whats happened with development?! - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

i think me, like many others, are checking these forums frequently to see if any updates or news to the roms for HDX, especially since the last waves of rooting happening all the way to newest OTA update, however the heat has seemingly died off with the hopes of updates, and that glimmer of hope with bootloader unlock that we all waiting for. I understand as long as this doesn't happen we are still limited to the Amazon kernel.
im not a developer but a savvy user like many others so im in no position to measure the difficulty of creating updates for the device, however with the floodgate opened before i was really hoping for lots of new roms and updates to existing, coupled with powerful hardware at cheap prices, and what seems to be wide audience, but didnt seem to be the case.
does anyone think there's any hope left for this device? should we just jump on to Tegra K1 bandwagon soon?

Last I saw the had unlocked the boot loader but was working more kinks and gonna charge for it. That was like 3xweeks or more ago. Who knows.

Yeah, that's what I last saw too. I think they're charging because they don't want Amazon to find out or something.

Yeah, not only does it delay Amazon's ability to patch the hole, but it also helps the developers of the exploit earn the money they deserve. I'm just currently concerned after that argument in the fire phone thread they may not be releasing the exploit due to legal reasons, which is bothersome.

I don't know but it really sucks and I also know this thread is not development related. As far as being in the development section I mean.

im sorry but thats a sorry excuse. theyre gonna charge $25 so that a multi billion dollar company cant find out? if it slows them down itll slow them down for a couple of hours and thats it.
lets be realist... theyre charging so that they can profit. theres nothing wrong with that and i dont have a problem with it but its a lil insulting if they expect us to believe that

I check every couple of weeks or so, but honestly just running the xpose framework module makes me happy. The only thing I was missing was the play store, and it allows me to have that. The Fire user interface has actually grown on me.

The argument in that thread about whether bootloader unlocking is legal in the US or not is not even touching on the real issue. First, bootloader unlocking IS legal. Second, what is not legal though is hacking a device put out by a company and then charging other people and making money off of your exploit. And even if it were legal, it is against XDA TOS for members to charge for things like ROMs, kernel, bootloader unlock, etc. We can donate sure, but specifically charging people for access is a no-no.
Even still, Id pay for it. I really want to see some real development going on for this tablet. The Thor and Appolo gapps ROMs are great, but it would be nice to have a true AOSP build working.

lol

My HDX is still in the mail and I check here everyday. I hope the unlock sees the light of day before the HDX becomes obsolete eventually.

i dont have high hopes at this rate, this device target audience is opposite of most android users in the sense they're not the type to tinker with the software
its not like a Nexus device where most of the users going for it are expected with rooting and roms, i cant blame them, even the rooting process and safestraping rom slots is not common for android devices

It has been a bitter roller coaster ride I just want my unlock and fastboot stuff so I can unlock, archive the rest, and be on the next device. Uhg and I am sorry but this forum has given me fantasies such as hoping the next update will come with a choke Bart emoji on my keyboard;-p lmao only because of the face palming is starting to leave a mark ; (

Hi hashcode. Any info you can feed us would be appreciAted. I understand things are hush hush for numerous reasons but people here are starting to lose interest in our device and the longer we wait for a unlock the more talent we lose and, undoubtedly, potential donaters.
Your teasing and previous posts show u have some inside knowledge of the unlock. Any info would be great but specificAlly what is the snag the devs have run into? And I know it's rude to ask but how much longer are we lookin at for release?
I know u dint owe us anything but we thank u for ur support.

I'd really like to participate in today's Fire Sale (pun intended), but I'm not keen on getting a device that can't be unlocked. Decisions, decisions...

Was rooting worth it?

For the whole month of waiting for S-off the only thing that was going on in here was people complaing and bashing other people. Well now that we have S-off it seems every thread is someone having problems with there phone after they rooted it. It seems to me this is why sprint and htc dont want us toying with these phones. Rooting a phone is suppose to make it better correct? It seeme to me its making the phones worst

I dunno, the "no calls/txt/data" is a problem that is hit-or-miss when you do a hands-free-activation....root or not. It happened to me, took me under 2 minutes to have fixed by Sprint, who did it happily.
People losing 4G? I don't think this network is robust enough to blame that on root...and even if that is in an area with a rock solid 4G signal I still think there may be some user intervention at play that isn't the fault of getting s-off all by it self.
The funky "turning on, or not, or plugged in, or not, or take out battery, or sdcard, or both, or not" problems were there from the begining...I used to think it was only certain phones, but, I think it's all phones in certain conditions. Being s-off and rooted gives us the ability to put the phone into more conditions where that may or may not happen.
...and as far as battery performance is concerned it's nearly impossible to prove that it ISN'T user/application related. I'm not saying it definitely IS their fault, but, it's impossible to prove that...so many conditions vary for your phone so frequently every day even if yours do not that battery life claims are nearly impossible to prove and impossible to refute based on any changed variable all by itself....not to mention a near 100% chance of someone else reporting the exact opposite condition.
...aside from my data going slow after hands-free-activation (which is fixed in 2 minutes) I have experienced none of these problems after rooting...okay, I take that back, I have experienced the "sometimes it turns on while plugged in, sometimes it doesn't"...but, it did that before s-off/root as well.
...and let's not forget that the s-off hack likely has nothing to do with these issues. I have the eng hboot...non-hacked. Just the way god intended. If it is from anything it would be from the rooting of the ROM, which I still doubt.
Honestly, compared to the initial period after the s-off/root exploits releases for other devices this doesn't seem out of the ordinary at all...and no offense meant, but, are you new to this?
EDIT: Oh yeah, to answer your question....yes, s-off and rooting were VERY worth it to me. Now bring on the AOSP
No way. I hate having a better phone

Oh, I dont have any insurance on my new 3D phone.
Two words: User error. The problems you see are because people do not know what they are doing. Simple as that. Rooting your phone does nothing but give you permission to be able to do what you want to do with "your" phone.

Yeah, that's a really good point. I think that Sprint in general has probably been taking in a lot of new users, likely mostly smartphone users, because of the unlimited data thing...and the fact that Sprint actually has the most compelling collection of smartphones right this second IMHO. Sadly I'm thinking about jumping ship since this signal is just useless to me in most places now, and that's to say nothing of the over-loaded network.
...not to mention the droves of E4G defectors who were following the developers, and the larger and more frequent droves of defectors from every phone from the last generation that want the developer support that the E4G had but they definitely did not see...and then there are all of the people who finally got off of their contract from Heros and Moments from when they were still hot items....
...so, yeah, there is just so many goddamned people in here that I'd be surprised if there weren't more complaints on average. Contrast this to the NookColor forum where there are far more actual tricky problems but nobody blames the root method for them missing a step or not understanding a process...not to mention how god damned civil it is around there.

To me it was worth it. However I've noticed many issues are because folks don't read, can't follow instructions, make changes without knowing WHAT they are doing.
Sorry but if you don't know what changes you're making, what issues they cause, how to fix, how to undo what you screwed up, then they shouldn't be rooting, flashing and changing settings.
By "you" I don't necessarily mean you, but more of a "folks in general".

[Q] [Suggestion] Donate to Developer who'll unlock the RAZR's Bootloader

Hey there, I'm just wondering why there is no idea like this anywhere...
What would be if all owners of a MOTO RAZR will donate some money into a pot on XDA or somewhere else. The first developer who'll get this device unlocked, will get this whole pot...
I mean, for any developer who isn't interested in unlocking the RAZR will perhaps be interested...
Okay, someone is already working on a Bootloader bypass, but in my opinion it would be better to get another competitor, so perhaps the unlocking will get faster.
What do you think about?
How much would you donate for an unlocked bootloader?
I would pay 20€ for an unlocked bootloader...
This...

Exactly... I was one of those standing on his side and trusting that what he says is real but I am slowly changing my mind... If his unlock is real, I don't understand why he don't want to share his work with the other developers to speed up the development - it simply stinks..
I have no problem to pay him for the working unlock if he is keeping his secret for that reason but at this moment he has a free razr and we have absolutely nothing (except 2 posts in the thread) - no proof, no video, nothing....
Anyway - I am definitely FOR donating money for a developer who unlocks the bootloader if there is no unlock made by motorola after the official ics is released...
I for one will donate $50. Gentleman's word.

Can you seriously stop romdroid. you're annoying - trolling every single thread that mentions his name, posting on every single page, as if your opinion will have a greater effect on people if they read it every half an hour. Wow.
MAYBE BEFORE YOU TRY AND SLANDER SOMEONE, LOOK AT THE WORK THEY'VE ALREADY DONE.
Look at how Kholk has already released so much. He leaked the GSM ICS. His team made the Arctic ROM. He made WebtopMOD. Countless kernels for countless devices.
http://pastebin.com/vuVfaQ7U should be a big one. You can see the bypassed bootloader at work.
Maybe you should take a look at mbm who had already done substantial work on the Bionic's kexec.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1466402.html
He also said back in January that progress would be a lot faster if someone else could help him out or he got another phone. Else he'd need a lot of time. Now kholk is helping him out. Do the math.

If you can't take a sip of the true tea and put a sock in it until you hear from them, then I suggest you just leave the forums in the mean time and monitor Android Police for a little bit waiting for news. We don't need negative nancies like you pissing the few Devs that actually do work for our phones off. GOOD DAY.

I truly don't get some people on xda..... why do people demand when they don't know how much work it actually takes .... If you're so impatient and wouldn't believe until you see it romdroid and anyone else why don't you go learn some programming then try do what these devs are doing..... or you can donate to them so they can work more as this is not their life(they have jobs,family...etc) They are people afterall like you. It's a hobby for most devs...... If not wait patiently like everyone else and be grateful a site like xda exist with awesome devs and roms, etc..... If not stick to stock and crappy motorola support. You can just have an android phone like most people and not know a site like xda exist or what rooting is..... afterall you made a choice to be on xda so stick to the rules(not all are written)......
My opinion but seriously i think you're the one in need of the chill pill here.....
I can understand the rage and the excitation of waiting for so much time. I've felt the same on my old HD2 times.
Now, as a developer, I can understand why no developer wants to talk with the mass or say anything about his upcoming work.
Guys, I don't wanna talk like a badass, and I'll continue to write my posts like I've always did since I've started here as a normal user (yeah, years ago I was a total n00b): give yourself more selfcontrol. I've learnt from my errors in the past when doing almost the same: do the same!
Instead of hitting the "Thanks" button, I'd like to say that here.
Thanks [TSON] and everyone else trying to calm down the users here: like you said in other posts, the only results the people can have insulting and/or misrespecting the developers are delays or worst.
P.S.: The file linked by cgomezparra isn't for the RAZR!

Whats wrong with you? I have never pissed anyone, I just said the truth. Nobody from us can unlock the bootloader because it is a hardware problem. It just can be bypassed or Moto can unlock it. The bootloader's signature is encrypted and it would be very difficult to decrypt. But bypassing the bootloader is another thing which is possible.
I have never doubted on the Eternity Project's work, you've just asserted that. If you can't accept the opinion of other people maybe then you should leave the forums and take the “chill pill“ by yourself. Good day!

Why There Is No Development?!

This is just sad!!!
LG makes awesome devices, the G2 is one of the best devices available now, great hardware, great screen yet no devs or users buy it. I know its like the chicken and the egg, but still, its wired not a lot of people buy it.
HTC has S-OFF and locked bootloader, Samsung also has now that stup!d KNOX, Sony and Moto makes pretty bad devices, why devs don't develop for LG devices?!?! Why?!?!
Because no one has unlocked the G2 bootloader.
Also, it is not a popular phone.

I'm talking about LG in general. The Optimus G doesn't have a lot of roms.
Their phones are not popular, but they are awesome phones!
This thread was with rhetorical questions, I know this is the situation and all that, I wanted to create a discussion about this subject
Is there anyone actively looking for exploits in our bootloader?
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I do think I heard some people on the G2 IRC (freenode #lg-g2) are attempting, but I am not certain if this is true.
Anyhoo, no progress has been made currently.
Ha... because its been out for just over a week. AND in the first week we already have root.

Go Bucks!!!!
Everyone that's demanding development/boot loader unlock...first its only been a week since the phone was released...what did you expect every dev to go out and buy a g2...next why don't you go try to learn all the complexities that are involved in the process...just cause there's no news been made public doesn't mean things aren't being worked on. The appropriate individuals will say something when the time is right..whenever the exploit/exploits are done is when they're done...don't rush our devs, make stupid posts, and pointless threads as that will just piss some of them off...that being said things are in the works, just be patient.

Speaking of the bootloader, is there a button combo that can be used to access it? Or is there no such option on this phone. This is my first LG device so I'm feeling a bit like a fish out of water.

I suspect that Development will come once ppl realize the Note 3 is gonna be locked down pretty hard (might take as long as the first OTA to kill any exploits like the S4). Just give it time.. VZN ppl will want a Nexus 5 like device and the LG G2 will be the closest thing hardware wise to it. Just don't expect crazy dev like a flagship Samsung device or the Moto X but there should be some in the near future.

+1. If nobody knew any better they would believe it was a Nexus 5 just from looking at screen, and the LG emblem. Oh yeah, the N5 is shipping with the same hardware...hmm um Verizon LG N5 *cough cough G2*. Development will come and when it does just root. CM. And Verizon N5 . Clearly LG is learning from their Google Nexus 4 and thats what we see in the G2, lets see the difference when the N5 comes out i bet they will be virtually identical, aesthetics and hardware wise, obviously not the software.

The closest I know, and I dont think it's bootloader, is Volume up and plugging in USB. It brings up a download/firmware upgrade screen, which is also where you can see the Rooted boot flag displayed.
There mere fact that we have root (AND got rid of carrier ID) is indicative that development is happening.
Be patient folks

Yeah that's all I've found so far too. Well that and I did stumble on our hidden diagnostics screen. (##228378 in dialer). There is a field test mode there. Doubt it'll come into play for anything but never know I guess.
You know why there's no one developing on LG phones? Because people $hitting on LG phones like it's their job. Just look at the new arstechnica review of the G2. They made it sound like it's the worst phone ever made.

The Samsung fanboy is strong in that one. He completely blew things out of proportion, like come on, a font bug?! Then he left out how the camera was, just pointing out he got a bad auto image once. Then you read the S4 review and its like God handed it to him himself

I hate to bust people's bubble but I've been around Android and its development community (XDA) a long time and from my experience I'm going to say once a phone lacks any development at the beginning, it usually stays that way to the bitter end. Development won't magically just pick up.
It's just an unfortunate part of being in a crowded phone market with HTC, Samsung and even Sony. Developers rather develop for the more popular headsets and the LG will be on the outside looking in.
I'm not going to sugar coat this, if you bought this phone for development I suggest you return it while you have a return window, cause development....it's not going to happen.
If you fell in love with the G2 phone I suggest you wait for the Nexus version of it and then you're going to have a real development community.

John Snow, I didnt know you had a computer in the North? There are several developers who are trying/finding the best way to unlock the bootloader, what exactly did you expect the developers to do within a week without an unlocked bootloader? Yes, some developers go for only the big devices, and guess what, this is one. You seem to know nothing about anything around here, so dont go spreading lies.

Extremely frustrating

Little by little, Android is becoming iOS. Starting to get very annoyed with the limitations in recent updates. First we get permalocked if we accepted 4.3 OTA update. Now I found out in 4.4, Google has prevented write access to external storage?! And there's no way around it without root? SIGH. Not not only can I not root my phone, but I can't even write to my SD card without plugging it into my PC? What's next, take away our widgets and ability to change launcher/interface? What happened to the old philosophy of Android? It's OUR devices and we should be able to do what we damn well please with them.
I and many others share your frustration!!

That's not good enough. Sure for devices like the Note 2 it would allow a locked phone to become unlocked at any time. But what about devices that never got unlocked like the Note 3 and other future devices? This doesn't resolve their situations.
Also, yes I agree with you OP. I refuse to "upgrade" from this phone to anything else any time soon considering the way these phones are turning into locked up garbage. I'm so grateful for all the work modders and hackers managed to do with this device which allows me to run something as amazing as Cyanogenmod 11 right now. I saw what the stock 4.3+ ROM's look like, yuck. Imagining being stuck with that "forever" is like a nightmare only I'm awake.
Anyways there really is no better alternative to Android at the moment or foreseeable future. If you want a smartphone with even a hint of customizability then Android's your only option.
You are not seeing the big picture. If you want phones that you can hack away at and are not secure there are plenty out there. Verizon and AT&T teaming up with Samsung have gone after large military and commercial contracts with these phones. Therefore they have made efforts to make them as secure as possible. You can thank all the hackers in the world pulling email and banking information off your phones for that. And you probably can throw in thanks for the locked bootloader to all those that returned their bricked phones under warranty.
As I said, you have choices, Nexus, HTC, developer's editions....etc. You just need to do a little research before buying.
Agreed for many of the UI changes. But I understand. They have to appeal to Ma and Pa Kettle.
Hopefully at some point they will embrace custom ROMs with a special model like Linkysy did with their L model. But I'm guessing not.

Assuming I lived and traveled exclusively in areas where one of those carriers had a decent signal, that could be a good approach. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Any news on Root?

I see other carriers have been able to gain root access. I am wondering if anyone is working in a root?? Would love to donate for a root + wifi tether abilty (heck, even just root). Maybe us Sprint users can get a "bounty" going. I cant be the only one wanting root access and to able to take advantage of thesr amazing Spark speeds.
From what I know the reason sprint doesn't have root with the others is because it was given an update the other carriers never implanted.

LG won't be unlocking the bootloader anytime soon. Go read the thread in the main G3 forum for the discussion.
MY understanding is that the reason the LS990 doesn't take the same root exploit as the other variants is that the directory structure is different so the vulnerability doesn't exist as it does on the others. Whether that is due to an update (that must have happened at manufacture as it was different on launch day) I can't say. And there may be other reasons, but that is the one I know about.
There is at least one method that is pending release, but the most optimistic date we have is mid-August, and my guess is even later owing to some bad eggs stirring the pot.
The answer to this question, every time somebody starts a thread like this, is WE DON'T KNOW when we'll get root, but we PROBABLY will and all we can do is WAIT. It's not for lack of interest that we're stuck waiting, so pounding on the door won't get it open any sooner.
Final thought: This forum will explode with threads all saying the same thing when a method is released, so you won't miss it.

There is more to the work of releasing a root then being stingy. If people like you keep trying to turn it around like you are entitled to the work of others, it will only keep you waiting longer. So Stop it!
There are a ton of reasons not to release it even if Root is possible, the actual process of Rooting the device may be a technical process that 90% of users would screw up and end up blaming the creator for.

First, I don't think I am entitled to anything. I am just making it known that it is available and has been confirmed available, but someone is holding out. I didn't find him, somebody else posted about him, I just contacted him to get info. Honestly, I wouldn't pay 50 bucks even if I was local to him, I don't have that kind of money to spend on something like that, but he seemed genuine in his goals and his reasoning.
Anyway, the point is, let's not get at each other about being patient or acting entitled or whatever. We're all in the same boat. We're all waiting patiently (or impatiently, but it makes no difference). We can't sweet talk the devs who have the means and the knowledge, and we certainly can't manipulate or intimidate them into moving any more quickly than they wish. Heck, jcase is in Vegas with his family and was laid up with a fever and a sore throat to boot, and he's still been working (on other devices, but still). He's not just sitting at his desk reading these threads with his fingers tented and an evil grin. It's just not at the top of anybody's to-do list. We just have to trust that it's moving up every day.
