Tmobile to start throttling users who use p2p sharing.! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

Bad news for some of us. If you have the unlimited 4g Lte plan. You will be throttled if you use it for p2p sharing. Like utorrent or other torrent apps. Really Pisses me off. Why do I pay over $100 a month? I think I am being throttled already. My service has been on Edge for like 2 days. should be able to use the data for what ever I want. What do you guys think? I have to say i'm on your side with this one.
Why would i pay the extra money for unlimited data if i'm not going to use it for what I want it for? Luckily, i'm grandfathered into an older plan where this doesn't cover so hopefully i won't be throttled.

Says old grandfather plan will also be throttled. Read the article!
Killing Aliens with my S5!

When you get throttled they don't drop you off lte onto edge. You will still be on lte it's just slow. Usually around 128k is my experience.
I don't quite agree with it. You buy a car your free to do with it what you want. What about people who abuse unlimited messages? Do they get throttled?
If you read the fine print you agreed to when you signed up though, I'm sure something about p2p is in there.

A Car and unlimited data is completely different. Lol it says unlimited so that's what I should get. Slowing down is one thing but they slow it down so much that Web pages and games won't even work. Bs

Lol. Your linked article says nothing about grandfathered plans. The article i read says nothing about them either. Only states users who have the 70 and 80 dollar Simple plan are getting throttled due to an update in the Terms and Conditions those users signed as per their contract.

how can they detect if you're using p2p? or are they going to look at those that have 100's of gb's of data usage.

I think that is is such BS! I was just kicked off is Sprint's "unlimited data plan" for the same thing. I was completely kicked from the carrier after 10 YRS of loyal service. I have had Tmo for a month now was glad I made the switch! "Was" being the key word! Sprint data speeds like driving backwards on the autobahn in comparison! I there a way to go download in some sort of stealth mode? I would be so sad the go slow again....

It's called VPN.

Most likely their looking at the trackers your using, same way ISP's are now blocking sites like piratebay and others. Just use a torrent site that offers a Secure SSL tracker connection like IPTorrents (though you have to be VIP) and you should be just fine.

I can see how this sucks for a lot of users that use their phone for most of their internet service . I decided to switch to the $50 1GB plan and just get Charter internet for my home and its only $30 a month and its a 100 Mbps connection . I just do my P2P from my home internet . I had a feeling this was coming too . T-Mobile struck out with this one . Someone will come up with a work around . VPN should suffice

Anyone who has hundreds of GB of data usage on LTE is completely abusing it and should be dropped altogether. Come on... Use some common sense. If everyone did that, they'd have to charge us a couple thousand bucks a month each, and I don't want to pay for your software pirating over mobile.

I'm not sure what would be considered abuse, but I was using around 15-20 gb/month. Some p2p and a good amount of stuff from here on XDA. Doesn't seem like that much when i read about other people's usage.

They track p2p usage probably using Sandvine. This was a big controversy a while back with Comcast throttling Bittorent users.

I am a member of iptorrents though torrentleech also uses SSL. I cant really go giving out invites as you only get a certain amount and their really tough to come by, I think I have 2 or left total.

Thinking of switching sprint to verizon...

I have been with sprint since 1999.
I am finally fed up with abysmally slow data speeds. .010 up and down. On my 3rd 4g phone and still no 4g, even paying the extra $10 a month for "premium" data. I think the $10 is just to make the little icon turn on on the phone, and thats it.
I was looking at verizon. Does anyone recommend any phones or plans?
I hear great things, except for the data cap.
But I am willing to suffer the data cap. Even though I have an unlimited data plan now, I still would be nice to have DATA.
Sprint needs to update their network from smoke signals to dial up speed. I hear thunderbolt is the phone to get? Is it rootable? Can you tether on verizon?

yeah, like last year.
IF you're going to switch, get the Galaxy Nexus. otherwise.. you can wait for sprint's nexus.
I am thinking of doing the exact same thing. Only problem I have is I am still in contract until the end of this year. I have a co-worker who owns the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus and it is VERY nice. I have also heard good things about the Moto Razr. Verizon is currently offering their doubling their caps on data. I think the 2gb is now 4gb until Jan. 15th but double check.
It is difficult to switch to Verizon because it costs around $40 more per month but I feel like I am paying $100 too much per month with Sprint. The data speeds are horrific. I get no more than 300kbps down and my co-worker gets 1.5meg on Verizon 3g and at LEAST 8megs on Verizon LTE. It is embarrassing and extremely annoying how slow my data is.
Anyway...good luck to you on your switch. I will make the switch at the end of this year.
Switch if you need to switch, but before try asking some knowledgeable sprint employees about any planned network improvements in your area, because if you leave and then the forever promised upgrades start really happening you might be regretting your decision
But then again if you got the cake go head and switch

How do you find someone knowledgeable at Sprint? I cannot find anyone dialing the customer service number and tech numbers that can give any definitive info on tower upgrades.
Trying not to be sarcastic.
I switched one month ago to Verizon after being with Sprint for 9 years. Even though I have a data cap and my bill is about 30 bucks higher. I am so glad I did. I didn't realize how bad sprints data service was until switching. Sure the price is a bit higher, but I am ok with it since I actually have 4g.
I did go with the Thunderbolt even though in cell phone age it is old. The reason, because it is rootable. I had a hard time not going with the Rezound because it was pretty slick, but it's only temproot capable. If you couldn't tell, I prefer HTC...
Anyways, Verizon has a deal online you can get double the data for the same price. So I have 22 gigs of data to use. I live in the country and have no other source of highspeed internet than my phone. While using tethering, using my xbox360, youtube, and netflix I have only hit 12 gigs so far... Of course 8 gigs of that was in one weeks time.
If you don't want to sign up online. Go to a retail store and show them that you can get double data by buying online and they should be able to hook you up with the same deal. That is what I did without any problems. They even matched the price of the Thunderbolt to what it was going for online with contract.
Hurry up and switch if you are... Verizon has 4gb of data for the same price until the 15th... just a suggestion.

I switched to Verizon after having sprint for over 4 years. I got the galaxy nexus. There's a loophole to get unlimited data, but that might be closed. There's a thread in the rezound forums about it. I had originally got the 10 gig plan but got unlimited data using the loophole. With my discounts its actually cheaper than what I was paying on sprint and I actually have awesome data speeds on top of 4g.

I was thinking about switching to Verizon but I don't know yet, I'm still on the fence. I kind of want to wait and see how Sprint's LTE do first.
i am currently on two lines one with sprint and the other with verizon.
i took over another person's old unlimited plan so there's no way verizon will drop my plan. I am not too sure how verizon will react to all the people using the loophole.
450mins unlim data iphone 4 32gb right now and they upgraded the line early for free! i have a 4s getting ready to be sold online. i havent really been able to use data much. but verizon is definitely alot faster thats for sure.
i also have sero premium. using the evo 3d. is it true i can use the marqueee and not pay the additional 10 bucks a month?
No advice here but let us know how it is over there

sad thing is, alot of people seem to be on the same line of thought, used to be that you could justify the crappy signal cause you were paying 50-75 less than any other carrier. Now they just keep closing that price gap making it harder to stay with it. Myself, I'm about ready to take my 4 lines to att or vzn. if I lower my minutes (which I never use) I can actually get it cheaper.

Dude. Make the switch. I always thought I couldn't justify paying more for less perks than I had with Sprint. The coverage and data speeds are worth every penny. To my surprise I actually pay less with my employer discounts. I had every intention to go into Verizon paying more though.
The difference is night and day.

I hear ya.. I probably should. I'm just afraid of a whole new set of issues when switching. I've read a good share of their horror stories too, I may try a single line and carry that around and see how it does.
I've been with Sprint for >10 years now, mainly because it was the best overall deal around. However, lately they have been getting rid of the perks that made them a better choice for me over Verizon or AT&T. I have been toying with the idea of moving my 3 lines over to Verizon, actually visited a Verizon store over the xmas break. Now I hear that Sprint is cancelling their employee discount on all lines except the primary line and that has done if for me. Feb 1 I am going to fight to get out of my contract based on the "adverse material change to my contract" and switch to Verizon. If Sprint is going to charge me as much as Verizon and AT&T then they need to provide the same level of service as the others. My 150kbs speeds are a joke, especially when I'm paying (and have been for going on 2 years now) a $10 surcharge for "premium data".

Sprint reportedly cancelling its early upgrade program June 1st

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/sprint-cancelling-early-upgrades/
(memo is in the link above)
Like dominoes, Sprint's consumer-friendly policies continue to fall one at a time. Citing "high costs," the Now Network will begin discontinuing its practice of allowing customers to upgrade their phone 10-14 days prior to the official date of eligibility. According to the memo leaked by TechnoBuffalo, the program will cease to exist as of June 1st. It sounds like this policy change is an unfortunate consequence of the company's large investments in iPhones and its still-dormant LTE network. It may not be enough to convince many Sprint customers to jump ship, but this isn't the first cost-cutting measure put forth by Dan Hesse's team -- and we have a hard time believing it will be the last. We've reached out to Sprint for official comment and will update you as soon as we have word.

not sure why this is that big of a deal? is that really that much of an incentive?
unless your early eligibility window directly coincided with a major phone release (like the iphone5 which i hear has the same cloaking capability as Predator and is run by cold fusion with a display that beams directly to your brain) and you HAVE to be the first one to get it...then who cares if you have to wait until you are actually eligible for the upgrade to get it??

Yes it will definitely happen at some point. everywhere the iPhone goes eliminates the "unlimited Data Plan".
Verizon today also said that they're no longer allowing people to be grandfathered in. So no unlimited for anyone.
But i agree, this isn't that big of news too me but it is somewhat heartbreaking to see. First they destroyed the Premiere Members plan and now this.

IMO that'd be their kiss of death. It's the ONLY advantage they have compared to ATT and VZ. With all the other niggling changes (the change in how discounts are applied, the change in how shared plans are accounted for, etc) they are barely ahead of VZ in price for me (4 4G phones - what where's 4g?? - and 1 basic phone, and i can get away with 4gb data most months no problem) and if the network doesn't get better, i'm gone, let alone how fast I'd bail if they limited their unlimited...

I still do not believe that iPhone has made connection slow for others and Sprint has said (if their truth to it or not) that iPhone has not slowed down data speeds for us other phones.
iPhone is not the problem, it's people who are with VZW who obviously don't mind paying a premiere price for their phone bills. Sprint is playing catch up with these other companies and becoming more and more of a elite company. no more of this VZW>ATT>SPRINT crap. they will be the 3 headed monsters in due time

True but reverse the question, does it hurt Sprint to keep something that small of a perk?
It probably cost more money to update the staff & the system on the few minutes they took to address it.

Very possible it will. I've read an article (PCWorld, I think it was) that explained it clearly. Each carrier purchases/rents a certain amount of data spectrum. Verizon and AT&T started throttling and limiting data because usage on their respective spectrums were getting close to the limit. NOW, taking that into consideration, Sprint very literally owns/rents half of the spectrum that Verizon and AT&T do. So, what does that tell you? Eventually, even though they are not ready to state it publicly, chances are Sprint will abandon unlimited data.

True story, sir.
The thing is that Sprint always releases their flagship HTC phone in about the middle of May. Many people's upgrade date is June 1st, so that 14 days allows people who want to upgrade have the ability too pre-order. Now I hope that Sprint and HTC work together and make their flagship phone released on June 1st.

Honestly guys do you really think the Iphone is what pulls in the data? I'll give you an example. With my evo 3D, I pulled in over 9GB's last month on 3G and a little 4G(no torrenting) but both of my sisters own the iphone and they used 4 GB's together on our shared plan. One is somewhat tech-savvy but is on it constantly while the other uses it mainly for phone and pandora. Most iphone users don't know how to rape the unlimited data plans like I do. It's only going to be unlimited for so long so why not use it up. You want to complain you should complain to the average user on this site. We are the people using up the data not most of the iphone users.

I'd rather not look at it as a "use as much as I can while it's still free" situation. If I need to download something significant, I'll use my home computer on broadband. I rarely download new ROMs directly with my phone. I'd rather not contribute to Sprint even having to consider throttling by only downloading what I need to with my phone so I can use more when I really have to.

sprint shouldn't consider throttling because people are downloading things with their phone, thats the whole point of havnig an unlimited data plan, to not have to nit pick when and which files to download
it'd be different if i was downloading movies to my phone, to then transfer to my computer instead of just using my computers broadband, but why wouldn't a user with unlimited data download a file through the phone, when the file is for the phone?
lets all stop streaming music also, i mean we could download it with our computers, then transfer it to our phones, then make a playlist, that'd save sprint from having to throttle!

the torrenting is what did you in my friend, i had a "test" month this month and manage to scrounge up about 6-7GB with nothing happening but this is all from youtube, google music, and large games downloads (nova 3)...and the deposit, well your suppose to get it back after a year i believe, but if you got terminated before then well....who knows, and lastly you can always just call sprint and ask for an esn check (just say you're buying it on ebay or something)
checkesnfree.com
and trhe phoen should be clean its only when the phone is lost/stolen or in use is it "bad"
Since sprint advertises unlimited data, I thought the only way they could terminate you (per the contract) is if:
1. excessive data roaming
2. tethering and not paying for that
3. being caught doing something illegal
Unless they can show that they terminated with cause (in writing per the contract you agreed to), than you should get your deposit back with no ETF.

you guys answered each others questions, lol
How much data did you use? I'm trying to get them to cancel me without having to pay an etf. I've used about 50 gigs already, but I think the problem with that is I have my phone torrenting while I sleep. I checked Sprint terms of service, they don't consider you an issue if you're not impacting other cusomters use of the service. I don't know how to become an issue through the day since I get crap service at work. (10-15 Kbps. BS)
moxiot, what was your data usage like. Sprint does have a redflag limit and last time I checked it was about 30GB.

What does torrenting have to do with "being caught doing something illegal"?
http://shop2.sprint.com/en/legal/legal_terms_privacy_popup.shtml?ECID=vanity:termsandconditions
Prohibited Network Uses. To ensure the activities of some users do not impair the ability of our customers to have access to reliable services provided at reasonable costs, you may not use our services in a manner that is unlawful, infringes on intellectual property rights, or harms or unduly interferes with the use of Sprint's network or systems. Sprint reserves the right, without notice or limitation, to limit data throughput speeds or quantities or to deny, terminate, end, modify, disconnect, or suspend service if an individual engages in any of the prohibited voice or data uses detailed below or if Sprint, in its sole discretion, determines action is necessary to protect its wireless networks from harm or degradation.
Examples of prohibited data uses: Sprint data services are provided solely for purposes of web surfing, sending and receiving email, photographs and other similar messaging activities, and the non-continuous streaming of videos, downloading of files or on line gaming. Our data services may not be used: (i) to generate excessive amounts of Internet traffic through the continuous, unattended streaming, downloading or uploading of videos or other files or to operate hosting services including, but not limited to, web or gaming hosting; (ii) to maintain continuous active network connections to the Internet such as through a web camera or machine-to-machine connections that do not involve active participation by a person; (iii) to disrupt email use by others using automated or manual routines, including, but not limited to "auto-responders" or cancel bots or other similar routines; (iv) to transmit or facilitate any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, telemarketing, promotional materials, "junk mail", unsolicited commercial or bulk email, or fax; (v) for activities adversely affecting the ability of other people or systems to use either Sprint's wireless services or other parties' Internet-based resources, including, but not limited to, "denial of service" (DoS) attacks against another network host or individual user; (vi) for an activity that connects any device to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for the purpose of transmitting wireless data over the network (unless customer is using a plan designated for such usage); or (vi) for any other reason that, in our sole discretion violates our policy of providing service for individual use. Unlimited Use Plans. If you subscribe to rate plans, services or features that are described as unlimited, you should be aware that such "unlimited" plans are subject to these Sprint Prohibited Network Uses.
--------------------------------------
the highlighted text is BS in my opinion, but can be used to justify getting rid of you for any reason. That being said, (depending on where you signed up with sprint) you likely signed a service agreement for a plan and not specifically their Terms and conditions. Torrenting is not officially prohibited, and Sprint does not make clear how much data usage on an unlimited plan is prohibited. You should be able to get your deposit back with no ETF fees, and phones with clear ESN's.
Just another way for Sprint to **** people with their "TRULY UNLIMITED DATA"
And they, and people in here who work for Sprint wonder why people get pissed.

Glad you are OK with being kicked to the curb. So who's your next carrier? Sprint is most lenient. Who do you think will let you use more data than Sprint? Seriously - who? And you know you'll pay more, right?
I question if torrents really had anything to do with it. A while back someone got terminated for using 90 gigs in 3 months. If you used 20+ for months on end, that could easily be the reason. Also, there are a lot of legal torrent uses, so I would hope they wouldn't just terminate everyone that uses one. As an example, Joker uses torrents as an alternate way to download his custom ROMs.
Did they warn you before terminating? It seems like they should have just told you that you are being excessive.
yes they warned me and after that i think i torrented one or 2 things.
I wouldnt be surprised if uploading (seeding) had more to do with it than the downloading.
I wouldn't even be able to be terminated if I tried. My download speeds over EvDo around my house suck. We're talking like 15kb/s max. The only place I get reasonably good speeds is in my dorm room, which is on the 17th story probably a mile (roughly) away from a tower.
Thanks for answering my question, guess I'll just have to persist for a few more months. I don't need a ton of data and I very rarely make phone calls. I'll be switching to T-Mobile's $30 a month plan. When I'm really using data on my phone I'm just messing with RSS, Gmail and a few sub-groups on social sites. My data use was consistently under 1.4 gigs until I got tired of waiting for m feeds and other stuff to load.
My usage may come close to doubling on another network but it will be worth it to actually get data service when I want it. If I need to, I'll jump to T-Mobiles $50 plan. I'm not even greedy, I just want speed that doesn't drop below 400 Kbps very often where I work and in transit to and from it. Most of the Sprint users in my area that I knew said that service was awesome but the phones sucked. I had to find out the hard way that I was speaking to people that didn't know the difference between a software/hardware bottleneck and network bottleneck.
I don't even hate Sprint, but I wish that there was a better method to check average download speed (outside, uninhibited) in an area without jumping onto the service. This goes for any provider.

Actually, yes. It doesn't matter if most torrents are illegal content as the burden of proof lies with the service provider. Therefore the premise of "if he was torrenting that it must have been something illegal" is flawed.
The same flawed thinking also applies to rooting/unlocking. It's the popular mindset of carriers/mainstream news and general pubic that the any reason someone would root their phone is free tethering or some other illegal activity.
Now if the OP was torrenting illegal content then that's his mistake. But at no point did the OP state that he was doing so.

Your data-gobbling habits & "How much data do you use"

I am curious about what is "a lot" of data to one person compared to another. I have heard 2 GB described as "a lot" of data before, and I have also head 150 GB described as "a lot."
So what is "a lot" to you? How much data in a month do you go through? (Or, since you've owned the phone)
How much do you think is "too much" data to be using in a month?
What do you do that uses a lot of Data? (Downloads, Online Videos/Netflix/Youtube, Tethering?)
What do you do the most on your Sprint phone you feel you couldn't on other providers?
How much data in a month would you go through on a previous Sprint WiMAX phone? (If applicable)
How much data in a month would you go through on a previous non-Sprint smartphone? (If applicable)
How much data in a month would you go through when using a different phone?
Discussion welcome. I think this will be interesting to see from different users' perspectives. Also if anyone has had their account terminated for excessive data on Sprint or any other provider, please pipe in

My Data Average usage is with:
Pandora ( modded ) ~ 11gb/mo
Netflix ~ 4gb/mo
FB, and others 1.5gb/mo
So nearly 17gb is a lot for me
How much do you think is "too much" data to be using in a month?
-2+GB/month
What do you do that uses a lot of Data?
-Google Music,Navigation,Youtube(when im actually in a good svs area, which is never.F YOU SPRINT)
What do you do the most on your Sprint phone you feel you couldn't on other providers?
-Nothing,really close to going to Verizon
How much data in a month would you go through on a previous Sprint WiMAX phone?
-Same because i never turned 4G on because Wimax sucked(980MB/month)
How much data in a month would you go through on a previous non-Sprint smartphone?
-same because their network has been **** for well over 4 years now(980MB/month)
How much data in a month would you go through when using a different phone?
-Same because no matter what phone I had the network was still the same(read above)
I use about 980MB/month

Data usage
The last month I had my EVO 3D, I did about 13GB on 4G and 350MB on 3G. I had a lot of podcasts and I have a media server for streaming my recorded TV. I can only imagine that was a regular occurance. I never looked before. I was worried what no 4G would be like. Since I am on the EVO LTE without a network, I am wifi for most of my data now.
So what is "a lot" to you? How much data in a month do you go through? (Or, since you've owned the phone)
How much do you think is "too much" data to be using in a month? 125GB
What do you do that uses a lot of Data? (Downloads, Online Videos/Netflix/Youtube, Tethering?) Netflix, Pandora, tTorrent
What do you do the most on your Sprint phone you feel you couldn't on other providers? Use actual unlimited data
How much data in a month would you go through on a previous Sprint WiMAX phone? (If applicable) This is from this month on my 4G tablet, I have 17 days left in the billing cycle.

I've been using ~80GB a month for the past almost 3 years now. That much data usage is honestly nothing. It's not my fault that you people only use your phone once maybe twice a day and listen to maybe one song off of Pandora. I work 10 hour shifts 4 days a week and like to listen to music/have movies playing while I work. It's not my fault that it burns through a decent amount of data.

We pay for unlimited but we still have to operate within reason. Sprint may be pushing their unlimited data now, but they may not in the future, and users who abuse the unlimited data plan aren't going to help them make a decision.

That's like saying I should use as little internet as possible at home as well. No, I'm sorry but I'm giving Sprint $130 a month (Phone and tablet) I should be allowed to use as much 4G data as I want. Limit the 3G use because that is what 99% of people use, sure. But for the amount of money they rake in every month we should be able to use all the 4G we want. End of story.

Which of these two prepaid should I go?

I have the amaze of course and im going to be unlocking it...
Im torn between these two prepaid services. $45 per month with Straight Talk or $50 per month for ATT's unlimited
If I go straight talk its going to be an ATT sim (i want to be on the att network as its better than t-mo's)
My question is should I go straight talk or cough up 5 more dollars a month and just go with att?
Depends on your data usage...

I suggest reading at howardforums straight talk forum. I put my kids on straight talk, but not myself. There is significant evidence that you must keep your data usagebelow 100mb/day or risk losing your account and potentially phone number. I put an app on my kids' phones to cut data usage at the 100mb. If you don't care, it's a good deal for ATT coverage!
I'm not familiar with $50 per month for ATT's Unlimited. Please post a link.
The above said, isn't there a band with T-Mo HSPA phones on ATT?

Sorry, recent reports are that ST is now throttling data rather than killing accounts for those who go over their unstated limits. That said, users are still reporting the 100mb/day rule to keep from being throttled.
