[Q] No usb connection, fast battery discharge. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I saw a lot thread about simular problems, biut nothing resolved my problem. So here it is.
Tried to connect my generic Galaxy S3 (no carrier) to my PC (and also my PC at work), with 3 different USB cables. As i connect, charge indicator worksand cahrges, but nothing else. No data connection, no driver istall attempt, no sign of connection on the notification bar. Tried going to download mode, and still not recognized by the PC. Drivers were uninstalled and reinstalled on both PC.
And to top of that. Battery drains faster then it charges. Only way to charge it is to shot the screen of. But it takes a lot of time to charge fully.
ROM: OmniROM 4.4.4, stock kernel, philz touch 6

[Q] Phone will not recognize USB/Charge

I am having a problem with my Galaxy S3 when plugged into USB. It wont recognize the USB connection via laptop or charge via laptop or Samsung charger. Tried three official Samsung cables and chargers, 2 computers, and still nothing. The only time it recognizes anything is when the phone is in Download Mode. In which I can restore firmware and everything else. However, no matter what firmware I put, it still will not recognized the USB or charge. If anybody has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
There are different drivers that need to be installed. As it recognizes the download mode seems like CDC driver is installed, but if you download kies, it should install all the necessary drivers automatically. Did you try it with a different computer? If this doesn't help then your last option is to factory reset.
Hope this helps

Downloaded Kies. Has all the correct drivers. Tried two different computers. Have two Galaxy S3's, swapped out batteries. Both batteries are good in one phone. The other phone just wont recognize USB or charge in any situation. Factory reset it 3 times. Cleared everything off the phone. Didnt change anything. Factory ROM no kernel hacks or anything. Cables are genuine Samsung that came with the phone. Used mine and my friend's cable for his S3. When you plug the phone in when the power is off, u can see the battery, but then the screen goes black and doesnt charged. Also we charged up both batteries fully using one good S3 proving both batteries are good. Im out of ideas..Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it!!

Well if you say, that you did a full wipe, just curious that after factory reset did you restored it from a backup or started new. I recommend start new. Even if this doesn't help than it definitely seems a hardware problem. Get it checked.
Just wanted to share. I had a Iphone 4s and suddenly it stopped charging through a wall charger and used to charge through a usb, after numerous restores I got it checked and there seems the problem.

I have the exact same problem on my note 2, have been searching everywhere but cant seem to find an answer.
First of all hello xda, long time reader, first time poster.
I know it's been a long time since the last post, but instead of starting a new thread i suppose it's better to post here.
I got the same problem a few weeks ago and tried everything software-wise and still nothing. I noticed that when i turn my phone on i get a notification "USB connector connected" which leads me to believe that something is keeping the connector busy and unable to charge/connect exept when in d/l mode. Has anyone found a fix for this yet? I'd like to try and fix it myself before taking it in for repair.

I have exact same problem. Seemed to occur out of the blue. I took it off the car charger and everything appeared as normal until the next day I go to charge it with wall charger and no response, except for the grey battery image appearing for 2 seconds when and only when powered off and plugging in the charger. Tried many cables/chargers to no avail. There is also no response connecting to a PC, when the phone is on.
For the moment I can charge the battery(s) with an external charger and still use my phone.
I made a simple USB cable current monitor once to measure current consumption of portable devices. Just a 0.1ohm resistor in series with the USB V_BUS (+5V) pin. Since this fault occurred, the V_BUS pin current after plugging in the charger, starts off 250mA for few seconds while the grey battery image appears then the phone shuts down with a 5mA residual current. Clearly the battery is not being charged. Previous to the fault, V_BUS current during full charge is around 950mA. I'm sure its a hardware problem.

Help, usb connection problems.

About a couple of weeks ago my battery started charging to over-voltage, nothing unusualy that I recall happend there. Anyway he started overcharging and keep showing that he is charging even after unplugged. He charges up to 4.2~ volt which is way over 3.7 wherehe should be.
Anyways I've tried to calibrate the battery so I rooted the phone but no luck. So I tried to move the files from the phone in case I'll have to give it back to a shop to fix it ( which I would prefer not to do) so I discovered the phone doesn't see the computer. It starts charging and in download mode they see each other perfect but in normal conditions no way.
I've tried to reinstall drivers and plug with different cables and different computers but no luck. Anything I can do that I haven't tried yet to make him see the computer?

[Q] Please help. USB fried?

Ive tried searching everywhere on here but cant find anything concrete. Hopefully you can help me out
Verizon - Samsung sch-i500 fascinate.
It has been running Dirty Unicorn. Its the only one that's lasted for more than a month. All of a sudden the other day it started having problems.
The phone with battery in and just power button keeps putting into Download Mode. The only way to remedy it it to hook it up to computer with USB. While phone in hooked up it charges and everything is fine. The moment i pull the USB cord off it gets super sluggish like 50 mhz cpu or something. Then after about 3 minutes it crashes to black screen and i have to reboot it with the battery and usb hooked up. USB & Battery in pressing p. button it will boot up perfect and run again until i pull the usb. Also when rebooting with the p.button only and USB/Batt combo the first thing that shows up is a charging battery for 5 seconds then it reboots automatically into Recovery. Then I select reboot system and thats when everything works. Ive tried recovering OS and even tried different recovery flashes with Rom Manager.
USB debugging is on although the icon isn't there when cable up. Phone will charge.
I tried doing ODIN to reformat but ODIN wil never connect to it. I'm running the Samsung Driver that worked before. (Tried uninstalling and reinstall)
This leads me to believe its a USB issue somehow. That's why I'm here.
I just want this thing to work without being hooked up to USB.

Android mobile only charging when switched off

Hello!
In advance: I've a "Cubot X9" Smartphone - but the error exists for many smartphones of nearly all brands when you Google. That is why I ask here, I hope, this is correct. Maybe someone has a solution...
As I said, I've a Cubot X9 Smartphone. Since the day before yesterday I have the problem, that it is not possible to charge the phone when it is powerd on. When I power the phone off and plug the charger in, the phone starts charging and the charging LED and Symbol on the Screen lights up.
When I switch it on, the charging immetiatly stops.
I verified the phenomenon with a USB amere meter: When the phone is switched off an I plug the charger in, the current goes up and the phone is really charging. When the phone is switched on and I plug the charger in, the current stays at 0.000A and the phone is really not charging!
I also tried charging in TWRP - there is no charging either.
Another problem is, that the phone is not recognised by the computer. No error message, nothing. It seems, as if the USB port is switched off completly!
I found out, that there are many many phone with this Problem (SGS3, Google Nexus, HTC, ...) but there is never a solution. The problem is always the same: Only charging when switched off and no Connection to the PC.
Do you have an idea?
I already tried to:
- clean the USB-Port from dust
- changing the cable and the charger - I tried about 10 different ones
- disconnecting the battery (I opened the phone for that)
- clean and whiped everything (Data, Cache, System, SD) - although in TWRP and in Android
- flashing a new OS (Cynogen 13 instead of Android 4.4.4 stock)
The Problem still exist! I already thought about changing the battery to a new one. But the phone still last longer than one day, there is no Change in running time...
Is it possible, that the USB-port is damaged? Maybe the Pins for + and - are ok and the phone is charging when powered off. And when it is powered on, the data Pins are also "checked" for a connection - and because they are defective, the connection is not recognised and the phone does not start to charge?
I really like the phone and don't want to buy a new one, because the cameras are masked for security reasons and it is really difficult to get a new one sealed...
Thanks a lot for your help!

Won't turn off and other issues

Hi,
long story short: I connected my Z5C to a bad (apparently, I don't want to test ) charger and now I have some strange issues. Is there any change that my h/w isn't fried?
Full story: As I said I connected my Z5C (newest CyanogenMod provided here) to a charger and it instantly did a hard reset. Afterwards it did turn on and continued to work for some time. As I was on the road at that time I could not charge it elsewhere and later that day it ran out of power. When I tried to charge it with a known good charger some days later, it did not boot. I suspect the boot process to healthd or whatever draws this cool animation takes more power than my working but small charger provided.
It did charge at my laptop, especially when I put it into fastboot mode.
Now thats where I am stuck; the phone won't turn off completely and keeps rebooting when I turn it off (via os menu or hard reset, no chance).
I can charge it after it runs out of power (managed to charge to 100%), but it won't charge if I unplug and replug it. It is not recognised by a pc after I reconnect it one or two times (checked with device manager and lsusb), only chance to get to fastboot or flash mode again is drain the battery to 0%. It does show a loading animation and I can boot into android from there. Battery drain in Android seems to be a little higher than usual (100 to 0 after 2 1/2 days of pure standby without any radio stuff on).
I have already reflashed the original Sony firmware and erased everything that came to my mind (cache, data....).
Any hope that I did not kill some piece of hardware?
Thanks for your answers, any help appreciated
tell me more about your z5c's software, why you mentioned Cynogenmod? did you flash it with cynogenmod?
seems to me that z5c was running on custom rom and did not support fast chargers and bricked your device!
if that so, try flashing it using flashtool with original stockrom.
i don't wana go in to details however there is possiblity that battery.sys file is corrupt and atleast I was never able to fix my LT18i when it got bricked and battery status use to become zero in 2 seconds and android keep rebooting, later it got silent for good! no charge no nothing and i still have the device sitting. I was running it on coconut (cynogenmod) when all this happened!
Thanks for your reply.
The charger was no kind fast charger, just a common 12V to USB adapter with an output of 800mA (when it worked). I was running CM 13 when I connected it to the bad charger, but as I mentioned I have since then reflashed it with Stock ROM. No real improvement.
I have continued trying and I found out that the device seems to believe it is still connected via usb.
Code:
cat /sys/class/power_supply/usb/present
gives me "1" with nothing connected, can you check if this is normal?
The file is -rw-r-- r--, would changing its value change anything or is it just some kernel thing (can't check, don't have root permissions now as I flashed Stock ROM)?
Also after I charged it on my PC today it still shows me the notifications for USB connection and adb (I can add a screenshot if necessary), also looks like it still believes to be connected.
It seems I found the solution: I was playing a bit with a USB-OTG adapter (the ones to connect regular usb devices like keyboards or storage to your phone). After I connected a USB keyboard I tried (just for fun) if the Linux "Magic" SysRq hotkeys were enabled. So I did press Alt-Print-o, which is the Linux hotkey for "turn off now". It did not turn off, it also stayed off (no instant reboot). After I started the phone again it also properly turned off via the power menu!
I will have to test whether the charging issues are fixed, too, but as far as I can tell the problem seemed to be something software-related
Sadly did not work for long. I think I will go for official repair, think this is still cheaper than buying a new phone (after completely killing it with some DIY "repair" attempt). This annoying brick simply does not turn off, no matter what I do (apart from draining battery to 0%). Guess its my fault, still to afraid to try that broken charger again.
