GREAT app! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I just found an app in the Store called Clean Master. It essentially defrags your phone and cleans out the bloatware. I used it on my Note 8 as well. YOU have to be careful of what you pick but I found it easy to use. Check it out.

Do you know how ext file systems work? If this app legitimately "defrags" then its pretty much useless on android.

Haven't tried it but I just took a look.
It looks OK but I don't know what it uses to optimize memory..
It's does says it optimizes device memory for improved functionality
and device health.
Kinda the same as Defragmenting
But no its not Windows..lol

SD Maid FTW, the paid unlocker makes it 10x better too.

Didn't finish reading all the posts but it appears that AS Maid has difficulty working with Samsung. And since the S5 is a Samsung product that seems alittle counter-productive.

The terminology is misleading. You should never defrag any type of solid state drive or memory.

True, but most people don't keep their phones long enough for the effects to be noticed.

SD Maid is where it's at ;]

Let me guess - zipalign, sqlite database compression, fstrim and maybe even journaling disabled? No such thing as defragging in android. There is nothing in that app that you can't find here on xda (init.d scripts) for free without running an app.

Trust me when I tell you this . Clean master is not going to improve anything with your phone . The scripts in these custom Roms do the same thing plus way more . Don't let these type of apps mislead you. In some cases they cause way more problems than they solve . Just look at the comments from others in this thread that have more experience . What they say is 100% correct . This app is not unique in any way

when i tried clean master every rime it finish cleaning and you make it clean it always came back with the same results that it found 56mb of stuff you hit clean then run again same results to me history eraser does a better job.haven't tried ccleaner for android yet

To me none of them do a better job . You don't need any cleaner . . The reason you keep getting the same results is because there are no results to get . All of these cleaners are a complete waste . Why do you think the developers do not include these in any of their Roms ? The more you start to understand how your cell phone works and how the android OS works you wont waste your time with any cleaners again. . Save yourself and stop using these cleaners . When people have any little problem with their phone they always reach for cleaners . YOU DONT NEED ANY OF THEM

[Q] does overflashing harm the phone?

Probably a stupid question, but can you damage, or wear out the internal memory by flashing the phone over and over? I think I've flashed over 20-30 times by now, I'm just wondering if I'm running the risk of causing damage by overflashing. Thanks.
Honestly, flashing every possible second of every day for 2 years, you night star to notice some degrade, but the number of write cycles for the nand in the phone, you wont notice anything.

Ive been flashing like more than 50times found no prob. But wondering if i hv blank folders in my sd, will it affect phone performance? I hav like 30 blank folders dnt kw where they r from..
thanks for the replies guys, I thought that would be the answer but I wasn't sure. Thanks again
I flash at least onece a day. Have been for almost a year now. No problems here.

Jeeze I sure hope not
I would suspect that the internal memory would have the same typical lifespan of any other form of flash memory. I have heard varying degrees of expected life - but you will probably have another phone before you get to that point.

It might have an adverse effect on your ability to score with the opposite sex. Bloat FREEzer!

So, just thought I'd spread the word to my X2 family, Bloat Freezer is back in the market! Aaaaaand, it's free (with ads). I know, I know, a lot of you guys are die hard Titanium Backup fans, but a lot of us really enjoy the simplicity and efficiency of BF. I'm sure I'm not the only person happy to have the option back, plus I feel that the addition of a free version will (hopefully) lead to more people buying the paid version. So, um, yeah...check it out...

U can also download it free from bloatfreezer.com if u want to be certain u r getting the REAL bloat freeze

I have heard titanium doesn't completely freeze some apps. Bloat Freezer is like sticking the app in liquid nitrogen imho.
Have used it forever and it works freaking awesome.
Plus trey said that batch freezing is coming in a future update. Right now u can only defrost all or one at once or freeze one at time. Can't wait for batch freezing. Make it a lot quicker.

strange issue! looks to me like a deliberate action.
how by the accident may be replaced the file /etc/hosts??
Could be that maybe he didn't know that is what would happen exactly.
Do u have the original apks that u can go thru its contents and see if it was deliberately done or not? I would check but I just deleted the original by accident that I had downloaded from bloatfreezer.com
edit. Bloatfreezer.com download is 2.05 which I believe still had that problem. Im looking through it now and so far don't see anything that looks like deliberately editing hosts files.

Any reason I shouldn't root/overclock?

1. I'm a newb.
2. I've tried to research a good amount on my own.
I know that much customization will require root as a starting point. I'm not sure I want to run a custom rom or not yet as there doesn't seem to be much of a benefit at this current time. The overclocking interests me a bit.. because, why not? I guess that's my question. With using Dag's root and overclock, are there any stability issues at all? Other issues I might run in to? I just want to be positive of what I'm doing before I mess anything up. Should I run a backup of some sort or are roots relatively harmless?
Thanks in advance.
If you do a backup before you do anything its dam near impossible to brick your phone.
Make sure you understand what your doing before you do it not just do it because someone said it works.
Rooting releases your phone as it should be.
Just learn and enjoy

Overclocking kills battery life. Theres the risk of failing the rooting process too(doubt that will happen...). Flashing also increases flash counter and voiding warranty(go learn how to reset it)
flashing a lot damages internal memory also(you will prolly notice it after 1.5 yrs)
So are we recommending against doing this just for the sake of overclocking? or..
Sorry like you guys said I don't want to do it just to do it, want to be sure I'm doing this for a reason. If nothing else I can remove bloatware after root, right?

What is a lot for you?
I ran OC and honestly I can live with out it. Not worth the battery killing any faster. This thing is fast out of box, rooting and removing bloats will make it faster. Using a superscript takes away any other lag issue that I had with keyboard, touch screen responsiveness etc. My advice, don't OC.

LOL Seriously!! Those of us who tweak the phones this much will want something new well before 18 months! I had my Atrix almost exactly a year before I went to the Note.
Rooted. It's amazing how much easier that was than the equivalent process with Wp7 (getting a student dev account free was a pain in the ass). So I'm pretty sure I have Dag's kernel (pda.tar) uploaded. I want to try out holo's (don't see why not). I thought I could've just substituted his for Dag's initially, but couldn't figure out how. There was only one pda.tar file available and I saved both kernels in the same folder. It's really just the boot.img file that you're flashing, isn't it? I might not know what I'm talking about so rather than continuing if someone could just let me know how to update with holo's.

+1. Flashing does degrade non-volatile memory over time. Eeproms can't handle being written to over and over and over. Things like USB drives get around this by writting files non-contiguously to random blocks/sectors (and by using other methods), and keeping a table of blocks that have gone bad. So you can write a 1 mb file over and over and it isn't writing it to the first meg on the drive, it is going in pieces all over the place, randomly each time. If it writes a block and that doesn't pass a checksum test, it will write the block again to another area and mark the block as bad so it never writes to it again.
Of course this isn't great for performance on a USB drive, but that is why this IS a problem on something like the OS partition of a phone. There you can't write randomly, you need contiguous files for performance, so each time you flash a new rom you are writing to the same memory space every time. Eventually you wear it out and there is no "bad block" table to help.

82 system files/bloat safely frozen with titanium Pick n choose !

I have compiled 82 system apps that I have frozen via titanium backup pro, I have risked a lot with my 600$ device and guinea pigged myself as a test subject ,for the greater cause .Of course I do have plenty nandroid backups if anything were to have gone wrong .As of now there are no know issues, force closes, etc....force closes are common when u freeze the wrong app, just for future reference !Also some force closes render the phone helpless unless you do a battery pull..in which the HTC one dorsnt have a battery to pull.
So as far as my compiled list is concerned it Is safe for everyone to use.
Everything works as should. You can choose to safely freeze whichever of the 82 apps/apks you prefer to. Feel free to add any apps you have also tested to be safe to freeze .
This greatly helps reduce lag , free up ram and and may even provide better battery life ,due to android os that sometimes has many system apps... that we don't know what they do exactly but many greatly affect our battery life because they unnecessarily run in the background and drain batter and the majority of them we never use .
This is the list freeze as many or as little as you desire to.
Every one check marked indicates it's safe to freeze .
NOTE: DO NOT DELETE/REMOVE ANY OF THESE APPS IN TITANIUM BACKUP UNLESS YOU POSITIVELY HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP IN cwm or twrp RECOVERY.I AM ONLY PROVIDING INFO ON "FREEZING APPS" "NOT DELETING".
I WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OR FEEL OBLIGATED TOO...FOR THE LACK OF FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS POSTED .

Well, this list is very subjective. Alot of what you froze alot of people actually use. Like street view...document viewer...the remote app...among others. From looking at what you diabled it seems all you want to do is make calls and text lol.
THIS IS ABOUT WHAT CAN BE FROZEN WITHOUT ANY SYSTEM ISSUES OR FORCE CLOSES .
If you want to unappreciated that's fine too.
Obviously I have takin the freezing to an extreme,it's called freezing as many apps as possible that DONT AFFECT SYSTEM FUNCTION IN A NEGATIVE MANOR.There are many I'm sure who don't use these apps and would find It fine to do so ....and only care about speeding up there device ...I have done no wrong ..infact if anything I've answered possible questions in the future on if them apps can be frozen ....maybe there are people who would want the most possible options .So it is up to whomever to pick and choose what they want to freeze from the list. All I have done was made It clear that if they want to take it to the extreme ,all these system apps and apks are safe to freeze with no issues .

You think you quoted the wrong post
Exactly what I was looking for, one of the first things I do when I got my phone. I can confirm this is a good list

200 Apps Installed.

Ok so here i am, i was looking at google for explanations and unfortunately it doesnt help. i was with my s3 for almost a year now, i have about 200 apps installed. bloatwares are deleted. I have dozens of apps and 3D games. i always flash rom every week and it is because every 3 days my phone becomes very laggy. The first two days are smooth, but why on the third day it always lags as hell and i got no other choice but to flash another rom(all custom roms lags on the 3rd day no matter what rom it is). This is my burden, so what im trying to say is that do i have the same experience as all like you guys? and if u guys would tell me to delete some of my apps i would say wtf i needed those games because i do not have a ps vita or psp i also needed all my aps and i already deleted bloatwares. So, does S3 just sucks? should i use other higher phone? its just im tired of flashing every week. and i cant afford to just install max of 20 apps just to maintain the smoothness.
PS: I hope some people can show their insights with this. Thanks.

Aluru

Likewise, I often have over 200 apps without "lag" on various different ROMs. Including TouchWiz ROMs.
200 Apps aren't running consecutively so the amount of apps installed shouldn't have much affect on every day usage in terms of latency.
More likely, there's a specific app leaking or doing something it shouldn't

As Glebun said, buy Autostarts on Google Play and disable all unnecessary apps during phone startup.

So you too doesn't experience lags. i'll just look for a script where i can list all apps installed and ill gonna post it here. it lags like hell on every day thas pass. its just not acceptable to be like this.

i already have rom toolbox and i use advanced freeze and autostarts from there. i believe its not the culprit. maybe something is wrong with the apps or my damn phone.

just look at the link i provided. That is the solution to your problems. Deleting your apps wouldn't do anything.

ps: facebook app scrolling lags but not too much unlike before. or is this the application's fault and not the phone.
