Hi All,
Was holding phone to head on my shoulder and it slipped off. Fell to hard surface. Back & battery door flew off. Reassembled and while I can hear it and it seems to be functioning as it should, the screen is black and doesn't respond to touch (called phone, screen won't lite up, pressed where "Answer" would be and it will not answer).
So, conceded to the fact the phone needs to be replaced.
BUT
Is there any way I can retrieve my data off the phone to put on the replacement? I've got Titanium Backup installed on the phone, but without a working screen, kinda useless.
Is there some way to operate Titanium Backup (or some other product) from my PC and retrieve/backup my data to be able to restore to a replacement phone?
I can hook up the data cable to the PC and browse the phone if that helps/matters.
TIA for any help!
If you saved your Titanium Backups to the SD card and if you have a recent complete (full) backup, you should be okay. Try reading the SD card by using the micro USB cable connected to the Atrix and a PC. If that doesn't work, use a micro SD to standard USB adapter and plug it into a PC. Your TIBu files should be there.
Good luck
My last backup was about a week ago. I've got a few things that are newer than that which I would like to be able to salvage if at all possible.
ADB
Just mount it with adb and pull everything off with android commander or something.
You can try something more..stupid..
If you have multimedia dock, or a usb hub with voltage, connect it, use webtop with a mouse
Said already stupid
But if you have these and it works, you can make a newest backup with tibu

Try screencast. This will allow you to operate phone without the screen working all other methods mentioned won't work because you have to select something for them to work via the phone. I'll get the link

Here is the link. it works. Make sure too launch the program, using adb commands don't work for me.

I don't think your solution to be stupid at all!
Actually it should work great if the phone still works minus the screen and digitizer.
To the OP, if you don't have a dock or Lapdock, I'm sure you can walk in an AT&T store and ask them to let you hook up your Atrix and external drive or thumb drive to one of their lapdocks and transfer your info. I'm sure they will let you.
I've done it once before I got my Lapdock and wanted to check my hacked Atrix!
Oh and forgot to mention that maybe you can find a screen replacement over at CNN.CN and do the replacement yourself. That is if Motorola does not honor your warranty.
Good luck!
So ive had my galaxy s 2 for a few months now, downloaded hundreds of songs, taken near a thousand photos, and yesterday the digitizer/lcd was shattered after being sat on. I can't replace this phone, and my parents who own the contract didn't purchase insurance for it. I am nearly broke, and the repair costs for this part is over 200$, and my parents refuse to pay for this. All I need to do is copy all of the files from my phone to my computer, but i cannot enable mass storage to access the pictures/music on the internal storage because the screen is out. Does anyone have an idea as to how I could fix this, or move the files off of the phone? A thousand thanks to whoever could help me in this/:

Is Android Debugging on? Then you probably could get ADB to work.
If not, then...
Thats the thing. the screens black on my phone cause its broken, so i cant check if its on or not. idk how to use mass storage w/o this):
Droid VNC server may be an option, if you can somehow get it to work.
You have to download the app on the market to vnc with the computer, it would work if I wouldve already downloaded it.. I cant do anything on my phone at all. Thanks for the attempt though

sure you can, plug it in to your computer and just run adb devices, if it shows up, then debugging is on, if it is off it will tell you no device found
so to pull all the files off your sdcard assuming debugging is on..
1. in adb mount the sdcard (I forget the command off the top of my head, but google is your friend)
2. adb pull /sdcard some_folder_name_in_your_sdk_directory

Assuming I understand this correctly, you can still download apps to your phone by logging in to the market from your computer. This may still be an option.

You could always look around eBay craigslist or anywhere else you can think of and you might get lucky in finding a cheap gs2 that doesn't work but the screen is still intact or maybe if you know anyone that maybe willing to let you borrow their screen from their phone for yours if you know how to. I just haven't pulled apart any phones since I came
To the US in 2002 so I'm not sure if its still that simple to do.
I haven't tried it yet so some of the others may be able to chime in but what about the possibility of using the HDMI adapter. I have looked at purchasing one and they are not very expencive depending on the source. I just do not know if it will automatically output the video when connected or it needs to be enabled.

it automatically works. nothing needs to be enabled
1) If you had USB debugging enabled, you can use ADB. If you're not sure - try it.
2) If you had a custom kernel with CWM installed, you can use ADB from within recovery. Recovery does not normally mount the sdcard but you can do it manually via ADB. I can provide info on this IF you can get ADB connecting first
3) HDMI is another possibility - although controlling the device will be problematic if the touchscreen is also failed. (It's possible that touchscreen is semiworking and main AMOLED is busted.)
For getting ADB installed and running, try Droid Explorer.
Been there done that.
Unfortunately, it'll cost some money to do a diy fix with this phone.
Last summer I dropped my htc aria onto gravel and the glass shattered. I googled around and found an oem digitizer for 30 bucks on ebay, and some great how-to-tear-apart your phone videos on youtube. 5 hours and multiple clumps of hair ripped out later, I got the thing fixed. Granted the light from the soft keys now bleeds onto the screen (thankfully CM7 let me disable them) and the trackpad became recessed in too far to use. But it still got me through until I got my SGS2.
Only thing is, my lcd still worked, it was just the glass digitizer that broke.

This is probably your best bet if adb doesn't work.
I have CWM flashed, but I cant tell if im in recovery after holding down the buttons. And im not sure how to view the pictures after i take them in the mode..
You should be able to plug it in to your computer and MTP should connected automatically allowing you to copy your files
My screen broke and nothing on screen is viewable. I also need to drag down and enable USB via my notification bar so anything via USB is pretty much out of the question. Is there any way to restore this phone? Somebody will buy it broken, but it still has all my info on it.
Do you have clockworkmod recovery installed?
Mhl adapter would probably do the trick.

That would work on TW based ROMs. But I think on the other thread the OP made about this he mentioned he is on MIUI. In my experience the MHL adapter does not work on MIUI. But you could use Odin to load a TW based ROM, then use the MHL adapter to copy items to a microSD card, or delete them, or format internal SD. But you can't use USB and MHL at the same time.

try "fastboot" under ADB command, look up this link for background

and basically all you need is to run this: (-w switch takes care of wiping userdata)
fastboot -w
Guys, I ended up being able to project the phones sceen onto my PC via androidscreencast. I finally did a restore but the phone was still rooted and was running MIUI.
The problem is the screencast doesnt work when you go into Clockwork or download mode, so I was blind trying to navigate the menus to flash stock software. Long story short the phone ended up not turning on anymore despite being plugged in, battery removed, everything. It wouldnt work on screencast anymore so I just sold it to my brothers friend who might fix it or sell it for parts.
Not really a biggie for me since I only shelled out 50 via bucks for it via radioshack and got 70 back.
Now im phoneless, waiting for the GS3
Thanks for the help
So glad you worked it out, and congratulations on the unscheduled upgrade. ;-)

Ok so I just upgraded yesterday from the HTC inspire and I must say I'm liking the S3. Except for one thing, no usb mass storage mode? Duuuwwwhhhaaaatttt??? This is awful...just awful.. I work night shifts and play minecraft a lot at work
D) and alwayed used my inspire for transfering the save data on my work computer to my personal desktop at home... I NEED this FIXED.!! I have the 16GB sd card I pulled out of my inspire shoved in the S3's ext-sd slot and would love to know how to use it as a usb mass storage like I did on my inspire.. I have tried the easy ums app and it doesn't work :/ so here I am, humbly asking for help from you geniuses...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Not sure if this is what you're asking but here goes...
I just started using the S3 as well, upgraded from an S2 T989 (T-mobile)
On the S2, when I connect to the USB port, I can "turn on" usb mass storage mode to connect to the PC and I'm not seeing that option here on the S3.
However, when I connect the phone to my PC, I get the following options:
- Media device (MTP): automatically checked
- Camera (PTP)
And when I check on "camera (PTP)", my PC would recognize the phone as SGH-T999. And when I click on it, I would have two options:
- Card (External SD)
- Phone (Internal SD)
From here, I can just copy and paste whatever from PC to SD card and vice versa.

Well let me start with this then..on my inspire, I could plug it up to any computer and it would show up as a disk drive and I could transfer baby file back and forth at my will.
Now that I have my S3, I've realised that they've done any with usb mass storage and adopted mtp. Which doesn't work for me. I get a message 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.'
I can also connect through ptp and it will transfer most files, but not all. It will get to a certain point it gives me the good ole 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.' message.
So overall, my question is simply this, is there a way to enable usb mass storage for the external sd card on my sgs3? Either by fixing easy ums to work for a 1747 or by installing another app that I don't know about.
Btw, my s3 is rooted, running stock Rom and stock kernel, stock everything. I've installed busybox as well.

Well add me to the list of: MTP sucks! This is pretty awful, I mean if there is a work-around fine, but we shouldn't HAVE TO work around just to get Mass Storage support.
As of now we are stuck with MPT.
Works ok though I guess, I can move files back and forth. You can also try using a wifi explorer if your on the same network.

Alrighty!! I've done some snooping around and found this!!!:
Here's a thread for the AT&T S3 on Mass Storage, requires some tinkering though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768752&highlight=mass+storage
So basically if you follow all the instructions, your 1747 will be able to mount its external sd card as a usb mass storage. Tried it myself!!! Amazing!!! Haha!!! Life is good once again...
In addition to the above steps, I also had to do something else. I'm running windows 7, but I don't see why it would be any different for any other windows, and after I installed gscript I had to go to device manager in windows, find your phone (should be under portable devices) and then right clicked and updated driver software. After that finished, the pc had to reboot. After reboot, I ran the scripts in gscript... Aaannnndddd... BAM.! MAGIC.!
I hope this helps those who are frustrated with their 1747 as well... this is a temp fix until a better one comes out... buuuuttt... cheers

I'm not using the I747 (I take it thats the T Mobile branded version), Im in fact using the SCH-I535, Verizon version. Due note that the phone does contain GSM radios so I am able to use it on T for voice (perfect!) and edge data (expected but better then nothing)...
I'm assuming SMS & MMS work as well, albeit untested.

Also, i just ran into this problem... the fix i mentioned above worked on my work computer but now that im home and i tried it..it didnt work.. :/
BUT!! i figured out the problem. The difference between my work and home computer? After that i plugged in my phone, ran the "mount" script and voila. MAGIC ONCE AGAIN!
Just thought i would inform the masses on what ive done so far to fix this problem
There is another option....
Get yourself a little adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027YYMU6/
Then you can plug any USB drive directly into that.. then the adapter into the phone.
Your phone will see it as a normal USB Drive... you can then use any filemanager to transfer files from the phones SD to that USB drive... Unplug the USB, pop it into a computer and you're all set.
I'll admit it's a bit kludgy, but until storage mode becomes available, you can use this on OS's that won't work properly with the existing MTP.
NOTE: Might want to buy a FEW adapters... i bought 1, worked great.. friend bought 2 more.. neither worked.. same brand etc... I have 2 more on the way just in case..but for .79 plus free shipping no reason not to buy half a dozen hehe

The WHY actually is documented around here somewhere... the short version is, with the way the OS is written, mounting the card as USB storage makes it unavailable to the system. Since most of the newer Androids OS use the SD card more heavily (such as A2SD type stuff) it would render applications 'broken' whenever the USB was plugged in.
That's the official story.. I'm not sure I buy it myself as I've seen apps that let you use the SD card on my original EVO AND have USB mode enabled just fine.. granted transfer rates sucked, and occassionally a file would get corrupted, but it worked 99% of the time. I don't know what 'tricks' those apps used to get it to work, but I don't see why Google couldn't use those same tricks directly in the OS.
Another option btw.. is Wifi Explorer Pro. If you're PC is on the same WiFi network, you can run the app then go to a webpage on your PC to upload/download files as needed. It's not as fast as a cable.. but it does work pretty well and is simple to use.
Hi all,
I am experiencing intermittent USB host (OTG cable) connection on Samsung Galaxy S2, Android 4.0.3 (stock unrooted but exotic brand).
I've spotted this when trying out Helicon Remote app with a Nikon D90 camera. Connects and shows live image from the camera and other signs of operation for a few seconds, then disconnects, connects again, disconnects etc, then the app complains over connectivity and suggests to restart the camera...
Similarly, flashdrives are first mounted, then unmounted unexpectedly, then reported as damaged (though still fine on a PC and chkdsk finds nothing).
I believe it is not cable-related because I've tested 3 different OTG cables for the S2, two of them new, and one of them had once worked fine with flashdrives. But that was with Android 2.3.6 before upgrade to ICS, and I also had to replace the USB&MIC board in the phone due to a charging problem (both rev.2.2) in between.
USB Host Diagnostics says GT-I9100, IML74K/XWLPD, verdict Yes/Full. But the test is not long enough I guess.
Normal USB storage connection to PC still works fine (normal cable not OTG for this one).
Should I try another USB&MIC board, or is this more likely a software issue? I've managed to google up a couple of similar case with flashdrives, with no solution, maybe didn't use good keywords. Any suggestions?

As you have tried with 3 different cables I guess it's a software issue, most probably the usb host driver's settings must be corrupted , try a factory reset, and if that doesn't work flash with a stock firmware, try upgrading to Jelly Bean or if you like ICS getting the same firmware and re flashing ain't a bad idea, also since you are rooted try flashing through Mobile Odin if you don't want to go through the hassle of flashing through the computer.
Edit : I don't think it could be a hardware problem as the device when it becomes a slave device works normally and is only having this issue when it becomes master device, only after trying above things you need to think about a replacement.

Tnx. I thought that'd be one way to start. But I'm not so proficient in this flashing business. I think the ICS update brought me less good than hassle, I've wasted a couple of days fixing things. I'm not rooted yet and I was also considering warranty service, but that'd mean trips to the centre and a week without the phone, and I'd want a thorough backup first and that'd require rooting and unrooting AFAIK... ugh. They're probably better for flashing than me, but I guess they might have not tried OTG in their lives
I was wandering if somebody here knows something about the cause of such specific issue, where a working connection drops after a few seconds.

Flashing a stock rom of the same region of your device won't actually void your warranty, you don't need root for that if you are doing it via PC Odin, but since you're not sure I won't recommend it, and I had something similar with my Galaxy Tab 7 plus with stock honeycomb, the connection flickers the first few attempts (I have tried more than 10 time's), first time connected and BAM suddenly some weird error, then it always on connection showed device corrupted, then after some time BAM!! Connected, then normal use, my God!! I also had to face the write_media_storage permission problem too, but all in all I upgraded, then flashed and flashed and finally reached JB aah smoothness bonanza USB OTG works like a charm.
Edit : and for the record Galaxy Tab 7 Plus is S2 with a large ugly screen.

I'm not sure if stock JB is ready at my operator. I've had second thoughts about updating via cable when the USB port is under suspicion. And I hear about nasty developments from Google in recent updates. Since which version is the write_media_storage permission issue?
Btw I've just read in another thread someone found root was required for USB OTG in stock JB?
Is it possible that some odd permission thing would kill USB host comm only after a few seconds?

No, you don't need root for USB OTG in S2, in some devices yes but S2 no... Because it was one of the widely announced feature during it's release and you don't need to concern about the permission issue.. it's honeycomb only lol.
Edit : I mentioned the permission issue just to show you that I had to go through a lot of trouble connecting OTG with my Tab and on upgrading it with JB everything became smooth as butter. The S2 has never had or never will have this problem.

Since you're reluctant to flash via a micro usb port under suspicion I have an idea to flash without touching the computer.. It's actually safe I guess in comparison. It's actually like this :
1.Root device using Exynos Abuse App(I guess you will trigger the counter though)
2 .Install Mobile Odin App
3.Flash your stock firmware via Mobile Odin.
4.Done and Done.

I see that was actually an S2 plus (minus?)
I'd assume the phone would first check permission, then start talking. This here looks so weird, like it starts normally, then does some periodic check and kills it, reminds me of one piracy protection scheme

Ah lol now I understand what you're referring to about that root requirements I saw your other post, in JB one thing was removed that is not USB OTG the thing that needs root is UMS or USB Mass Storage, ie if you have tried connecting to a computer in GB or ICS you can either connect via MTP or UMS for file transfer Samsung removed USB storage mode in JB update.

I tried a couple more things, without changing anything.
The USB Host Controller app. I'm not sure if it is supposed to work correctly without root. On the Info tab it says
S3C USB host driver NOT found
Root hub present, USB host mode is active.
On the USB tab it does shoe the Nikon D90 camera when connected.
I've also tried an USB mouse but it doesn't show it, nor does the mouse light up, nor there is any mouse cursor.
Googling around I understand the mouse does not show up because of a Samsung "whitelist" blocking it. I gather more USB devices used to work earlier but the whitelist leaving only flashdrives mainly came with 4.0.3 update? I could only find hearsay, is there an official Samsung policy regarding this?
And there was a reference to a Siyah kernel which should restore this... or there are perhaps other popular ones that fix this?
And, since the mouse doesn't show up at all, I assume this whitelist has probably nothing to do with my original problem?

Typing this using a mouse in stock rom.
Edit :As you can see that above statement is written using a mouse in pure stock JB, so I don't think Samsung has blacklisted anything and and the mouse used is some unknown weird brand. Since your mouse didn't even light up, I'll say it may be something other than host driver issue, because the host device will always provide the power, you may possibly be facing a hardware issue, the only thing that can assure that it's not a software issue is a flash using a stock rom, or try cm9 stable I recall that OTG worked perfectly in it. Since you're afraid of flashing via a computer, I'll tell you certain steps which will help you flash without using a cable or a computer :
1.Root using Exynos Abuse App (preferably chain fire's app) (search, read and download)
2 . Install Mobile Odin and set it up.
3.Download a stock rom or custom rom(you must read very carefully) , preferably JB.
4.Flash via mobile Odin.
5.make sure you read all related threads several times.

Notice it is SGS2 specific, not Samsung or ICS general. You are using a Galaxy Tab I gather?
I've tried three Logitech mice and one Labtec.
Not that I'd want to use a mouse (a keyboard might be more useful), just want to see what's going on with USB host.

Lol friend, I use a s2 also but also have galaxy tab 7+ which is just like a galaxy s2 but with a huge screen, like I was saying, Samsung may have created a whitelist with ics, but not in JB as I clearly used a mouse in JB, in my s2 I am using a custom kernel so I am not sure about stock in s2 but since now stock JB in my tab support it then stock JB in s2 should also support it. I am suggesting that Samsung must have removed the whitelist limitation in JB.
I am saying this whitelist thingy might be ics specific because in GB stock mouse used to work in my s2, I would have tested it out for you if it weren't ics, ics 4.0.4 stock kernel contains a dangerous brick bug and I don't wanna go anywhere near an ics stock kernel (even though there are other version's which are said to be safe, my heart ain't strong enough to take a risk with stock kernels)
