I am thinking about giving up the Samsung world for the M8. But I want to know if I root and unlock the bootloader will ATT know if I decide to return? In the Samsung world if you trip Knox att won't take it back.

So I am a little HTC stupid. Does this just remove the text?
I sure wish the HTC had wireless charging that is the one BIG thing I will miss.
I came from the S3 so I feel your growing pains. Yes it removes the red text that appears on your unlocked bootscreen but if you scroll down to FAUX LOCKED HBOOT you can make it look like its S-ON and locked. This will make your phone look like it's unmodified. I had to return mine because my screen was unresponsive. They didn't even have me turn it on, they just exchanged it without question.

Faux hboot would work with at&t but not if your sending it to HTC. You can put everything back to stock except s-on. There is a command, but I don't think anyone has the balls to try it including me but you can lock the boot loader without it saying relocked as long as you are soff. just remember DONT use faux hboot and relock boot loader.

I want to know why does it happened to some Tabs that they have unlock padlock icon on the boot screen. Does it mean the tab was sold to someone and he unlocked it and returned the tab where is bought from and samsung repacked and ship it back to store? Or is it a I/O version and they just changed the back casing? I have unlock padlock icon and i am curios is it a returned item and samsung repacked it?

they are being sold with unlocked bootloaders, or alteast some are. the ones form the 8th in nyc were all locked where these are what I am seeing mostly all unlocked
Yep, Just got one from Best Buy last week and its got the unlocked padlock when it boots.
Bought one a week ago from amazon that was locked. It sucked and was broken anyway so they replaced it. Now I got a unlocked one that's works hreat so far. I must say though. Even after 1.4ghz overclock my evo still scrolls smoother lol. Both devices seem laggy as hell
"hold on to your dookie, its about to get spooky"
Best buy units all seem unlocked.

Yes it is... Mine was locked too from bestbuy.
I have 2 16GB one white, the other grey both bought at Best Buys (two different Best Buys) both locked.
Personally, if you're within your return period, I'd return the unit as defective.
If people who are paying the same price as you from the same vendor and getting an unlocked device, you should be too. A locked bootloader should be considered a defect when quite a few units from the exact same retailer are unlocked.
But for real, where's the disadvantages about a locked bootloader if you're able to install CWM recovery? - You can install a new kernen/rom, so everything is fine with a locked device. I just don't get it.

More likely to accidentally brick for one.
And it's also "speaking with your wallet" - If you just lie down and take it, Samsung will be more likely to lock bootloaders in future devices.
I'd like to see that conversation take place...
"I'm returning this. It's defective."
"Oh, I'm sorry. What is wrong with it?"
"The bootloader is locked. I want one with an unlocked bootloader."
"The what? I don't know what that means... Let me get my manager"
my rezound is unlocke and rooted. my ear piece speaker make really bad cracking noise. if i unroot the phone, can i have warranty replacement? or will there be a problem?
Well
No one has an answer to this. You will not know you have a problem until months and months. If months from now you get a charge for a unit, because you voided the warranty and then sent it in for warranty exchange, only then will you know.
There just simply hasn't been enough time since HTC released the unlock, people unlocked (I still have NOT for this very reason), and then people started trying to turn in unlocked phones to Verizon.
if u can use asurion u would be fine... they take them back no matter if they are unlocked or not
oh.. well...
if u have no other choice i say re-lock and try it
even when you re lock it, it says that it is relocked, thus showing that it was once rooted, so it helps but it isn't 100%, I would just put the stock RUU on the phone, so stock ROM, recovery, and then re-lock bootloader as suggested and give it a try.
I think you will be ok, but dont take my word.

+1 this should work unless they really check for it and know to lock for it saying unlocked
Call tech support and profit. I've gotten two replacements which are worse than the original... But I got them none the less! Both are going back to Verizon lololol.
I have seen many people say unlocking voids the warranty, but they are all lying. On HTC DEV it says unlocking MAY void you warranty. I think if the device is re-locked and has the stock ROM installed there shouldn't be any issues.
FWIW, and don't take it as 100%, I know a guy in the warranty department that told me as long as it can be flashed to stock when they hook it up and it works, they don't care about root or unlocking. People have even received phones already unlocked.

I'd bet that's it. At least for a physical defect. Unless HTC decides to go evil. But I doubt it.
So far I'm liking my HOX+ (AT&T), but want to unlock/root to get the full experience, backup with Titanium, delve into Tasker and BatteryXL, etc. However, I'm a relative newbie at this and need some help.
I understand you have to unlock the bootloader first, but so far the only way I've seen is through HTC Dev. Is that correct? And will that void my warranty? Or is it reversible in case I need to bring the phone back in for maintenance?
Or, will it not matter, because if I bring it in the AT&T Store staff won't bother to check? I did swap out my phone for a non-defective one on Tuesday and the dude didn't even turn it on or glance at it, just grabbed me a new one with a new SIM, so this may not matter. But before I go on I just wanted some reassurance that I can reverse this if need be.
Thanks in advance!
Technically, yes it does void your warranty. That said, I bought a One X in September, unlocked the bootloader and rooted it in October. Then when the X+ came out, I relocked the bootloader and flashed the RUU to return the device to stock, took it back to the AT&T store and got my X+.
If for some reason you ran into a super-anal AT&T employee, yes they could still check to see if it had been previously unlocked and the phone would show this evidence if they look at the bootloader. Highly, HIGHLY unlikely if you ask me though.
Thanks!
I'll look into rooting if I can figure out how! Anyone know how to do this on Mac?

Exactly how you get around it! To be honest a few times i returned phones with only flashing the factory rom, left the phone unlocked and all, lol! I doubt the companies really look into it to see if you messed with it. Haven't heard 1 person returned a phone and getting denied because of root, unlocked bootloader, etc. I could be wrong but never heard of it myself...

Rooting and unlocking alone only voids your warranty if you have a custom rom on your phone that caused the issue you had that broke it. I got that straight from a store managers mouth.

As we all know, this beast is about to hit the streets Friday, but said beast is going to be locked by AT&T.
How hard/easy will it be to SuperCID & unlock the bootloader?
If the bootloader is unlocked will I be able to flash ROMs,Kernels,Radios, or is S-off needed?
I had heard it was unlockable on HTCdev still, has this changed?
http://phandroid.com/2013/04/15/htc-one-bootloader/
they may of course change it, sigh.

Here's hoping they don't have it done by the 19th when I get mine =*/
On a side note can anyone help me with a source on this? All I can find is that engadget article that doesn't list any sources for it.
>no but we asked ATT they said kk?
Not that I don't believe them, but an official statement from either company would be nice.

Or it's a ploy by HTC to temporarily drive sales of their developer edition, for which I'm sure they make more on per unit than they do with AT&T.

i'd be interested to know if you can re-lock the bootloader without it displaying "TAMPERED" at the top of FASTBOOT screen. you know, just in case i unlock on 4/18 but want to relock on Friday, 4/19 to get a Black one if available.
When you relock the boot loader its going to say relocked. I've never had someone at the store boot to the boot loader to look at it when doing a return

if s-off is archived we will be able to. Until then we have to live with it. Most likely they wont check.
Never had a store salesperson boot to bootloader mode in the store, but there's always a first time.

Anyone know how I can get the phone into a condition that t-mobile would take back for a return? While I really like the phone, tmobile's network is not working for me at work. I am barely get 1mbps at work when I was getting 15 mpbs on Verizon.
At this point all you can do is install non-rooted stock ROM and stock recovery. It will still say tampered in the bootloader assuming they check (highly unlikely). If you search you'll find both of those.
I know on the One S, once we got s off would could make the phone look like it was never unlocked. (Changing tampered and replacing 'unlocked' with locked)
It looks like s-off will be released pretty soon for the One, if what he said doesn't work just wait.
