Well, [email protected]#k Verizon - HTC Droid DNA

So I send a phone in for replacement. Today my bill shows a $300 device charge. I call... apparently a singular scratch on the screen warrants a $300 damaged device charge. Not a crack, a gouge, A SINGLE SMALL SURFACE SCRATCH!
Talked to numerous reps and managers. They will not reverse the charge. Tried explaining that I would pay the insurance claim charge had I known a scratch would warrant the charge.
So as of an hour ago, I am a T-Mobile customer. My nexus 5 arrives in a few days.
This community has been great and I hope the great development continues for this wonderful phone.
I'll still lurk and help in my thread and with issues, but I'm out yo.

Yeah Verizon's head is way too far up it's ass. I'm going to be an AT&T customer next upgrade I save $171 roughly a month too and gain another 2 to my 8 gb's of data.

I only had to put like $75 down on the phone and it's $14 a month. Not too bad. Plus I can upgrade whenever. And T-Mobile gets Nexus so peace Verizon!

There are always two sides of any story. The fact is that VZW has the largest footprint and the best service of all the carriers - I don't think the stats would lie about that. That said, you get what you pay for. If you pay $14 a month for service, you are going to get your $14 worth.
I've had my share of problems with VZW, but my problems with TMo and Sprint were worse. Overall, VZW has done me right - and I've done some stupid crap and expected to get jacked up by them - and didn't.
My contract is up next week. My DNA is still as good as any phone out there, better than most, way better.
I'd like to know the entire story by the OP, the whole thing. VZW wouldn't charge you for no real reason - in the last 10 years I've had them, I've never seen them do this. And in my experience as a Federal IT guy with close ties to these carriers federal contracts - charging for no reason just doesn't happen.

Sorry to see u go Phaded, good luck. I am going to check them all out in nov also. really love my DNA though, so much great stuff going on right now.

Add me to the list of people jumping ship at the end of the contract.

The $14 a month for for the phone, not service.
And that was the entire story. They are literally charging me $300 for a single surface scratch because "no physical damage can be on the phone"
In my area, Tmo has glorious service, so **** em

Why dont you guys just use your dna on another carrier

While all you switch from Verizon I'll b smiling because I'll have the best service

Most of us don't want to get hit with an early termination fee so we will stay until our contracts run up. Unless you switch to T-Mobile then they pay your etf.

Gotta have it!
I don't like the prices but; I am a salesman and I have to have vzw service as I would not be able to keep in touch with customers. I guess if other carriers had the same coverage they would be the same price.

Oddly, it is opposite here in the Greater Phoenix Area. T Mo gets 20 on a good day, and I always have 40+ wherever I go (besides downtown, every service is slow there).

I had to turn one in for replacement. Screen had a very tiny scratch in the screen. I was afraid I would get hit with the 300 dollar charge bc of it. So I scrambled around trying to find an efficient alternate way to handle my claim. I didn't . I knew it was a gamble sending it in, since once they have it , it's theirs. I rolled the dice. Never heard anything about it. Guess it's all based on discretion. Gotta be a better way. Maybe if they find it not complying with their standard. They simply refuse it , send it back, forcing you to handle warranty directly through manufacturer. Some people can't afford to just shell out 300 for a used phone that was needed bc of a defective phone.

I would love to , if they didn't suck. LOL. Verizon is pricey, and their customer service sucks but their network is untouchable. If you never leave a major metro area, or travel, you have options. But if you travel or live on the outskirts you need a carrier that can provide coverage. Verizon is the only carrier I have great experience with in that aspect. T mobile is buffer city when moving.

[Q] anyone looking

to jump ship when AT&T takes over? I know I don't want to stay, looking to find out about cancelling the contract once the deal goes through (fingers crossed it won't)....
I don't remember exactly, but I remember hearing Cingular customers were pretty much treated like dirt when AT&T took them over, so I'm definitely looking at alternatives. Problem is that I don't think I can ever go back to CDMA... so I may be stuck with AT&T... argh! This sucks!

you should read this:

Our plans won't be changed until our contracts for 2 years are over.
Then you can jump
Come on folks. Just enjoy the phone you've come to love for as long as possible before you consider jumping ship. For all we know it might turn out ok. Gonna be a better device and some great deals when we have to make a decision. Hang in there.

Uhm, this is about carriers not phones.
Unless if your going to Verizon.. then you can just swap sim cards after unlocking...
I'm more concerned about carriers, service and cost. I don't want to go backwards to CDMA, but Verizon speeds are proven to be better than AT&T in large markets, their customer service is known to be substandard, and they're heavy into data caps from what I've read. Doesn't look good in any case. I thought the government broke them up years ago to prevent this exact kind of things from happening. What happened to competition. I've come to love Magenta for the things that the others aren't, out of the box, price competitive and excellent with customer service. Gotta start thinking though about the future.....
I'm a little concerned about this...
T-Mobile gets crap coverage where I am (EDGE Network only) until I get over to the big city (about 30 miles east) and then I jump straight to 4G. AT&T gets better service, but once my contract is up I'll have to start paying AT&T rates, correct? That's my only real concern. The whole reason I went T-Mobile was because they had the cheapest rates for data...
Guess I'll just have to go back to CDMA when my contract expires...sigh...

What's up Sprint?

So my wife is up for an upgrade beginning of April. She has an Evo and its running like a dog and battery life sucks. I call up Sprint and ask if I can get her an early upgrade. There response is "No", we can't do that in our system. So I say you will not offer me anything if I pay the $50 termination fee. You would rather lose a 6 year customer than offer an early upgrade? No wonder they can't make any money. Was I talking to an idiot or is that Sprints business mentality?

Thats pretty much how it is.
I filed Attorney General complaints against them, I filed FCC complaints against them. I spoke to retention, wrote the office of the president.. I dont think I left any stone unturned.
Thats how I ended up here. I had an Epic 4G Touch and it was awful. Worst radio ever. All I wanted was a reset of my upgrade. I didnt get it. After months of suffering with a complaint failure of a phone, I bought a Photon out of pocket.
Im just waiting for my contract to run out and Im bailing. I may go back to TMobile. I had good luck with them and the customer service there was outstanding.
hell im buying out my contract and going to verizon. atleast i will get what i pay for.
it depends on the date you try to get early upgrades, they can do it, trust me, but if you fall within a certain time frame, they just can't, so just call back and see if you can get another person on the line, if they still give you lip, talk to customer retention *remember them, they are your friends* they'll work something out, especially since you actually want to stay with the company
I buy my phones at radioshack. They told me that usually they can get early upgrades approved if you're within 3 months of your eligible upgrade date.

good info on the early upgrades! i have to say, i'm not the most pleased w/ sprint either. I live about 20 minutes from their headquarters and regularly get dropped calls from within my hope. their answer is to buy their in-home tower.. granted it costs money and you need internet service to run it (i use my phone to tether my internet so can't use tower anyway)
anyway, when all is said and done, i don't like the coverage, but the price is really unbeatable for what services you do get ... at least that's my opinion
also - they tell you to pay for the tower to boost your signal, but will give it to you for free if you threaten to leave due to poor signal (friends did it)
i know this is off topic but the reception thing is whats getting to me.. i just signed up for sprint today because they had the lowest deposit for my **** credit and i really wanted the photon. the phone should come in by saturday (i hope) but the reception reviews through sprint are both confusing and scary. a lot of people say the reception sucks worse than any other carrier but some say its the best they've had. also in may area some friends say they love the reception and free roaming where sprint isnt available (using verizons towers) and some say they barely get reception at all and if your not in a populated area you can forget about it. i have played with the photon out in the country FAR away from civilization. went through back roads and held a phone converstion for over an hour on the photon from the country all the way to the city taking back roads and it did not drop my call. this was just one area i know but still pretty amazing.
i guess the real question is.. how is the reception when roaming? i live in arkansas and sprints coverage map is pretty poor here with sprint coverage only in the major cities here and the rest is roaming. and like i said the reviews for sprint coverage vs roaming have been mixed. its hard to get an unbiased opinion because i do know that it has a lot to do with the phones radio and the basic phones which dont have as many frequencies as the smartphones
My problem with Sprint is the high bands that they are using. I never get Wimax indoors, and I often roam at work since it's underground.
T-Mobile uses high bands too, and Verizon is too expensive since they don't have a M2AM plan.
AT&T is actually the best fit for me even with their crappy costumer service. First Tegra 3 phone that comes out, and goodbye Sprint.
Sent from my Photon 4G using Tapatalk
I just did an early upgrade from sprint on 2 phone line, one was due to upgrade in june that one costed $45 and the one for july costed $55. and that's how i got the photon's. that was 2 weeks ago.
I find them to be all over the place. After going back and forth with the people at [email protected] I actually secured a 10 month early upgrade, but my wife's line that is out in April I had no such luck pushing for an early so she can get an iPhone. Even though it would only cost me like $35 to terminate her line all together they were willing to let her go than upgrade her. I think if you have a legit gripe (I did) and are willing to go the distance with them (took me 2 months) then you have a good chance at success. But, in the case of my wifes line where I just wanted an early upgrade, no such luck.
I always recommend emailing your concerns to [email protected]. Some one will call you back directly and then you will have a direct number to call back. This way you open a dialog with one rep.
I'm an 8 year sprint customer. I've lived and worked in the same place since I've signed up. The last 6 to 8 months, signal has been awful. Pretty much coinciding with the arrival of the iphone.
I guess quickly signing up almost 1 million new subscribers has taken a toll on bandwidth.
I bet they will get through this in 6 months to a year, but it sucks horrible now.

Wait, how is it a waste of money? iPhone destroys any Android phone in build quality/software besides the fact that it's such a closed ass system.
Only thing that might top the software is Blackberry, when they release QNX to smartphones and make more powerful phones, cause they're really lacking in that department.

i look at a phone as a long term investment, if i can't get the most out of something that cost 200-300 bucks that i will be stuck with for 2 years tops, it's a huge waste in my opinion, that's like buying a car and your not able to add all your accessories and spoilers to get the most out of something that's gonna be with you for a while, that's why i stick with android, blackberry is for businesses hands down, can't argue with that, so most people that get the icrap are just isheep or they refuse to spend money wisely...IN MY OPINION
NVM, this is going to become a heated debate. Either of these phones being better than one another is subjective, I personally thing, for my needs, iPhone is better, but I got this Motorola Photon for $250 off contract and I'm really enjoying it.
I got a free early upgrade because I had the Evo and kept replacing them. So I know if you are having issues you can get an upgrade that way.

no its not that, its some shenenigans within AT&T's system, an LTE device can't access the internet unless you have their LTE data plan, even the HSPA+ network, I'm guessing it doesn't work the other way around as well, I know from experience how back asswards AT&T's system can be when setting up a phone

We will see. T-Mobile is funny..

You know what the rep said???
Well, sir, ill tell you what, I can offer the one s practically free for you..

Sorry to hear that. T-Mobile totally stuck their neck out to me last year. I went to Calgary and didn't turn off my data roaming. I even got a text as soon as I hit the border, telling me full well that the data rates are HIGH. I tried my best and minimized it's use. Well, I got home to a $850 bill. After talking to a few people, getting on my knees and begging forgiveness, they took 100% of the charges off.
I thought that was INCREDIBLE customer service. Who else would forgive $850 worth of data roaming charges???????

You know what the rep said???
Well, sir, ill tell you what, I can offer the one s practically free for you..
I almost went into rage mode...lmao.
I think what's really happening is this is the age of the downward spiral of customer service. Its not just T-Mobile/AT&T. Its everywhere.

Can you go into a little more detail? I'm not sure what you raged about.
They offered you a phone?
I'm not sure why you experience was so bad.
We've had t-mo for something like 7 years.
I called the loyalty department and asked what they could do for me, and they gave me a $250 credit to cover the cost of the amaze, and dropped our plan price $80/mo

+1 i love tmobile.. great plans, great customer support (even though im on prepaid i get good support). they are the best gsm you can get in the US imo. id rather have verizon but i dont have the money, and they dont really have that great of phones.
Yeah today I called in for something on my account and when the rep said if there was anything I was unhappy about I just said I sometimes get one bar to none of service at home which in reality I get 1-2 bars. They quickly transferred me to the signal booster program and even gave me 250 credit. So now I should be getting full bars within the next couple days and not make a payment for at least two months! Also isn't the warranty program through t-mobile cheaper in replacing phones, and the add on features as well.
After the att break up t-mobile is actually going back up in the competition and they are starting by improving customer service. It's sad you left right at the turning point specially for a phone that is not that much better than the amaze. I wish you luck.

EVO LTE box?

Does anyone have a box from their EVO LTE that they'd be willing to sell? Sprint won't take my phone back without the box; I'd pay dearly to have it super quick (to stay within 14 day window)...
Sent via Tapatalk on my Deck's Reloaded E4G
1st question is, what happened to your box?
2nd, exactly how much is "dearly"? I'd be willing to sell my box.

Well now you know not to throw out boxes for electronics. Wouldn't there be a mismatch in the numbers on the bottom of the box to the phone, they would see that your phone doesn't match the box

There has been reports of mismatched MEIDs between phones and packaging, can blame HTC for it.

This happened to me. Had switch esns to the wrong one on the box which happened to be someone else's and someone else to mine and I spent a long time on the phone convincing them i didn't steal it lol.
Someone at HTC messed up.

Well, let this be my lesson. Keep the box until you are stuck with it! Damn... I didn't even think of that ESN stuff. Good call internet! I am just so disgusted with Sprint (and pretty much every other carrier in this black hole of cellular service),I didn't think the new EVO was worth getting roped into another 2 years... All of the other major players suck around here, from what I hear, so I guess I'll ride it out.
Thanks for the thought though!

Come on, cell phone boxes are so small anyways. I always keep 'em along with all the documentation. Makes selling the phone easier too.
I simply don't have the space, or the patience, to store empty boxes. I can't recall the last time I sold something. Hell, when I bought a new truck, I gave the old one away. I make too much to worry about the hassle of selling something for a few bucks. Of course, my tune will change now, with the stakes being a little higher on this deal... I was going to go back to using my OG EVO, but if I am stuck with this one,I might as well use it. Lesson learned.
Sent via Tapatalk on my Deck's Reloaded E4G
50$ and you can have mine. Let me know and I will give you my paypal address. Now before you go off on how nuts I am to ask for 50$ for an empty box remember one thing. Sometimes lessons are not cheap.
ill sell mine for 45. but when sprint sends back your phone ull have to ship it back to me
Psh! $50? That's not a bad deal at all, considering the possibility of being out $200 for the phone and another possible $350 if I raged and terminated the contract early. Right now, the big problem is being stuck for another two years (and being in a rural area, upgrades are unlikely; I didn't buy the phone for LTE, we will never get it, but 3g speed over 35k down would be nice...).
I guess I hoped that, with a new flagship launch, they would do some upgrades, but that would be wrong. At the very least,I hoped that, by running the stock Sense ROM,I could edit the EPST, and get rid of the Sprint proxies for better speed, like the OG EVO, but that's not working so well...
Let me call Sprint and ask about the ESN on the box; that may be the only prickly part...

ESN business aside, wouldn't they keep the box when I returned the phone? I've never returned a phone so I'm not sure how that works...

If you make so much money, what's the big deal in being under contract.
I never get why people make such a big deal about contracts.
Just pay the termination fee if you want leave and you might never leave.
Usually there is a way to wiggle out.
If you want another phone before contract is up buy it off contract or buy out contract. You make enough money.
I make pretty good money, but I keep my boxes on electronics.
You can on average get a new phone every year for about $100 by always selling old one and using discount every other year.
In this case, money isn't the only issue. I just didn't want to be stuck for another 2 years with **** service (hoped things would get better, but now realize that this is how Sprint keeps customers; it isn't the network or the pricing, it's the phones). The other carriers around here have garbage phones and may or may not have better service. Paying the ETF isn't a big deal in and of itself, BUT paying the ETF to try another provider is a gamble in this rural-ish area. I may end up doing that, being 550 out in the process between the phone and the ETF (not even taking into account the cost of the 'gamble phone') only to find that the others are just as bad...

You don't dump the old provider until you find a better one.
You said they all stink.
There is no such think as being LOCKed into contract. It's silly. You lose a prorated discount of the phone you have in your hand.
The phone itself will more than cover ETF almost at anytime. But you do have to get off your butt and sell it and not toss it in a the attic. If your that casual about that much work for that much money the ETF should be of no concern.
Send me payment for shipping and 20 for the box.

So I think I got swindled by AT&T...

Ok about a month ago, I wanted to switch from T-Mobile because the rural coverage was pretty garbage. Edge speed was so slow, it would not load a single page.
I walked into the AT&T store with my unlocked HTC One, and wanted to sign up for service. At first they were cool with it, and then the balked... "If you trade in this phone and pay an additional $26, you can have the black one which is guaranteed to work on this network". Now, I was ANIMATE at the time about not signing a 2 year contract. I brought my own phone, so there was NO REASON to sign up. At no point did he indicate that I was required to sign up for a 2 year contract to receive this black phone, when I just traded in the exact same phone in perfect condition which was only 2 weeks old.
After I got my first bill, I was on the website checking out my features. It says I am eligible for upgrade in 2015... meaning, I am on a 2 year agreement. I did NOT want to be on any agreement like this, so I need to know what my options are.
Thanks.
EDIT/UPDATE: This was an authorized dealer, not an AT&T corporate store. I honestly did not know they were different - they look exactly the same. Either way, I got a refund, and was allowed to keep the phone even though I canceled service immediately. I went back to T-Mobile as they were always pretty awesome (just the coverage in rural areas is still going to burn).
Have you called anyone at AT&T to verify your suspicion?

Yea, you got taken to the cleaners on that one.
Your only option of getting out of the contract is to return the device and cancel service before the trial period ends. That means porting out to save your number if you came from T-Mobile with the line.
As far as getting your old device back... well, good luck:cyclops:
Was it unethical by AT&T, yes.
However, you were a bit gullible there, the portion of trading in your phone was a HUGE red flag:silly:
You never get an AT&T device subsidized without ending up in contract, period.
The point made about even exchange is simply mute.. When taking advantage of the trade in, you only get trade in value, not the $600+ MSRP. And the trade in value 'may' have cancelled out the AT&T branded device, however, you still got taken to the cleaners on this deal.
The sales people in stores get paid by signing up people to contracts. I don't think it was At&t as a whole that screwed you but that particular salesperson F'd you good to get paid.
Just check your paperwork and make sure you didn't sign anything showing a contract. Your best bet is to raise holy hell in the store with the manager and single out this salesperson. If that doesn't work move on to corporate. Good luck.
You didn't get swindled. If they gave you a device at a subsidized priced (which they did) you physically signed a 2 yr agreement. Did you not read what you signed?
I can't say I feel bad for you at all. Common sense.

Now you say you were animate about bot signing up for a contract. Does that mean you informed the sales rep that you weren't interested in a contract? If so then yes, the sales rep screwed you hard for not explaining that you would be entering a 2 year agreement if you traded for the black one.
However, you should have asked more questions about the deal to get a better understanding. But it does sound like the guy was trying to get you on a contract without you knowing, seeing that he tricked you into it by offering a simple color change.
If this was less than 14 days ago go into the store and raise hell on earth, you will garuanteed be able to return the phone. As for getting your old phone back, I'm sure you signed something about it saying all trade ins are final. If it's been over 14 days....good luck. Trying to return a phone after that to AT&T is near impossible..good luck!

Jeez , at worst you could have sold your tmobile one for like $450 and bought the black one on contract for $199 like normal.
ATT def screwed you on this one.

The AT&T store admitted guilt to me, however, they said they could do nothing since I am past the 14 day return policy. Basically the guy had me sign a 2 year contract while masking it as a phone SWAP and not a subsidy purchase.
So ya, to the above posters - AT&T was at fault. The credited my account with the value of the phone, minus the 2 year agreement price.

Everybody knows that when you receive a device at a lower price = conract. You do understand that the contract is what gets them their money back that they lost on the phone.
Do you honestly think they would stay in business if they did what they did for OP every time?
OP ya blew it, don't go blaming that sales rep. He knows he is right, and if you have ever worked in customer service you know that arguing with the customer is a waste of time.

I won't go blaming the sales rep who was fired for doing this to multiple customers in the last 2 months. Gotcha. Ok buddy You know everything. He was masking a 2 years subsidy with a phone swap, claiming the phones wouldnt work on AT&T. When a sales rep says its a swap and would not require a 2 year contract, you tend to believe him. The phones worked fine on AT&T, and he was just cashing commission checks at the expense of the customers. A few people figured it out in the 14 day return period, but I did not think to look at my bill.
So basically you are wrong

Hell no you don't. A phone swap pretty much implies he shouldn't be getting a contract. Why would someone think "oh if I give them my phone for a phone gaurenteed to work on this network, esentially buying it at full price, it's a contract?" Some people here need to not be such jerks about this.
