Going from one ROM to another - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to switch from the latest CM11 nightly to AOKP can I just flash the new ROM from recovery using the same steps I did to flash CM? Or do I have to flash my rooted stock kitkat ROM in order to go to AOKP?

I assume you have a nexus5 from your Sig, if so take these steps
Copy new ROM + gapps to SD
Reboot to recovery
Do a nandroid backup
Do a factory reset (as in wipe all but internal SD - so no extra data wipe)
Flash ROM
Flash gapps
Reboot - profit!
If you want to wipe all, which can be nice
You will need to use adb sideload to install ROM, this isn't hard and what I do most often as I'm ocd when it comes to a clean wipe, just be sure to backup all data from SD to PC first!
Happy flashing!

[Q] From ED01 to Community ROM?

Are the downloads that make up Community ROM flashed w/Odin or sent to phone via usb to sdcard and flashed w/CWM? Phone is currently at ED01, can I simply flash Community ROM or must I go back to stock?
Thanks in advance for your help!
If your rooted and have CWM installed simply boot to recovery and wipe data/cache and dalvik cache and flash the rom via recovery. Download the rom via your phone to your sdcard.

1. Install from sdcard
2. Select from sdcard

First clean reflash after unlocking

Sorry if this is a dumb question...
But I want to go from Jelly Beans v4 to v6 and don't want to dirty install (I want to wipe using stock recovery)
What I'm worried about is losing root or twrp. Are there any pitfalls for the unwary?
What will happen if i wipe data via stock recovery? Will I have to reroot or reinstall twrp before flashing the new zip?

If you are running beans v4 you are using a custom recovery. Not stock recovery.
Reboot to TWRP. Wipe/factory reset/wipe cache/wipe dalvik like always. Install new ROM. No worries.
Nice shiny new clean install of beans ROM.

Thank you! You are always nervous for your first time (pun intended: giggity)
With the whole SD Swap thing i'm having files and folders all over the place. I'm going to save all my files and then format my SD cards and reflash clean.
Another Question for titanium backup users:
When I factory reset and I get the prompt that my device's android ID has changed, should I revert to the old ID or just leave the new ID? For some reason I am having trouble with my todo.txt touch app, no matter how many times i clear app cache/data or uninstall reinstall.
I revert to the old one...seems to ensure all your apps will work. The phone will reboot once you choose to revert and you will be all set.

CM11 freezing upon boot after flashing

my galaxy s4 freezes upon unlocking after flashing the latest cm11 nightlies. ive been wiping cache and wiping dalvik cache before flashing each nightly. i use TWRP 2.6. This is the first time the issue rose

If you have a working backup restore it, then update TWRP to version 2.6.3.1. Then download the latest nightly & Invisiblek's gapps. Wipe cache, dalvik & system. After the wipe, use the back button and install the nightly. Once the nightly is installed, go back again and flash the gapps. When that's finished, reboot the phone and you should be good to go.

Phone has stopped working - need really fast help!

Hi. I tried to flash newest version of GApps (full modulare which I have never use before, allways the stock) and newest version of CyanogenMod 11 Nightly. I'm also using CWM Recovery 6.0.4.6 in my GT-I9300. Someone in CyanogenMod forums told me to wipe all data/factory, cache and dalvic cache to make CM's trebuchet, before flashing a new ROM and GApps.
I tried that and result was that I'm getting the ****ing "PHONE HAS STOPPED WORKING" - problem.. Huger problem is that I need this phone tommorow in work, and it ruins my day totally if I don't get it work by tommorow.
Because of Wipe ALL data / factory reset, I do not have even any backup file in my device. What to do to fix it!?

Can you boot into recovery? Have you got a external sd card?
If yes put another Rom on ext SD (if you have a SD card adapter for computer) boot into recovery and flash again!
If not can you get into download mode? If yes flash a stock Rom with Odin..

Thank you for helping. I flashed stock 4.3 Jelly Bean with Odin by using XDA's tutorial. Now I need to root my phone again to get CyanogenMod 11 and KitKat, but It's okay. Still don't know how to get CM11's Trebuchet work correctly. Problem is that if I flash PAGapps stock package, I get the phone work correctly, but Trebuchet disappears. If I flash full package of PAGapps, Trebuchet should work, but then this error happends and I need to flash stock rom with Odin.
What to try next?

If you are flashing custom roms you do not need to root, custom roms come already rooted...I'm not sure which gapps are compatible with cm11 but have you tried Banks gapps I use them on Fusion kitkat rom (if they are compatible)..
Obviously there is some app in the full gapps that is causing your problem. As for CM11 launcher can't you use another launcher?

ClockWordMod and yes, yes I did all the appropriate wipes
you must root the device, get latest recovery (twrp or philz touch) and then using the recovery you should do factory reset, install cyanogenmod zip and gapps zip.
other cool thing is cyanogenmod installer that does all this for you. go to cyanogenmod.org to get one,it comes as installable apk and instructions how to use usb connection to your pc and steps how to get your clean and stable CM
