[Q] MHL adapter that charges XZU - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Is there a MHL adapter which charges the XZU? I have tried two different adapters so far and both will output to the HDMI monitor but will not charge my XZU. I am connecting the MHL adapter to an USB power charger which provides 2A. If not, I may go the route of buying a DK30 and taking it apart to use the magnetic charging.

Be aware that there are two types of MHL adapters. 11 pin and 5 pin. The Ultra supports 5 pin, and only Samsung devices supports 11 as far as I know. I have a cheap 5 pin from Ebay and it charges the Ultra when it's connected. That's the point of the whole "plug in your charger". That's only MHL 1.0 or 2.0 though, and I belive 3.0 which is pretty much all new this year supports direct plugging, and you won't need to plug a charger in to use it. That's either 2.0 or 3.0, I'm not sure. I belive the Z1 supports 2.0/3.0, but I'm not sure about the Ultra.
Yes, this is a messy post, but that happens when I'm trying to remember something I read once 6 months ago

Thanks LordManhattan. I know about the 5-pin and 11-pin compatibility. I believe the 11-pin MHL won't work at all on 5-pin devices (at least when I tried one that included the adapter). It's good to know the one you have will charge the XZU. Maybe I'm just having bad luck in choosing MHL adapters and getting ones that do not charge. For the two MHL adapters I tried, both needed the charger to display the picture on the monitor but, as mentioned, does not charge the phone itself. I also checked under settings and power management and the phone reports "discharging". Hopefully, third times a charm.

I have this 5pins MHL + 11pin convertor..
Mine is charging my ZU while playing movie on my plasma tv of course with a 2A charger too...
11pins doesnt display anything on my tv...

Yeah, the 11-pin adapter is for Samsung devices. I finally found one which outputs to HDMI and also charges my phone. Was the third MHL adapter I bought.

Not quite, the adapter requires power so you also need to plug a standard charger into it, plus you need an HDMI cable to go from the adapter to the TV. Frankly for now it's a more cumbersome solution than micro-HDMI as in the previous EVO (& Moto phones), since that was a 1 cable/adapter solution (unless you also wanted to charge the phone)...
In the future TVs will have MHL ports tho and you'll be able to output from phone to TV AND charge off the same MHL/USB-to-MHL/HDMI cable. For now tho, we have to live with the MHL to HDMI adapter with a charger plugged into it. Personally I think HTC & Samsung jumped the gun with this, by the time people have TVs that make MHL a better option than microHDMI we'll already be looking at the next generation of phones (if not the one after that).
P.S. I don't think it's necessary to bump three old threads on the same topic to get an answer to a question that has in fact already been answered on these boards. Just sayin'... Search button works.

That... Doesn't exist. The EVO 3D doesn't even have a microHDMI port, and standard HDMI of any kind doesn't transfer power (that's what MHL is for, to eventually allow a single cable power/video solution, duh).

The Evo 4G uses Micro HDMI. The Evo 3D uses MHL.
They are down to $14.02 on Monoprice now.
ONLY USB power
Is it just me - or using this monoprice adapter makes the phone charge in USB mode and not AC mode (50-90% reduction in charging current?).
I've tried several of my chargers that always report "AC charging" under settings, about phone, battery use (1000mA?)
but as soon as I plug in the monoprice MHL, it drops to "USB charging" (100mA - 500mA)?
I bought two of these Monoprice MHL adapters and both seem to do this. I've tried with four or five different micro-usb AC chargers and one DC cigarette lighter charger... all to the same result.
The result, for me, is that the phone charges at 1/10 the speed of normal - indeed depleting my battery even though it's plugged in to the charger (via the MHL adapter). Even turning my screen brightness all the way down and turning off all non-essential radios... still results in me not being able to watch a full movie before battery dies.
Is it just me or does MHL suck compared to the easy microHDMI of the evo4g?
Yeah it's kinda more cumbersome, eventually when TVs actually support MHL and we don't need these pass thru adapters then it'll be great as it'll be a single cable solution... It was implemented way too early on phones tho.

I can definitely confirm you're limited to USB power using the Monoprice adapter. BUT I'm definitely not losing battery power that fast. In fact, if I'm playing movies off the memory card - I'm still charging the phone. If I stream something while connected, my battery will drain - but nowhere near as bad as you're reporting.
I guess your ability to charge while playing from SD card is to be expected. Radios/streaming take a lot of power.
My normal use-case is 4G streaming netflix, hulu, youtube, hbo go via the MHL/HDMI to a pico projector. And it kills the battery REAL quick even with screen backlight to lowest, bluetooth and wifi off. I'll start experimenting with underclocking undervolting... to find the sweet spot of acceptable fps playback but little enough power to get under that threshold of charge from the adapter.
Anyone recommend a good program to see mA currently being used vs. mA drawn from charger?
Yeah, MHL seems like a great idea - except that not a single TV or device provides it. To me, seems a bad / annoying decision like providing USB5 in 2011... sure it's a cool technology - but isn't the point to be able to interface with EXISTING infrastructure? Annoying also that we NEED to plug in charger to use it.

No, it's mhl 2.0. They have using a Micro USB 5 Pin Female to 11 Pin Male Adapter. And your link doesn't show that it can work with Note 3.

Well if it were truly 2.0 it wouldn't need a power source other than the phone, and I assure you the one I recommended works with the note 3 considering I use it on a pretty regular basis.

The difference bewteen MHL 2.0 and 1.0 is not at the power source. Your recommendation also have a power port. It also need power supply.
Samsung 2.0 smart adapter does require external power and is able to work with HDMI TVs(from wiki ).
I ordered this one from Amazon seller Eastwest Accessories (seems legit; many sellers sell counterfeits):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080CXSOU/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The port is longer than typical microUSB and must be inserted further into the phone. It needed power to work for me and power needed to be connected to it before inserting into the phone.
I also ordered a Chrome Cast and I am considering ordering the AllShare Wireless Receiver from Samsung.com using the half-off code they send for registering my phone.

I am fully aware of differences, its not the only one, but is most certainly a distinctive practical difference. The one I recommended does not Need a power supply other than the phone (compatible ones such as the N3), but does have it there incase you want to charge the phone while using it. It provides 300mah when plugged in.

This is the way to go. The one in the OP looks like there's too many components needed for it to work. This one from Amazon does not need a power supply or an 11-pin adapter. Just plug and play. I just got mine a couple of days ago and it's perfect!

You mean you weren't able to charge simultaneously? Were you using the stock 2-amp Samsung charger?
No. I don't like using MHL and charging the phone at the same time. It can't be good to battery, with all the heat and heavily discharging while charging.
MHL 1.0 without charging (and lowest brightness):
- stock video player: 20 minutes, 6% drain
- youtube, nba app, coursera app with wi-fi on: 20 minutes, 8% drain
- MX player: 20 minutes, 10% drain
What I would like to know is if MHL 2.0 adaptor (without charging) drains less battery.

If the battery controller and ppwer management are smart enough it should switch to external power once the battery is charged. Heat will also drop because the battery is neither charging nor discharging.
I'd be more concerned with the extra cycling the battery is going through without charging. Obviously, they originally expected you to charge while outputting video, so I trust the engineers who would know better.
Anyway, what MHL1.0 dongles even work without charging? It seems you've been using one.
I'm using MHL adapter from Samsung (official accessory for S3) and it works. Only adapter + HDMI cable, no power, no USB cable required. but FPS are way worse. it's only good for watching movies and not playing games.
Ok how are you guys getting this to work? I've tried it with an MHL 2 adapter (for S3, S4, Note 2 and higher) and I get nothing. I had one of the expensive MHL1 adapters with the 5 to 11 pin adapter that "kinda" worked, but the adapter made it a flaky connection, so I returned and went to the MHL 2 - 11 Pin only to HDMI - nothing...zip, zero, nada. Have tried netflix, MX, etc.
Does screen mirroring or airplane mode need to be on or something?
Baffled
Should be plug n pray, but try mirroring if that is an option

Does Vic Tsing MHL converter work with Receivers?
For those who have the Vic Tsing MHL converter from Amazon has anyone tested plugging this into a Receiver HDMI/MHL port. I have the genuine Samsung and that only works if you plug it into a TV.
Also for the discussion about charging. If you are using MHL output and have a power adapter connected you are not charging your battery. All of the output from the charger is being used to power the phone and the converter. This means less drain on the battery and it should run cooler. The phone itself will draw the same current whether it's coming from the battery or the adapter so it will run as hot either way. From memory mine ends up draining about 1% every 15min using an adapter and the MHL 2.0 converter from Samsung.

Wait. So even the HDMI dock with USB hub that was supposed to turn the Note II into a desktop PC had less flexibility than a battery powered notebook?! At least a laptop can be plugged in to charge during use! If the docks do it but the MHL adapters don't, it sounds like a horribke tactic for selling more expensive docks.

MHL + USB HOST adapter

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FS9XLS6/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just got one of these, primarily for use with my Galaxy s4, but I tested it with the notepro 12.2 as well.
Works ok, but there are a few notes:
SD slot and USB slot are mutually exclusive; only one can be active at a time.
MHL will work at the same time the USB slot works. I tested with flash drives and a usb keyboard.
adapter doesn't seem to want to accept or pass on more than an amp. I have several chargers that I use, ranging from 500ma to 2.1a, and I initially thought that the problem with the USB/SD slot running at the same time was a matter of power. Turns out this isn't the case. The most I could get to pass through to the device was 700ma by suppliying 1000ma.
This does mean that you can power the device at the same time that you use the mhl output and the usb host, but with minimal amount of charging.
If you look at the adapter, you will see that the end that goes into the device is a micro-usb male adapter attached right to the bulky device. This is going to be a just for occasional usage only sort of thing, It is not very sturdy.
I suspected as much when I ordered it, but the other similar adapters with more sturdy configurations or pigtail cables plainly stated that they were mhl /or/ host mode not both at the same time.
I am on the lookout for a straight through 11-pin extension cable that will work. Any ideas?
I wish listed this thing as soon as I saw it!
I'm also looking for an 11 pin version of this same thing.
About the charging issue, if I were to run Netflix and charge at the same time, would it charge or just not drain as fast, also does the hdmi out handle audio?
Not exactly what I'm looking for but it's the closest thing I've seen yet!!!
I specifically tested running Netflix, July, and Dish anywhere access while outputting via HDMI. Depending on your charging rate from whatever cable youbare using for power, you should be OK, but probably it will charge a little slower. I have mine hooked up to a 1amp charger and it's registering +700ma pretty reliably. I've been using the phone as a thin client for the past few days outputting to HDMI and it's taken a charge OK.

HDMI adapter cable for pro 10.1

I bought this hdmi cable from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K61OB6C/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I hooked up the tab to the tv, cranked up netflix and nothing. I plugged in the power adapter and got a picture. So needs charger to plugged in to work. I wasn't real keen on the output, but was only testing for connectivity. Might come back and edit after I have chance to adjust settings.
Today, I plugged the cable into the second hdmi port on my tv and it does mirror the tab display. Good response time too.
The charger is necessary but it does not charge the Tab. Left it plugged in and battery was down to 38% before i noticed.

Probably not a hardware error. I'm on my 3rd dongle that's supposed to charge your tablet while using connected devices. The latest is this one: http://www.amazon.com/E-More%C2%AE-Multi-functional-Connection-Reader-Samsung/dp/B00K80C9CE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1403104007&sr=8-8&keywords=HDTV+HDMI+Adapter+Cable+USB+OTG+Card+Reader
Everything works except for charging the tablet. Have a red X on the charging symbol while the battery continues to drain. It does charge the tablet while it's off. I have a power hungry Tab Pro 12.2 that has trouble maintaining a charge while playing a couple games with the stock 2 amp charger. I'm beginning to think that none of the HDMI dongles out there are capable of delivering the current necessary to run the larger tablets.
Ah, I see. It's because not enough power through the micro usb. You need 2A but this adapter's only delivering 1A.
It seems, there a no adapters with 2A...
I have a ton of usb chargers gathered over the years. Largest i have is only 5.1 volts. Tab has a large output. Wonder if other devices could be damaged using it or is output regulated by draw of whatever it is attached to? At any rate, i don't think any of the dongles or otg cables have a power source other than what is supplied by the tabs adapter. So are you thinking it is an issue with the pin configuration on the adapter? It is a 11 pin connector. Sure wish there was 1 standard for everyone instead of everyone having their own.

It's not limitated by the pins, there are just for more or less possibilities for an interchange (at least a salesman told me that). It's limited by the inside electronical components. Maybe anybody out there to explain it better or correct my words?
If I remember correctly (it's been a couple years since I tested it), my S3 required the Samsung charger + Samsung wire hooked up to the HDMI (I have the Samsung HDMI adapter) to charge the device while mirroring the screen. I tried it with a more powerful power adapter (2.1 amps vs Samsung 1.x amps) and generic wire but the phone would lose power over time. I could even charge the phone while mirroring if I used a generic Samsung wall charger and Samsung cord that was listed as 0.8 amps.
I bought the official Samsung one a few weeks ago and it is working fine, it also charges the device while using it but you have to connect a charger to the MHL-HDMI adapter.
Sadly I recently flashed CM11 on my TabPRO 10.1 and now the adapter doesn't work anymore. I get picture but no sound Was so happy about getting CM11 official on my device, but this feature is something I can't live without so I'm going to have to hop back to stockbased
HDMI doesn´t work
Hi guys! I´ve bought this one adapter dhgate.com/product/1-1-mhl-11-pin-micro-usb-to-hdmi-cable-hdtv/163941539 I know is not the original one but doesnt work!!!! I did all the steps but nothing. Any idea?? I have installed the original ROM on my galaxy tab t520. I need help!!! Thanks
Hey everyone, so just reading all the comments regarding the HDMI adapter not charging your tab while it is plugged in with the charger, I have also had issues with it and also with my Note2 and the Samsung Smart Dock I use with it. But I did however manage to find the solution to why it would not charge while on the HDMI dock that is connected to my T.V. It seams that if you plug either the Smart Dock or even the HDMI connectors to the HDMI cable first then plug in the charger it will show its charging but will eventually lose charge while outputting an HDMI output, instead, you need to first plug in the charger cable into your HDMI adapter, then plug it into your phone or tablet and finally plug in the HDMI cable into the adapter, I have found this to be the way to keep my phone and tablet charging while also having the HDMI output connected to my T.V..
Hope this helps .

Quick Charge \ AFC to VOOC \ Dash \ Rapid adapter

I have a ton of Qualcomm quick chargers and I'm not feeling this Dash charge with its special cable restriction. I saw this adapter and from the reddit posts, it seems to work well. It even works with normal USB Type C cable. Does anyone have experience with it and the 6T?
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=SFC+AFC+VOOC+SCP&_sacat=0
I have some coming in the mail as we speak - I will let you know once I get them tested. There are supposedly some signaling differences between different OP versions, which may require a new adapter.
My take is that none of the WEB- adapters (on eBay) would work with the 6T, since that manufacturer is already selling a specialized adapter for OP beyond or equals to 5T. The WEB- adapters, however, offer a wider range of fast charge protocols as opposed to the YZXStudio adapter, which supports only VOOC-DASH. The YZXStudio adapter also has a current cap, which you can slightly adjust by soldering pins on the adapter itself. You are unlikely to get the full benefit of DASH from the YZXStudio adapter because of this cap, although your Quick Charge chargers most likely will be the limiting factor. Also note that the WEB- adapters require an input of at least 10 or so volts, so their A2A adapters will automatically request QC2/3 @ 12V. If your adapter does not support 12V, then it would not work properly. Your adapter should at least output 12V @ 1.5A for it to be any good after conversion losses.
This cable works although it seems to have gone out of stock.

I think the OP is trying to avoid using OP specific cables but rather use a QC2/3-DASH adapter and a normal USB-C cable for charging the phone. That said, aftermarket cables are not that expensive on AliExpress, eBay, or even Amazon. Although if you insist, I would encourage that you get heavier gauge USB cables for this...

Thank you for the information. Please let me know what you can find. I do have QC adapters that support 12V. If there're adapters that works, I rather buy those instead of investing in new bricks, cables, car chargers, battery packs,... My other devices either support QC or PD. Investing in Dash charger doesn't make any sense at all.

I hear you - I did buy a multifunction car charger that supports both QC3.0 and DASH - I will report whether that works when it comes (hopefully later in the week if not the following week). I have also gotten the specialized versions from WEB- in China so once I get those I will let you know.
So I got one of the adapters today - this is an older version that does DC to Type C, so I did not expect it to work (even though it specifically listed VOOC and DASH support - maybe it worked for an older OP version).
This one was from eBay, and supposedly the seller sent me the wrong item (WEB- makes a 12V and a 20V PD version - and instead of the 20V version they sent me the 12V version instead - which can only decrease voltage due to the builtin buck converter inside).
So the question is - does it work with DASH charging? --- No, it did not. However, it is still an interesting adapter because it has broad fast charge technology support. They market this little adapter to convert your "dumb" laptop charger into a "multifunctional charger."
Interesting facts:
1. This adapter requires 12V for it to function. It does start turning on at around 11V or so, and anything below that will cause the output to shut off and the operation light to go red. The USB to USB version automatically requests QC @ 12V, but obviously, this cannot be done on a DC jack (on this particular version).
2. As soon as the voltage going in exceeds 11.5V, the output turns on with a steady blue status indication.
3. The USB-C version of this adapter supports USB-C Power Delivery (PD2.0) with three selectable voltages 5.00V @ 3.03A, 9.00V @ 2.39A, 12.00V @ 2.31A (there is a 20V version that supposedly does 15 and 20V as well for laptops, but the seller sent me the wrong version).
4. The input side is a 5.5 x 2.5 DC jack, which is somewhat odd as an input because most input jacks use the smaller 5.5 x 2.1 jack (you can use an adapter on it, however).
5. You can see from the tester that this adapter supports pretty much everything, except VOOC/DASH and 20V QC and AFC 12V.
6. QC 2.0 9V engages just fine to charge my older Nexus 6 via a USB-C to USB-A adapter (since the D+/D- lines are intact).
I do have more adapters coming in soon so I will let you know how they go once they come in (including the WEB- VOOC/DASH specialized USB-USB adapter). This particular version may be a fun adapter to play with, although it won't really help with DASH charging on the OnePlus.

I have a ton of Qualcomm quick chargers and I'm not feeling this Dash charge with its special cable restriction. I saw this adapter and from the reddit posts, it seems to work well. It even works with normal USB Type C cable. Does anyone have experience with it and the 6T?

The seller is resending me the 20V version - will let you know how that goes
Just using anker usb3.0 cables i had from a previous phone. Dont really need to dash charge, this phone seems fast enough.

Here's an update on the car adapter I have received. Note that the other adapters are still on the slow boat so I will get to them when they arrive. This isn't necessarily what you are after, but nonetheless, it's another interesting toy. If you are interested, it can be found on AliExpress under item number 32916499372.
This is a car charger that accepts 12-24V input, and also supposedly supports multiple fast charging technologies (DASH, VOOC, QC, etc). It comes with an "original" (questionable - but capable of 3.5A charge) DASH cable which is not bad at all for about $13.
Interesting facts:
1) The car charger comes with dual USB ports. One "quick charge" port and one "standard" port. The quick charge port lights up red on one side and the blue indicates the normal charge port. Some may like that it lights up, but my thought is that it's a waste of energy.
2) The Quick Charge port supports all available quick charge methods (the VOOC-DASH section don't light up probably because it doesn't use the same protocol for unblocking DASH charging that the original charger requires).
3) The charger does not require an ID chip on the USB-C cable (unlike the stock charger), which means you can use any USB-A to USB-C cable on the market to activate DASH charging (as long as the D+/D- pins are not shorted out). This car charger doesn't even have the odd PIN in the back of the USB connector for the ID communication.
4) The car charger is not as fast as the stock wall charger, which charges around 3.5A. Here are the test comparisons (allow some current variances due to battery percentage ~70-72% - note all of them had the lightning bolt on the charging indicator which indicated that DASH was indeed activated with none of these cables having D+/D- shorted):
a) Normal, 1 ft USB-A to C Cable: 2.46A
b) Bundled DASH cable, w/ car charger: 2.73A
c) Bundled DASH cable, w/ stock wall charger: 3.5A
d) Normal, 3 ft (Rankie) USB C Cable: 2.56A
e) Normal, 3 ft MicroUSB w/ USB-C Adapter (ANKER): 1.95A
f) Normal, 3 ft multi (MicroUSB + Type C) free conference charging cable: 1.32A (this one did not "pass" the fast charging test because the current is below 1.5A but nonetheless it triggered DASH charging).
Not a big difference if you use quality cables, although don't expect it to charge as fast as the wall charger - nonetheless, it is still doing pretty well with less heat generated due to lesser current.
5) As mentioned previously, the charger supports multiple charging technologies besides DASH, where it activated QC 2.0 9V on my Nexus 6 just fine.
6) Since this adapter allows 12-24V DC input, you can use a DC to lighter adapter to power this device (as you can see in my screenshots I used a laptop battery pack and a 12V router wall brick and it was able to turn on and charge my devices just fine.) This may also be a good way to have a longer reach charging solution since DASH is very cable sensitive and it is best to keep the cable length short to minimize the reduction in charging currents.
Here's a test of the 100 cm noodle cable on AliExpress (item 32806193071):
Using the stock wall charger, charging the phone @ ~50%:
The genuine OnePlus cable was able to charge at 3.657A @ 4.69V (17.15W).
The noodle cable on AliExpress was able to charge at 3.617A @ 4.81V (17.4W).
Based on the results, it seemed like the quality was as good as the genuine cable, at least the copper that is carrying the power to the phone.
Here are the test results of the final adapter I received from WEB- (the specialized VOOC-DASH version - Taobao Item #560336325713):
Stuff to note:
1) This adapter is very similar to the car adapter, in which it supports pretty much all quick charge technologies and it does not require the OnePlus ID chip to activate DASH charging. However, this adapter is QC activated and has a USB-A input interface. Like the car charger, this charger is also not as fast as the stock wall brick, although it is still relatively quick.)
2) The USB pinout schematic also looks the same as the car charger (USB 2.0 with no dangling USB 3.0 pin in the back for ID chip identification).
3) Like the other 12V based WEB- adapters, this one uses the IP6518C chipset, which supports a wide voltage input (10.5V - 32V - from the chipset datasheet).
4) The board looks fairly similar to the USB-C board, except this one has a USB-A input (which is interesting because the board has the DC 12V-24V marking on it still).
5) The board also has the POW and OK lights similar to the USB-C version.
6) Since the board accepts broad input voltages, it is not required to use QC for the input voltage. A USB-A to 5.5 x 2.1 adapter could be used to also provide the DC input, as long as the voltage is above 10.5V.
7) Although the board indeed supports down stepping a 20V DC input, it seems like it is a bit less efficient in doing so than a 12V input.
8) Similar to the previous cable tests, the quality and the length of the cable really makes a difference. The shorter and the better quality cable that is used, the better the charging rate (remember that an official cable does not need to be used for third-party chargers).
9) As mentioned previously, this charger supports other fast charging technologies, like QC2.0 - which works fine in charging my Nexus 6 at 9V.
10) This charger / adapter essentially allows any 12V @ 1.5A output to be a multifunction fast charger w/ DASH support. In my example, I used a Xiaomi router wall brick (12 V @ 1.5A DC) and it charges my phone using DASH at almost 3A output using a short 1ft USB-C cable! (the phone registers the current slightly lower at around 2750mA).
Great info, @chowfun. I was able to purchase 2 OPPO wall chargers from Asia and a 3rd party VOOC car charger which work great.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78182174&postcount=24
I also got the same oneplus flat cable but 150cm length. It works good with no notable slow down.
From your findings, it looks like the WEB- adapter charge slower but that's still plenty fast and much more convenience. :good: Does it generate a lot of heat when charging a low battery?
Nice keyboard, I like it. ?
That said, the Quick9 charger you bought probably does not require the ID chip as far as DASH is concerned. I didn't get that one because it had a lower current rating and that the top of the charger is wider than the other one I bought. I doubt the OPPO charger would work with a regular microUSB cable since I presume that it also requires the chip on the cable end... Did you also see what kind of maximum currents you are seeing on those chargers?
Heat wise, it does generate a bit of heat with the conversion. But given that the adapter is housed in an aluminum case it's to be expected. It feels just slightly warm to the touch, but not exactly hot to the touch. Instead of that conversion being done in the phone it's just being done outside the phone which is directing the heat away from the battery...

LOL. My wife doesn't like those RGB lights. lol
The input and output of the OPPO charger look exactly the same as the 1+ charger. It's pretty much identical except for the cosmetic (logo, prints, the USB A female is green). They're selling for $4.
