MOD EDIT: Updated statement, not entirely true and currently under review. Hang tight, everything will be explained soon.
Remember the little discussion we had going in a thread here regarding vRoot, and i joked about vRoot was mining IMEIs? Well, apparently it's true . We have only ourselves to blame. I'm already rooted so i'll unlock my bootloader and install recovery. That way i don't need to root again if i screw something up. You "should" do the same if you're already rooted and don't care about losing Gracenote and X-Reality. Remember to backup your TA folder.
This application is currently under review, XDA is in contact, and working with Kingo to resolve security issues, however until certain guidelines are met links will not be allowed in xda.
Thank you.

What does this mean? What are they able to do with our IMEI's (if they have them)? I'm not sure, and i won't speculate.
UPDATE: We'll have to wait this one out and see what happens. In the meantime, do not use Kingo or vRoot.
UPDATE - 19 november:
FB post from Kingo:
"In this 1.1.2 version, the IMEI is no longer a problem. It's a long way to release the open source 2.X version, we have to face many tech problems and facing the Android 4.3,4.4 update at the same time. Thank you for your understanding."

If this is true, then it's safe to use Kingo again. We don't know if this is indeed true, but i don't see why they should lie about it since we can easily check it ourselves. Nothing from the devs behind vRoot though, so keep staying away from it for now.
Thanks to @stopa10 for keeping us updated
UPDATE - 8 december:
A new rooting tool has been released. Download it from this thread, and follow this guide (just swap vRoot with the new tool).
Thanks to cubeundcube (dev) and @RyokoN

And yeah, i have PMed a mod and asked if this can be stickied so people don't use them.

But vRoot does certainly grant root access.
Yeah we all had reservations about vRoot tool. But rooting was just to important to deny its easiness.
Will be interesting to see what the outcome is. What will happen from now...

So does Kingo, but the thing here is that we don't know why they are pulling IMEIs and what not. You can use it, but you won't know what's actually happening in the background (while it's rooting). But read the OP. The people that are checking into this will update us when they have more on this. In the meantime, don't root unless you really really need to.

I PM'd Chainfire about vRoot back in september. He was skeptical, and wouldn't use it himself, and that was pretty much it. I don't know if he's part of the investigation now though.
We'll have to wait until the mods have investigated this further, but what we already know is that they're logging our IMEIs. If that's intentional or not is a different question and I guess that's why the mods are investigating it. All vRoot and Kingo links have been removed from XDA, but if you want to use them then be my guest. I'm not stopping anybody, I'm just warning you

Yup, it looks like our IMEIs are on a remote server some place (most likely in China). But we don't know what, if or what they can do with it. The mods are - as mentioned on the case, so we'll see what they find.
Also, Kingo posted this on their FB page today. If this is true, then it's not as bad as expected, but i hope it's the same story with vRoot (that they aren't mining data), since that's what we've used the most around here.

i like their statement, it somehow rings of the truth being spoken, that it's a bunch of devs who want wide recognition (for the right things), and clarifying it like how they're doing is a good start to getting this resolved.

Of course it could.
But I don't see how that could be useful to Chinese people, since a stolen phone with blocked IMEI can be used freely in another country.
For example, if I steal a phone here in Italy, and it gets IMEI blocked, I can sell it in the UK because it will definitely work there.
I also used vRoot like everyone else, it was simple, quick, and most of us needed it for restoring our old apps or for tinkering with DPI or something else.
I don't regret it, and I'm still skeptical about it being such a malware app. The only app I saw was MtkCamera, and I've just seen it on the first version of vRoot, not the last one.
Furthermore, I did a full scan with McAfee (and uninstalled the minute after) and it didn't find anything.
That doesn't mean the whole process it's secure (because it pushes data into the phone and erases it after it's done), but it's a start.
Just my 2 cents obviously, not backed up by any concrete proof.
Sent from my C6833 using Tapatalk 2
Interesting.. I just don't understand how IMIE could be useful for them if it now was intentional to save it.
It's not like they can block the IMIE from another country is it :s? And even if they block/clone it or whatever, does this even make a difference being another country and all?
How important is IMIE? I know it's like your personal number and you use it to block the phone within the country. For example, I know people sell phones that they got from a contract, the carrier then blocks the IMIE and sends them a new phone making the scammer get away with money and a new phone.
But still, from another country?

OK, back! After reviewing your XDA activity, I cannot be certain you even own a Razr. All I have seen in your postings is a continual bashing of Motorola. In fact, from the steady stream of vitriolic content you've issued, one might conclude that you, sir, are the troll and have an agenda in play... and it's likely not simply wanting an update. Especially when said update is readily available to flash onto the phone you claim to own.
I also find it odd that your signature never says "sent from my Razr".

I do have posts when my razr mentioned in the end, I just usually use my tablet to surf on xda app.
No, I'm not a troll... I do feel a pain about Motorola's behavior, and that's why I'm so negative..
I love android cause its high level os with a lot of options and etc, and iphone not..
And I love my razr, and that's why I want to install -official- update on it, so it would have more options, supported apps and etc.
If you don't believe me that I have a razr, send me a pm and I would take a picture of my razr.
I had amount of some troll massages cause I lost my mind, like" omggg ios is out ", but I did try to make it look like a joke.
Usally when I complaining, I also insert a little joke on motorola, so it would not be such a threat.
And I'm playing here as a rebel who hates motorola after her many promises and disappointing, if I were hate my own device, I were always say" I would sell my phone if I won't get the update. ", so no, it isn't true, and I would not sell it even if motorola doesn't want to update us.
I'm enjoying my device, and I want to improve my phones abilities by upgrading into a new Android os, so I could enjoy my razr even more.
And I don't need a windows 8 phone/tablet, cause correctly I have it on my pc, the costumer preview, and I would not like to have a windows 8 on my tablet or phone.
I hope you readed it all, and won't call me a troll or someone who dislikes his own device... That's time, I even didn't rage just for you.

Fair enough. But just remember- ICS development is a very involved process and clearly the final development stages found some issue with the Euro release. I'm sure they're working hard to fix it rather than release something this major with a known problem.

can anybody erase this tread or at least close it, i dont think it fits on xdadevelopers i just loose my time to read something like that
I'm with the OP.
As an owner of a GSM RAZR for the last 6 months, I love the hardware, but the support from Moto is hopeless.
As an ex-Milestone owner I guess I should have known what I was letting myself in for, but I was suckered into the talk of ICS coming soon, way back in December 2011.
Sure, I could mess around and use a "leaked" ROM, but at the first sniff of a defect that requires warranty work, I'd be screwed by Motorola UK. They said Q2 2012, and that was a long enough wait, but they failed to deliver.
I'll keep my RAZR until my 12 month contract is up, then move on to something from another manufacturer - most likely Samsung. Motorola just aren't interested in the world outside the USA, and the very least the rest of the world can do is return the disinterest and stop buying their products.
So.. I started seeing concerns pop up about Kingo installing Chinese backdoors into phones and PCs..
Has anyone else heard this? can this be confirmed?
I feel I should wait and see where this goes.
Would love to hear what you all think...
I have the same feeling.. I've finialy got around to the site... and it looks legit. ...even the most popular root tool was retired because of (supposed effortless application of the root tool)the dev saying the kingo was easier.
but i wonder too what is the fine print if any.. let's start the conversation.... Although this might be the wrong section.
It is the wrong section. Belongs in Q&A

I too am curious about the "about face".
Be aware that as of this moment XDA has deemed the Kingo root method and Vroot method are not allowed on XDA. There are concerns with the information which is collected during the root method by the exploit. It is not about a continuous malware which may affect your device but about important information shared about your device, serial numbers etc during the root process which could be huge securities issues.
You have all been warned
Have a great day!

I've moved this to Q and A since it is actually a question and not original development obviously... XDA is not doing a reversal at all... the said systems had yet to have a verified developer/s look at them. Now there has been. It seems that this is a VERY unsecure method of root and can open up your pc and phone to well, nasty stuff... the root files come from china... but for those of you who want to play with fire... be my guest...
This is just me thinking out loud...
Personally, I think I would be more worried about the NSA gaining access to our phones. J/K
In all seriousness, I am curious if there is any real evidence that points to anything underhanded happening when using the Kingoapp method or is this just stating that the possibility exists and it is unknown? And, if the makers of Kingoapp wanted to assure us that nothing hinky is going on, what would they have to do to prove it to the XDA community?
I think these are fair questions as human nature in general tends to turn supposition into fact in the blink of an eye so it would nice to know the real facts before anyone starts casting dispersions on them just because the root files are from China.
I do understand the precaution of removing any Kingoapp links in XDA in the meantime. :good:

Kingoapp posted a response to all of the accusations made about their app on their facebook page.
So it seems that what everyone is all worked up about is that part of the information that it gathers from your phone to identify it so that the proper scripts can be downloaded is the IMEI # on the phone. The folks at Kingoapp agree that, that tidbit of information isn't necessary in the identification process and their next version will remove that "requirement." They also explain that they do use "free" servers to store some of their scrips to cut down on the traffic on their servers and the related data download costs. They will also release a version down the road that will include all of the scripts when the app is downloaded to your PC so that during the rooting process, there is no need for the app to communicate with other servers.
As I suspected, people have gone off half-cocked claiming malware is installed on the phone/PC, etc. Someone even posted that XDA said that Kingoapp installed malware (which XDA did not say!) on Kingoapps facebook page.
I wish people would realize that baseless accusations and rumors hurt the cause and could cause companies like Kingoapp, that are providing a free way to root your phone without tripping Knox in one step, to stop development and remove their work from the market.

root worked for me from Kingo...easier on MJ4...no problems

Great news, and agreed. I've been waiting for things to calm down. I want Kingoapp and root. Seems the best for the time. Not ready to root, yet, but I will and I hope Kingoapp has the update by then.
I wonder how many people have downloaded, without a second thought, root apps, or themes.....and even non root. Guess where a LOT of those are written? Just sayin.
I've been thinking of using vroot and have read many have already used it with no problem but is it safe ? Is xda going to release this exploit safely without the possible backdoor to china?

Not sure. I believe some of the devs are trying to pick it apart and figure out what it is communicating. Some feel it is safe, others do not. I'm not sure what xda review process is for stuff like this, but they have some pretty talented folks on staff if they have banned the links I would trust their judgement for now until proven otherwise.

yea I have and some say its safe but other say its the devil but its confirmed working thats for sure. I want root but infecting my pc and phone to get it is hardly worth it. I figured it was fair question to ask to see what others thought outside the thread after all this is Q&A:laugh:
from what i have read, no one has found anything malicious or dangerous, just a lot of things that are suspect.
personally, i would just wait until the devs find another root method just to be sure. it isn't worth it imo...
Since vRoot is apparently used to root 3500 different devices (are there really that many?) I would assume that the IMEI is used to identify the device being rooted so rooting can be carried out properly. This is completely my guess since I don't know anything about any of it.
I just used it and rooted. It was a pain in the butt but successful. It's a very simple process also.

Proper grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, and intelligent, this is obviously not a punk trying to rob us of anything. After reading their explanation, I'd be much more comfortable using their product.
Good read. I was most leery about it reading IMEI, and will use their software in their next release that removes it.
One thing that has been pondering my mind. That Kingo unlock tool they have been taking abbot. It seems promising but what are the chances?

E.S.L.
The more I read from Kingo and the more I look into this issue, the more I think that they are not doing anything shady.
Their app. is advertised for rooting, unlocking, etc., TONS of different devices. Some devices I know need to have certain codes created from that specific device's information (like the IMEI and SN or whatever) in order to achieve some of these unlocks, etc...
I have a hunch they just collect that info. from all the connected devices in case they need it on their servers to generate one of these specific codes/scripts they need.
*shrug*

I think an important thing to consider is that word spreads through the development community pretty quickly and if they were caught red handed helping themselves to private data they risk a major backlash, most android enthusiasts take their phones more seriously than politics or religion. The letter seems legit and they are removing the questionable information gathered. To offend this community is a legitimate way to lose 60+ percent of the people who would use your services, free, ad supported or otherwise. There is only one company/entity who had constantly screwed with development and the xda crew and that's Verizon Wireless. Kingo is not Verizon Wireless.

Many people have used Kingo with no issues as of yet. The whole root process is a risk, but the benefits are well worth it.

How did this work for you?
They've updated the rooting software
Can anyone confirm that this method is now a more XDA approved method? As in it no longer pulls personal data from the device other than things that are necessary such as phone model and such.

The official recommendation is to wait for version 2.0, as it will have this server information sending "feature" removed. That is based on Kingo's response. To say that Kingo devs had bad intentions for us is not accurate, but the sending of certain information to foreign servers when it really shouldn't be necessary is always understandably a red flag.
Will it hurt you to use Kingo root on your Note 3 now? Probably not. Is it safer for you to just wait for version 2.0? Probably.
Hope that helps.
They've updated to v1.1.2 it seems ( Mod Edit: links to vRoot or Kingo are currently not allowed on XDA.
) which is why I asked. Looks like they supposedly fixed the questioned issue...but I am in no way able to confirm that.

Yes, this method totally works:
Step 1: Ask Kingo if Kingo is up to no good.
Step 2: Receive response from Kingo that says no, we are totally not up to no good
Step 3: Wait, was that a triple or quadruple negative?
Step 4: ...
Step 5: Profit
I think all this hoopla over kingo is funny. People...your personal info and data is accessible on a STOCK smart phone. If you want to remain anonymous...dont use a smart phone period. Ship it to me and buy a trakfone.
have a nice day.
I figured the information being sent was pertaining to pushing the correct files, when you mass root many devices it only makes sense. Still it makes sense to be caution especially when you don't know exactly what info is being sent.

It is safe. I made a nandroid backup so once I'm done rerooting I can go right back to my current setup, I was just being cranky. It's no big deal I'll do everything and post the screen shots, hell if anything I like screwing around with this phone. But yeah it's safe, and like I said, I'll have those screen shots for you in about ten minutes or so if you want. I understand wanting to be safe, especially with the gf's phone, been in that situation before myself

Yeah I was thinking about doing a how-to-root thread for all skill levels for a while now, it's a question that seems to get asked daily and there's no real centralized place for people to find that info. Almost done setting everything up, I'll have those pics soon and probably write everything up in detailed step by step in a new thread

Yes, check the s5 unified development section, the SM-G900T can use any Cyanogenmod-based ROM made for klte (including Bliss)
Here is the thread for Bliss, remember, download the one for klte:

thank you for this I found it interesting to read. the only thing that I do not like about this is , it trips KNOX Counter. that is not good from what I understand. maybe there is a way with this root to kill KNOX altogether or remove KNOX. also a side question. is the bootloader locked in the T-Mopbile S5?

The bootloader is unlocked, and Knox is just a counter, telling you when you boot up that you're rooted. It can be reset along with a full unroot

There is no known way of resetting the Knox counter. It is like an efuse. However, tripping it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

it is funny you mention that. I have also seen those posts. and honestly it took me a few month of just reading and chatting with these folks on XDA to trust them, these people know or somewhat know what they are doing. if they make a mistake they do correct them in a day or two or right then and there if they notice it. some of these people on XDA are a bit cranky and some or not nice at all but most are real good people.
