Surprised this wasn't asked yet as Google made it very clear 4.4 is made for lower memory devices.
As I'm running 4.3 on my Galaxy Nexus I'm faced with updating myself to 4.4 once it's stable and fully functional thanks to all the great developers out there. However, I'm wondering if I should based on the memory usage. 4.3 started making my phone lag a bit and have slower UI between app switching and such. Similar issues to:
4.3 high RAM usage?
So, does anyone know how much memory 4.3 uses in comparison to 4.4? It would be interesting to see how Google has based it's claim to a 512MB memory phone being sufficient while 4.3 may not be?

I'm testing CM11 right now, and it runs lot faster than CM10.2 on my SGS with only 512MB ram! It looks like there is always more free ram also, but I can't say for sure, will have to wait for a stable version to come out and make better comparison.

Yep, this is still a problem.
I just noticed my that Sony may have been right in directing me to check available RAM on ICS. I have a tiny amount of RAM available and had to delete many apps, still the phone doesn't run smoothly.
Anyone here still on Gingerbread? What's your available RAM like? Roughly, how many apps do you have installed? I may switch back, I've had enough.
I can see why this happened:

We do not have the same phones so i do not know if the following is relevant or even possible for you. I recently flashed the ics333 rom with a semaphore kernel on my Galaxy SI and it really flies. If i have understood correctly the semaphore kernel frees up extra ram. I now have on average 140-170Mb available instead of 30-60Mb It makes such a difference. even games like Temple Run which i could not play before work without lag.
You should maybe consider flashing an optimised rom, if available.

A better kernel, or simply a custom ROM, I appreciate your help! :victory:
I came back from my first trip to Paris and my camera app kept freezing, it drove me crazy. I'll definitely look into the kernels.

I just switched back to GB stock ROM (184 kernel) after having tried ICS stock and xICS Hybrid ROM. In both the ICS based ROMs , I found that the battery usage is quite high (both normal usage and standby) . Also the phone started freezing after a certain number of apps were launched. I face no such issues in GB Stock ROM and it is quite fast too. Also Sony has done a good work wid UI esp. Gesture based typing and word predicition(which is quite accurate)
I have around 12-15 apps installed and I use most of them regularly yet I always have around 90-120 MB of free RAM and I have never run into issues with free RAM as such.
Also, while using ICS receiving a call used to be laggy esp when you are in middle of something and u get a call but GB is quite good in that respect. So I can safely suggest GB is well suited for Sola . Go for ICS only if you need a feature specific to it or if you are too crazy about new UI. Hope this helps a bit

I couldn't remember much about RAM usage on GingerB but I knew that I didn't have that freezing problem with apps or with phone calls etc. On ICS, I checked my RAM and it was constantly around 20MB, I never imagined I'd be the person that installed too many apps for the RAM to handle. I think Sony made some poor decisions re: RAM and OS upgrade.
Thankfully we can backup our ROMS so easily so I think I'll go back to Gingerbread.

Juts to add to my last post, After switching back to GB I found that the battery usage (on standby ) overnight dropped to 3% from 30-40% in case of ICS based ROMs
Hey hey =)
Recently got me a nice wee vibrant. Had Froyo 2.2 on it for a while and it was great buuut (no fun without haxx)
Anyway, I love this game called Major Mayhem, it ran brilliantly smooth and flawless when the phone has 2.2 on it.
Now, please see the video here > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_AMretUdck
I am receiving frequent and infrequently fps drops and stutters when playing this game now. If someone could also install this game and try it out on their phone, preferably running the nightly build cm-10.1-20130110-NIGHTLY-vibrantmtd
http://code.google.com/p/vibrant-cm/issues/detail?id=25
Can anyone suggest some tweaks and or give me feedback about how it runs on their phones?>
I suspect the issue is due to the low amount of available ram. Because of project butter in jb, the OS requires more ram vs previous versions leaving less available ram to the user. It makes general functions smoother but gaming seems to suffer on the vibe.

Yea this could be true - I think 512mb was available for use in 2.2 but now it's 384mb.
Perhaps a few changes can be made to a nightly so we can test?
Greetings my dear friends.
I'm here to give my verdict on the upgrade to ICS after 2 months using the ICS Stock ROM I could finish something. Read and understand.
I have an XPERIA U ST25a retail brazilian.
Sure, the stock ICS ROM is very attractive, all good new stuff found in Android 4.0 are very good, like the new UI or settings menu, the toggles easily accessible are very useful, but the apparent instability and slowness (in moments) make me think why I bought this phone, and also think about going back to the old but great stock GB ROM.
And yes, i use ICS ROM, I made my own modifications and tweaks to the all-bloated ICS Stock ROM get the maximum performance.
But the bugs are really ridiculous.
The battery only charges sometimes if the phone is restarted, otherwise the indicator will be locked at 39%, for example.
The camera seems to be slow compared to the old Stock GingerBread ROM.
The open / close applications is not slow, but sometimes the application takes to respond as if something sucking the system performance.
All these bugs may (or may not) be Sony's problem, but since the era of my old devices I have these SAME problems in some ICS ROMs (I've also tested the FXP CM9 rom, and believe me, if you fill up with apps, will be slow too).
It seems that Android 4.0 ICS is always buggy and slow, and then Eclair 2.1 (horrible) then followed by the 2.2 Froyo (good).
My conclusion: Don't upgrade if you hate a phone will be a little bit slower.
I just do not go back to stock GB ROM why I still enjoy a good user interface instead of performance.
But if you do not like one bit of minimal slowdowns or some bugs, DO NOT bother upgrading to ICS. Just a beautiful day, we have the long awaited Jelly Bean. Even if it is a CM10, the "Butter Project" realizes disappear with lags. And all these little problems may be fixed.
I just let my experience here on this upgrade does not seem that there be a good idea.
Thank you very much
What ics firmware build number are you talking about?

About any ICS firmware. I've tested B.1.10, B.1.54 and C.1.10 and of these three have similar and different problems. Its a problem about android 4.0 that have been build focused on research data...
Ics is a very ram hungry ...if u have a device which has ram 512 or below that, them trust me it's best to stay at GB.. In my Xperia P ICS eats up 500MB of my ram.i am just left with 430 MB of usable memory...

But in android free ram doesn't mean more performance, lag will only appear when RAM reaches the "lag level" (30~25 free ram)
Here on my XPU i have 120~140MB free and i don't have any lag. BTW if you install a bunch of crappy apps and let the bloatware of Sony installed you will certainly will get some lag. Even on a XPP with 1GB of RAM you can feel some lags, i've already tested yet!
Yes if you say it like that.. Then yes under a microscope ICS does lag a bit.it's inevitable even the quad cores lag in ics from time to time.. But hey that's why there is JB for the rescue...

I think lag by alot of app is open. So I endtast and free ram. It Work fine with me.
I prefer the GB which is less power hungry on RAM compared to ICS.
ICS, I find it laggy.
Most games lag on ICS compared to GB.
For me, if I'll choose, I'll go for Custom ROM based on ICS(not the stock one that sony distributed). If you don't like stock ROM then I'll stick to GB because ICS consumes more RAM than GB.
I've read a few threads here concerning multitasking problems on the Galaxy S3. From what I gather, the reason multitasking sucks and apps constantly reload when reopened is due to bloatware running in the background using precious memory.
I have a Nexus 7 as well and multitasking on this thing is a dream. Hardly anything is ever reloaded. I've seen a few different suggested solutions but nothing 100% solid.
My S3 is stock (unrooted) and running JB 4.1.1. For some reason, my phone won't find the 4.1.2 update but that's another story in itself.
I'm just asking for people who have experienced this problem, apps constantly redrawing, what you all have done to fix this. What roms you've flashed, mods you've flashed or made etc. Maybe this can be made into a thread to help a lot of S3 users, a guide somewhat. This is my 2nd S3, I flashed a few ICS roms on the 1st one and it never made much of a difference in terms of memory management, but I don't know if the same could be said for JellyBean.
Any tips and advice much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Most custom roms seem ok for multitasking. Just don't flash any aggressive memory management mods coz they're gonna kill your app as soon as you open another.. "stock" custom roms do the trick for me unless I'm running a heavy game or something.

Most S3 custom ROMs has bloatware removed already, but you could either delete the APK file in the ROM file or use ROMCleaner

I've been flashing roms like crazy and none of them are as smooth as my Nexus 7 or my friend's Nexus 4..I've tried all the best AOSP roms and stock based roms and I can't be satisfied till it can be as smooth as a Nexus 4..its solely the ram management that's slowing everything down :'(

I have never ever had a problem with multitasking. Is that probably only because I have the 2GB version of the Galaxy S3?

I have the sane problem and flashed omega rom 4.1.2 and same problem reloads my app
high usageof ram is da problem
2gb version doesnt have this problem . only 1gb version di this
I understand what you're saying. Like you, i've searched and tested a lot to solve multitasking on stock roms (zram, swap in the internal sd, swap on external sd, tweaks like apps in ram increase, etc.) Far from satisfying. You can get jkay mod to lock your launcher in memory, that helps with the launcher redraws but one can't just lock everything in ram. zram had weird behaviours with extended use, swap works but makes all stuff generally slower, especially if used from the external sd and also has the sd wear potential problem.
I've came to terms with the reality that multitasking is essentially broken and since every other samsung phone on this range is getting 2Gb i gave up on samsung bothering to actually make this work properly. I don't even think newer phones have that fixed either, it's just there's probably enough ram not to care.
I was just about to put it up for sale so i tried aosp roms. Dude, this is where it's at, it's not that it's perfect but multitasking probably doesn't get any better than this for this phone. Tried slimrom and, granted, you do some "sacrifices" but multitask WORKS. I mean, stuff doesn't get closed after a while because for no reason - on stock, apps on background actually apeared to have a timer, they'd get closed even if i didn't do anything with the phone after a while (there's a limit of course). Also, i didn't compromise that much. Browser is actually better than stock's - does the same but it's faster and reflows text on zoom. Camera isn't THAT bad. You do lose all the effects from the stock camera but i never used them anyway and i can always get some other camera app for that, there's plenty anyway. I've seen people complaining about bluetooth but i use mine a lot and haven't come across any problem. Some say they have worse battery or microlags - to me battery's about the same as stock and had microlags anyway with stock, even worse since apps were restarting way more often.
TL: DR - try out an aosp rom. Made me reconsider selling my phone. For now.
I have android phone with 1GHz processor and 256 MB total RAM, running custom ROM based on android 2.3.5.
I have found Android never been stable as iOS.
I want to handover my phone to my parent where they will not be using any specific android smart features. In fact, it will be used only as feature phone not smart phone.
I want to strip off all the app from android OS without affecting basing network functionality. Then I can install only specific apps. I think, this way I'll have better stable android device.
Can someone advise or provide link/info which apps can be safely removed from android 2.3.5 OS leaving behind so called "minimal android"?
Comparing Apple(s) to oranges, my friend. A 1 Ghz single core processor with 256 RAM and an outdated and not quite optimized version of Gingerbread with most likely poor Chinese coding of the software is not going to make for the most enjoyable experience. This has much less to do with Android than it does in the weak hardware and not as polished software from the manufacturer. But without knowing what kind of phone you have, we'd have no clue as to what you should or shouldn't freeze or uninstall.

Thanks for your reply.
I agree, I have week hardware...which is weakest point.
I have micromax A57 which is an Indian brand may be Chinese base/hardware.
I am already running custom ROM and not stock ROM. At present, I am happy with it's performance after shifting to custom ROM (xzotica v2).
But before handing over it to someone, who is not quite aware of Android and techi....rather leaving it with lots of popups/unwanted FCs/slow performance, I am thinking to strip off it to best possible leaving only core android behind. Then I'll only add app really required.
I am just looking for general guideline if any....for android 2.3.5 minimum base files/apps....

I really appreciate your efforts.
I have checked this ROM earlier. It's good but some error, thats why it has not good user base also.
And, this is not what I'm looking for. I would like to remove all apps without affecting normal booting, not any FC's after removing apps and all radios working.
That's all what I want on my phone. My question regarding what apps can be removed is not ROM specific but android 2.3.5 specific.
Again thanking for your efforts.
