Issue: Connects but then No Internet access
(I've already read other relative threads searched)
- App is "Wireless Tether for R.. U.." (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/)
- Has worked flawlessly for over a year until what seems like a few days ago. (no new apps added, etc.) - I am good about data usage.
- But now the Wi-fi tether starts, laptop devices connects to it fine, but then after 5 seconds laptops indicate "No Internet" (as no data gets to the connected device(s). Data on phone is fine though, just not through the wireless tether.
- Also deleted, and downloaded 3.1-beta14 apk just to make sure a recent app upgrade may have lost something... same result though.
Version is 3.1-beta2 (latest for Tbolt)
No ROM change ever made from Standard Thunderbolt/Veriz
Key Settings:
Device profile set to Thunderbolt
Setup Method = Auto (changing to Adhoc does not affect result)
New option "WiFi-driver reload" is checked (unchecking does not affect result)
"HTC routing-fix" activated (unchecking does not affect result)
Numerous restarts, reconnect attempts with different settings, etc. - nothing works.
Please help, it no longer works.
Anyone else recently experiencing this?
Have you tried an older version just to see if it helps?
Did you change a kernal or radios? Just trying to cover all the bases..
I could never get wireless teather 3.x to work at all. use the older 2.x versions
I use 3.1 with no issues

Make sure disable wake lock is checked and also disable access control if activated. Hope this works.
If it doesn't, let me know and I'll give you a run through on all the settings on how I set mine up.

Download the latest version from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Select the NexusOne profile and activate wifi driver reload, mss clamping and routing fix.
The other options are up to you (security, ssid, acces control...) but it should work assuming you have an aosp rom. For sense i think it's the same except that you can actually choose the thunder as the device profile.
So if I use an aosp rom I need to select the Nexus one as the device profile

This worked for me. THANKS!!!
Long-time viewer, first time poster here on XDA. I just wanted to provide some information on setting up WiFi tether on mforminio7's SlimRom v1.7.
(1) Download WiFi Tether for Root Users by Müller, Lemons, Buxton from the Play Store.
(2) Open app, click Menu >> Settings.
(3) Set "Change Device-Profile" to Generic ICS
(4) Set "Change Setup-Method" to Netd (master)
(5) If applicable, set Wifi Encryption to your liking
(6) Scroll to "Routing Fix" and make sure it is checked.
Thanks to Müller, Lemons, Buxton for the awesome Wifi Tether app and mforminio7 for developing the nimble SlimRom.+
UPDATE: XDA member Cares has provided a link to SirGates' Wifi Tether v3.2 Pre1 app which recognizes the HTC Rezound. The link is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540707
Thanks to Cares for providing this information. See Post #6 of this thread to thank.

The built-in wifi tether requires a verizon sim card. this bothered me a lot. tried this method, and it works. thank you very much.

Why not use updated WiFi tether which has a Rezound profile and infrastructure mode?

Now that WiFi Tether supports S4 users, I was wondering if people would like to share their settings so we can get this thing dialed!
I'll report in if I find a good combo.
Updated:
It appears that default settings work fine with or without WiFi encryption work.
However, it appears that the CrossBreeder installable zip is conflicting with it whereas it doesn't conflict with built-in hotspot.
It appears that CrossBreeder also had issues with the Note 2 WiFi Tether.
Will investigate.

Not here either, along with the 50 other setting combos I tried before giving up and waiting of official help..
the only rom that i've tried that it works perfectly in is synergy. wifi encryption and changing ssid both work, you just need to reboot each time after changing each setting. i couldn't get it to work in hyper. one guys stated that native tethering doesn't work in hyper so it could be that that hack conflicts with the wifi tether app.
I have default settings work sometimes on beans, but it will cut out periodically from the net even though the Wifi connection stays up. It is strange.

try killing the apps...
I see your wifi it on..I was having TERRIBLE idle battery drain while on Wifi. I did everything I could think of...
Until I went into one of my old Access Points and saw that "Multicast" was enabled. I turned it off and since then my Android OS levels went way down..At one point it was keeping the phone awake almost Half of the Phone On time.
THis killed me for 2 weeks...Look through all of your Router and your attached Access Points (if you have any) and disable Multicast..
Let me know if it helps out.. I'm curious if others were as affected as me.

If you are rooted you can run a "Shark" log. - Available via Store
This helped me a lot...I was able to see what IP's were causing the most traffic...Stupid me though..Even though I keep track of all of my LAN devices, I forgot that my *.*.1.2 device was actually my OLD access point that I use for legacy devices...For a while I was looking at it and thought it was the New AP I have (that the phone was connected to). If I wasnt so stupid, I would have narrowed it down sooner.

Thank you for the reply but can you help walk me through this

It depends on the type of router /Access Points you have.
How are you set up?
Do you know the make and model of your Wireless Device (Router/ or Access Point)
Are there more than one in your location?
Note--If you are using a public or school's AP, then you are out of luck in less you have some friends in high places.
I
I need to keep wi fi on though for data purposes and a few other reasons. Andbi also am connected to wifi at school and friends houses and other places

Disabling Multicast on the router will not disable the wifi.
You will need to find out the maker of your friends Router or access point that you connect to..Form there, just look through the settings .(can even try looking it up - Example - Google "Linksys disable multicast"
As far as your school - I cant help you there unless you know someone in the Network department that is willing to make a system wide unauthorized change.. Prolly not gonna happen. So I cant help you there..Sorry

You can sign in via Phone or computer. The address is usually 192.168.1.1.
I do not know your user name or password.
If you do not know your router's address, and you are on a PC open a command prompt and type ipconfig. Look for your gateway address.
get your gateway from your phone go into "Settings" COnnections" "Wifi" click on your Current wifi connection - Click VIEW - Your gateway will usually be the first sets of numbers...and the 4th will be a "1"...example - 192.168.1.1 or 10.10.0.1
Once again..I do not know your routers name or password - Nor can I help you get them.
Once you are signed into the router, look for the Multicast setting - It is usually in the "advanced" section
Good Luck

On the Asus RT-AC66R it shows as Multicast Rate(Mbps). Might be named differently on different routers. What router Model and Manufacture do you have?

I'm offering a $50 bounty to anyone who can create a custom stock Oreo Kernel that has the TTL module in iptables and ip6tables. I need to change the TTL and Hop Limit to bypass a hotspot restriction for an iot device. Either I pay $50 USD/mo service, or I pay $5 a month unlimited at 2g speeds but no hotspot (T-Mobile MVNO). I can only bypass if I tether like this:
1. LG G6 Unrooted with SIM HOTSPOT ON (no Internet access because of TTL)
2. LG V30 rooted with TTL set to 66 via TTL Master app (client to #1, LG G6) HOTSPOT ON (no Internet access because of TTL)
3. Actual linux client to the V30 (#2) (Internet access checks out, works! Because TTL is 64 at this point)
Even if I hotspot from the V30 with a TTL anywhere from 61-69, the data on the actual client #3 is blocked. The client (#3) is a smart plug running it's own little linux OS and obviously has a TTL of 64. I don't want to bother modifying its firmware. I set my APN settings to IPv4 only to no avail in this case.
I also set my APN to IPv6 only and changed the hop limit on my V30 from 61-69 with sysctl to see what would work, but data was still blocked.
(about 21 entries total with softap0, p2p0, rmnet_data, etc)
sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.hop_limit=66
sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.hop_limit=66
Most android kernels don't have the ttl module and will throw an error when attempting to set the ttl or hop limit, so I'm requesting a custom one for the V30 like this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/mod-magisk-stock-ttl-tethering-fix.3836216/
Is there also another way to change the IPv4 TTL permanently or on boot? Or change a specific network interface's TTL without IPTABLES? The TTL Master app in question runs a command to change the TTL on this file "/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_default_ttl", then toggles airplane mode to take effect. What's an easy init.rc script I could add to Magisk or AFWall+ to set the IPv4 TTL?
