[Q] Resale value with Knox tripped? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I'm guessing not many people that have tripped Knox are selling their phones yet, but is there any data about any difference in resale price with Knox tripped? I don't see any ads that even mention it on eBay or Swappa, although eBay has a bunch for sale with bad ESNs that are asking about the same prices as clean ones.
With all of the new ROMs coming out, I've about decided to bite the bullet and trip the Knox counter. I'll probably jump to the Note 4 when it's released, but I don't want to lose my shirt when I sell my Note 3 either.

The note 3s on eBay with cm11 are selling for about the same price. Don't know if the buyers know about Knox's?

Thanks, I hadn't thought about looking at CM phones for sale. Can we assume that if someone is knowledgeable enough to want a rooted Note 3, they're knowledgeable enough to know that it trips the Knox counter too? Is there a moral factor to let a buyer know about it?

That is the question.. is there a moral factor in letting someone know. .. i think if someone wants a rooted phone than they should know If knox 8 a important to them they should ask. .
The problem arises with people who don't know. Does knox being tripped effect the normal use of the phone? It most certainly does if you need knox security. If someone buys a note 3 they have every right to expect it to operate as if brand new which would mean knox security.
But most people buying probably do not need it. Unfortunately Those People Would Most likely be not knowledgeable about it and if you put knox tripped in the information they might not buy even though it wouldn't effect them.
I finally broke down and tripped knox and if this issue is not resolved (by swappa
Or ebay saying one must say your knox status I would feel guilty if I did not state it in my description.

I buy all my phones off eBay, I know I am not getting a manufactures warranty. Between not buying new and not signing a cell phone contract I've saved. BUYER BEWARE. It's eBay !!!

Kind of along the lines of this question, how does Sprint feel if you're on the yearly upgrade plan? Since we would have to turn this phone in to upgrade, would they take it even if Knox is tripped?

Knox question I have not seen asked

I have seen tons of Knox related content, but I do have a question that I have not seen asked before. We know that tripping the knox flag will void your warranty and you will take a boat load of crap if you try to have it serviced, but what about when the year is up and you try to give it back to Sprint to get a new phone on the One Up plan? Will they still take it back with that flag tripped? Thanks.

I don't think it will be an issue when you are at the store as all they are really looking at is does the phone work. Most reps would have no clue how to even get in to download mode to check it anyway. I plan on doing the one up again when the Note 4 comes out next year and am worried that where ever the phones go after they leave the store will catch it. What happens then? Will they come back and say that I owe the balance on the N3? Guess we will have to wait and see.
The last three phones I have sold back to Sprint have been rooted and they never said anything. This is different though, so it does worry me. I don't mind not having a Samsung warranty, but not being able to trade it in in a year is quite offputting and defeats the One Up program. Hopefully, someone can provide some definitive information...i'd rather not ask at the Sprint store. lol

My local store knows I had my Note 2 rooted. I even helped 2 of the employees root theirs lol. When I went in to do the one up one did ask me if I put it back to stock which I had. He did not check. Just made sure no physical damage and that it turned on. I have a feeling we will not know exactly how this will be handled untill a year from now. Because of this I am still debating on rooting or not.
Unless it has changed, check the link in my signature. Sprint allows rooting, you just have ignorant people that don't even knows the policies of the company they work for.

I get that they don't care about rooting, but no Sprint phone has ever had a situation like this. This explicitly voids the warranty on the phone and there is no way for sprint to resolve that by simply putting stock firmware/rom back on the phone. I am just curious how this will be handled when returning the phone on the One Up program. If one is not on this program, it wont matter because they will have it for 20-24 months, unless they buy a new one out of pocket. Presumably, the warranty would be expired on the phone anyway. I don't think there's any point in calling a Sprint store and asking this question now because I'm am all but certain that they will not know how to answer it accurately.
Generally after a year there is no warranty anyway. So how could they deny you over a voided warranty when you can only us one up once a year? Just wait an extra day after the year.

Most of the store employees don't even know how to check this kind of stuff. When I exchanged my htc one for the Note 3 they didn't even open the box and check the phone. If you have the TEP and have a hardware issue just take it in and get an exchange. If you expect Sprint employees to know how to get into Download/ODIN mode, your giving a little to much credit lol.

I have seen quite a few people say that in regards to Sprint store employees, but again, this is a special case. I would guess that they will be taught how to check it. Why even put that flag in there if it means nothing? I saw a thread here the other day where someone had to take a Note 3 back, for whatever reason, and they checked it. One would hope that they would remain clueless, but I don't think that is going to be the case. I am on the verge of rooting anyway, just trying to consider everything before I do.

On the One Up plan, you aren't buying the phone, but simply leasing it. Unless you decide to keep the phone for the whole 24 months, then you own it. So there's the problem if they won't take it back due to Knox flag being tripped. You are then stuck with it for the full 24 months and it defeats the purpose of paying extra for the One Up plan.
I have never purchased a used phone from Sprint. Do you get any kind of warranty with a used phone? If so, is it in any way a manufacturers warranty or simply a Sprint warranty? I guess if it's only Sprint, they would have to decide to warrant a phone that the manufacturer wont warrant.
I don't mean to belabor the point, but it seems as though I am the only one with this concern.

I am personally not worried about it, like I said 99% of the store employees are clueless anyways and half the time don't even boot the damn phone. I understand where you are coming from but I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Besides does it say anything in the One Up contract about rooting a device? No.

Does Bestbuy/Protection plan care/know about knox?

I got my note 3 at best buy and am using their insurance protection plan. Do they know or care about if knox is tripped?

If you broke the phone and are getting a replacement then just break it where it won't turn on. I shorted out my OG EVO before the return. The BB employees probably won't check, if one does then do as suggested and bring it to a different employee afterward.

Yeah, I was just curious. I got the gear and bought the protection plan for it as well, mainly because the employee selling it pretty much said if the watch "breaks" within 2 years they just give you a gift card for the original value. And the way he said it was pretty clear that he was telling me to break the watch in 2 years lol.

I have a Note 3 I am willing to donate to Outler.

As the title stated I have a Note 3 that I "can" donate to Adam. Please in response to this thread do NOT make mention of $ donations, pay-pal, or your favorite pets piggy bank. Kush of any kind, side shooters and hashish are also not to be mentioned. With that being said I would like to donate (for a good cause) my Verizon Galaxy Note 3 to Outler. Also this phone is my daily driver but I have a galaxy note 2 that I could be using if it were no longer broken. It needs the complete screen assembly. So if someone happened to have extra parts laying around or knew of extremely cheap parts for sale, I could fix my note 2 and ship out my note 3 to a cool guy that does cool stuff with hardware on awesome phones. I live in the Dallas area.
I re read the XDA rules and this post does not appear to violate any of them, but I also understand that interpretation is 93% of any rule/law. I am however not asking for donations for any reason and I am NOT asking for money at all. Thank you and good day.

Not sure what's wrong with your note 2, but if its the digitizer sensor board ~$14
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Digitiz...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3cd73f961d
or the lens ~$13
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Touch-S...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item4174b88d2b
If its the LCD, then those are running like $140+
From your post sounds like all 3, but figured i'd drop those for reference.
Yeah it needs all three parts. :crying: thought it would be worth a shot though.

While I do thank you for the kindness and gesture, I am able to get in touch with him. I may have to wait a week or two until I can get parts for my note 2, but the moment my note 2 is operational I will FedEx the Note 3 overnight to him. The note 3 was free to me so I'm not at a loss in re-gifting it. I will upgrade my other line in due time to another 3 when and if the boot loader is unlocked or a custom recovery/kernel is flashable.
Like I said before, if you have a Note 2 laying around or parts to fix mine, I am not against paying for the parts but I don't have much money..... (3 kids @ Baylor are keeping me at the poverty line) literally.
Correct me if im wrong but don't ERD's get devices to develop for anyways?

I don't think I have posted that before...
I think people should start considering their intentions before purchasing a model, if they want unlocked they need to support the dev versions. It is showing the carriers which products are wanted. If they see a larger number of dev units on their network, they are more likely to give them greater support.

Some people can't pay the 700 and something deductible. And the only way they probable could is buy the note 3 and keep it in the box then to and it on swappa. Then wait until it to get sold, then purchase it from sammy. And 9/10 times it's out of stock.

I totally agree with this; however, I was in the situation where I purchased the retail version before I knew there was going to be a dev version. Unfortunately I was too sick of my older slower phone and I purchased the Note 3 right away. Maybe someone mentioned the dev phone prior to the release or maybe that's a trend, but I unfortunately did not read it or did not know to expect it. From now on I will not buy a device unless it is a dev model. That doesn't help my current situation, so I thank anyone spending time on solving this one. I know it might not ever be solved, but efforts towards that end are appreciated. Thank you @drag&fly for being willing to contribute to the cause.

Carriers? Besides Play Edition devices, the only carrier offering development devices is Verizon, and even then, they don't offer them. Motorola and Samsung are attempting to band-aid our market share they don't want to lose to another manufacturer like HTC or Sony. With the exception of AT&T and VZW, everyone else has the freedom to do as they please. I strongly disagree, as a couple thousand developer devices vs. millions of retail devices, they don't care one bit. This whole 'Dev Device' business model is Samsung's attempt at a band-aid Verizon's position on device modification. They should start differentiating corporate devices vs. consumer devices. Verizon caters heavily to the enterprise market, especially government organizations and large corporations, so the need for enterprise security created the bastard child known as Samsung Knox and LG Gate. RIM's fall from it's Blackberry throne really stung. Samsung wanted a piece of the pie. If we want to do something about it, switch carriers, not devices. Leave Verizon and AT&T en masse. I mean Verizon charges for 2GB of data instead of unlimited (was same price for me) because they insist this is what consumers wanted. What a joke. T-Mobile now offers international data for free off your data plan, in addition to acquiring the lower 700Mhz block, which will only help them even more with greater signal penetration (something they were struggling with outside of urban/suburban environments.) It's also not very realistic for people in the United States to adopt to the lower tariff/higher device cost model like Europe has. They've engrained subsidization deeply into the mobile industry, although some are starting to shake loose. Motorola is helping quite a bit. It's a complex issue, but truly Verizon is the enemy, and we should all abandon ship. Oh, and AT&T sucks too.

The perks of GSM... but you are right, I suppose if you aren't locked in a CDMA market, that's most certainly an option.

As @AdamOutler once said
Why not just buy a developer edition?
GTFO! Not a single person got started developing by buying a developer phone. They started developing because they were unhappy with the features of their device and wanted something better. They wanted something more. This developer phone is a tax on developer innovation. We do not stand for that. We will break the security and we will enable XDA-Developers to do what they do best.
Until security is broken and available for everyone, this device will get updates last, users will be unhappy because there are no additional features and Samsung violates the spirit of Open Source and copyright laws. Take a look at the bottom line of GPL-Violations.org FAQ located here: http://gpl-violations.org/faq/sourcecode-faq.html

By the way, what happened I thought Adam was ERD. Look here http://www.xda-developers.com/xda-t...stion-and-answer-session-qa-xda-developer-tv/
Plus AT&T doesn't have Dev edition of N3 and even if it did college student like me wont be able to afford something that was priced outrageously. Personally I think carrier should let customers choose between Regular phone or Dev phone and if you choose dev phone and brick it, then its your responsibility.

T-Mobile Insurance/JUMP & Warranties

Does Knox affect coverage? I mean all the things i hear around the forums is for warranty.(What warranty are they speaking of?) Quite honestly I don't even know what the general warranty is for mobile devices as I've always taken care of mines. No cracks or broken from drops... ect.. It kinda sounds like Warranty and Insurance through T-mobile (Assurance) is separate. Currently have insurance since JUMP comes with it.
Anyway, I was wondering if there's anyone who could give a detailed explanation to this. Also regarding on how knox affects either both or one of the above mentioned in regards to claims. I don't think Assurance would care if it was.
My guess is that JUMP (and insurance for that matter) should not be affected. I'm planning to turn mine in 12 months from now, at which point the JUMP program will cover the other 50%. At that time, the warranty will be void (via expiration) anyway, so I can hardly see that as being a valid point.
I wouldn't take my word for it, however. Large companies tend to take every step possible to make sure that they aren't spending any extra money they don't have to.
Assurance and JUMP phones won't be affected by Knox. Plenty of people have turned in phones that were triggered with Knox, both in store at T-Mobile and mailed back for replacement through Assurance. Until employees get trained on detecting Knox and start denying those phones, we won't have to worry for now.

Bought a "New" Galaxy S6 From Expedite Electronics, Already Rooted And Battery Overheats

Been sold a dodgy s6? Expedite Electronics
Hi guys,
Yesterday I recived a S6 from Expedite Electronics. It is suppose to be new. It looked new but I noticed it had SuperSU installed.... Its been rooted. Also I was only downloading a couple of apps whilst browsing and the phone got red hot. The battery was also draining at a phenomenal rate.
How do I take it completely back to stock? I unistalled supersu and tried a factory reset, that took me to a black screen which amougst other things said 'dm-verity verification failed'. What does this mean? Have I been sold a dodgy phone?
I would like to keep the phone but I just want it not to burn my hand off and the battery to last more than 2 hours.
I'm not bothered about having it rooted. I dabbled with it on my old phone but never really grasped what it was all about.
Sounds like you got a returned one that's not been checked I would contact the store and get it replaced
Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
Yeah definitely got a used one that someone returned. Good luck getting a replacement though as they'll probably not believe that you received it rooted ..

I'm not bothered about keeping it if I could revert it to stock. Cos I cba with the hassel of returns.

Is there anything you can point me in the direction of that will educate me on it?

This thread here tells you everything you need to know.
Hope this works for you.
Check the Knox status too. If it's 0x0 then all good.

It reads KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 1 (0X0500)
What does that mean?

It means if you try to get a warranty replacement, you are out of luck.
Every smartphone comes with a 1 year warranty, but root voids the warranty.
On Samsung phones KNOX is a piece of software baked into the bootloader.
When KNOX reads 0x0 your warranty remains intact;
if it read 0x1, or anything else, your warranty is void; It is much harder to replace
Send it back. As its been rooted the knox has been triggered which might void warranty and samsung pay wont work when its launched, u paid for a brand new phone.

I'd better get it sent back then, this is supposed to be a Brand New phone. Obviously not.
Just so people know. This phone was from online company Expedite Electronics. To be fair, they are cheap...... but this is probably the reason why!

When you send it back, do not tell them it is rooted.
Tell them it was not in the condition you were told it would be in.
This is one reason why I may never buy a smartphone online.
When I buy one in person, I can closely inspect it before handing over the cash.

Ah, too late :/
I have already lodged a complain. Telling them it has arrived with SuperSU installed, which raised my suspicion, then I found out it was rooted and knox had been tripped.
Have I dropped a bollack there!
This is not of my making, I hope Paypal backs me up on this one. I did lodge a complaint within 24 hours of receiving the phone.
You should be ok. Paypal usually always go in favour of the buyer. Im in the UK and theyve been really good with me, never had a problem.
UPDATE: I returned the phone about 2 week ago now. I cannot get in touch with Expedite Electronics so I opened a case with Paypal. For reasons I cannot fathom, Paypal sided with expedite even though I provided all the information they asked for and Expedite did not even respond!
It looks like I'm £450 out of pocket. Gutted isn't the word.
Just writing this so hopefully people Googling them will find it and maybe it will stop other people from dealing with this horrible company.
It sounds like you were very unlucky. I also bought my S6 Edge from Expedite Electronics for £388 (32MB) and it was in a sealed Samsung box and was definitely brand new.
Sounds like a job for the small claims court

So they have your money and your phone now? Id class that as theft then, im surprised PayPal didnt go in your favour. I bought a S6 Edge off a seller on Ebay the guy didnt pay hes contract bill with 02 so the phone was blocked, id gone past the 45 days protection with Paypal, Ebay didnt give a damn. Paypal surprisingly helped me out and i got a refund after sending phone back tracked which PayPal had requested.
Im really sorry they weren't as helpful with you. Did Paypal request that you send the phone back to the seller? Because usually they would only request that if they sided with you.
Yes they requested I send it back. I sent it back. I sent it Royal Mail Special Delivery. I then uploaded the tracking number and receipt. A couple of days later they settled in the sellers favour because 'my return evidence was unacceptable' .
I've absolutely no idea what they are talking about. They have yet to replied to my email. I'm going to phone them.
But Expedite did actually reply to me today after a week of no communication. They said they have been having email problems and are looking into my refund.
Fingers crossed!
