hey guys, Z2 was launched this week in Brazil so i am looking to replace my lg g2 for z2. but i saw many complaints about people not being able to use the camera when is hot outside. even after 5 pictures the camera got warm and shutdown. i will never use 4k video, but i plan to use the max 16:9 manual resolution, ia mode and 1080p 60fps. in my g2 i always recorded long videos and never got a camera shutdown, even tried yesterday recording 4k with a mod and after 5 minutes video was saved and nothing happened. and people with this problem live in places with good temperatures like 20c, here in my city usually is 30c or 35c so i am a bit worried if i will buy a very expensive phone without being able to use the camera. so this was already fixed or is hardware problem?
My country's temperature is also at 30c. The camera will get hot, but I've never experienced a shutdown before

In newer models yes
Sony also tried to fix on the firmware side so old model devices have less heat

Mine is from batch 14w22 which I believe is a newer build and I've gotten a shutdown notice due to heat and I was only using 1080p. I was using the filters effect which was probably resource taxing.
Update, I am on firmware 402. I believe there is an update called 438 out now or soon.

Freeze overheat control service
I live in a very hot city, and it's almost impossible to use AR effects. 4k video at least works for a couple of minutes, but AR effects closes as soon as I try to use it due to camera overheating. I was wondering if the temperature service was disabled... If this issue would be solved. So I froze the overheating control service using titanium backup ( Overheat control - com.sonyericsson.psm.sysmonservice). And it worked! My camera stopped to force closing due to overheating. I think it's a software problem, the temperature level trigger to shut down the camera must be have settled too low,, if the phone was too hot, it should turn it off entirely, not just the camera. Well... My camera is working fine now. But I think this is not a safe solution. I guess if for some reason my Z2 get really hot, with overheating control disabled, it would not be powered off to prevent damage and my phone would be toasted. But I think there will be no trouble to freeze overheating control before using camera and activate it later... That's really annoying, but it's better than lose a moment cause your camera refuses to work due to supposed overheat.
*just to remember... In order to freeze overheat control service you need to be rooted
SONY Xperia Z2 D6543 4.4.2. 17.1.2.A.0.314 stock ROM rooted
I have downclocked z2 with mpdecision and multicore powersave. No overheating issues during 4k recording.

I just got my Z2; Ambient temp around 22c; had to really work it to get a thermal shutdown; switching from multi burst camera to 4k to generate the heat. It was the stupid CGI Dinosaur nonsense that did it in the end. I can't see it being an issue with normal point and shoot.
If you find this hot, try brave frontier for 5 mins. It made my phone reboot cause it was to hot to operate

I had a problem with the overheating issue too,but while playing games - Compared my Z2 with Iphone 5 playing Dungeon hunter 4 - ew my phone overheated like crazy at the upper right corner where is the CPU.. ( no overheating at all from the Iphone.. - -) And another thing is that the glue holding the camera class circle is abit spilled at some places (you need to get closer to see it)...im not sure the overheating coused that .. but while gaming or vrecording the phone overheats alot.
Hi guys. I am considering replacing my HTC Sensation with Z2. With Sensation, I use to take lots of pictures when I am on some trip. Generally, I am speaking about taking 50+ pictures when I am on trip (ZOO, castle, rocks...). Can Z2 manage this? Can you help me please? Thank you

Well mate, I don't know what to tell you, some people are reporting that its impossible for them to use cam at all, not only 4k but for taking pictures,
for myself I have never experienced over heating problems with normal usage, said that i meant on using camera for taking photos or videos which arent in 4k mode. If you're gonna use it as camera, I strongly suggest not to play games on it just before you start heavy using camera for example.
Where I live, the temperature was over 39 degrees of C, I recorded 4k outdoors for more then 8 mins, took lots of (+20) pictures in nature and all and never had problem, just don't leave it direct on sun, it gets very hot and it becomes probably useless,
you only have to take 'care' with those kind of things, other then that you're ok.
In my case, my z2 would certainly manage that kind of usage without a problem.
So here is some info i gathered from 5 Xperia Z2s
Device 2 and 3 match my 1st Z2 and my replacement Z2, however i managed to get 21 mins of 4k recording with my 2014w22 replacement device
Good thing ive got a bunch of freinds with Xperia Z2s and xperias in general
Device 1:
purchase date: 15th of August
41mins -4k rec
Temp after rec:61c
batch: 2014w29
Device 2:
purchase date: 8th of June
3mins:59sec -4k rec
Temp after rec:72c
batch: 2014w17
Device 3:
Purchase Date: 31st of June
5mins:33sec -4k rec
temp after rec: 58c
batch: 2014w22
So here is something ive knoticed, new xperias around w30 or newer are flawless. there are people here in XDA who can prove that too :/
edit- forgot to mention, devices 1 and 3 didnt have any heating issues under normal ussage
Just tried 4k recording. Stopped it manually at 10:00. Can't imagine me using it in the near future. Flickering screen indoors with tl-tubes, and I won't be buying an 4k screen anytime soon .
Mind you though, it's around 18 degrees C here. I can imagine the phone quiting on me a lot sooner when it's 30C. Also tried AR, no heating problems so far.
But, when it was 30+ degrees, the camera did shut down after 5 minutes of testing the white balance. But that was before I installed .314. So I would have to re-test that. Unfortunately there's a fat chance we will reach those temps before next year.

I got w17, manually stopped my recording around 10 mins when I was outside, ambient temperature about 35,36 degrees.
My D6543 is w22. It's working fine now after freeze overheat control service. No more camera closing due to overheat. I could not even start AR effect before and I was not playing games or any hard usage before trying. 4k video is not an issue for me cause I won't use it. But before freezing overheat control, sometimes my camera refuses to take even simple photos....
Ambient temperature: 28°
Battery temp: 36°
CPU temp: 44°
Now let's start AR effects (overheat control service is disabled)
After 7 minutes recording
Battery: 47°
CPU: 72°
Temperatures seems to be stable, they were not increasing since minute 3....
Now 4k recording...
Before
Battery: 43°
CPU: 54°
After 4 minutes
*using internal storage
Battery: 53°
CPU: 84°
I accidentally stopped recording. But it seems it was still getting hotter.

I just picked up Sony Xperia Z2 (D6503) a week ago and I love everything about this phone. However, I am getting overheating issue with my phone. Just today, I was at my niece's birthday party and I took 12 pictures in may be 5 minutes and I get a message about Camera app needing to shutdown to cool down. The area above Sony logo and around NFC logo got really warm. I am aware that shooting 4k video can cause overheating but just shooting regular pictures causing overheat is concerning to me. I have owned Z1 before and it didn't have this problem. I was wondering if anyone else is having this overheat issue with just taking pictures? I shot pictures in Default setting iA mode and pictures saved to Internal Storage. I didn't change any settings.
Yes I also have this issue and three store have refused to replace it, claiming it is a feature
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk
Yes I have it too. I'm enquiring the store I've bought it from to get a replacement.
I was taking a few pictures this afternoon , the phone did get warm but didn't show up any overheating messages.
No overheating taking pictures or shooting 1080p in my case.
I have done more investigation into this. The closing of the camera app doesn’t seem related to CPU temp, it appears to be dependant on Battery temp. I have been able to record 4k video with the CPU at 70, but as soon as the battery temperature gets to 42, the camera force closes.
This is also why the camera will overheat and close for other use. If the battery is already hot, eg after charging or gaming, the camera is more likely to push the battery temp to 42, triggering the force close.

Hmmm...I wasn't playing any games before I took the pictures. Phone was in my pants pocket before I took it out to take pictures. I do notice taking pictures will cause my phone to get warm. I wonder if this "problem" can be fixed with firmware update.
Well, i also got this problem but with SocialLife app video streaming on Facebook. After 8 minutes of video the phone crashed. Strangely, if you play games that make the phone as hot as an oven nothing happens, turn on the camera and boom, force close / sometimes reboot.

Yes Ive noticed this too
I am considering buying a Z2 in the next couple of days as a gift for my wife :victory:, it is stylish, with great power
but after reading about the overheating issue( while normal usage, NOT 4K recording) of this phone and the self cracking back glass of it.
I started to have second thoughts about it
until I read in an article somewhere that this phone uses the heating pipe technology to dissipate heat ( I think the heating issue coming from poor implementation of this tech) and till now (Z3 launch around the corner) sony hasn't commented on
what about having a normal TPU case on the back of it, since plastic can absorb heat from the back glass cover and dissipate it to the air, since plastic absorb and release heat faster than any glass ( some like DIY, Poor man's heat sink)
and what about rooting the phone and throttle the CPU your self by under-clocking it.
I really like this phone and I want to buy it and Sony was close, really close to craft the perfect android phone but they blew it
Also I hear that after batch 14w25, those problems disappeared, is that true ???
please help anyone :fingers-crossed:
I've had no overheating issues whatsoever with mine w19 iirc, under volting /clocking will of course reduce heat, I have mine set to 2ghz and a - 60 uv
Great question so far, I can say to you that DEPEND on the device. some got that issue, some not, and you cant check the 13wxx or 14wxx until you open the tray(which mean you open and use the phone). Just wait after 3 Sep and see which one you prefer. Current price for z2 is around $600 and the z3 is likely $1k when it launch. Hope this help.

Had no problems with my phone under normal usage. Btw no root just only stock.
If your wife is a average girl who loves shopping online, selfie picture , surfing the net, playing cute games, and Facebooking.
She will be pleased cause this phone is a stylish, beautiful, powerful to enough to her needs.
Most overheating issues are 4k video shooting and camera that was open too long to overheats. If you are playing kritika, high settings will slow the phone but normal setting is a smooth. FYI, Kritika is a high 3d game.

You need a custom kernel which in turn needs an unlocked bootloader, as there's no sources beyond 402 yet you need 402 fw to use dooms custom kernel or if on cm/pa/pac/carbon there's m5 kernel

I am expecting Z2 price to go down, once Z3 is lauched, and I am not going to pay 1k for a phone, it is not a car, it is not boat, and it is not a rocket...

my only problem is the overheating and (rumored ) self cracking issue

I have 2 kids, so beside taking selfies, there will be serious work for back camera ( at least in superior auto mode)
and there always will be Facebook, instagram and twitter :silly:
and i am sure she will be pleased, now when u say
" Camera Open too Long"
too long means... 2 Minutes of continous picture taking in Superior Auto mode
or 5 minutes 4k video ( I am not going to use that ) what so ever
my problem in that when the phone in action... it tends to overheat ( Facebook, twitter, picture taking) as the reporting suggest
I am right or wrong... please help
yeaterday i went to the store and tried a Z2
the unit was 14w19
I was able to record 6 minutes of 4K video before the phone shuts the camera down because of overheat
from my observation, I think not all units are equals regarding all issues
- Self Cracking
- overheating
- gaps
and I think sony discovered the problems and solved them after 14w25... but it went quit about it
because I haven't seen anyone around the web complaining after build 25 and the ones after it
what do you think men

Just to support your idea, I work as a phone repair/replace in a phone accessories shop, I hear so much about self crack or do nothing and the screen just crack/broke. It is non-sense. The phone nowadays is equiped by high-quality glass not just a platis or some kind of easy-break-crytal. Be realistic and reasonable. I can give a list of more than 20 devices I use so far which never crack screen or self dead. NEVER BELIEVE in internet 100%, it is reference. If you want more information just go to any phone repair/phone shop and ask that question. Becareful otherwise everyone will laugh at your face.

Very well, I lack of the phrase "the back as well". There is no way like that UNLESS you record 4k video for more than 20mins(or gaming bla bla) which cause the temperature up to 50 Celsius degree or more THEN you throw in the water for cooling. THAT is the most stupid thing to do with everything not just phone. Sudden change in temperature from more than 20 Celsius degree(from 50 down to about 30) is causing crack/damage to the item. You can search for it everywhere and maybe from Chemistry or Physic class in high school. Do I say it clear?
The phone works almost perfect, but there is still few flaws... I hope it can be resolved on future firmware updates.
The most annoying is the random heat, mine doesn't heat up when charged... but it does heat up on random condition. The most extreme heat I got is when I watch 20 minutes high-res VR videos with a cardboard. I almost drop the phone when I take it out from cardboard because it's too hot when I touch it, I think it's like 70 degree
CPU-z and AIDA64 also always report extreme 70+ degree on pa_therm1, although phone is idle. I've googled this and seems that many owners also have this problem too.
The second is auto-brightness sometimes will screw up gyro and auto rotate. When the problem occur, I had to turn off auto-brightness.
I was on ROM 7.1.8, updated to 7.2.3 didn't solve this problem. Then I moved to AOSP 5.11, the problems are still there
How is the aosp ROM for daily use and how much free internal space do u get using this ROM..my device heated up once wen viewing vr video but then is went back to normal and haven't had any issues after viewing vr videos

Cpu Z is a fake app. My moto e 1st gen (condor) has a SD 200 1.2ghz dual core SoC , but CPU Z always shows SD 410. Don't know why people use it , but the app is a big fake. :silly:
So I've heard that Lenovo Moto Z is the new daydream ready phone. Have you tried using it with daydream view? How is the performance? I also heard that this phone tends to overheat. Is it a problem when playing in VR?
I know the Pixel phones have been producing a lot of heat while using daydream. The reason for the heat is the amount of power required to run VR which causes the phone to throttle from all the heat being produced. You can expect about the same amount of heat considering the specs of the phone. I could imagine the Moto Z would perform about the same as the Pixel considering the Pixel only has a slightly over clocked version of the Snapdragon 820 used in the Z. Since people have just started receiving the Android N update for the Z more people should be able to comment on actual performance soon. Hope this somewhat helped.
I have the Moto Z and the daydream headset is on the way. I'll give a review on what I think when it arrives in a few days. And how long it takes to overheat (get the on screen overheating message). Anything else you want me to check out on it?
The daydream headset is good on the moto z. The biggest annoyance is that the headset allows some light to come in on the side. I imagine this will vary for each person based on head/face shape. I've played with it multiple times for 30+ minutes. I never got the message about getting too hot. But every time I took it out the phone was way too hot to hold. I mean it would probably burn your hand if you held onto it. Which kind of worries me. But I would set it down and not use for for 15+ minutes and it would be back to normal. The headset/remote is better than a google cardboard. But the app/game selection is not as good and the samsung gear vr. But may get there over time. There is very few apps/games available. I did see both netflix and hulu are on it but didn't try either one yet. The battery usage was less than 10 percent for the 30 minutes or so I used it for.
If google keeps pushing it. It will be a worthwhile purchase in 6 months to a year. But if you buy one now just expect a better google cardboard experience.
I agree, daydream app is very buggy due to heat issue. I used youtube app for vr and the phone was normal, but using youtube vr app inside daydream for 30 minute causes extreme heat that can burn your hands! I highly not reccommend using daydream app for now bc it could cause serious damage to the battery.
I have tried, I feel that it's zoomed in too much.
For example in netflix, I almoust don't see the the whole tv. But also in other apps some menus is partly outside the view.
I made a post about it on reddit in the daydream forum (not allowed to post links here, so you have to find it your self, title is "Daydream on Moto Z too zoomed in")
Yeah, the heat issue was very scary. I've never had a phone get that hot in such a short period. I didn't know if the hardware is just getting pushed too hard or its a software problem. I'm hoping for the latter.
And if/when google comes out with a new version of the daydream view headset. They need to make it not so much "one size fits all". I have a cheap plastic cardboard that was only 15 bucks and has better adjustments and fit than the daydream view. I could stand it with the cardboard since it was so cheap.
But I will say the controller is very good. But it needs a button or two on the bottom/top edge. Or games are going to be very basic and probably not catch on. Unless they add the option to use a second daydream controller. Then oculus rift/htc vive style games can be made for it.
Strange, I have upgraded to Nougat on my Moto Z bit the Daydream app is still "incompatible with my device". Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks
Ken
I have a daydream headset lying around. Used it 2-3 times on my z force and now it's gathering dust... Novelty at best. It did work well with the phone though. Only issue I found was the mask's strap was hard to adjust so it would stay put.
I have Moto z and daydream . It gets hot but have never gotten the overheat warning. Use it while wife sleeps with Bluetooth headphones to watch Netflix or Hulu . And ignore the guy who says it's too zoomed in. You can adjust it within each app. For Netflix just look up at the ceiling and a menu allows size adjust for screen , and to let you move the screen so you can lay on your back while watching . Can do similar on Hulu . I recommend opening the apps separate without going through Google daydream though maybe that's the heating issue. But yea I've used daydream app for 5 hours strait and my phone didn't over heat.
Did anyone tried to use it with a custom rom or are you all talking about stock experience?

No one has any experience with custom roms and daydream?
Hi,
I noticed my xperia 1 mark III is overheating even in normal use, especially in 120Hz mode. I hope sony will fix it as this device is really scalding.
It really burns!
This is the hottest device I ever had
Software version: 61.0.A.11.23
You're burning up your battery. Time is of the essence, resolve this issue fast. Shutdown the phone if it gets too hot!!!
Auto thermal shutdown may not protect the display/mobo especially if in hot ambient temperatures, in direct sunlight, or when charging.
Keep brightness at 50% or less.
Factory reset.
If that fails...
Find the apks or/and services causing to high drain.
If that fails, return the device.
The clock is ticking, Mr Wick tic-tok...
This is a serious problem. I took some photos and videos (4k and slowmotion) while standing in the sun. Outside temperature was about 23°C (73°F). After about 5 minutes I got an overheat message.
An app that I installed earlier registered an internal temperature of 40.5°c. It felt really hot to (while in a bumper case).
After I put the phone on a granite kitchen table it cooled down in about 10 minutes.

It is serious. Turn off the phone when it feels very warm before it goes over temperature.
Using a AMOLED display in direct sunlight is never a good plan. Limit it to seconds of use.
I have had this same problem since I got it to the point where I got an alert that some apps would be shutdown.
US Version purchased from Adoroma in the states : 61.0.A.11.23
Just another aggravating issue with this phone. Some are having boot loops of a sort also! What is wrong with these companies? Can they not produce a decent product anymore? 1300.00 and it's junk???????????
I am getting overheating as well, a little warm most of the time I use the phone.
Definitely was the 120hz display turned on. Less warm when the 60.
When using the wireless charger.
Anytime I use the cameras.
I am on the latest update as well.
Hm, very intriguing issue with $1300 flagship smartphone from such a respectable brand. I had similar problem with Xperia 1 II in several occasions. And... I think I know what's the problem (not bloody hot SD888 as you might suggest!). Please have a good look at dissasembly video:
Then compare it with $390 LG V60 ThinQ disassembly video from the same guy. Spot the difference! And it is - missing cooling system on Xperia 1 II / 1 III whereas LG V60 has quite big copper vapour chamber! Maybe that's why my LG V60 never gets really hot. So the question is ... WTF are you doing SONY?!
Well, I just sent back my first Pixel - 5A - for overheating. I have been watching the 1 iii and the 5 iii as a possible purchase...but I am turned off by the dedicated assistant button that might possibly be remappable... but for sure I will NOT buy either of these mark 3 phones if they overheat! Makes me sick just how badly most new phones are functioning.
Yeah same, it seems to turn off randomly when using the cameras and when 120HZ screen is on.

I think it's the case for warranty replacement or even return if possible. This is one of the reason why I don't buy expensive brand new phones parallel imported (not officially sold in my country). Just because it means no proper warranty, no service, no nothing.
My Xperia 1 III is getting extremely hot even when taking photos (only 2-3) then get message about hot temperature and apps shutting down.
I use Streamlabs mostly (sometimes Prism) to broadcast to YouTube, foundthe phone almost useless! Overheating in seconds from start of s stream! I'm using my old Samsung Note 10 again as Sony wasn't simply useful.
Now I found a solution to it (sorry solution is too big word)
- I've turned "object tracking" off in camera
- I've turned autofocus on in camera
- I've turned 120hz off
Today we had hot day here in UK (27 Celcius ) I did my tests.
Streamlabs at 1080p , 7000kbps , 30fps run outdoor for about an hour smoothly. Connected to charger started to overheat.
Not to mention that tethering makes it hot quickly (so with Samsung).
Prism at 1080p 60fps run smoothly for couple of minutes and then crashed.
Didn't connect the charger.
I use Streamlabs to transmit 5-6 hours of stream into YouTube using mobile network in most if the times and whilst driving (so changing stations constantly)
I found that using WiFi it doesn't get as hot.
Also charging makes it very hot - SONY advertised it as able to by powered directly by a charger without charging battery, how and where do I find that option?
Is it available using car charger with quick charge 3.0?
I like the phone , like the shape , size and feel to it. Camera is OK (I own Sony a6500 )
Hate the fact of poor selfie camera in such expensive phone (I do live streams using selfie cam too)
Right I've ordered a return of my phone and have 30 days to send it back what alternatives do I have? Really like the SONY if it wasn't overheating I'd love it. Is there a solution to it? Cooler anything?
The things I like about the phone are:
*shape and overall feel in hand
*Cameras are ok don't really see if they great quality or not will still use my a6500 camera.
*Like the fact that can use sd card
*Love finger print reader in power button and seperate camera button
*like the fact that there's no rounded edges - hate them in my Samsung Note
I blame my problems with overheating by poorly made apps not the phone itself and not sure changing the phone will change it.
What are the options should I consider? Samsung S21 Ultra ? iPhone 12,13?
I'm a SONY fan and had many if their phones and that's why I'm looking for a solution otherwise would send it back straight away...
Can anyone help me with my problem?
Many thanks
Bart
Unfortunately greedy sony didn't provide any cooling solution to mark 3... Check disassembly videos, there is no any cooling solution at all, like you will find in asus - small vapor chamber etc. Literally nothing!
They knew snap 888 is overheating. They must have tested this device before releasing it, isn't it?
But no, still didn't apply any cooling solution. And that's a big shame and huge problem of this device.
Not sure if qualcomm provide any updated drivers to assess this problem or not. Or if sony will try to fix it. So far they did nothing and still it overheats. Mine too and you are right by saying that on 3G/5G it is hotter than on wifi.
I wonder how they can market battery as capable and better for 3 years with such hot device. Temperature of course has huge negative impact on battery longevity.
Sad but true
I'm quite shocked! Thanks for the info about disassembly videos...
I'm thinking if getting a cooler which you attach to the body.
What I forgot to mention that cameras itself (the lenses) don't get that hot is the area under them and closer to the centre. So must be processor and lack of cooling system.
Not sure what to do...
We have a hot weather now so I will test it intensively (if I was a Sony tester I'd never allow for the phone to be released like this).
Heating problems is why I keep saying that for any SOC/CPU/GPU manufacturer to keep upping the speeds of these things is STUPID! I can virtually guarantee that from now on every new CPU produced by all OEM's is going to overheat! Have you ever walked into a data center, with hundreds of servers running? You have to wear ear protection because the roar of all the internal cooling fans is deafening!
So then "we" attempt to put similar CPU's inside a device the size of a small remote control WITHOUT a fan and wonder why it overheats? There are only so many ways to keep the phone(s) cool. Use them while frozen solid in a block of ice, or better yet, stop running so many CPU/GPU intensive apps all at the same time. It's simple thermodynamics at work here. The more you have running at the same time, the harder the SOC needs to work, the hotter it is going to run. Another solution, that is literally unacceptable to most people, is to code in a lowering of the speed of the SOC. If this needs to be done then it becomes very clear that building a new, faster SOC every year is STUPID!
One more thing... I've heard that Xperia 1III is capable of powering the phone directly without battery charging to lower the heat...Does anyone know how do I turn this future on?

This is applicable with the game enhancer. You can add some apps there and when you open it, you can enable HS power control. Also sony just release a new firmware that answer you with this issue.. you can check my video

Thanks a lot , tomorrow I will be testing - doing long live stream on YouTube using Streamlabs, I always keep my phone under charger as I drive HGV sometimes for 3-4hrs non stop so battery would die.
It also going to be hot day here in UK and having the phone close to windscreen won't help - I know I shouldn't complain about overheating in such circumstances but my phone overheats even when taking photos although I have a feeling that after last system update its looking better , also as I mentioned before switching off object tracking has improved how smooth camera works using Streamlabs and Prism.
I'm considering buying a cooler for my phone too.
I will post my report tomorrow of how it went.
Many thanks

I found the future now in Game Enhancer app, you can power it directly. Not sure how it will perform yet. Tomorrow will send my report.
I often run streaming app in the background and not sure if Game Enhancer will work that way. I run nav app (Sygic Truck).
Heat problem has gone down significantly for me after the latest update yesterday. Usually the phone got really warm even with me just browsing using Chrome or going through Facebook. Now even when playing ROK or Mobile Legends it doesn't get that warm.
