The beast? I got mine but haven't powered it up yet for charging purposes. There is no light indicator that tells you when its done.
Got mine yesterday and I charged via AC and it took about 3 hours to complete. After letting it drain over night after 8 hours of heavy usage, I'm charging via USB and it's taking forever. With it on and after 2 hours, it was only at 15%. Now turned it off and it's been 3 hours and it looks like 75%. BTW, press the power button once and the screen will show the batter gauge.
you should charge it while turned on and for 6 hours or more for 4-5 cycles. Let it go down to 5% for those 4-5 cycles. Do not let it turn off from lack of power.
That is from instructions I received from a third party battery which had these detailed instruction to maximize capacity. I am sure you will get 1000 different ways but that is what I use and have always had good battery life.

While powered off, you can hit the volume button to get a visual on the batter status.

This thing pretty much requires the cable that came with it to charge at full speed. Older MicroUSB cables charge at a much slower rate and are recognized as USB devices when plugged in. It must be because of the higher capacity battery. When you have the right cable plugged in, though, it charges pretty fast.
I'm noticing that even using the wall charger and the USB cable it came with, it's taking about an hour for the Note to charge only 15%. Anyone else noticing this? Is it normal that the first batch of charges takes this long (at that rate it would take 6+ hours to charge from 0-100%)?
My note charges very fast when I use the ac adapter and super slow when I use the us from my computer. About 1.5 hours on the ac and more than 3 hours on my pc's us

Its always a good idea to charge using the AC wall adapter. The USB port on a computer usually supplies ~.5A @ 5v to charge the phone, the included Samsung wall charger supplies double that with 1.0A @ 5v. That is the reason you see such a big difference in your charging times.
(Some computers now supply more than .5A through USB, but .5A is most common)
USB3.0 can supply 5.0v @ 950mA to charge, but the kernel isn't set up to take advantage of this, I'll see if I can change that (it would only affect charging while booted)
Just shy of the AC adapter for those of us with USB3 ports

I was excited reading this because my new laptop has a 3.0 port. However, I then remembered that my power brick for my laptop is kick ass and has a USB port that charges devices at 1A anyways. Haha.

So I got it down to 5% and then I plugged it in at around 8pm and at 11pm it was at 100%. Not bad, not great but seems about right. Now my question is I see a notification that battery is fully charged and to unplug charger but Im going to bed soon and am going to leave it plugged over night. Is this risking the battery in any way?

That would be the only use for my USB3.0 ports so far. Have yet to even need to utilize it.
The charger that comes with the Note can charge the battery in 3hours via ac. I wouldn't suggest to charge via usb, just because it's way too slow. Im using my playbook charger to charge my Note, Galaxy Nexus , and my bb 9900. This charger is 1.8a, it nearly charges 2x faster than the regular 1a that comes with most phones. Same thing for my car charger 2a, i even use my ipad charger to charge my iphone 4s and it's way faster!! Use more powerful chargers... Not more than 2a or your device might melt down!!

That's weird. I was under the impression that GS Note only accepts 1.0A of power. Well at least that's what it saids at the back of the phone. I've got an iPad charger that draws out 2.1A, maybe I should give that a try.
My EVO charges really quick for occasional boosts during the day...

How about a 15 minutes boost? does it give it a few hours of life?
I guess i'm comparing it to the HTC evo where i could plug it in for a few minutes and i get some substantial usage after.
It's a bit slow for me. 3-4 hours for a full charge sounds about right. But moderate use while plugged in to a computer it barely charges, haha...
It would be nice to have a kernel that supports rapid charging. I think Da_g mention something like that
15 minute charge isn't enough unfortunately. Samsung phones always take a while to charge I've had this "problem" with my Infuse 4G, my international Note, and now my AT&T Note. 15 minutes honestly might get you 2-3 percent in terms of battery note nearly enough for a few hours of use.
About 40% in an hour so that would be 2.5 hours for 100%. On USB it charges suuuuper slow.
I would love to see how fun it would be to charge one of those 5000mah extended batteries

Mine fully charges from 0 - 100% in less than 2 hours using the original samsung car dock charger. Tried a few times and always charges this quick.

+1 on the Samsung charger. When I use all of the other micro USB chargers that I have it barely charges it. One night I put it on one of the other chargers at 1 am @ 23% and when I woke up at 6 am it was only at 77%. So I put it on the Samsung charger and it went to 100% by 7 am.

Hmmmmmm.
Last night I charged mine on my old HTC charger cuz I didn't feel like crawling behind the bed to swap them. When I woke up (after 8.5 hours of charging) I was at 99%. I suppose it could have been the stupid battery widget reporting incorrectly but my phone was down 8% in the first hour, with only 2 minutes of screen on time.
Guess tonight I'll swap chargers and see if that makes a difference.
any harm in using the Ipad charger to charge the note. i use it on my Iphone and it really speeds up the time needed to charge.
My note will be here Friday.
There may be two variables at play here - the cable, the charging source. I know with my Advantage the stock charger (with no removable cable) had an additional pin which told the Advantage to charge at a full 1 amp rate vs. the standard 500 ma available from a USB port. I think the stock Note charger is rated for 800 ma, don't have it here to verify.
Using the Note's stock cable I've seen a fairly fast recharge time both from the stock charger and my computer's USB port. Yesterday I drained down to 6%, plugged into my work computer (stock cable) for 2 hours then 1 more hour in my car and I was up to 77% after. Which included some time streaming XM via blutooth. Then plugged into the stock charger at home and was up to 100% after a few hours even though I was tethering via Wifi to 2 computers with heavy surfing.
We would need several tests to see if there is something special about the stock charger, the stock cable, or both. But compared to my Advantage it charges way faster and uses much less energy - excluding the display.

Interesting. I wonder if it's just a good low gauge (thicker, better conducting) cable, because the HTC adapters are rated 1 amp.
People who uses the charger that came with the phone must know that these chargers are really weak... They are only 1Amp... I use my blackberry playbook charger which is 1.8Amp charges the phone almost twice as fast than the regular one... Same thing with my ipad and iphone... I use my ipad charger to charge my iphone 4s and it's way faster! Use more powerful chargers! My note gets charged in 2hours top!

I'm curious to know what is the max amperage that the note can take. I know my old EVO is limited to about 950ma.
Uh...I love my Note, but it charges pretty slowly compared to my Skyrocket. It is also the first phone I have had, that can actually discharge while using it on a car charger. Especially if you are watching video or any screen intensive task.

I have recently been profiling a few USB chargers to figure out which one is the best for rapidly charging my phone. A few threads have pointed to the EP851 charger being something a bit special. I was thinking about it on the drive into work..
The specs say that it charges for 60 minutes talk time in 10 minutes.
The XS has 8.5 hours talktime,
This means the charger can fully charge the phone in 8.5 * 10, 85 minutes
Plugging these values into my Charge Timer app gives an estimated power output of 1235ma, almost identical to the 1211ma of mu cheapo 1500ma charger.
Given this closeness, and the fact that the EP850 is also rated at 1500ma I am conclude that they are the same thing.
So, if you want a fast charger for your XS, and are waiting for the EP851, stop waiting and get a genuine BlackBerry Playbook 2A charger. It is about 10% faster (est 1314ma) and available now.

Is it possible that the S has the "boost" pin with its USB connector and the 51 triggers it?
This is my understanding of it. PIN 1 and 4 provide power, 2 and 3 provide data (and 5 provides USB OTG?)
If pin 2 and 3 are not bridged, the phone will charge at the maximum rate as determined safe by the usb 2.0 spec

Both scenarios are, of course, restricted by the power that the connection can supply. For example, if you plugged the phone into a 1000A charger, I would expect it to only pull about 6? amps
As for "is the Playbook charger is safe?", the Playbook has the same type of battery as the SXS, just a lot bigger. For the Playbook, this charger is considered the slow charger, and a rapid charger that pushes more amps at 12V is available.
Obviously, its your phone so use it how you want. I prefer mine in my pocket instead of tethered to a wall so I am going to use the fastest charger I can.

I dont understand what quick charge does exactly. If i have a charger that puts out 3 amps at 5 volts and the battery is 3000 mAh then it should take about an hour to charge if its completely drained. That the basic rule for 1C charging rate for lithiums right? so does the qualcomm charger deliver higher that 1C rates?
It doesn't actually work that way which would be bad for the battery, they charge faster when the battery is low and slow down as its fuller or reach a certain temperature.
As for Qualcomm quick charge, it works a bit different than the USB standard. I'm still not clear on the whole thing, but this is what I gathered:

Thanks for the info eksasol.. I guess I was just being simplistic. I always think of battery charging in terms of hobby remote control chargers for lipo's. True, the charger (or phone) must have built in circuitry to ramp up the amperage it delivers according to what it considers to be safe/efficient. It would slow down as it came up to it full voltage. Ive never really worried about it much since i just plug it in at night and get through the day without needing a recharge. Years ago in RC you could buy batteries that could handle 2C and above charging rates pretty easily. I would imagine that number has increased. I figured phone batteries would essentially be the same.

I did not actually use the supplied 1A charger, but with a standard 1A charger it takes all night.
My tablet 2A charger is way faster (a few hours maybe), honestly I did not take note of the time.
I will try that.
The charger circuit will take care of it, no matter the available current, because tension is fixed to 5V so resulting current will be what the circuit handles.
Not sure about a quickcharge 2.0 charger, don't have one.
idk why i read that it takes them atleast 4-6 hours to fully charge their battery? ehh in an hour mine goes from 6% to like 67% and then the other 30 mins and its done and full. and im just using the charger and cable that came with the phone.

I'm using mine with samsung fast charger (the one that came with my note5) and it charges from 70%-100% in 19mins...according to GSam app

At that rate (30% in 20 min), it should take around 60 min to reach 80% and (80 min) 1hr 20 min to Fully Charge with that charger.
I swear the original reviews said it took around 2 1/2-3 hrs to charge overnight.
I have to say I have NEVER had a phone last as long as this phone does! The battery lasts forever no matter what I do.

I haven't manage to kill it yet, but it should take 1hr30mins to fully charge maybe less. That's with a fast charger

I keep wanting to test how long a full charge takes, using my intelligent Anker charger. I never get the chance. The phone battery life is simply outstanding. This is like my 8th smart phone, and simply blows the rest out of the water. I even have the EUMI battery saving features turned off. A 50% charge can takes about an hour. Old habits of always plugging it in when in the car or my desk means that I can forget about plugging it in at night. Don't worry about battery life or fast charging - they are non issues.
No QC2
I have tried two different adapters that are QC2 compatible (and work fine with Galaxy Note 4) with USB voltage measurement device; all I can get is 5V and 1A max even when the battery charges from 20% on.
So, no go on QC2
Also tried QC2.0 charger. No fast charging. However, Ampre, does report that it manages to pull 1.3A from the variable amperage ports i have.
I finally got my battery down to 0%. With Ampre reporting:
- Using a 0.5 amp charger, I got constant 460mA
- Using the 1.0 amp supplied charger I got 850mA
- Using my Anker 5A IQ charger (i think they license the QC technology) I only got 850mA. I checked and was using a power not data+power cable.
- Using same Anker 5A IQ charger, and a high quality power only Anker cable I got 1850 mA up until 50% charge then 1600 until 65% charge and 1200 until 85% charge. After that it dropped off rapidly 750 at 90%, and 450 at 95%.
Charging when using the phone lightly - occasional call, calendar update, email - consumes around 400 mA. I do not use any of the Honor power saving features. With this in mind:
- 40 min from 0 to 60%
- 1 hour 40 min from 0 to 90%.
Perfectly acceptable to me with the huge battery. GET RID OF YOUR CHEAP POWER CABLES
So IQ or QC chargers do seem to work, and most importantly make sure you have good quality power only cables. I have a drawer full of cables that were fine with older phones and chargers. They are now in the trash.

worth the extra post - i can confirm the fast charging - was still doing about a percent a minute between 70% and 80% or so. little laggy during setup, occasionally seems to miss a command but dang for the price i can't complain.
using my zenfone2 fastcharger - rox.

yes and no.
if connected to the sony charger then it will charge at full speed. the charging speed is limited by the phone (specifically, by the hardware components inside the phone), so even if you connect the phone to a 100A charger the phone won't charge 100 times faster. Also please note that the battery life is shorten when charging with higher current (for example when using 2A charger the battery is charged a bit faster but the battery will get hotter while charging and probably after 6month you need to replace the battery)
if connected to PC USB port then the phone will charge slowly (USB2.0 current limit is 500mA, newer standards have higher output but your M4 can't tell if it is connected to USB2.0 or 3.0 so it just plays safe to limit at 500mA - but a custom kernel like SkyMelon can change this setting)
M4 has SMB1360 battery charger and fuel gauge controller and it's a QC1. This controller has a max current rating of 1.5A.
