the last little SE thing before they were taken over, to launch the S and such with the light bar. But on these devices it's like they were designed when the creative department was on vacation :/.
Even the Sola (which I thought was launched as a new tech gimmick) had a sort of light bar to it and I felt was better designed.
The GX and SX are nice devices, but I wouldn't consider them flagships like some people are saying, they seem to be rushed to me, I don't know...
The big upper bezel in the SX is only because of the Japan-specific features. They have to put the TV antenna and IR blaster somewhere now don't they
The GX is perfect for an international release. No Japan-specific features, no carrier branding so far. The only thing they'd have to change is the modem, and that is just a slightly different SoC. I highly suspect the GX to be released near the end of the summer in EMEA. The US can f* off, they get enough nice exclusive phones already anyway

If rumours about 1750mAh are true, then I am afraid it is dead for me. And probably to many others outside of japan.
Even if it has replaceable battery.
I was really hoping to see just an updated Xperia S
I love the design of XS, these new ones, they does'nt look premium or even a little bit special
Sony has to learn that 3 models per year is just right
A high-end, mid-end, low-end and at the max, a new Xperia Play
all other techs developped during the year must wait to the next's years flagship device.
I'll probably stay with my Arc for a year or 2
waiting for a not too big phone, quad-core, better battery life, and why not, the same technology used with the Xperia Active?
Woo, I'm glad I have an Xperia S. Those things are butt-ugly.
Seriously Sony? Get rid of Ericsson and release one of the dopest looking phones on the market - only to release some of the ugliest phones right after?
This does not bode well.

I think its pretty minor. The only thing the krait does better are benchmarks. The S is already really fast, but it could have better memory latency and bandwidth which the GX does have. The S never has lag in my opinion and unless you want a bigger epeen, you really don't need the new core for most tasks. I do like the look of the new casing alot, it is how the Xperia S should have been made. I am not a fan of the arc design though and the screen is too damn big. 4.3 is perfect.
The idea that the gx will come packed with an s4 processor is right now, just pure speculation.
There would be no phones released this year by Sony with radically different hardware from either the s or the ion.
To do that would be to diminish and even you could argue make a mockery of the term flagship.
They cannot release a new flagship barely 5 months after the launch of the s.
I know it was disappointing to see the S launched with the s3 but I'm afraid Sony users will just have to make do with that this year.
Sony always cheap out on processors. They did it last year with the arc and it's the same story now.
I don't know maybe they do it to stay competitive on pricing or to just keep the price down considering the 12mp camera on board.
Don't forget that the recommended retail price for the xperia s is £460 as compared to the one x which is £480.
The fact you can find the S for much less is due to the fact the big retailers have refused that price because of the great difficulties they had selling the hopeless phones Sony Ericsson released last year.
So you could say, the S is having to clean up the mess left behind by all those competitively weak devices released last year.
Dual core made more of an impression last year than quad core will make this year because android really need multi threading. After two two cores, anything else is just a bonus but not essential.
By that, releasing single core phones last year was just plain ridiculous.

Well, there is one fairly significant difference: the LTE.
The only way to go with S3 would be to integrate some "external" 3rd party solution, like some "early birds" from HTC or Samsung did.
Which would be a huge undertaking with their share of problems. And I doubt such small device as SX would be doable at all. This is before we even consider such things as battery life.
Similarly, ST-Ericsson NovaThors with LTE won't be available until 2013.
To do that would be to diminish and even you could argue make a mockery of the term flagship.

I have an impression, the Xperia S was rushed emergency release. Just to have something to sell *now*, and not a part of normal development pipeline. If so, the xs will be pushed to background as soon as real flagships are ready.

The battery is not ideal , but since I am outside all day the screen is a godsend, the phone is great design and quality wise. I do run sync and screen at 100% and I can usually get to the evening, the phone does charge back up very quickly though, 20 minutes and I am back over 50%.

With my average usage the phone lasts about 2 days without charging. Seems to be quite smooth and béazing fast (coming from the X10.) I like this phone because I needed the bright display too cuz of my work and I'm very satisfied with it. On the contra I can point out Sony and their "always-being-late" with the updates. JB is out since some time now and we're only getting ICS now for a phone that was created in the ICS era (correct me if I'm wrong.)
As a summary I can only say what I already stated, that I'm satisfied with the phone, cuz it applies perfectly for my needs.
Battery is not good for pro uses! My data is always on and I play angry birds often but I just charge my phone onetime In a day!
Its based on your use! If you want play heavy games like asphalt you will have problem with battery but performance is amazing and you can trust your phone to play them!
My opinion is buy it if battery is not so important for you and if it does matter buy galaxy nexus or SII or xperia s!
But I suggest you p for white magic tech and a lot of amazing things that you can not use them on the other phones!

Buy the xperia p without second thoughts, its the best phone i have used

Thanks guys for the suggestions... I have narrowed it down to Xperia P or Xperia S . Galaxy S II was an option but I always like Sony cause of Sony's stylish cellphones... But I am a power user. So I am thinking of going with the Xperia S.
What do you think about Xperia S?
Sent from my LT18i using Tapatalk 2
I own both XS AND XP, after using the Xperia P I regret buying the XS, the build quality and screen are a lot better than the XS! Even though the prossesor is clocked at 1Ghz it performs similar to XS, hell even ICS feels smoother on the P! Thinking about to sell my S now :-/

I also love my Xperia P. The display is awesome. First I also thought about the S2, but with all the plastic and the ultra - contrast it looks like a toy. Not to forget the wear of amoled displays. The Xperia P is fine, only thing that disturbs me is the lack of custom roms.
But AOPK and FXP said that they are working on it.
I'm really looking forward to CM10.
Thanks a lot.
Yes I agree there is very few custom ROM and kernel for XP ...hope FXP starts work on the P soon ..I am using CM 10 in my ARC S .& JB is just too good.it feels like I am using some kind of super fast phone..Xperia P needs more support..
I am thinking of getting the P & my bro is taking the S .
What abt battery life ? Am really concerned about battery life of XP ?

[Q] MDPI xperia smartphones and kitkat

Hello forum.
I was wondering will this mdpi phones get Kit Kat (4.4) update. I own SE Live with Walkman and I was searching a little on google about this update and I saw that "outdated" phones will get this update too. So my question is: Is there anyone who can answer this question?
Thank You.
I think they will not get the upgrade to Android Kitkat. If Sony didn't give us the Jelly Bean then how about the Kitkat?

if were lucky & find some one to develop it -to use- on our devices, like now mike with JB 4.3 does, maybe yes , but it wil be unofficial..
other point is the HW side if there big problems with some incombability or other probs even very good devs cant do nothing-
at now all is speculation. lets wait as big brother google releases the 4.4 repo than we can say SOMETHING aboth 4.4 on our devices
Hopefully someone will release a Rom
Our 2011 devices never get old

Maybe you are right, but here (goo. gl/s1Myfp) they say that: "... Xperia mid-range phones: Xperia M, C, SP, L, S, SL, U and many more" will get this update. I don't know what day think with "many more" but I hope that they will make official update for our phones. Google says: For Android KitKat: “It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”. I really hope that we will get this update

i think many more just for Sony phone, not Sony Ericsson phone (like we use now :good but just hope for amazing developer made this update for our 2011 MDPI Xperia :victory:
Apparently KitKat will have a lower memory footprint than previous Android versions-but this is speculation as of now. Even so it is the kernel mainly which has lowered RAM usage hence if we (Xperia 2011) were to receive KitKat (which were not) then we would also need the new kernel-which obviously isn't going to happen. I personally don't see Sony updating older devices to KitKat even though it is more suitable for lower end devices-this includes our 2011 Xperia's but also 2012 Xperia's, I can only see the 2013 range getting updated to KitKat.

How many updates where done by Sony for the Mini Pro, two? From Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich? Did they skip Honeycomb?

Ah I see, thank you. So one update from Gingerbread to ICS. Was there ever a Sony device with longer support? I guess Nexus devices are the ones to choose if you want a long term support?

Its not only about Sony. Samsung also does the same. its a clever tactic to promote the new devices made by the two companies by reducing long term support to older devices. That is where rooting, flashing custom roms come into picture. Of course, more than long term support NEXUS has lot of other advantages as well

Hmmm...ALL phone manufacture do the same, not just Sony and Samsung...its not clever tactic but it is just Marketing Strategy...every penny you spend buying a new phone is a profit for them...if they keep updating older devices for FREE to keep up with the current android evolution, then who want to buy their new phone lineup?? people will stick with their old devices rather than spending money to buy a new one...the more user stick with their old devices, the LESS profit the manufacture made....smartphone are not like a car....
Nexus in the other hand is different...Nexus is the FLAGSHIP for GOOGLE...as the FLAGSHIP, Nexus phone will always get the first/latest update from GOOGLE...

[Q] x reality engine not work

Hey guys sorry for my english but I'm italian... Today I have seen xperia z2 but it have serious problem... I have zperia z and when I use bravia engine there is a big difference in the photos... Whit x reality engine on the xperia z2 there isn't difference why?
Did you unlock your bootloader? If not, maybe a factory reset of your Z2 could solve the problem.

Z2 has IPS screen.
It's ridiculous to compare those two devices and their screen.
Z2 has awesome screen, colours and viewing angle...

Wow, you have a piece of paper saying its tft, sorry, i was wrong, you are obviously right, that paper cant lie.
How about official sony webpage?
http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/products/phones/xperia-z2/features/#Display
How about any mobile review website? They all clearly say its IPS, so stop it, you are wrong.

But
Don't you see that they are equal(z and z2)? The z2 has only brighter color but the display are identical... Ok stop
Don't know why I even bother but OK...
I have Z2 in my hands and that's quite enough.
If you just check viewing angle you'll understand it's not TFT

So, no matter the screen a IPS screen is or not, it's a TFT. But the screen on Z2 uses the IPS technique.
All these screens, including HTC's SLCD3, iPhone, xperia s/z/z1, are TFTs, but only with different techniques.
Of course, Samsung uses Super Amoled, they are different.
Before criticize others, please search on www.google.com.
I know that mr. Smartass, and it doesnt change a thing, ips is not = tft, its different technology.
