I'm having the strangest problem: I cannot get into CWM recovery mode by booting with the volume down button pressed. I just get a SONY logo, followed by XPERIA, and then the colorful flares of the stock ROM, as if I weren't pressing the volume down button at all.
I have unlocked the bootloader, rooted my phone, and tried three different methods of installing CWM:
1. using cwm 1.0 nypon script
2. using Team XHRR cwm script (which seems to be the same one)
3. installing the Recovery X app
All of these scripts seem to do their job succesfully, but when I shut my phone down, and boot again with volume down pressed, my phone just boots normally.
Can anybody help? I really want to install kitkat!

Which thread are you referring to? This one uses CWM to wipe the drive and flash the phone...
Anyway, if anyone else would read this thread looking for a way to access CWM, there are ways to access it without using the buttons. You can use the adb command "adb reboot recovery" or install an app to reboot to recovery mode. I found a guide on theandroidsoul .com - I'd post the link, but I'm not allowed to post external links yet...
thx and grtz

1. Fastboot kernel (f)rom zip, there you have CWM recovery.
And don't forget to copy the zip to your internal memory before you flash the kernel.
You can flash a stock kernel with built in cwm. Many kernel is working out on this with cwm.

I tried the following 3 options:
(i) Using ROM Manager to reboot into recovery
(ii) Holding power button down and selecting recovery
(iii) Rebooting and holding the power button down, with both volume buttons
I dont get it. I even used ROM manager to update latest recovery version but nothing. I used to be able to install specific zip files when using a Team Whiskey ROM earlier but cant since I installed this Axura ROM.
Really appreciate your help.
Figured it out.

wt19i does not have a built in recovery like the samsung phones.
you have to install it.
if you have root already, then proceed to this thread and follow instructions.

Unless you're talking about CWM recovery (keep pressing repeatedly volume down when you see Sony logo, until you enter CWM), there's also a so called 'safe mode', check this thread.

You can't install cyanogenmod before you have unlocked your bootloader. You can unlock by official sony method for developers (look in my signature for a guide) or by testpoint method. Otherwise you can't install a rom for unlocked bootloader because you aren't able to flash a kernel boot.img.
When your bootloader is unlocked, in most custom kernels cwm is integrated
Don't try to flash a rom for unlocked bootloader on a locked bootloader, otherwise your device will brick and you will have to flash the original firmware with flashtool!
Ah btw to install cwm on ics you must have rooted ics (you can't root ics like gingerbread firmware .42, you will have to do it like this) and then you can download the x-parts app from playstore which can automaticly install cwm
I rooted device and have X-Parts.
Installed Recovery 5.5.0.4 by pvyParts.
I am able to restart in recovery mode.
Do I understand it right?
Even if I have recovery installed I won't be able to install CM or other ROM with locked bootloader?

You can install roms especially made for locked bootloader, like ics based "real ics lite" or "MiniCMSandwich". There are some MIUI rom's around here, too, but stock rom is the smoothest

Hello there!
This question might have appeared alot but I'll try to be as short and accurate as possible on the following:
About two weeks ago, I decided to root my Sony Live With Walkman (4.0.4 Ice cream sandwich) and now I'm thinking of installing Cyanogenmod 9 stable release. But I'll leave this mod for the last part and let us focus on the rooting process I've done.
I've used the following tutorial: talk.sonymobileDOTcom/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0
At first, I was unsuccesful but in the second try I had managed to root my device (Unlocked bootloader).
Being a bit tired over the official Sony ICS, I thought of putting Cyanogen to my device. This is where the things get confusing for me:
I've spotted multiple tutorials and each one is different and unclear to me. These two are the ones I'm thinking of as the most reliable sources:
- wiki.cyanogenmodDOTorg/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_Live_with_Walkman:_Full_Update_Guide
- technologic101.wordpressDOTcom/2012/03/12/tutorial-how-to-install-cyanogenmod-9-0-ics-on-your-se-xperia-2011-device/
So, I have Cyanogen9 coconut, drivers, fastboot, google apps and proper FTF file downloaded.
But what now? Which tutorial is better and accurate for my state of device? Am I risking a brick by doing this? What are the current downsides of Cyanogenmod9 for this device?
Please, write your opinions, explain or link me to the proper guides for my case. I am grateful for any kind of information you give me!
Thanks!

Is kernel the TFT file or the Cyanogenmod zip file (about 125MB)? And how do I flash this with Flashtool?
Boot.img inside the zip is the kernel. Extract and flash that file using fastboot. After flashing the kernel, start your phone and enter recovery. From recovery flash the zip files

Okay then you have done have of the work.
Now backup all your contacts, apps, sms's etc. Then power off your device and boot into fastboot mode. Then take the kernel from the CM9 zip and flash it. After that start your phone and just when the logo gets brighter press the volume down button with which you will boot into the CWM recovery. After that navigate to backup and restore and backup your rom. Then do a wipe data/factory reset ,then wipe chache and after that go to advanced and then wipe the Dalvik Cache. After that go to install zip from sd card and then choose from sd card. then navigate to your rom and flash it. After the flashing is done flash gapps and then reboot.
Note: To navigate in CWM use your volume keys and use the home button to select.
To enter Fastboot: Plug the usb cable side into the phone and while you are plugging it into the computer keep
your volume up key pressed.
To flash a kernel: Put the kernel you extracted from the zip into your fastboot folder. Then open a command
prompt in that particular directory ( in Windows 7 press shift in a blank place and right click).
Then enter this command fastboot flash boot boot.img(Your phone must be in fastboot
mode for this.)
In my signature, there's a guide how to install a custom rom/custom kernels, maybe this could help you!
I would use the cyanogenmod full update guide :good:
You don't need any ftf, you flash a custom rom with clockworkmod (cwm), but this should be explained in the guide

It depends. If you wanna flash any CM or AOKP roms you have to flash thier respective kernels. If you want to flash any stock based roms you can flash any ICS or GB kernel you want like Mesa, Panic kernel etc.
As for how to flash a kernel refer to my post on the page before.

That didn't work. When the Sony logo gets brighter, a blue LED lights up for that moment.
In cwm, selecting 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery' opens up a box where my phone model is displayed. After that, it says it's unsupported and I can manually select either 2.x or 3.x+. I've selected the 3.x+ one and in the menu it says 'Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.X.X.X
Shall I try with 2.x? I have no clue here.

Recently got a used Galaxy Note i717,went to install the ICS update but it would not update thriough KIES.Find out the previois owner had rooted it so I just install the stock ICS firmware manually following a guide I foiund. One problem, when I hold down POWER + VOL.UP I dont get tge screen that lets you wipe cache and what not.
Phone seems to be.working fine so far, been using it a couple days but what happens when I want to install a custom rom?
Any ideas?
Thanks.
If you put a custom ROM, it will wipe your device, which you have to, for installing a Custom ROM, and all custom ROMs are rooted btw. And yes I stay away from KIES...
You might of lost recovery when you install the ICS firmware. Here is the Super Thread with all the tools and ROMs.>>>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740367
If you are rooted, I would put the latest TWRP here>>>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647575
Then just find the custom ROM of your liking and download/install on your device, FTW.
The correct procedure to boot into Recovery is :
Hold power + volume up AND volume down until you feel the phone vibrate THEN release the power button (still holding volume up and down). The phone will then boot into Recovery. It should either be " Clockwork Mod Recovery " or "TWRP". There, you can wipe, install, backup, etc.

Its neither, it's stock recovery.
You have to flash a file from your pc to the phone to replace stock recovery with a custom recovery like CWR or TWRP.

It comes down to personal preference really ...
As CWM does a fine job as a recovery. But TWRP has many more features for the user, and seems to provide a much better user experience.
TWRP is clearly better supported, without the common outdated "status 7" errors often found in CWM.
Up to you obviously, but it's TWRP for me ....g
^^^^^ well said, Sarge. I was a CWR user for ten phones and tablets, but I tried TWRP on this phone. Its the bomb-diggity.

If you think you have installed CWM perfectly but its not starting in CWM mode, do following...
Check if CWM is installed perfectly and can be started with ROM Manager. Install ROM Manager and start ROM Manager and select Reboot to Recovery. If this time it starts in reboots in recovery mode, that means CWM is installed perfectly. If CWM mode does not start here, you might have not yet installed it properly.
Switch off phone, now press Volume Up and Home Key together (KEEP THEM PRESSING) and now press Power for 3 seconds and leave but don't release other two buttons. When you see LG logo release other two buttons. Now it should start in CWM mode.
WARNING: Dont press with Volume Down, otherwise you will BLANK the phone (HARD RESET)
thank you!
i will try it imideatley!
EDIT: i tried it with Rom Manager and it worked (it bootet into CWM)
Thanks!
