There's a leaked Samsung Android 4.4 schedule on the net and it points to January for the S4 and N3. Going by the title at the top of the screenshot/picture it's the international variant S4/N3. US will be even longer. I'm quite pissed about this as these are the flagship devices and should be upgraded MUCH sooner. Thoughts?

Anybody complaining about non nexus devices not getting updates instantly have clearly not been paying attention the last 3 years. January is earlier than I would have predicted.

Not sure how big of a deal KitKat really will be,...
I installed some of the newer files [Email, Calendar, QuickOffice] from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2506623
To get some of the newer available apps, but moving to 4.4 washes away the hard work that Devs [Hashcode, beans, and Hyper] have already invested into 4.3.
I find Root and ROMs much more beneficial than the OS,....for now. De-bloating and customization is key!!
4.4 literally brings no new Ingenuity or function.
give me a break; give me a break; don't break me off a piece of that kit kat rom.

That's not entirely true, it does bring host card emulation to allow NFC devices without a secure element to use Google Wallet.

Doesn't 4.4 officially have like emojis integrated through the entire system? I could have sworn that's what I could have sworn I read. If it's true, that's enough for me to want the update

4.4 also allows you to record what your screen is doing natively. That is actually pretty awesome for helping give instructions on how to install etc.

Maybe they will mess up and leave some sort of exploit in the kernel or something so we can start flashing kernels and recoveries on this thing. Im starting to miss AOSP after a few weeks without my Note 2.....

Still isn't the same as having a bootloader bypass or unlock to truly run aosp.. heck we'd already be on kit kat if we had this that's where i will donate my funds to.

Are you kidding? ART is potentially huge. I'd rather Samsung skip over 4.3 and go straight to 4.4 for this reason.

I really had to think about it when I chose to get the Note 3, but I figure the features on this phone are pretty amazing, and the way its looking is that phones will mostly be locked in the future. ATT is locking theirs, Verizon is locking theirs, Im sure the rest will follow. If two out of the four major US carriers are doing this, there is a good chance that someone will find a way around it. For the time being, we have Hashcode who has found away around the lock for the most part. We just need to get something like Loki or KEXEC working.
My other option was to keep a phone that has outdated resolution, software and hardware..... I had the Note 2 for a year and was ready to move on.

That part was for my Note 2. :cyclops:
We have no one to blame but ourselves. We accept the fact that the US carriers bend us over the barrel and do what they want to us. We accept it everyday by using their services, paying their crazy stupid prices and by accepting their restrictive contracts. Anyone who expects a US Wireless Carrier to offer an update let alone a Samsung update within a reasonable time frame is simply crazy.
The only reason the HTC One is getting it so fast is . . . well they don't have many phones to actually update or are worth updating so they have to keep pushing updates out to stay relevant. Of course the HTC one didn't get 4.2.2 we got stuck with 4.1.2 until we got 4.3. Of course I gave up on my HTC One long ago.

Am I the only one that feels like the S4 has been partially abandoned by most devs [MK2]? Like AOSP is a dream we can say good bye to?
AOSP FOR MK2 IS THE MAIN POINT OF THIS DISCUSSION. STOP MENTIONING MDK
If you have an MDK S4 there are aosp ROMs available. If you aren't on MDK you're stuck with TW. I've actually seen a jump in the amount of developers in the past couple months.

And also more Devs are making ROMs generic now... Like liquid smooth. Its one file for all s4's and it detects which carrier/boot loader your phone is and installed the propper files.
This opens up many more options for the future of mdk s4 at least.. Philz recovery also has this now too so more and more are starting to use this method

Yeah I remember you saying that before, but this is exactly the situation that can happen. I would've never bought a Samsung device if I didn't love Touchwiz. Sure I run AOSP a lot, I'm on Google Edition right now, but if something happened to this phone I would be perfectly content with stock Touchwiz.
If you're going to stick on Verizon, it seems Motorola is the only company coming out with AOSP phones on this network.

They're selling for less than I purchased it on contract. Which is also a bummer. Honestly If there was some for of aosp like GPe port or a kexec method I'd really love this phone. Indeed indeed. I'm hoping that you guys will be successful.
If only bypassing the whole locked os was possible and just booting from an SD card (like the HD2), or kinda like what they did on the touchpad.
Just re-write the whole system. Seems like that would be just as easy.

Unfortunately I cant find the right resistor to short to start the boot from SD process, though im still looking. The boot from SD is being tested on the note 3 today by some others so we'll see how that goes and go from there I guess.
I wish Samsung was as helpful as HP was with the touchpad, well that and a device was found with android already on it to help jumpstart that process.

I think if you are confident enough to do the modifications you should do it, what can happen is a soft brick which can be fixed with Odin. Hardware bricks are rare. Though you should decide for yourself, the only thing I'm telling you is that there's no point to wait as long as you want to do it and you know what you're doing. If you need help you can ask me anytime

Sudden death shouldn't be a problem with newer firmwares, but other hardware issues are relatively rare, so I'd go ahead my phone stayed stock for approximately 6 - 7 hours.

No never. I had a SanDisk SD card fail on me, but that was replaced under warranty but nothing Samsung related.
But it's your warranty so bear in mind that they may reject any claim, although in the UK the fact that you've modified software does not give them the right to decline a hardware claim.

I don't think you should be that afraid of doing it. The chance of a fail is very low and the sudden death syndrome has been fixed long time ago. If you really want it, give it a shot... Personally I've never had any hardware related problems while flashing ROMs

when u are ready to root and flash custom rom, flash a custom recovery like cwm too. NANDROID BACK UP straight away after flashing custom recovery. The cyanogenmod installer is safe to use. I have personally used it and it was smooth. Back up ur efs too. If u dun know wat is efs, go read on it. Good luck rooting and flashing. It is safe unless u dun follow instructions or read carefully.
I'm just asking this, not downing Cyanogen as I'm sure they have their hands full already, but is anyone else like me sitting around twiddling their thumbs and constantly checking when Cyanogen will release us a good blend of Vanilla goodness to replace this crappy Touchwiz (MOD EDIT) that Samsung always uses??

First of all, please tone it down. No need to use those references. (I'm going to edit out in a second.)
Second, I'm working with Tom Marshall from CyanogenMod who is doing the bringup.
We have boot since last week and as of about 10 mins ago working wifi. Calls and Data okay on Sprint but that's because we're both using that variant. I added the GSM ril blobs so theoretically it should work as well.
(And thank Tom for getting boot, I would have kept missing that I forgot 2 changes to a file that was holding that up. He caught my mistake in less than an hr last week.)
Now the bad news. It's still in bringup and has work to be done.
Rest assured it's being worked on.
Garwynn! Thank Jesus you're doing it, I remember you from the s4, used a lot of your earlier work on there. Anyways thanks for helping developing it, I can't wait!!

Glad we have a CM employee who can spend time on this at work honestly.
Noobnl did most of the bringup for the S4 and I'm glad to have gotten as far as I did.
But it always helps to have more eyes working on problems to hopefully resolve them! :highfive:
Few more issues ironed out today thanks to Tom mainly.
USB storage verified, GPS verified, a few errors have been ironed out.
The big known issues so far are camera (need some code changes to resolve missing symbols) and audio (phone mic doesn't seem to work, speakers out and BT mic/speakers working).
As far as devices we still need fingerprints for ATT, Canadian Bell and any others beyond Sprint, T-Mo, Verizon and kltexx (which is oddly SM-G900F according to what I got.) That should hopefully ensure that when it comes out it's ready for trying on other devices.

Yep. Because Cyanogen employees are working on this I'm deferring to their judgement on whether to post anything yet. Think if camera gets solved you may see a posting.
AOKP built but something not right on radio as carrier doesn't show and calls stick.

Garwynn you never cease to impress. Thanks for the update. I honestly can't wait to try what you and Tom have been baking over there in your kitchen

Ok, just checking in here, I have roms built for this device, TMO and the International flavor.
I see root has been established as well as a recovery method, am I right here?
I will need a couple testers. PM me if anyone is interested in getting VisionX rolling here.
Putting the finishing touches on this rom now...

I really appreciate it, umm we need to get this rom posted very soon, so lets run it up the flagpole and see who salutes, VisionX s4 turned out to be successful, I see no reason why it can't be done here, I will start with the official TMO release, followed by the international one.:good::good:

these are really great Ax. you should definitely think about building the S5 for the note 3. also the S5 will most likely get a software update tomorrow as at Uncarrier they said it will be added to the list of voLTE capable phones.
