The only current way to root a MJ7 phone is to use vroot. There is an unknown level of risk in using that, but many people have said that they have successfully rooted while seeing no negative side effects.
Please read the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2511815 where the vroot program is discussed.
Direct links to vroot are not allowed on XDA so you'll need to find it for yourself.
Also, since you admit that you're a newbie, please note that vroot installs a Chinese language Superuser control program that many people are having troubles removing and replacing with the standard one. There are a few scripts that people have developed to help with that.

Hey, I'm having a similar problem as your friend did, but I'm kind of a noob and don't understand all the jargon yet. Did you get a clear answer to your question by following the thread that was posted by mezter?

I think that you can find your firmware on sammobile and flash it on Odin . but i dont think that flashing another modem will unlock your device , that can even cause damage to your device . Dont try to flash zip from another model in any situation

You don't need to downgrade your rom. You can flas a modem even if you don't have root. If you have a custom recovery than just flash the modem.

Better off to say Touchwiz sucks as opposed to 4.1.2 sucks. There are 2 developers that still work 4.1.2 and your going to come off real ungrateful for their efforts. There is not a thing wrong with their ROMs. You just have to know how to fine tune them to your needs. Don't bash them if you can't do it. Just don't run them.
Its not the ROM that bricked your phone

what are you talking about.. at which point in my post did i say anything about the developers and what they do? you should really stop posting things unless your going to help. it seems in every thread i make or post a reply your right there with something to say that doesn't help and your in most of the thread I have read with no help other than to say read and look at the super everything thread. Those arent answers when people are asking questions. If anyone takes the time and reads everything than they wont have to ask questions but that isnt going to happen and thats why forums are created, to help and support and I know i've said this before to you on one of my posts. He asked about downgrading and i said that 4.1.2 sucks. Did i say that the developers or the after market roms suck? No I didn't. I've used several different roms and all the after market roms run much smoother that stock.

Dude, you need to seriously take chill pill. I was quoting you, 4.1.2. Sucks.
I have done nothing but try and help you, including coaching you on your ediquite here. With your clueless way of being vague, you are bad mouthing developers. We are trying to keep them here.
I wasn't the one who recently posted about running a Note 2 ROM on our device. No wonder you bricked yours.
Look at my post count, look at yours.
Look at my thanks count, look at yours.
You are everywhere posting about same issues, multiple times and in multiple threads. Issues that only you seem to have.
I have even PM'd you and tried to help, but you only read what you want to read and question more experienced members who have solid practices. Don't want my help fine, don't post without researching your personel issues. You won't believe anybody anyway.
Good luck..........geeeeezzzzz.
Yes I edited this, as I went on a tangent regarding this, but common decency got the better of me. I hope the other one was read though.

Ok. Don`t know about unlocking stuff. Here is a thread where you can find some stock Roms. The first one is 4.0.3.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647756
Just flash the J2 modem and follow the steps.
I had to replace my main board, so I took the ota update, then rooted, then realized I didn't unlock. So I flashed the J2 modem, unlocked, and kept that modem. It didn't do any better than the new modem that came with the update.
This thread turned pretty nasty for such a basic question.
Yeah it did. I flipped my ignore button to the on position and I'm goooood

Unless you have a developer edition you do not have an unlocked bootloader. If you have mk2 build you cannot install a custom recovery. Your only option for custom rom at this point is safestrap and a rom that is compatible with that. You have a lot of reading to do.

You have unlocked phone which does not mean unlocked bootloader. Why did you think this? Please research before you brick your phone.

Many people are running aosp but they never upgraded from the mdk build. Anything past that (including mk2) can only run safestrap recovery with TWiz roms.

Ok I understand its annoying but most people come on here search for a few minutes and if an answer cannot be found they ask for help. No one is going to sit here and search and search and search and search. People have things to do places to be. Do you just sit here and read forums all day long???

There are threads that were created by some of the regulars here (including me) which are there to try to help people avoid bricking their phones and to answer questions (like yours) that are asked on a daily basis. That's what he suggested reading. I'm not sure why you're so unwilling to help yourself understand, particularly given the consequences of ill-considered actions. After all, XDA is not a tutorial site, You're expected to read, understand, and take responsible actions based on your understanding.
Flashing a custom recovery on a post-MDK phone is a completely avoidable mistake. Some of us have spent a lot of time writing up explanations of what you can and can't do, so we'll point to those posts rather than repeat ourselves,
The tragedy of YouTube is that nobody updates - people post a video about rooting their original MDK GS4, That was OK back then, but the multiple releases since then have made those videos invalid, but they stay there, enticing people to brick their phones. XDA didn't create those videos and isn't responsible for fixing the problems caused by them.

The point is that searching and searching is not necessary because all the relevant info is in a couple of pinned threads..... People can be harsh but understand where they are coming - at least you got some useful responses - I would have just ignored (but I guess I couldn't help myself). I trolled for months and read a lot of posts before my first post. Moral of the story is, like the first response said, use safestrap.

People like you that cause so much aggravation in these forums and refuse to take any time at all. You have no problem demanding answers from all of us who take time to read and research........btw, I have set up guides and have a sticky in place to make it easy for S4 owners to understand what they can and can't do with the S4. Grow up.
I think we all need to meet at the flag pole today after school and settle this.

[Q] About to get a S4 from work question

So work is giving me a S4 from Verizon. I am on the fence about rooting it because of it being a work device. They haven't said can or can't root but I don't want to mess it up the first day they give it to me either.
I haven't ever actually used a non-rooted Android phone so it is going to be very tempting to just do it. I am very experienced with rooting devices but not being familiar with the S4 I am a little apprehensive.
My question to the S4 users is there much risk involved with rooting this device? Are there a lot of bricks or is it pretty simple? Any reason you wouldn't root a work device?
I have read through a lot of the threads in the S4 section (have the root instructions) and have seen a few problems but probably no more than any other device. But I have read over the past several months about Knox or something which has caused me to question whether to root or not. This will be my first Samsung Android device.
Thanks!!!

Using SafeRoot to root your phone is extremely safe. Its been tested and used extensively and to my knowledge there is not a risk of really doing anything harmful to your phone using that method. It doesn't trip Knox so in the event you needed it or have to give the phone back just unroot it using supersu and your good!

Can I have a step by step process please. My device is rooted but not "unlocked" completely. I was wanting to try and hack it for awhile but haven't gathered enough information yet. I'm sure I'll be helped here. I've been looking into this for awhile now. Still thinking about it. Also what are the positives of hacking it.
