Getting my M8 in day or so, and will be unlocking the bootloader right away. Basically, is there any reason to NOT use firewater? If I request a token to unlock my BL on HTCDev they will have a record of this and will refuse warranty on everything. Basically, will using firewater to unlock hinder any future updates or cause any problems down the road? The method that is not tracked is always the better method so..

Firewater requires root to run. Most temp root scenarios do not work on at&t phone. You can try them, but I haven't seen any work. If they don't work, you have to unlock boot loader to root, then run firewater.
Yup only reason I was able to firewater without HTC dev was via buying gpe version. Factbook oem unlock instead

Do you still get OTA updates from AT&T if you unlock and root the M8?

What would the better/preferred method of unlocking the bootloader for installing ROMs be? Using www.htcdev.com to unlock it or by using the instructions in the XDA thread for S-OFF?
Is there any real difference between the two?
(And for a newbie question, does unlocking the bootloader give you Root access or is that a different process?)
Thanks!
I know from using Revolutionary that it flashes a new unlocked HBOOT, and then you had to flash the Superuser zip to get root. This was on a HTC Desire. I'm picking my flyer up later, I'll confirm it once I unlock/root it.

Just read the general business terms of unlocking via HTC...should you i.e. need service under warranty after a failed FOTA etc. they open a door to decline free service due to the unlock. http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
Much smarter to unlock with Revolutionary if you dont need leaked Honeycomb in one of the two available (unofficial) Custom-ROM at this point, and unroot/S-ON without traces in case of need for service.
Root is a different process. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709
I would definitely use revolutionary. Correct me if I'm wrong but tthe HTC unlock doesn't unlock all partitions.

So this thread is for questions regarding the new Moonshine S-Off.
*Step by step guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317774
* linux/windows compatible.
*Full Ubuntu install its fine.
*Some ADB and fastboot command knowledge required. Guide Here:http://androidforums.com/optimus-u-...reference-how-set-up-adb-fastboot-ubuntu.html
Im excited... but trying not to get my hopes up too much.

It should either work without it or provide a way to get it. It would seem pretty pointless if it doesn't as if you are unlocked you can already s off.

Moonshine will facilitate your phones ability to unlock via HTCDEV, which is needed to s-off your phone. Once s-off, you no longer need to be unlocked.

I think your a little confused. Moonshine will likely be an s-off method (direct s-off)... anyway my point being that htcdev does not facilitate s-off at all, it simply unlocks the bootloader allowing the use of custom recoveries and hence roms/kernels. My money is on a direct s-off method because i know the nature of beaups and fuses hacking background and previous work.
furthermore if im correct then htcdev wont be entirely necessary because a different hboot can be flashed without it giving the user write access to the boot and system partitions
I don't think it's possible to unlock without htcdev... I can't wait to put some sense 5 then cm 10.1.... I actually had a question regarding backups before I root. How exactly should I be backing up my phone? Unlock–>put twrp –> use x app to create nandroid and get that on computer somehow and then flash?

Can you flash a custom recovery with s-off?
I thought beaups mentioned after s-off you flash the eng hboot, ruu 1.15, get supercid, and then unlock through htcdev.

It's possible that I'm confused, but, I do know that for facepalm to work, you had to be unlocked using super CID. Then you could do the s-off method. I was basing my statement on that. It's entirely possible that moonshine does not require an unlocked bootloader to work. We will find out in due time.
Edit: I'm fully aware that HTCDEV does not give s-off.
From my S-Off DNA
Moonshine will not require htc-dev unlock on the DNA. If it did, it would be useless for the stuck 2.xx users.
It will give you s-off and "UNLOCK" status, together.

Seeing as its called the same thing and the screenshots, I assume they found a common method. Possibly has huge implications.... its really hard to tell without the release or without a hint as to how it works. They, understandably, probably wont say if it can get patched or something.

NOPE. I tried this morning. Root is not achieved via towelroot.
Worked for me but I'm bootloader unlocked and is s-off. Firmware is stock ATT 1.58 after using the RUU.
Towelroot will only work if your write protection to the sys partion is turned off. It will most likely never work on stock b/c of this write protection unless geohot can somehow bypass it.

So if bootloader is unlocked, and device is S-Off it should work right? Im trying to update to 4.4.3, bootable RUU, towelroot, and flashify in an attempt to avoid a pc
I have an HTC One Max from Verizon, stock, unrooted, odex, running HBOOT 2.49.0000
I am trying to attempt to unlock the bootloader so i can S-OFF
When i use HTC's DEV site, and submit my token, it tells me that my MID is not allowed.
When i use rumrunner i get this error (see atttached image)
I have tried may things posted on XDA and utube with no success.
if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok again this is an HTC one max and I am trying to unlock the boot loader. I can't s-off until I unlock the boot loader first. If you have an HTC one max (not the HTC one m7 or m8), then tell me how you managed to unlock the bootloader.
You cant unlock the bootloader at HTCdev with this devicebecause of carrier regulations so you use firewater to do that. It unlocks your bootloader and gives you s-off
I need to change my sig to show the One Max lol
Also from doing some reading rumrunner isnt effective on HBOOTs after 2.46 or so

Sorry stupid Firefox entered the same thread twice. I will again attempt to use Firewater, but it didn't work for me the last attempt I made. Thanks for the advice and I will follow up.
I have a verizon one max HBOOT 2.49 unlocked bootloader by using Firewater http://firewater-soff.com/
After you read what it is for on the homepage click on the Instructions/Download Tab and of the 3 methods given, use the "Instructions (WeakSauce method - some m8 models and maybe others)" method.
Basically you need to download the app called Weaksauce it is in the steps for the method above and at the link -->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699089
When you install the app, it will give you root. install SuperSu from the market and begin the process of Firewater.
Note:
1. When you boot your device make sure weaksauce roots your device before you being to use firewater (you can download the Root Checker app from the market to verify that you have root before you start)
2. Download firewater using Internet Explorer
3. Follow the instructions carefully from both weaksauce and firewater
good luck

Question, now that i have successfully unlocked the device and achieved s-off, and also have installed a current of version of twrp and rooted, does installing future OTA updates affect any of this? would installing an OTA update cause me to have to re-root? or possibly lose my "unlocked, s-off"?
Thanks,

You will need to have the stock recovery in order to take an OTA. In my case for Kit Kat OTA, I was unlocked rooted and S-OFF and still got the update. You will probably lose root but unlock and S-OFF will remain.

So you are saying that if i updated my recovery to TWRP, i would not be able to install the OTA update? Also, did you lose root when you applied the update? and if so, how did you regain root?

That is correct, you need the stock recovery and stock rom, you can be rooted and will lose it, but S-OFF will remain. Root is easy to get back so it's no big deal
I just delt with this exact problem. U won't be able to get any while rooted. I ended up having to install the RUU via fastboot and lock my bootloader in order to get Ota updates. I still consider myself to be a noob. I think you gotta have the stock recovery installed as well.

I figured since the Max is not getting Lollipop, I might as well finally get around to rooting it so I can tweak it a bit, and maybe put a 5.1 rom on it later. I know the devices bootloader cannot be unlocked using the HTC tool. I tried unlocking and rooting the phone using Rumrunner, but that also failed. I got an odd error stating that the device was not rooted and was running an unsecure kernel. I have tried Googling the question and just came up with Rumrunner. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

I'm also looking to do the same thing (upgrade my OS for security reasons mostly). It seems CM is the most supported ROM for the MAX, what's the steps? Sunshine to unlock bootloader, s-OFF, and root? Then install safestrap or whatever ROM manager is needed? Then flash CM to a open slot?
Thanks everybody. I actually installed an app called Weaksauce2 that I read about on this forum. It apparently roots the device at each boot up. Afterwards, I then had the idea to run Rumrunner again. It actually finished without an error, but I am not sure if it did what it was supposed to do! Before I ran Rumrunner again, the device would hang up and restart when I went into the Play Store. It seems to be working now, but you cannot update the Supersu binary.

You gotta boot into recovery. You can usually do that by telling it to restart and holding volume down. Then you can see if you have s-OFF and unlocked and all that jazz. You need it to be unlocked to install ROMs

No. That is for the Sprint version of the phone. Mine is Verizon and that unlock utility does not work. I have it rooted using Weaksauce2 and it is doing OK! Not bad for a temp root solution!
The only way I found to perma root was to use Sunshine. Yeah I know it costs $25, but it works and you can unlock bootloader and S-off the phone too.
If anyone is around York, pa I have a java card which will s-off any version of this phone. Well any htc phone for that matter.
