Just got one of these, primarily for use with my Galaxy s4, but I tested it with the notepro 12.2 as well.
Works ok, but there are a few notes:
SD slot and USB slot are mutually exclusive; only one can be active at a time.
MHL will work at the same time the USB slot works. I tested with flash drives and a usb keyboard.
adapter doesn't seem to want to accept or pass on more than an amp. I have several chargers that I use, ranging from 500ma to 2.1a, and I initially thought that the problem with the USB/SD slot running at the same time was a matter of power. Turns out this isn't the case. The most I could get to pass through to the device was 700ma by suppliying 1000ma.
This does mean that you can power the device at the same time that you use the mhl output and the usb host, but with minimal amount of charging.
If you look at the adapter, you will see that the end that goes into the device is a micro-usb male adapter attached right to the bulky device. This is going to be a just for occasional usage only sort of thing, It is not very sturdy.
I suspected as much when I ordered it, but the other similar adapters with more sturdy configurations or pigtail cables plainly stated that they were mhl /or/ host mode not both at the same time.
I am on the lookout for a straight through 11-pin extension cable that will work. Any ideas?
I wish listed this thing as soon as I saw it!

About the charging issue, if I were to run Netflix and charge at the same time, would it charge or just not drain as fast, also does the hdmi out handle audio?

I specifically tested running Netflix, July, and Dish anywhere access while outputting via HDMI. Depending on your charging rate from whatever cable youbare using for power, you should be OK, but probably it will charge a little slower. I have mine hooked up to a 1amp charger and it's registering +700ma pretty reliably. I've been using the phone as a thin client for the past few days outputting to HDMI and it's taken a charge OK.

Not quite, the adapter requires power so you also need to plug a standard charger into it, plus you need an HDMI cable to go from the adapter to the TV. Frankly for now it's a more cumbersome solution than micro-HDMI as in the previous EVO (& Moto phones), since that was a 1 cable/adapter solution (unless you also wanted to charge the phone)...
In the future TVs will have MHL ports tho and you'll be able to output from phone to TV AND charge off the same MHL/USB-to-MHL/HDMI cable. For now tho, we have to live with the MHL to HDMI adapter with a charger plugged into it. Personally I think HTC & Samsung jumped the gun with this, by the time people have TVs that make MHL a better option than microHDMI we'll already be looking at the next generation of phones (if not the one after that).
P.S. I don't think it's necessary to bump three old threads on the same topic to get an answer to a question that has in fact already been answered on these boards. Just sayin'... Search button works.

That... Doesn't exist. The EVO 3D doesn't even have a microHDMI port, and standard HDMI of any kind doesn't transfer power (that's what MHL is for, to eventually allow a single cable power/video solution, duh).

The Evo 4G uses Micro HDMI. The Evo 3D uses MHL.
They are down to $14.02 on Monoprice now.

Is it just me - or using this monoprice adapter makes the phone charge in USB mode and not AC mode (50-90% reduction in charging current?).
I've tried several of my chargers that always report "AC charging" under settings, about phone, battery use (1000mA?)
but as soon as I plug in the monoprice MHL, it drops to "USB charging" (100mA - 500mA)?
I bought two of these Monoprice MHL adapters and both seem to do this. I've tried with four or five different micro-usb AC chargers and one DC cigarette lighter charger... all to the same result.
The result, for me, is that the phone charges at 1/10 the speed of normal - indeed depleting my battery even though it's plugged in to the charger (via the MHL adapter). Even turning my screen brightness all the way down and turning off all non-essential radios... still results in me not being able to watch a full movie before battery dies.
Is it just me or does MHL suck compared to the easy microHDMI of the evo4g?
Yeah it's kinda more cumbersome, eventually when TVs actually support MHL and we don't need these pass thru adapters then it'll be great as it'll be a single cable solution... It was implemented way too early on phones tho.

I can definitely confirm you're limited to USB power using the Monoprice adapter. BUT I'm definitely not losing battery power that fast. In fact, if I'm playing movies off the memory card - I'm still charging the phone. If I stream something while connected, my battery will drain - but nowhere near as bad as you're reporting.
I guess your ability to charge while playing from SD card is to be expected. Radios/streaming take a lot of power.
My normal use-case is 4G streaming netflix, hulu, youtube, hbo go via the MHL/HDMI to a pico projector. And it kills the battery REAL quick even with screen backlight to lowest, bluetooth and wifi off. I'll start experimenting with underclocking undervolting... to find the sweet spot of acceptable fps playback but little enough power to get under that threshold of charge from the adapter.
Anyone recommend a good program to see mA currently being used vs. mA drawn from charger?
Yeah, MHL seems like a great idea - except that not a single TV or device provides it. To me, seems a bad / annoying decision like providing USB5 in 2011... sure it's a cool technology - but isn't the point to be able to interface with EXISTING infrastructure? Annoying also that we NEED to plug in charger to use it.
Is there a MHL adapter which charges the XZU? I have tried two different adapters so far and both will output to the HDMI monitor but will not charge my XZU. I am connecting the MHL adapter to an USB power charger which provides 2A. If not, I may go the route of buying a DK30 and taking it apart to use the magnetic charging.
Be aware that there are two types of MHL adapters. 11 pin and 5 pin. The Ultra supports 5 pin, and only Samsung devices supports 11 as far as I know. I have a cheap 5 pin from Ebay and it charges the Ultra when it's connected. That's the point of the whole "plug in your charger". That's only MHL 1.0 or 2.0 though, and I belive 3.0 which is pretty much all new this year supports direct plugging, and you won't need to plug a charger in to use it. That's either 2.0 or 3.0, I'm not sure. I belive the Z1 supports 2.0/3.0, but I'm not sure about the Ultra.

It's good to know the one you have will charge the XZU. Maybe I'm just having bad luck in choosing MHL adapters and getting ones that do not charge. For the two MHL adapters I tried, both needed the charger to display the picture on the monitor but, as mentioned, does not charge the phone itself. I also checked under settings and power management and the phone reports "discharging". Hopefully, third times a charm.

I have this 5pins MHL + 11pin convertor..
Mine is charging my ZU while playing movie on my plasma tv of course with a 2A charger too...
11pins doesnt display anything on my tv...
Yeah, the 11-pin adapter is for Samsung devices. I finally found one which outputs to HDMI and also charges my phone. Was the third MHL adapter I bought.

I hooked up the tab to the tv, cranked up netflix and nothing. I plugged in the power adapter and got a picture. So needs charger to plugged in to work. I wasn't real keen on the output, but was only testing for connectivity. Might come back and edit after I have chance to adjust settings.
Today, I plugged the cable into the second hdmi port on my tv and it does mirror the tab display. Good response time too.
The charger is necessary but it does not charge the Tab. Left it plugged in and battery was down to 38% before i noticed.
Maybe a hardware error? Because under features it's described that it will charge your device...

Probably not a hardware error. I'm on my 3rd dongle that's supposed to charge your tablet while using connected devices. Everything works except for charging the tablet. Have a red X on the charging symbol while the battery continues to drain. It does charge the tablet while it's off. I have a power hungry Tab Pro 12.2 that has trouble maintaining a charge while playing a couple games with the stock 2 amp charger. I'm beginning to think that none of the HDMI dongles out there are capable of delivering the current necessary to run the larger tablets.
Ah, I see. It's because not enough power through the micro usb. You need 2A but this adapter's only delivering 1A.
It seems, there a no adapters with 2A...
I have a ton of usb chargers gathered over the years. Largest i have is only 5.1 volts. Tab has a large output. Wonder if other devices could be damaged using it or is output regulated by draw of whatever it is attached to? At any rate, i don't think any of the dongles or otg cables have a power source other than what is supplied by the tabs adapter. So are you thinking it is an issue with the pin configuration on the adapter? It is a 11 pin connector. Sure wish there was 1 standard for everyone instead of everyone having their own.

It's not limitated by the pins, there are just for more or less possibilities for an interchange (at least a salesman told me that). It's limited by the inside electronical components. Maybe anybody out there to explain it better or correct my words?
If I remember correctly (it's been a couple years since I tested it), my S3 required the Samsung charger + Samsung wire hooked up to the HDMI (I have the Samsung HDMI adapter) to charge the device while mirroring the screen. I tried it with a more powerful power adapter (2.1 amps vs Samsung 1.x amps) and generic wire but the phone would lose power over time. I could even charge the phone while mirroring if I used a generic Samsung wall charger and Samsung cord that was listed as 0.8 amps.
I bought the official Samsung one a few weeks ago and it is working fine, it also charges the device while using it but you have to connect a charger to the MHL-HDMI adapter.
Sadly I recently flashed CM11 on my TabPRO 10.1 and now the adapter doesn't work anymore. I get picture but no sound Was so happy about getting CM11 official on my device, but this feature is something I can't live without so I'm going to have to hop back to stockbased

Hey everyone, so just reading all the comments regarding the HDMI adapter not charging your tab while it is plugged in with the charger, I have also had issues with it and also with my Note2 and the Samsung Smart Dock I use with it. But I did however manage to find the solution to why it would not charge while on the HDMI dock that is connected to my T.V. It seams that if you plug either the Smart Dock or even the HDMI connectors to the HDMI cable first then plug in the charger it will show its charging but will eventually lose charge while outputting an HDMI output, instead, you need to first plug in the charger cable into your HDMI adapter, then plug it into your phone or tablet and finally plug in the HDMI cable into the adapter, I have found this to be the way to keep my phone and tablet charging while also having the HDMI output connected to my T.V..

I was wondering if there is a way to increase the charge rate while connected to an MHL adapter.
I have a 2014 Civic Si that literally has an HDMI input for the head unit.
I bought an MHL adapter and it works very well other than a safety limitation that stops screen mirroring while driving, and the fact that even if I am just using it to get the best quality audio into my head unit with the screen turned off, the MHL adapter uses more current than it returns to the phone, resulting in battery loss.
I have the usb power connected to a 2 amp 12v charger that works fantastic when it is just connected with a regular micro usb cable so I know its not the charger.
I have found some evidence that there is a mod that can basically tell the phone that it is connected via AC to take more current.
Would be awesome if someone could provide this, or another solution to this problem. I imagine there are a lot of people like me out there who like to use MHL adapters but don't want their battery to die.

Check the quality of the cord. If it's some cheapo one from like eBay or something that may be the problem.
I've found that some of my older degraded cords won't charge the phone while I'm using it.
Also if you roll/folded the cord up sometimes it can pinch it just right to not supply the right charging power.

To be clear it does show that it is charging (via USB) but its using more current than its getting thus end result is the drain.
It could very well be the cable - hence why I am asking if anyone can recommend a tried and tested solution of MHL + charge that actually charges it quickly.

So I have the stock charger, a rather generic charge cable, a generic hdmi cable, and an Insignia NS-PU378CHM Usb-c to three port HDMI /USB 3.0 /USB-C power
The problem: when I hook up hdmi and am running DeX on my TV, the battery drains. Even with external power connected.
So I measure the current the charger is delivering, and when using the hdmi adaptor, I'm getting about 1/2 an amp. When I plug power in directly to the tablet, I get a full amp. Battery drains faster than it charges when using the adapter.
I don't know if I need a better charger, to suuply more current under load, a better hdmi adapter / power adapter, a better power cable (but the fact the cable supplies twice the current when plugged in directly suggests it isn't the cable).
Does anyone have a combo they use that keeps power from draining when running dex on hdmi?
Or should I figure it is impossible to supply enough current to keep the battery charged at 100% when running hdmi / dex?

This thread is pretty old, but I'm finally looking at upgrading and have some questions about the Ugreen UCB C / USB 3.1 + HDMI Adaptor.

In the notes it says that
USB C PD fast charging is only for laptops but not for phones. Phones only support normal charging.
Do NOT recommend you charge phone through USB 3.0 port as USB port only can only offer max 1.5A current and will charge your phone slowly
So I'm trying to figure out, is this like a powered USB hub that needs a PD brick to power the hub and then the hub powers the tabled (with 1.5A max), and separately powers the HDMI adaptor, UCB 3.1 devices etc., or is this a power-pass through that powers the tablet (slow) and then the tablet powers the USB devices?
In other words, is there an advantage to buying a $20-30 PD wall brick to power this hub, which the tablet doesn't support, or am I as good as I'm going to get with the original Samsung Lightning charger that came with the tablet?

This one has two USB 3.0 ports, a USB C charger-in port, HDMI, and two card readers, one full size SD, one micro-sd.
Because all of the documentation specifies it uses power delivery type chargers, I was worried it would have problems with a Samsung lightning charger. No problems. With the original lightning charger, the tablet recharges to and holds at 100% even when loaded by hdmi, an external hard drive, a USB thumb drive, and a micro sd card. The simpler / cheaper hub I bought when I got the tablet discharges when hdmi + the same charger is plugged in.
The reviews complained it gets hot enough to burn your finger when touched, but I haven't noticed this at all. This could be a function of the total power delivered to the hub I believe the lightning charger is only 15W. The hub is rated at 100W with PD cgarger. So only a fraction of the power is transmitted through the hub when charging with Samsung lightning charger. It seems most of the 100W is used to charge a PD laptop or Apple device, not the peripherals.
The one change I'd make to it, is that I'd like to have a spring loaded recessed slot for the micro sd card reader. In this hub, it is pushed in / pulled out of the slot leaving ~ 1/4 inch sticking out from the body of the reader when the micro sd card is loaded. If you leave the card in all the time (to use as an external hard drive) there will be a danger of the card snapping. A minor quibble.
I'm happy that it allows the tablet to maintain 100% charge while running hdmi.

There is a suspicious remark in the documentation:

Your description is confusing to me, and I had to translate the product description of your adaptor from Dutch to English, but...
Plug the USB C male connector from the adaptor into your tablet. Your adaptor has three ports:
1) USB 3.0 female - connect to a USB device such as a mouse, keyboard, thumb drive, etc. I'm not sure if you can connect this port to a PC or not.
2) HDMI female - hook to a display
3) USB C female - power input port only. Does not carry data. Does not connect to a PC. Plug your power supply into this port using the same cable that you charge your tablet with.. The charging icon should activate. Your tablet should stay charged while using the other ports, or at least discharge more slowly.
It sounds like you are trying to plug the charging port into a PC. Doesn't work as far as I know.

1. Plug the USB-C cable from the adapter into the tablet C port.
2. Plug HDMI cable (connected to a monitor) into the adapter HDMI port. This is detected, Samsung Dex starts, and the monitor displays the Dex desktop.
3. Plug keyboard/mouse into the USB-A port of the adapter. This is picked up by the tablet and I can use the keyboard/mouse.
Alternatively, when I plug a USB stick into the USB-A port of the adapter, the tablet shows a new USB storage device.
So far, so good.
4. I connect the Samsung power supply to the USB-C port of the adapter. Nothing happens. The tablet does not start charging (or discharging less). I tried different power supplies and cables, makes no difference.
When I connect the power supply with the same cable to the tablet it charges normally. When I connect the tablet using this cable to a PC hub the tablet also start charging, albeit slowy.
So as far as I can see I did nothing wrong. What suprises me most is that almost everything works fine, except charging.
I've ordered a new adapter (different brand) to see if this makes a difference.
I think it should work... I have a couple adaptors similar to yours and they all work. Particularly Insignia NS-PU378CHM I referenced above.
I do think that adaptors that say they support power delivery (PD) work better than cheaper generic adaptors. Even though the Tab S4 doesn't support
PD itself. I strongly recommend the Ugreen adaptor above.

I would have bought the Ugreen immedeately if they were easily available in this part of the world. Buying from Amazon is expensive and delivery is slow.
I got myself another multiport hub, brand A-Konic, and this time all three ports seem to work correctly. USB-C charging. USB-A OTG and HDMI. However, Samsung Dex on the monitor is only 1280x720 (on the S4 it is 2560x1600; the monitor is 1920x1080). Not sure if this is related to the hub.
I'm glad you found something that works. I don't know about screen resolutions. There are other threads that discuss HDMI resolution. I think the HDMI cable can make a big difference.

Initially I got a distorted image on the screen but replacing the high quality cable by an even higher quality cable fixed that.
I'll check out the resolution info.

It will work but it won't use all its capacity. The tablet only can charge at 18w.

It will give screen mirroring to TV. I have used it on both a 720p and a UHD (2160x3840) TV.
It can charge through the hub and use HDMI out and ethernet on the S4. I just wish it wouldn't try to make me setup DEX everytime I plug it in.
