Can I have a step by step process please. My device is rooted but not "unlocked" completely. I was wanting to try and hack it for awhile but haven't gathered enough information yet. I'm sure I'll be helped here. I've been looking into this for awhile now. Still thinking about it. Also what are the positives of hacking it.

Sorry to say it, but nobody is going to hold your hand like that on xda. That being said, like the guy before me said, it is very easy to learn the process as we have all had to. The best, I repeat, best thing you can do is read read read and search search search. Two years ago, I too did not know how to root or do anything else related to romming my phones, but learned through reading. Everything you need to know and much more is carefully laid out for you already, you just have to read it yourself.

I feel bad for encouraging this kind of behavior, but, this is the easiest method I've seen.
Next time, please do a forum search. Just a single key-word will usually give you the answers you need.

I used the above website to root and it worked flawlessly. Rooted and installed ClockworkMod in minutes. This website also has a bunch of other tips, tricks, apps, ROMs, etc, all centered around the Galaxy Note. Just make sure when you root, flash ROMs, etc, you use the correct stuff. There are two Galaxy Notes. They have different processors and, therefore, have different root methods, ROMs, etc. On RootGalaxyNote, there is a section for both.
BTW, I am also running OnlyOne ICS ROM and its awesome!
/facepalm
Im ALMOST surprised the flaming hasn't started already.
First thing that comes to mind.. if you can't be bothered to search, and read the HUGE POSTS stickied to the tops of the forum labeled "ROOTING FOR DUMMIES" and "HOW TO ROOT" - why do you want your Note rooted? What is it going to do for you?
Read, Read, Read. I read the forums for a week before even thinking about beginning a root.
What I do is open the xda app and spend many sleepless hours reading. Alot. My wife knows that at 2am she can roll over and see me reading, reading, reading xda. Just long press your device and subscribe. Makes it show under the favorites tab.

Hi everyone,
I'm proud to say that I just bought my first android phone, and it is the ATT LG Optimus G.
I'm used to jail breaking iPhones, but I have a few questions about rooting and unlocking the Optimus G. My Optimus G was recently updated from att, but I don't know what was changed on the device. It asked me to update and I put it off, and then later on it applied the update all by itself. So, now I'm wondering if I can root and unlock my phone using the methods mentioned here.
How can I tell if my phone can still be rooted and unlocked? What firmware number or boot numbers should I be looking for on my phone?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Rhem.
First welcome to android! If I was you and since you never done this before. I would use the device until my return policy is up, or at least til 30 days have past. That way if you have any issues with the device prior to that it a simple return/exchange for you.
If you still want to adventure on then here is the thread you need. Please read up BEFORE attempting this. That way you know what you are doing know what to except if something goes wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006946
Also not being rude but remember to post in the right sections. To make the mods job a lil easier
Also there is unlocking the boot loader to flash ROMs and such. That can be found in the development section.
BUT IF I WAS YOU. I would wait til I know I have a problem free device before I jump in to messing with my phone.....

Wonderful advice bro,
And to help out a little more, the developers put an app in the play store called freegee to only unlock after rooted or you can use the aforementioned thread to unlock using your computer after you root

Okay, so after waiting for God knows how long for Jellybean, I finally decided to root my phone.
But, alas, I have NO IDEA how to do this.
I've tried researching it, but everything I find makes no sense whatsoever.
Does anyone know where an easy, step by step on how to root is?

Have you read the stickies on the forum yet?

Follow one of these sets of steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894
Just remember folks that reading all the sticky threads (those are the threads that appear at the top of the threads) is something we're ALL expected to do. Even and especially if you're new here. Also searching using google with xda key words and using the site search function are a must. Not tying to be rude, but we were all new once. Let the new users be an example to other new users.
I figured it out.
Thanks guys!
And yeah, shoulda read the stickies ahead of time.

The only current way to root a MJ7 phone is to use vroot. There is an unknown level of risk in using that, but many people have said that they have successfully rooted while seeing no negative side effects.
Please read the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2511815 where the vroot program is discussed.
Direct links to vroot are not allowed on XDA so you'll need to find it for yourself.
Also, since you admit that you're a newbie, please note that vroot installs a Chinese language Superuser control program that many people are having troubles removing and replacing with the standard one. There are a few scripts that people have developed to help with that.
So work is giving me a S4 from Verizon. I am on the fence about rooting it because of it being a work device. They haven't said can or can't root but I don't want to mess it up the first day they give it to me either.
I haven't ever actually used a non-rooted Android phone so it is going to be very tempting to just do it. I am very experienced with rooting devices but not being familiar with the S4 I am a little apprehensive.
My question to the S4 users is there much risk involved with rooting this device? Are there a lot of bricks or is it pretty simple? Any reason you wouldn't root a work device?
I have read through a lot of the threads in the S4 section (have the root instructions) and have seen a few problems but probably no more than any other device. But I have read over the past several months about Knox or something which has caused me to question whether to root or not. This will be my first Samsung Android device.
Thanks!!!

Using SafeRoot to root your phone is extremely safe. Its been tested and used extensively and to my knowledge there is not a risk of really doing anything harmful to your phone using that method. It doesn't trip Knox so in the event you needed it or have to give the phone back just unroot it using supersu and your good!

No problem.. If you've been around the block with your Nexus then you should be good to go. There is always a chance for things to go wrong maybe I could have worded that differently but you get what im saying. SqfeRoot is the way to I've used it a couple times its really dummy proof. The dev who came out with it is a good dude and can help you if u need it in that thread
Its right in the dev section for our phone couple threads down
