I have trouble with my signal at work and installed the new mj7 radio hoping that would help. Band 4 seems like it's going in and out around my work but when I did get on band 4 I immediately ran a speed test. I was getting close to 30mbps but got 2-5mbps on the upload speed. Even the needle for speedtest.net was glitchy on the upload but not on the download. I thought the download was the signal and the upload was the phone processing the data. Is there something I can do to improve my upload speed or a site someone can point me to that will explain download/upload speeds? Sorry if this is a noob question but I'm learning

Upload is hit and miss for me (when I actually can get a decent connection) I wouldn't complain about the upload if I could get a download speed over 6mbps. The slow upload only occurs at work?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Seems like it's only at work. Didn't really do a bunch of test prior to this aws band coming out. Never had a problem with signal unless at work. Hopefully there still ironing out this new band and it will get better. Just wondering if there was something I could do to increase the upload speed. Like I said even the Guage is glitchy when speed test is doing the upload speed.

Hey Joey,
Is this the file you use to update to MJ7 radio: 1545VRUEMJ7_modem.zip?
Also are you on MDK or a later version?
I first used the modem file that was posted in a mj7 thread when it first came out. Then I re installed it when surge came out with his in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487298

Wow, I got 4G LTE from T-Mobile in San Francisco now! Before it was just H+. Thanks!
One thing I had to switch to is use fast.t-mobile.com APN.
First speed test and I got download speed of 13 Mbps and upload speed of 2.61 Mbps.

I am using ClockworkMod 6.0.4.4. I just installed Rom Manager from Play Store to install the CM Rom.
Looks like 4G LTE signal at my house is pretty bad. Getting -116dBm and once in a while data goes off.

Strange, instead of mobile data going off, shouldn't it switch to H+ instead of losing data connection.

ok, looks like it does switch back to H+ now.. so weird..

Did you do the little speed hack in my post? It really increases your speeds dramatically. There is a thread about it here in the note forum. Note sure what that hack is called officially. Your speeds are what I typically get on att around here without lte. Tmo's hspa speeds kill att's. Just follow my instructions and give it a try. If you don't like it, you can always go back to whatever it was.

Could just be the 3g connection is to slow and it times out. Go get a BigMac and use their wifi
Would it work better if I turned on my hotspot and used my computer or not so much

Your hotspot will still only give you 3g, run down to McDonalds or starbucks and use the wifi there
I've noticed similar issues when trying to download large files (like ROM's) over WiFi at home. Not usually an issue but it happens every so often. Never an issue using my laptop, though.

Does anyone else get variable download speeds from the play store? Most of the time I get 3-4 mb/s but sometimes it drops to only 2-300 kb/s...it happens on both my 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz networks (same router). Just curious if that's typical behavior for the play store or if it's my wifi being fickle on aosp.
Sorry to hijack the thread, been wondering for a while but since it's not a huge deal I didn't want to start a new one.

Okay, so you're saying an area that doesn't have LTE. What if you do have LTE? I have LTE in places around Houston, but I'd love for my HSPA to be faster. Will this break my LTE?
It's so awesome. I'm at my friend's apt right now and I seen 24.8Mbps. Like WTF!? \('o')/
It does say adding something and not just replacing. I guess I can give this a try right now. I'll post back to see if my LTE falters.
EDIT: Well I've added the new APN. Everytime I try and select it, it jumps back to the default APN. Maybe it will switch when I leave this LTE area. I'll try then.
How do I get to the area where I add the apn setting?

I've gone back and forth on the change and at times, the upload speed is quite miserable. I've seen some uptick in the download speeds for the better on the order of going from around 2.5 - 2.9M up to 3.6 - 4.6M. Certainly not the increases some of you are seeing, but I'll keep my eye on this. Thanks nonetheless!

People I would really appreciate your feedback on this, during the past 3 weeks I have noticed that my download speeds had been drastically slow even when I have 4G and speed test coming back on results over 4MB download per second I see this is mostly during some times of the day, late at night it is fine, as an example when I tried to download an app from the market or as well when I'm using my phone as a hot spot it takes over a minute to download 2 MB of data. I have unlimited data and my friend my cousin and his wife are having the same issue, I was having it on my S3 now on my S4, my friend and cousin on their Note 2 and my cousins wife on her iphone 5 we all have unlimited data and now we are wondering if verizon is playing a dirty trick on us.... does anybody here are seeing this problem? are you unlimited or limited? I have called Verizon and they say they are only throttling 3G, not on 4G I already did their stupid apps deletes and resets factory resets etc etc, and I don't want to root my S4 yet in case they blame it on the phone and want me to exchange it.
Thanks,
A worried data devourer
I've got unlimited and use about 50gb-200gb a month. No throttling. Chicago.

I am also having this problem, especially when I download apps in the market. I never had any problems with my S3. I wonder if it is due to the new NFC SIM. I am going to verizon and asking them for the regular sim and see if it solves the problem. I really hope it is not the phone. Also I used to get full 4G signal at home, now I get only 4 bars, it even drops to 3 sometimes.
I don't know what an nfc sim is but I'm running the s4 using the same sim card i had in my galaxy nexus since it first came out. So if that's not an nfc sim...

I noticed the speed fluctuations when the Google play store started with the new updates. It would be with various apps updating and it would be on the network and it was also affecting speeds while on WiFi. It would take 5 min to download a 2 MB file that should only take a few seconds. I do not think the throttle is through the carrier but it may be on the google servers depending on which one you are connected to. I noticed recently that it has gotten better but there could be maintenance going on that is slowing down services and also with the weather around the country there could by bypasses going on that can affect downloads. Just my guess.
Just popped my sim into the galaxy nexus still experienced slower speeds. Maybe the weather or some other factor is at play

It might just be your location. If anyone in the range of the cell tower your phone is connected to is using a lot of bandwidth or it is heavily populated with 4G users, you will feel the effects of it. Have you replicated it in a completely different area that's less populated and is greater than 5 miles away?

Verizon only throttles 3g and only when the tower being used is overloaded. During my year and a half with them I have never been throttled. I mostly always get 4g and I always pull about 15mbps and 1-2 on 3g

We can get 3g roaming on Verizon, yes, but you risk being cut off of Sprint if you use over 300mb of roaming, or even more roaming data than Sprint data. I have received a warning before. I was able to get roam control to work on zv6, but have been unable to get it to work on zv8, which let's you switch to roaming whenever you want, not just forcing you to always roam to Verizon like the 00001 prl does. I only got a letter for one line that had 2 consecutive months of roaming over 300mb, and more roaming data than Sprint data, though.
What's funny though, is on a line that I used 10gb of roaming, but over 30gb of Sprint data, I never received a warning letter.
