My i9300 is running slimrom 4.4.2 build 5 (the newest in time of writing) and I have a problem with the sound through the headphone jack is just crackling and inaudible. Here are the steps I have taken to try to solve this:
Cleaning the jack port
Tried different headphones, that are confirmed to work for long periods of time on other equipment i.e. computer, iPod etc.
Flash different builds of slimrom
Flash slimrom and not install any apps at all
The jack audio works when I do a clean install, but after a while the sound goes back to being just crackling and completely inaudible. This just happened randomly one day with the build 4 of the rom, and since then I've flashed build 5 numerous times to try to find a culprit.
Is there something I've overlooked, and if so what can I do? This problem is really a nuissance as I use my phone a lot to listen to music and podcasts.
Any help appreaciated!
Easy way to rule out software is go back to stock firmware and test. If its still poor then its hardware.
OK, so I'm back on stock, and the problem persists. Any tips on how to fix it? Is it even fixable?
This is hardware issue mate. There are guide to change usb, headphone ect but for this I'd take it to a shop. Sorry

I'll cut right to the chase~
I switched roms today, after having too many problems with my AOKP install since the latest update, and everything was working fine until just now when my headphones literally stopped being detected, all music coming out of the speakers no matter what, and all i can hear on the headphones is a constant, rhythmic throbbing sound, similar to when the headphones try to connect.
I get this noise throughout boot too, and never used to.
I am honestly fearing the worst that my audio is F***ed.
Rom WAS HydrogenICS 27.04 with SiyahKernal 3.1, it is now NEAT Rom with the same kernel.
Please, if you can help at all do so, i have tried all 4 headphones i have.
Hey guys I need some help.
I noticed the last few days that my headphone jack in my phone is not working any more. Basically what happens it that when I'm trying to play music on Winamp, all I get is some crackling noises and a very feint noise of the song playing in the background. When trying to play a podcast in Beyondpod, I just get no audio at all. These things do work when playing out of my speaker, however.
I am on Jokersax CM9 v 0.6.1. I don't have enough posts to post in that forum to see if it was related to that ROM or not, but I don't believe it was.
I'm guessing this is a hardware issues and may not be able to be fixed but I wanted to see if you guys had some ideas first.
Thanks!
what gives you the idea it may be a hardware issue? Have you tried cleaning out the headphone jack with say a can of air?
you can buy a new back cover / chassis housing / speaker / antennae / audio jack for cheap on ebay, and it replaces pretty easy, the actual audio jack cable to the motherboard is a bit more involved of a replacement but it can be done also, there are youtube guides on replacing digitizers and that process gets you all the way to the volume / audio jack / camera cable.
I had this same issue once. There was a very tiny piece of paper/pocket lint shoved into the bottom of the jack. Find the smallest tweezers you can or use a paperclip and some patience to remove it if you find anything.
Have you tried using different earphones?
Try switching to CM7, when I was on CM9 my earphones were glitchy also. They would randomly stop playing, sometimes every minute sometimes every 10 minutes.
If it doesn't work try doing what the guy above me said. Try his first, it seems the easiest haha
Hello everyone, I am having an issue with my galaxy s3. The problem is that I can't remember when this issue started and if it's a software or hardware issue.
This only happens sometimes and I've tried different headphones and it happens with all the headphones I have and once again it happens sometimes.
When I am trying to listen to music, sometimes the music plays through the headphones (most of time this is what happens) but sometimes the music (with the headphones plugged in) plays through the loudspeaker. I think it could be a hardware issue from the fact that sometimes while listening to music the music stops as if I had disconnected the headphones from the jack when in fact they're still plugged in.
Since it happens sometimes I'm not sure it's a hardware issue and I should get it changed. I haven't rooted or changed anything. Stock dbt international S3. Could this be a software issue or a hardware issue?
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Most likely hardware.
It sounds like a hardware issue, it is common with headphone jacks.
You could try a few things though, like cleaning the headphone jack with Q-Tips, trying different headphones and using a different app to play music.
Have you put extra stress on the headphone jack? Or dropped the phone badly?
If all else fails, backup your apps, contacts, pictures and all other personal data and install stock firmware using Kies.
Best of Luck!
Mine does this too sometimes. Omega latest version 34 here. Headphones I use are Sennheisers made for iphone. They are not totaly compatible with Samsung running android.
Yeah, I'm running completely stock! Maybe I'll give it a clean with some alcohol and a q tip. If that doesn't work I'll reset and wait for the next update. If it isn't fixed by then, then I'll be exchanging it under warranty.
Any other suggestions?

Are you sure it has the same issues with stock headphones? Mine not. Its more like an incompatibility with headphones made for IOS/iphone, an issue that is not present at all on HTC phones for instance. Therefore Im in serious doubt that this is either a problem covered by the guarantee or solved by cleaning with alcohol. Keep us posted.
I'd like to update:
After updating to 4.1.2 I'm still having the same issue. I cleaned it out with alcohol and a Q-tip, and it worked! for all of 10 minutes... I plugged and unplugged maybe 20 times and it worked fine every time. I set it down for about an hour and then I came back and tried it again and it didn't work!
This is frustrating. After Xmas I'm going to format it and set everything back to factory (no apps, no data, nothing!) and see if that fixes it. I guess it could be an error somewhere with an app or software.... If that doesn't fix it right off the bat then I'm taking it in.... Unless any of you have any suggestions!
So, my device was working just fine all day, got in the car and plugged in the AUX port and the volume was very very low, unplugged it and all of the sudden my speakers don't work. Not even a hint of sound. I was running an AOKP ROM, so I did a big bad wipe & flashed TrickDroid and there's STILL nothing. AOSP or Sense I get no audio.
There was no kind of strange noise indicating I had blown a speaker, and it wasn't turned up very loud either. Hardware failure? Is there some kind of strange RAM setting that may be blocking audio? Is there anything I can do before I call HTC?
Also, I'm not 100% clear on how this warranty business works. Obviously, I flash custom ROM's so is there anything I need to do to prepare the device to be sent in to HTC?
This is the exact issue i had a few weeks ago, and I had to do a warranty because nothing fixed the issue, even a nandroid back to my original stock did not fix the problem.
I sort of have the same problem but not exactly. I was just using the speakers on the phone and it just popped and stopped working altogether. I have no idea if it's a hardware problem either.

Are you on stock Rom and/or did you flash any audio mods prior to this?

I am having this exact problem. The last time my speakers or earphones worked was before I plugged an AUX cable in my car. The speakers never turn on for any application and the earphones are very very low volume. Im thinking about sending it in for repair.
Since update to marshmallow, the audio jack can't be used anymore. Had similar problem last year but it was quickly solved by mutiple times of plugging in the earphones this time it seems dead.Tried different earphones, no luck. The sound still playing on the phone speakers and not through the earphones. Sometimes a certain earphone would have sound but only on one side. Should i flash previous firmware? im not sure if it was caused by the update or the hardware problem. Phone is not rooted btw. Tried cleaning the audio jack as well. Any help would be appreciated
