I rooted my GS4 a few monthes ago and when i try to do a system update it restarts the phone, goes into recovery and begins installing the update. About a quarter of the way though it says "error" and aborts. This happens every time i try to update. Last night i attempted to unroot in SuperSU, restarted the phone and tried to update again. Still giving me the error. Also this morning the phone is generally laggy especially while typing (odd because not is much running) and texts take 10-15 minutes to send. Can someone help me i forgot a lot about rooting since i did it a few monthes ago and would appreciate some assistance. thanks!

Umm... 4.4 doesn't exist for the phone. Otherwise, check any one of the MANY thread about the 4.THREE update that are around. Try to just use the no-wipe Odin image. Root is never guaranteed.

There are no data wipes orginal odin images over in android dev. Usually trying to update while rooted will fail. There is a guide as well in android dev for updating to mj7 and keeping root.
Hope this helps.

Looking for some help. Trying to install new update, but keeps failing with the android logo and a triangle with exclamation mark after attempting to install. Not sure what I hit but when taking battery out got the following screen. I was on 1.57 with gladroot. Had to sbf flash during the original update process some time ago as didnt get run scripts correctly first time through
Flash back to 26, then 57, then 83. Clean and fresh update is what you need.

had a feeling that is what was going to be said.. going to leave it until I have more time, dont feel like sitting and setting my phone back to how I want it.
When the triangle and exclamation appears you don't have to take out the battery. Only touch the right low corner of the screen and the reboot display appears. I had the same problem at first but the information appeared indicated me what was the problem. Once corrected the update ran well.

I've done it so many times myself now, but I like tinkering. The day I got beta I flashed back to 4.1.26 three times while at work before I ended up being successful with everything because I kept making "operator errors"! I planned for this and took my wall charger to work so I could boot into recovery. Took me over an hour each time to get fully updated! lol
Yeah, you have to flash to a clean version. Most likely you have a mod installed on your phone, and you can update with a mod on your phone.
Are either enabling sideloading or adding the tethering apn that gladroot does for you considered a mod? Just curious what I'm in for when I try to go from rooted 1.57 to 1.83 OTA
Ok, so my phone is stuck trying to install the damn OTA update even though I rejected it. It apparently self downloaded a few days later. I'm running an XDABolt ROM, can't remember which, but it's basically stock Sense just debloated. When I power the phone on, it boots up, but then power cycles a few seconds later and tries to install the update. It freezes a few seconds into the cycle. Is there anything I can do besides wiping the phone? And will wiping it even work? I neglected to do a backup in the last few weeks, and I'd rather not lose any of my changes since my last backup.
Thanks for any help.
Nevermind, I bit the bullet and just factory reset, seems to be OK now.
Thanks anyways.
Long story short when I first bought my Note 2 a couple months back I decided I would try and root. I had never attempted something like this before and didn't make it very far before I decided to give up. Since then the phone has been fine until today. I got a message for an update and told the phone to proceed. The phone downloaded the data and reboot itself. This is where things get weird; instead of rebooting it takes me to "Team Win Recovery Project v2.3.2.3". I'm assuming I installed some type of boot loader that is preventing the device from installing the factory Verizon update.
Again I'm really a noob at this, and on top of it I really need a stable phone right now. Our family business of 45 years essentially burnt to the ground this past Friday so I'm running around like a mad man. I receive non stop calls and emails from contractors all day and really need to feel like the device is solid again. Help, please....
Sounds like u maybe unlocked? Not sure how far u made it.... first I would install goomanager from the market and open hit menu install recovery... this will update twrp to the latest.... next I would reboot into recovery from goomanager once there backup ur device on sdcard.... then I would try to flash the modded stock update from imnuts....to remain stock...should be fairly safe as from wut I read u only need root which I'm assuming u have if u have twrp...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269736
Also backup ur apps SMS mms contacts pics and whatever u want to keep....
TaPpEd from my TwEaKeD N2
Or just skip the update for now if u don't want to chance it.... if u make a backup u should be ok tho just in case....

It wont update because you have a custom recovery, you should avoid updating to the newest OTA because all our current exploits for bootloader unlocking are useless on it.
Pretty much what happens when you have a custom recovery and you download the update is it tries to install but the custom recovery stops it, it will boot to TWRP which is your custom recovery and then go no further until to tell the phone to reboot into the sytem.

Earlier today i flashed a stock rom, locked my bootloader, and flashed the stock AT&T recovery in an attempt to recieve the 4.2.2 update. As i was checking for the update, a 13.8 mb update was downloaded, however when it tried to install, a red exclamation point came up. So i restarted and tried it again and no luck. So then i decided to run the RUU and start fresh and try again. However this time, the update is not being recieved. Any ideas or hints that you guys have?

Try to uncheck the automatic time in settings and put the tine 24 hour ahead. And try to get the update. Some claim it works this way.

Same for me
Having exactly the same problem. Made an account because i could not find an answer anywhere else. Just tried the time strategy and it did not work.
I do have the downloaded update file. Is there a way to install it through ADB and pushing, as can be done with nexus devices?
Thanks
So it has been a VERY, VERY, long time since I attempted to root a device. I admit, that I completely forgot most of what I knew from back in the day rooting like the Motorola OG Droid. Here's the deal. I tried rooting a USC XT1526 and I had no idea what I was doing. I followed the steps through and managed to install TWRP and SU. So I assume I got full root. Well The issue started after I got an UPDATE AVAILABLE message and tried to go through with the OTA Update. When it got to the point of installing the OTA Update, my device turned off like normal but instead of updating, it booted into TWRP recovery. It didn't update at all and when I booted my phone normally, it kept trying to update so my phone turn off (loop) every time it tried to install the update. I did a factory reset and it stopped rebooting. I later tried to flash back to fully stock but I believe I might have downloaded the wrong file because I now have a device with no WiFi. Can someone please help me.
