I would think the one that doesn't increase your counter? Da_G's root method increases counter.
There are 3 ways
System root
Rom root
Kernel root
I belive the system root is is the only one that doesn't increase your counter so the only way undetected by AT&T or Samsung for any warranty work.
Is there a way to erase the counter?
Not at this time
So have the majority used the system root?

doesnt add to the counter and doesnt affect the stock rom, just gives root. Great so far

Ok I'll give you the short short version:
If you need the samsung drivers so your pc recognizes your note, download them here:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I717ZBAATT
If you need odin, download it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=581913&d=1304094576
Download this and when finished unzip it and will become a tar file. If this doesnt work find another host link in the system thread I posted earlier.
ftp://www.slimeinside.me/Samsung/AT&T Galaxy Note/Root/att_note_root.zip
1. Put your device in download mode by powering off, after its off hold the volume down botton and power on and hold at the same time until the download screen comes up and then volume up.
2. Connect your note via usb.
3. Run odin
4. Click the PDA button and locate your tar file.
5. Click start and let the magic happen, it should reboot once finished.

I did it this way to a T and it worked perfect. Only took like 20 seconds and then rebooted. Fastest root process I've seen AND it changes the boot animation which is bad ass cuz I hate the att one. Another thing that was different is that it asked me to dl super user. Other methods just automatically install it during the root process. Nice work. Thanks.

TUTORIAL FOR UPDATEING P500 to GB(baseband update), ROOT THE PHONE, FLASH CWM RECOVERY
I made this tutorial because i took me 4 h of intensive searching for the methods above ,and i hate to search for this kind of things and im sure that im not the only one , with this thread i will redirect you to the topics that you will need to follow, or i will explain to you what to do.
FIRST: Install the USB drivers from http://www.lg.com/us/support/mobile-support download PC Sync, we need the app for the latest USB drivers, or download the USB drivers alone.
Then go in your mobile, in Settings/Applications/Development and enable USB Debugging then go back under Applications Settings make sure that you got checked Unknown Sources
NOTE: I`M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MY BUILD MAY CAUSE TO YOUR DEVICE, TRY IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!
NOR ME OR OTHER DEVELOPER CAN NOT BE NAMED AS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MALFUNCTION/S THAT MAY OCCUR.And also that i dont have a P500 i have a Galaxy Mini and i build just for tass brunch
You are a noob? you dont know really where to start? ###DONT PANIC###!!!! first step is to check if you got android 2.3.3, witch is also known as Gingerbread, (how you do that? you go into Settings/About Phone and scroll down and you will see Android version.)
If you are on Android 2.2.2 or older then you must follow THIS simple tutorial, and you will update your phone to ver 2.3.3 and the baseband to so you can skip step one.
1. GB Baseband update
Now, if you got Gingerbread you must make sure that you got the latest baseband so it will work with all the custom roms that you are planing to install. Check THIS topic for that, and on the buttom you will se an image, if that basebang is identic with yours or similar, skip this step if NOT then download the P500-v20G-baseband.7z on the buttom of the page, and read to post so you will know what to do...its so easy.
TIP: Will will get 2 popups with OK and CANCEL, and the OK Button its blocked, dont press CANCEL wait 4-7 seconds before you can press the OK.

2. GB ROOT
First you must download the SuperOneClick app , extract it where you want, the run the SuperOneClick.exe from the folder, the app will open and then select ROOT , in the right, you will should see a succes message or ok in the console, reboot your phone then you will see in the menu the Super User icon.
TIP: If get you and error, then pull the battery out of the phone, disconnect the USB cable the power the phone back on and connect the cable and try again

Rom manager caused boot loop
Hi.. I installed Rom Manager onto my friends p500 (it was rooted earlier). but custom recovery was not installed..so i flashed the latest cmw through the rom manager app.
After which i selected to create a back up.. The mobile restarted (to enter the cmw recovery for backup operation).. but soon after the restart the mobile got stuck at the LG Logo.. I waited for about 10mins and it did not respond. Then i removed the battery and then power it on.. but it is stuck at the LG logo.. I am unable to get into custom recovery.. (power+home+volumeup).
Also, Mobile is not detected when connected to pc.
How to resolve this issue?? Please help

It's not the back button for XPERIA U, it's volume down. Also you need to install the drivers from the Flashtool directory. There is a drivers folder and a setup file to run inside it.

Download this for safekeeping for later if you need it & compare md5 checksum. Download a custom recovery, I recommend getting Amon RA 3.16, although TWRP 2.4.1.0 has been rock solid for me. Download SuperSU v1.10 flashable as well link
1. Run an android backup also backup contents of your internal storage.
2. Unlock bootloader
3. Confirm boot of the device and sync your Google account
4. Flash custom recovery through PH98IMG method or using fastboot "fastboot flash recovery **name-of-img**.img".
5. Flash the SuperSU update.
6. Confirm boot again. Once booted install this from Play Store.
7. In the Busybox app. checkmark replace all then press install>smart install. Then reboot.
8 (optional) Restore data from your adb backup (See step 1).
9. You are now rooted on the stock rom
I want to thank you so much for your response. I am extremely new to the terms you've mentioned such as fast boot etc. is there any way you can post a more broken down step by step or if you knew of a link on here that has steps for noobs ? Thanks !!

To get things started. To unlocked your phone. You must go here: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
That link is a great step by step way of showing you what to do to get it unlocked. After that come back and we can help you more with flashing a new recovery and getting your first ROM on your phone.
Is the all in one tool kit for unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone and if so is this all that needs to be done? :
Download the toolkit DO NOT RENAME THE FOLDER
2. Download Winrar from here. Install it after you download it
3. Extract the folder anywhere.
4. Run the program

Allow it to install the prerequisite software (these contain the needed drivers), but do not allow HTC sync to install or install it fully but disable HTC sync while you're working on this.

I think these are the one I used when I first rooted my HTC G2. And they've been on my computer ever since, so I had no trouble with my Rez.

Actually, the All-In-One kit by Hasoon will install the drivers for you. Just run the Rezound.exe and on the left on the to-do list just click on #1 to install the drivers and click the "GO" button.
I'm trying to understand hasoons all in one toolkit. Does it root and unlock the bootloader or just root the device ? Under features in his thread does that list what the toolkit does for you or steps one has to take to unlock the bootloader ? Thanks !

Don't think anyone can help a lot because it doesn't seem a normal issue.
What I would say for sure is that the firewall is not the problem because it is off and even if it were on that should not affect the communication between a computer and a phone via USB cable as that is not an IP communication.
PC Companion is not needed to flash a ROM with flashtools.
You don't install flashtools anywhere. The only thing you install for flashtool are the drivers and those are installed in the place where Windows needs to install them. But the application is not installed anywhere it can be run from any place as far as I know. It should work just perfectly from a pendrive, external drive, from drive C, D, or Z, ..., or whatever other storage device. Besides if the process starts you can imply flashtool is working properly.
So the only things I could bet are:
* you have a faulty ROM file. But probably this is not the case as I suppose if you have a faulty ROM flashtools will warn about it somewhere when it reads the ROM.
* you are not using the correct ROM for your phone model (ST25i or ST25a).
* you have a faulty USB cable or USB connector that lost connection on the middle of the process.
* you had not enough battery on the phone when you started the flash proccess so the phone lost power on the middle of the process.
(if flashtools finish the flash process correctly with the message that ask you to unplug and restart phone then 3 and 4 can be discarded)
What I would do is check which phone you own ST25i or ST25a and download the stock 6.1.1.B.1.100 ROM for your model from a reliable source and if possible from somewhere that offers an MD5 checksum to be sure you get the file without errors. Download again the last version of flashtools. Be sure when you flash to have enough battery on the phone (not sure what is the recommendation but more than 60% should be safe). When you flash rest the phone somewhere where nor the phone nor the cable move the least to avoid any lost of connection on the middle of the transfer.
Or you can just install PC Companion and update to the official ROM but probably that would be 6.1.1.B.1.54 ROM that doesn't work very good on my experience.
