1.Before update simply open superuser settings 2.scroll down to the bottom enable Pro 3.check survival mode 4.uncheck Enable superuser 5.install ota update
6.after reboot enable superuser 7.disable survival mode 8.enjoy
I have been informed that this may not work for some if that's the case for you please refer to post #4. Most do not have to purchase superuser pro for this to work but it seems that others do. Also if you have modified your rom e.g deleted system apps or Verizon crap this method will fail unless you restore them . sorry for not thanking whomever the original person was to come up with this method I came up with it in part on my own but was informed by another on a step I had missed so if you are the originator I thank you and give you a big high five. If you need apps that you deleted thank grompy

doesn't work for lots of people. Myself included. here's what I finally did to keep root with the original Root de LA Vega.
1. Odin back to original stock MI9
2. Odin to Root de la Vega (full instructions in that thread)
3 . installed xposed, wanam, security hack boot screen to remove "custom"
4. rebooted 2X, enabled supersu pro, checked the survival mode, unroofed
5. took the OTA, re-enabled supersu.
This was after trying in vain lots of other ways, to avoid kingo. previously it always stopped updating at 1/3 complete.

no, you can't ODIN back from MJ7.. I was still on the root de la vega MI9. I should have said that.

Rooted by root de la vega. No idea why apnhlos is modified.
Thinking about making a tar.md5 with just the original NON-HLOS.bin from the official MI9 image. Does anyone know if it would trip knox?

How did you unroot?..... just disable Super SU?
I had tried the method in OP, and it failed first because of a stock live wallpaper that I uninstalled with TB. Once I replaced those files, the second failure was due to my build.prop being edited. After replacing that with stock, the OTA soft bricked my phone. At that point I did exactly the same method described in post 4, and it worked no problem. Then just restored a backup from TB and had to fix some settings and stuff.
So OP method will probably fail if you've uninstalled system stuff with TB (frozen stuff doesn't seem to be an issue), or made changes to the build.prop.

I just got an update for Superuser from Google Play, v3.1(42), released today. In the changelog, Temp Unroot and OTA survival options have been added. I think this might be useful for those of us who are rooted when getting the OTA update. I plan on trying it out.
I don't have a third party "root keeper" type application installed, is there any possibility that this is just as good?

Yeah, Superuser has to compete with SuperSu, that's why those new features are in there, SuperSu has them. And yes, OTA survival works better than Voodo Roor Keeper.

The OTA survival on SuperSu and Superuser are slightly better than Voodo, as they automate some processes of regaining root, but it's the same concept.

I can't speak to other devices, but for my Transformer Infinity and Droid 4, Superuser's OTA Survival did nothing for me, and Voodoo worked perfectly.
if you have superuser in the system\app directory then you cant use the unroot as it needs to be in the \data\app directory for it to work. I tried it with both sueruser and supersu and each would only unroot if the superuser app was in the \data\app directory... i would move it their then reboot and do that... or just use the droid razr utility which will make it all stock.... best way really.
Actually, after searching around more, I think my problem may have been that the means of using the ota survival in superuser is spectacularly un-obvious and un-intuitive and nearly un-documented. I just tested using Voodo's temp unroot and then superuser to restore root and that worked.
For anyone else that finds Superuser's method confusing:
1) Before any update that might un-root your device, check the "ota survival" box in superuser
2) After an update that un-roots your device, open superuser and *uncheck* the "ota survival" box. This will restore your root and, for reasons that flabbergast me, REMOVE the backup, so ...
3) After restoring root, re-check the "ota survival" box
Compare this to Voodoo:
1) Create backup of su when rooted
2) When un-rooted, click "Restore Root"
Repeat just #2 when you get the next OTA
rooting after temp unroot
How do you root again after a temp unroot? unchecking the temp unroot doesnt work.. it does something, but afterwards the temp unroot is still checked. Also a phone restart doesnt help. Anyone else have this issue? (I'm on motorola defy+ with quarx jelly bean cyanogenmod)
temp unroot
No one can explain how to regain root over a SU temp unrooted phone?

Im not sure if there is root for .136, but what i did was root it at 370 and then update ota which kept my root. You can always downgrade back to 370 with flashtool and then upgrade ota if root is that important to you
Okay, I'll check it out this noon. Thanks for your answer.

As jetstream said, you have to be rooted before taking the OTA and have SuperSU installed as a system app with survival mode enabled. You can then take the OTA and keep root. I just did it myself. I found this info in the root threads in the development section off you want more info.
There is currently no way to root 4.2.2.

There is an option to enable pro features without spending the $, but it is certainly recommended to support the devs (I paid the $2.49; worth it to keep root). That said, it is possible that the survival mode is unnecessary. I don't know about that though. It would be up to you if you wanted to try without survival mode.
Also, as far as I saw from reading through the root threads; this will ONLY work if you update via the OTA on the tablet. If you try to flash the update via some other method you will probably lose root.

Yes, Survival Mode is only available in SuperSU Pro. I could be mistaken but unlike Install SuperSU into /system being a requirement, I do not believe Survival Mode is truly a requirement for retaining root access when updating from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. Hopefully someone that has successfully updated and retained root access using the free version of SuperSU will come by and confirm my belief. Either way, you should purchase SuperSU Pro, if for no other reason than to support the developer. It's only $2.49 USD.

I'll definitely purchase SuperSU Pro. I have paid so much more for apps that I barely use since I'm an app freak. The OTA is still not available for me but as soon as it is I'll try to update via OTA without Survival Mode and see if it works. If it doesn't, I'll try again with Survival enabled on the free version and if it doesn't work, I'll try again with the Pro version. I'll post my findings here unless someone beats me to it....

Which FTF did you flash? And did you use Flashtool, Emma, etc?
EDIT: Got it done finally. Flashed the US FTF I found on the forums with Flashtool (also relocked bootloader), rooted, installed SuperSU as system app, downloaded and installed update with success. Thanks for the tip on Flashtool, I had forgotten about that program. While it is true that Survival mode is not required if SuperSU is set as a system app, it is also true that once Survival mode is enabled, setting SuperSU as a system app is not required to preserve root. In other words, Survival mode is all that is needed to keep root alive with an OTA update to 4.2.2. Tried, tested, proven

(UPDATE) 10/30/13--WORKING MJ4
SUCCESS ROOT ON MJ4 KNOX 0x0!
IF YOUR ALREADY ON MJ4 and want to keep knox 0x0 read bootloader warning and look at end of this post. (optionally take the mj4 ota and do one of the methods below.)
WARNING!!!!! THE MJ4 UPDATE MAY CONTAIN A NEW BOOTLOADER!!!
LOOK HERE for bootloader warning http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503620
there have been reports of people flipping knox trying to downgrade from mj4.
at the moment there is no full mj4 file. be careful (more info post #142)
i take no responsibility for any of this
Currently the best method for doing this
Get the full official mi5 file from --http://hotfile.com/dl/251958168/19cbccf/SPR-N900PVPUBMI5-20131004144419.zip.html
this will serve as the basis for rooting straight to mi5.
next go HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498850
read that page twice. read it again.
i used those files on a copy of the mi5 software to create a modified vega ready version
from there its pretty much the same
Just to be safe pull your sd card first.
FLASH THE STOCK MI5 FIRST (not needed)
1. Flash the modified vega full mi5 file you created earlier.
2. do the part with the root files on the sd card.(IT MAY BE BEST TO SKIP THIS PART UNTIL AFTER THE OTA skipping steps 2-4 should let you update, then run the sd files to gain root after update then you should be able to set status official with wanam and you should be all ready to accept the next ota.just skip 2 all together and move steps 3-4 to the end)(thanks @bard77)
3.install the wanam xposed framework and wanam xposed (the apk is in the market along with a link to the framework get both) make sure to open the framework and click update/install. (This is done in the xposed installer app not the wanam app.)
4. Spoof system status to official using wanam
5.accept the ota update and reboot
6. Copy the vega root files back to the sd
7.reboot
8.remove the vega root files again
9.reboot
10. Check root. i used root checker free from market
11. check knox status (reboot download mode again)
12. head back over to the vega thread and throw a thanks and maybe buy designgears a drink!
if using supersu pro keep ota root method. you must run the sd files before accepting ota (must have root first) then you wouldnt need to run them again. but because you have to run them once at some point anyway probably better at this point to go ahead and skip the sd files until after ota and reboot.
I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SET SYSTEM STATUS BACK TO OFFICIAL WITH WANAM YET>this is no big deal.will just have to wait for the next update anyway. (Check updated method above in red. doing it that way should let you spoof status again.)
I did not have to wipe data.
a downgrade will not flip the flag.(ON MJ4 A DOWNGRADE MAY FLIP KNOX!!)
vega knox safe root works.
spoofing system status works
flashing the official sammy again gives you a stock phone with knox still 0x0 and status official.(there is no mj4 full restore be careful!)
system status custom but no biggie there.
Spoofing system status to official with xposed and taking the ota will remove root.you must use the vega root files again.or supersu pro to keep root.
Flashing any full stock samsung files again will return everything to official.(caution on mj4)
Good enough for me at the moment.
Also remember flashing a custom kernel\recovery at this time will flip knox.
Any zip files you would want to flash will need to be done manually instead. Use adb or a file explorer with root access [I use es file explorer] and copy the files over.
THIS WILL NOT RESET KNOX if it has already been flipped. at the moment it looks like a hardware fuse gets blown. there may be no way to reset knox to 0x0. (however i am constantly surprised at what the talented devs on this forum can pull off)
FLASHING ANY CUSTOM KERNEL/RECOVERY/ROMS will flip the knox flag.
now we can use the native sprint hotspot mod! pretty much my reason for going through this. ( a mj4 odex version http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46980618#post46980618)
you may need to turn on usb debugging mode also.especially for methods below.
you can turn on usb debugging mode here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468680
IF YOUR ALREADY ON MJ4:
the method above will not work for you.
you will not be able to downgrade to run the vega files.
at least until samsung releases a mj4 upgrade.
for now your best option might be an app called kingoroot but beware it may be dangerous from a security pov (http://www.no links please) (thanks @cherylbaker @dallastx for testing for us)
another option may be using vroot tool . (once again you will need to google it do not post links. please.) (thanks @cyphol post #190 with instructions on how to use a few posts later)
Thanks a mil for testing

In theory that gives me root with knox 0x0 and mi5 but no one has tried yet I guess.

im doing this right now.
it has been reported the knox safe boot works on sprint.
i can confirm 100% that a downgrade back to mi3 using the official sammy files will not trip knox.
didnt even wipe my data so far.
will report back shortly with more info and if all is successful a short tut.
can now report for 100% knox safe root has worked.
now to see about xposed and the ota.
xposed let me set status back to official! update downloaded!
Bummer! appears updating looses root. resets status to custom.
however knox still 0x0 and everything works so far.
ill mess around for a bit and see what i can come up with.
So i guess the way to go with this right now would be to just downgrade to mi3.
root with vega.
(optionally install exposed)
and just don't update to mi5.
since mi5 doesn't really effect much at the moment this shouldn't be a problem.
MI5 Enhancements/Fixes
- Voicemail audio restored when connected to Galaxy Gear (I DON'T HAVE A GEAR so no worries for me)
- Restriction to benchmark sites removed (I don't care about benchmarks)
Important Notes
- Software version is MI5
- Refer to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Software Update article in Support for install instructions

im doing this right now.
it has been reported the knox safe boot works on sprint.
i can confirm 100% that a downgrade back to mi3 using the official sammy files will not trip knox.
didnt even wipe my data so far.
will report back shortly with more info and if all is successful a short tut.
can now report for 100% knox safe root has worked.
now to see about xposed and the ota.
xposed let me set status back to official! update downloaded!
Bummer! appears updating looses root. resets status to custom.
however knox still 0x0 and everything works so far.
ill mess around for a bit and see what i can come up with.

See if OTA Root Keeper still works. In fact, SuperSU Pro might also have the root preservation option. Downgrade to MI3, the knox safe root, OTA Root Keeper or SuperSU Pro, set device status to official, take OTA, get root back. See how that goes

your a genius i completely forgot about ota rootkeeper and didnt think about checking su pro! be trying this shortly.
Edit:
OTA rootkeeper does not work on 4.3
reports are supersu pro's rootkeeper doesn't work on 4.3 either but i'll give it a shot anyway.
edit 2:
Supersu pro doesn't appear to keep root either
was worth a shot.
surely this will all be solved at some point.
for now im just happy to have root with no flipped flags.
and the ability to return to stock if needed.

Yea. But if you flash the official mi3 update everything returns to stock official. Then can re root again. Just don't accept the ota.

Held out this long will hold out and see if they do Vega due mi5 and how stable Things look. Lots of people keep losing root. I suspect we are going to need more than what we are doing right now. There seems to be something in the phone deleting super user. .

Yea I just couldn't wait any longer.
Everything seems ok here though.
Have flashed back and for between hacked and stock a handful of times testing things out. Haven't had a single fc. Root appears stable through multiple reboots.knox intact.i guess will see for sure over next couple days. I don't feel like I'm missing anything by skipping the mi5. Other than getting the hot spot working. But I'm sure that's doable also. Will keep updated on progress.

Have you flashed a custom ROM? Or Feeza's stock after going through thus process? We're there any issues?
Thanks again for the tip!

Flashing a custom recovery\kernel will flip the knox flag.so I have not.
If you want custom rooms you'd be better using the cf auto root and TWRP recovery. However that would flip the knox flag.
I mostly see this as a temporary hold over to keep knox intact until everything gets figured out.

Cool...thanks again for the advice! Starting to get that flashohalic itch again...lol...not sure I can hold out until they figure out all of these annoyances.

My S4 is failing to install the 4.3 OTA update. It is stock and was rooted with the de la Vega procedure. The only change I did was to install the AOSP browser and disable some bloat. I would appreciate any advice on how to get the 4.3 OTA update to work.

It won't update because you're rooted. I had the same problem. I Odined back to stock and everything was fine after that. Lost root obviously, but not a big deal to me.
It also needs all that bloat you removed back.
Thanks for the advice. I was hoping that I didn't have to unroot. But, I will Odin back.

I just found out why mine won't update - the Xposed Installer updates /system/bin/app_process to install its hooks, and the installer sees that file as modified and fails. If you've got Xposed installed, start the installer and select the "Uninstall (restore app_process)" option. Then the OTA should apply without error - of course, you've got to have all of the bloat restored first.
I wrote a shell script that checks for the necessary files. Push the attached to your sdcard, open a terminal window and do the following:
$ su
# sh /sdcard/otachecker.txt

or /mnt/extSdCard/otachecker.txt if you put it on the external SD card.
The script will tell you what files are missing and what files are tampered with. If all is good to go, you won't see any output.
Success. Odin back to MI1 and then installed 4.3 OTA. Now waiting for a root exploit for 4.3.

No, I used the no wipe method in the xda s4 android development section, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
Hey all, about a month ago I flashed Hyperdrive. I messed up not clearing cache/things and it left a few odd bugs that i just dealt with.
Since then I've decided to fix it all up and flash a new rom but now my Safestrap is saying i'm not rooted and SU is saying I don't have the binaries. I'd like to just get off this rom and into something fresh and without bugs but first I need to re-root it looks like. Any help on where to go from here?

Binary Manifest Download Fails!?

Hey Josh,
Thought I'd jump im here because the post seemed relevant to the problem I'm having. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, build NC5 with Verizon. I rooted phone with Towel Root and verified with Root Checker and Busy Box. I am using SuperUser Elite and the binary shows as outdated (in red) but when I tap to update it says downloading manifest.... fail. I then hit try again and it says superuser has stopped working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. I also installed Titanium Backup. I've read about downloading a zip and saving to sd card and then flashing rom and/or starting up in recovery mode and I am not familiar with doing any of that. Any help would be appreciated as I've about had it with the root thing. Thanks ahead of time.
